We have studied hydrotropism and its interaction with gravitropism in agravitropic roots of a pea mutant and normal roots of peas (Pisum sativum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.). The interaction between hydrotropism and gravitropism in normal roots of peas or maize were also examined by nullifying the gravitropic response on a clinostat and by changing the stimulus-angle for gravistimulation. Depending on the intensity of both hydrostimulation and gravistimulation, hydrotropism and gravitropism of seedling roots strongly interact with one another. When the gravitropic response was reduced, either genetically or physiologically, the hydrotropic response of roots became more unequivocal. Also, roots more sensitive to gravity appear to require a greater moisture gradient for the induction of hydrotropism. Positive hydrotropism of roots occurred due to a differential growth in the elongation zone; the elongation was much more inhibited on the moistened side than on the dry side of the roots. It was suggested that the site of sensory perception for hydrotropism resides in the root cap, as does the sensory site for gravitropism. Furthermore, an auxin inhibitor, 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA), and a calcium chelator, ethyleneglycol-bis-(-aminoethylether)-N,N,N,N- tetraacetic acid (EGTA), inhibited both hydrotropism and gravitropism in roots. These results suggest that the two tropisms share a common mechanism in the signal transduction step.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The maize lrt1 (lateral rootless1) mutant is impaired in its development of lateral roots during early post-embryonic development. The aim of this study was to characterize, in detail, the influences that the mutation exerts on lateral root initiation and the subsequent developments, as well as to describe the behaviour of the entire plant under variable environmental conditions.

Methods

Mutant lrt1 plants were cultivated under different conditions of hydroponics, and in between sheets of moist paper. Cleared whole mounts and anatomical sections were used in combination with both selected staining procedures and histochemical tests to follow root development. Root surface permeability tests and the biochemical quantification of lignin were performed to complement the structural data.

Key Results

The data presented suggest a redefinition of lrt1 function in lateral roots as a promoter of later development; however, neither the complete absence of lateral roots nor the frequency of their initiation is linked to lrt1 function. The developmental effects of lrt1 are under strong environmental influences. Mutant primordia are affected in structure, growth and emergence; and the majority of primordia terminate their growth during this last step, or shortly thereafter. The lateral roots are impaired in the maintenance of the root apical meristem. The primary root shows disturbances in the organization of both epidermal and subepidermal layers. The lrt1-related cell-wall modifications include: lignification in peripheral layers, the deposition of polyphenolic substances and a higher activity of peroxidase.

Conclusions

The present study provides novel insights into the function of the lrt1 gene in root system development. The lrt1 gene participates in the spatial distribution of initiation, but not in its frequency. Later, the development of lateral roots is strongly affected. The effect of the lrt1 mutation is not as obvious in the primary root, with no influences observed on the root apical meristem structure and maintenance; however, development of the epidermis and cortex are impaired.  相似文献

The influences of socionomic sex ratio (SSR; adult males/adult female) and troop size upon male-male, female-female, and male-female grooming relationships were examined and compared between two wild Japanese macaque troops (Kinkazan A and Yakushima M troops) in Japan. The Yakushima M troop was smaller and had a higher-SSR than the Kinkazan A troop. Between the troops, (1) the male-male grooming frequency and number of partners were greater in the Yakushima M troop than in the Kinkazan A troop; (2) the female-female grooming frequency and number of partners were not different; and (3) the male-female grooming frequency and number of partners were not different. Based on these features, the patterns of female-female and male-female grooming relationships appear to be independent of SSR and troop size variations. In contrast, male-male grooming relationships are influenced by both factors, especially SSR. Frequent grooming interactions among males may be useful for the continued coexistence of relatively many males especially in a higher-SSR troop.  相似文献

In mixed populations of western and Clark's grebes, advertisingcalls by males and females play a critical role in mate choiceand reproductive isolation. We conducted field playback experimentsthat tested whether courting western grebe males became lesschoosy in their responses to female Clark's grebe calls as themating season progressed and mating opportunities diminished.Late-courting western grebe males were much more likely to answerand approach advertising calls of Dark's grebe females thanwere males courting earlier in the season. This change in responsivenessoccurred as the operational sex ratio index of the populationapproached 3:1 male calls per female call. These and field censusdata support the hypothesis that late-season hybridization betweenthese two closely related species may be a result not of speciesmisidentification, but of active and adaptive mate choice byindividuals with limited alternatives.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Mercury (Hg) is an extremely toxic pollutant, especially in the form of methylmercury (MeHg), whereas selenium (Se) is an essential trace element in the human diet. This study aimed to ascertain whether addition of Se can produce rice with enriched Se and lowered Hg content when growing in Hg-contaminated paddy fields and, if so, to determine the possible mechanisms behind these effects.

Methods

Two cultivars of rice (Oryza sativa, japonica and indica) were grown in either hydroponic solutions or soil rhizobags with different Se and Hg treatments. Concentrations of total Hg, MeHg and Se were determined in the roots, shoots and brown rice, together with Hg uptake kinetics and Hg bioavailability in the soil. Root anatonmy was also studied.

Key Results

The high Se treatment (5 μg g–1) significantly increased brown rice yield by 48 % and total Se content by 2·8-fold, and decreased total Hg and MeHg by 47 and 55 %, respectively, compared with the control treatments. The high Se treatment also markedly reduced ‘water-soluble’ Hg and MeHg concentrations in the rhizosphere soil, decreased the uptake capacity of Hg by roots and enhanced the development of apoplastic barriers in the root endodermis.

Conclusions

Addition of Se to Hg-contaminated soil can help produce brown rice that is simultaneously enriched in Se and contains less total Hg and MeHg. The lowered accumulation of total Hg and MeHg appears to be the result of reduced bioavailability of Hg and production of MeHg in the rhizosphere, suppression of uptake of Hg into the root cells and an enhancement of the development of apoplastic barriers in the endodermis of the roots.  相似文献

The severity of a root rot disease of cereals, caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn AG8, was inversely correlated to the Zn status of plants in field studies in 1989 and 1990. In 1989, a preliminary survey was conducted in a farmer's field in South Australia where Zn deficiency and disease were both widespread. Zn concentration in Spear wheat plants at the 3-leaf to early tillering stage was negatively correlated with severity of the disease. For the elevent elements analysed, a correlation matrix showed that Zn had the highest, and only significant (R2=0.52**) association with disease. The effect of Zn applications and their residual value on disease severity was further studied in a long-term field experiment in 1989 and 1990 to which Zn had been applied in 1986. There was a decrease in the area of Rhizoctonia bare patch as Zn rate was increased, a result consistent with the field survey results; the recommended rate of 2.5 kg Zn ha–1 reduced the area affected by bare patch from 42% to 21% of the total crop area compared with no Zn application, overcame Zn deficiency and increased grain yield from 1.1 to 2.8 t ha–1. In 1990, fresh Zn application treatments were applied to trial plots designed for this purpose, in order to compare the response with the older Zn treatments applied in 1986. The areas of bare patch in the older Zn treatments were approximately 5% greater than those in the fresh Zn treatments. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that Zn deficient plants are more susceptible to root rot caused by R. solani. Testing this hypothesis is the subject of a companion paper.  相似文献

Nanobiotechnology is a fast growing field in which instruments are created by nano size particles of approximately 1 to 100 nm (1 to 100 nm) of the scale of nanometers. Nanoparticles today have potential implications for life sciences and human health applications. In this research, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were successfully synthesized using Saussurea costus root aqueous extract and AgNPs have been characterized by the use of UV–Vis, Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM), and Electromicroscopy of transmission (TEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDXs). The highest number of particles are in the 5 to 15 nm range. AgNPs have been added in saffron dye solution for degradation dye biosynthesizing, and product analysis using UV/vision spectrophotometer, FTIR and HPLC has been performed. Green-summed AgNPs effectively degraded the color, with UV/VIS spectrophotometers, around 84.6 percent at 72 h of exposure time. The decrease in tested dye and presence of multiple new highs in the samples treated with different retention times (Rt) 2.30, 6.10 and 12.24 min, is positive for the biodegradation compared to the untreated dye with single high at 10.31 min, respectively. This green chemistry is very advantageous for AgNPs biosynthesis, for example, cost-effectiveness and usability for medicinal, pharmaceutical and extensive industrial applications. Furthermore, the bio-recovery unit for plant extracts provides a greater ease of handling, compared to micro-organisms.  相似文献

To determine how plantations of Caragana microphylla shrubs affect saline-alkali soil amelioration and revegetation, we investigated the vegetation and sampled soils from saline-alkali wasteland (SAW), perennial Caragana forestland (PCF), Caragana forest after fire disturbance (CFF). Results showed that with the development of Caragana Fabr., highly dominant species of Poaceae family, including Elymus dahuricus, Thermopsis lanceolata, Stipa tianschanica, died out in PCF. Moreover, Papilionaceae family, including Lespedeza indica, Oxytropis psammocharis, and Astragalus scaberrimus, was established both in PCF and CFF. Phytoremediation of saline-alkali wasteland (SAW) was achieved by plantation, resulting in the reduced soil pH, sodium adsorption ratio, exchangeable sodium percentage, salinity, and Na+ concentration around Caragana shrubs. Greater amounts of soil organic, total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium were observed in PCF topsoil than in SAW topsoil. The concentration of mineralized N in PCF soil was significantly lower than that in SAW soil at all sampled depths, indicating that Caragana shrubs were just using N and therefore less measured in soils. Fire disturbance resulted in decreased soil pH and salinity, but increased organic content, total nitrogen, and ammonium nitrogen. The improved soil parameters and self-recovery of shrubs indicated that Caragana shrubs were well established after burning event.  相似文献
