Aerenchyma and an Inducible Barrier to Radial Oxygen Loss Facilitate Root Aeration in Upland, Paddy and Deep-water Rice (Oryza sativa L.) 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
The present study evaluated waterlogging tolerance, root porosityand radial O2 loss (ROL) from the adventitious roots, of sevenupland, three paddy, and two deep-water genotypes of rice (Oryzasativa L.). Upland types, with the exception of one genotype,were as tolerant of 30 d soil waterlogging as the paddyand deep-water types. In all but one of the 12 genotypes, thenumber of adventitious roots per stem increased for plants grownin waterlogged, compared with drained, soil. When grown in stagnantdeoxygenated nutrient solution, genotypic variation was evidentfor root porosity and rates of ROL, but there was no overalldifference between plants from the three cultural types. Adventitiousroot porosity increased from 2026 % for plants grownin aerated solution to 2941 % for plants grown instagnant solution. Growth in stagnant solution also induceda tight barrier to ROL in the basal regions ofadventitious roots of five of the seven upland types, all threepaddy types, and the two deep-water types. The enhanced porosityprovided a low resistance pathway for O2 movement to the roottip, and the barrier to ROL in basal zones would have furtherenhanced longitudinal O2 diffusion towards the apex, by diminishinglosses to the rhizosphere. The plasticity in root physiology,as described above, presumably contributes to the ability ofrice to grow in diverse environments that differ markedly insoil waterlogging, such as drained upland soils as well as waterloggedpaddy fields. 相似文献

Neuronal growth cones are capable of sophisticated discrimination of environmental cues, on cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix, to accomplish navigation during development (generation) and following nervous system injury (regeneration). Choices made by growth cones are commonly examined using tissue culture paradigms in which molecules of interest are purified and substratum‐bound. From observations of growth cone behaviors using these paradigms, assertions are made about choices neuronal growth cones may make in vivo. However, in many cases, the binding, interactions, and conformations of these molecules have not been determined. In the present study, we investigated the binding characteristics of two commonly studied outgrowth regulatory molecules: chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs), which are typically inhibitory to neurite outgrowth during development and following nervous system injury, and laminin, which is typically outgrowth promoting for many neuronal types. Using a novel combination of radiolabeling and quantitative fluorescence, we determined the precise concentrations of CSPGs and laminin‐1 that were bound separately and together in a variety of choice assays. For identically prepared cultures, we correlated neurite outgrowth behaviors with binding characteristics. The data support our working hypothesis that neuronal growth cones are guided by the ratio of outgrowth‐promoting to outgrowth‐inhibiting influences in their environment, i.e., they summate local molecular cues. The response of growth cones to these molecular combinations is most likely mediated by integrins and subsequent activation of signal transduction cascades in growth cones. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A nematode collected from Diaprepes abbreviatus is identified and described as a new species, Steinernema diaprepesi n. sp. The new species is closely related to S. feltiae, S. glaseri, and S. oregonense and can be distinguished from these species by the following characteristics: Males: Spicule averaging 79 (71-90) µm and spicule shape; D% (distance from anterior end to excretory pore/ esophagus length × 100) about 80; the ratio SW (spicule length/anal body width) about 1.8. Females: Vulva with short, double- flapped epiptygma; tail terminus usually with 5 papillae-like structures. Infective juveniles: Body averaging 1,002 (880-1,133) µm, EP (distance from anterior end to excretory pore) = 74 (66-83) µm; tail length = 83 (65-91) µm, and E% (EP/tail length × 100) = 89.6 (78-114). Lateral field pattern variable, the formula for the arrangement of ridges from head to tail is: 2, 6, 7, 8, 4, 2. The portion with eight ridges is the longest. This new species can be differentiated further from three closest species (S. feltiae, S. glaseri, and S. oregonense) by characteristic sequences of their ITS regions, including sequence lengths, ratios of similarity, composition, and differences in base characters in sequence alignment. 相似文献

The scope of morphological plasticity of vegetative structures among Podostemoideae (Podostemaceae) is documented for Crenias weddelliana, a neotropical species, Maferria indica, a palaeotropical species, and Sphaerothylax abyssinica, from Kenya, and compared with related taxa. The study highlights intrinsic characters of the widely enigmatic plant body of many species of the subfamily Podostemoideae. These include dorsiventrality of shoots occurring irrespective of gravity, incurvate distichy and one‐sided spirodistichy correlated with shoot dorsiventrality, asymmetric leaves, and several types of positioning of the two prophylls and inflorescence structures. The homogeneity of hairs of the ‘Zeylanidium olivaceum type’ established on the subulate leaves of some Indian species is of taxonomic value. The latter also applies to the stipella (not stipule) on the asymmetric compound leaf in New World species. The capability of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L., cv. Serpente cinese), a Strategy I plant and barley (Hordeum vulgaris L., cv. Europa), a Strategy II plant to use Fe complexed by a water-soluble humic fraction (WEHS) extracted from a peat, was studied. Uptake of 59Fe from 59Fe-WEHS by cucumber plants was higher at pH 6.0 than at pH 7.5. Roots of intact cucumber plants were able to reduce the FeIII-WEHS complex either at pH 6.0 or 7.5, rates being higher in the assay medium buffered at pH 6.0. After supply of 59Fe-WEHS, a large pool of root extraplasmatic 59Fe was formed, which could be used to a large extent by Fe-deficient plants, particularly under acidic conditions. Uptake of 59Fe from 59Fe-WEHS by Fe-sufficient and Fe-deficient barley plants was examined during periods of high (morning) and low (evening) PS release. Uptake paralleled the diurnal rhythm of PS release. Furthermore, 59Fe uptake was strongly enhanced by addition of PS to the uptake solution in both Fe-sufficient and Fe-deficient plants. High amount of root extraplasmatic 59Fe was formed upon supply of Fe-WEHS, particularly in the evening experiment. Fe-deficient barley plants were able to utilize Fe from the root extraplasmatic pool, conceivably as a result of high rates of PS release. The results of the present work together with previous observations indicate that cucumber plants (Strategy I) utilize Fe complexed to WEHS, presumably via reduction of FeIII-WEHS by the plasma membrane-bound reductase, while barley plants (Strategy II) use an indirect mechanism involving ligand exchange between WEHS and PS. 相似文献
