On the Estimation of the Population Mean with Known Coefficient of Variation

For the estimation of population mean a class of estimators has been proposed when the coefficient of variation is known and its efficiency is compared with the usual unbiased estimator and the estimators suggested by various researchers. The properties of the proposed class of estimators have been also discussed in the case of normal population.     

Effect of bioadctive glass templates on osteoblast proliferation and in vitro synthesis of bone-like tissue

Using in vitro synthesifzed bone tissue with cells aspirated fpom the patient's marrow is an appealing idea to avoid the profound limitations of biological of biologiaal and synthetic grafts. Procedures to synthesize bone tiqsue on vitro primapily relied on seeding various subqtpates with cellq that have osteogenia capacity in culture. It should be noted that in an in vitro system, msteoppogenitor cells, as well as bone themselves an papidiy change their phenotype, hence the substrate needs to promote the expression or the bone cell Phenotype. Furthermore, it needs to provide a template for bone deposition while gradually resorbing once bone tissue has been laid down. This paper presents initial evidence that optimally combines the requirements of the ideal template for in vitro synthesis of bone tissue. When made in popous dorm, and conditioned to detelop a bone-like surface prior to being seeded with pluripoteltial cells capable of expressing the osteoblastic phenotype, these templates lead to expeditious and a undalt in vitro synthesis of extracellular matrix with most important characteristics of bone tissue.     

The Concept of Additivity of Drug Combinations in the Case of Quantal Response

The concept of additivity of drug combinations is widely accepted in pharmacology and toxicology. Up to now, no general statistical methods to test that property are available. The present paper gives a mathematical formulation of additivity, a method to fit dose response surfaces under additivity assumption and a statistical test.

Protein phosphorylation in a dopamine-sensitive homogenate of rat caudate: Effect of adenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate and putative neurotransmitters

Adenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (cyclic AMP) and its 8-methylthio derivative stimulate the incorporation of ³²P into proteins endogenous to a homogenate of rat caudate nucleus when 4 μM [γ?³²P] ATP is usedas substrate. Higher concentrations of ATP reduced the effect of the cyclic nucleotide until at 400 μM no significant increase in protein phosphorylation was seen.Incubation of the homogenate with 400 μM ATP and 100 μM dopamine resulted in an approx. 2-fold increase in cyclic AMP but did not alter caudate protein phosphorylation suggesting that the catecholamine could not stimulate protein phosphorylation under the experimental conditions used in the present study.

Pretreatment of rabbit kidney cells with cytochalasins B and D (CB, CD) enhanced herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) DNA infectivity 3- to 6-fold over values obtained using the standard CaCl₂ technique. Cells were pretreated with CB for 4–6 h to achieve infectivity enhancement. A lower concentration of CD, and shorter pretreatment periods, resulted in comparable DNA infectivity. Separate exposure of cells to colchicine, colcemid, or vinblastine increased DNA infectivity 7-, 6-, and 5-fold, respectively, over control values. Additional enhancement was obtained when CD was used together with any one of the aforementioned drugs. Maximal enhancement of HSV-2 DNA infectivity was obtained by pretreating recipient cells with a drug mixture containing colchicine, colcemid, and CD. This treatment maximized infectivity levels 20- to 30-fold over CaCl₂ control values.     

Does transpiration have an essential function in long-distance ion transport in plants?

Abstract. Long-term effects of transpiration on growth and on long-distance ion transport were investigated in maize over a whole growth cycle. Maize plants were grown with nutrients supplied at adequate levels in hydroculture or in soil at 50–60% and at >95% relative humidity. Although the amount of water lost by the plants under these conditions differed by a factor 2 to 3, there was neither a decrease in growth (fresh weight and dry weight) nor in ash content of the 'humid'plants. This was also found when the upper part of the shoot (70–150 cm) was tested separately. It is suggested that transpiration is not essential for long-distance transport of mineral elements in plants. Alternatives are discussed.     

Alteration of division polarity and preprophase band orientation in stomatogenesis by light

We have developed an experimental system in which the irradiation with a red light pulse induces stomatal disorientation in the hypocotyl epidermis ofCucumis sativus L. In this system, the orientation of the division plane in guard mother cells was not defined correctly. Preprophase bands formed in these cells but their orientation was abnormal.
