Cytologic preparations made from the tracheobronchial tree taken by the Schreiber catheter have been scanned by three color
microphotometry. The digitized cell images were processed by the analytical cytodiagnostic programs of the TICAS system. Cells
were sorted into two control groups and five groups of increasing atypia ranging from normal epithelium to invasive squamous
cell carcinoma. Standard statistical tests, including Wilk's Lambda, Rao's V, and the Kruskal-Wallis tests are performed on
these subsets of cell image features. This study demonstrates that discriminant analyses permit differentiation between normal
cells and those from marked atypia or carcinoma and that the classification achieves a high degree of agreement with visual

Alkaline phosphatase is one of several enzymes that accumulate in a temporally regulated sequence during the development of Dictyostelium discoideum. These enzymes can be used to monitor specific gene expression; moreover, isolation and analysis of mutations in the structural gene(s) can serve to indicate some of the essential steps in programmed synthesis and morphogenesis. A mutation (alpA) which affects the activity and substrate affinity of alkaline phosphatase was isolated in D discoideum using a procedure for screening large numbers of clones. Alkaline phosphatase activity at all stages of vegetative growth and development was altered by the mutation. Several physical properties of the enzyme from growing cells and developed cells were compared and found to be indistinguishable. It is likely that a single enzyme is responsible for the majority of alkaline phosphatase activity in growth and development. The mutation is coexpressed in diploids heterozygous for alpA and maps to linkage group III. One of the haploid segregants isolated from these diploids carries convenient markers on each of the six defined linkage groups and can be used for linkage analysis of other genetic loci. 相似文献

The hydration characteristics of phosphatidylcholines and the effect of cholesterol on these were studied with differential thermal analysis and water vapour adsorption experiments. Also the water adsorption of egg phosphatidylethanolamine and the effect of cholesterol on this was studied and compared with corresponding qualities of phosphatidylcholine.The differential thermal analysis study showed that the monohydrates of egg, dipalmitoyl, and dioleoyl phosphatidylcholine tightly bind ~9 molecules of water per phosphatidylcholine molecule. Cholesterol is proved to somewhat increase the water binding of the phospholipids. Cholesterol is also shown to decrease the heat change of the chain melting transition of dioleoyl phosphatidylcholine, but not to abolish it completely.The water adsorption experiments indicate that the hydration of phosphatidylcholines takes place in two steps; a strong initial water binding and a second phase of weak binding. The adsorption isotherm of egg phosphatidylethanolamine is strikingly different from that of egg phosphatidylcholine. Cholesterol is shown, also by this method, to increase the hydration of phospholipids especially that of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine.The results in this study are in good agreement with those presented by many other authors. Starting with the accumulated information of the hydration characteristics of phosphatidylcholines the organization of the bound water around the polar group is discussed and the most probable model is evaluated. 相似文献

Actual and fossil shells of ostracodes have beenanalyzed with an electronic microprobe: all of them contain phosphorus. X—pictures teach us that the repartition of this chemical element is homogeneous in all the points of the shell. There is no relationship between phosphorus contents in the shells of ostracodes and salinity. In return, there is a relationship between phosphorus contents and temperature and, chiefly, organic phosphorus contents in the environment. However, it is interesting to observe that the analyzed shells of fresh-water ostracodes contain less phosphorus that the generality of the shells of marine ostracodes. The contents of organic phosphorus, in the biotope, depends on the growth of phytoplancton in the upper layers of water which needs a minimum light intensity. 相似文献

Following a survey of the problems associated with the comparative study of measures of physique in domesticated and laboratory animals, techniques were developed for the measurement of body build in the adult albino laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus). They involved anesthetisation of the animals and the use of calipers and a simple apparatus devised for the purpose. The 17 measures taken on 100 rats, 50 of each sex, are detailed and the reasons for excluding others given. Intercorrelations of all the measures and their reliability co-efficients, which were judged satisfactory, are presented. The tables of intercorrelations, one for each sex, were factor analysed separately, and rotations to simple structure performed. Two factors were identified, one having factor saturations on measures of body length and the other similarly defining body width. This pattern was similar for the two sexes and a single index of body build was therefore proposed in which the length of the rear foot is divided by the width of the shoulder girdle and multiplied by 100 to avoid decimals. To analyze differences between apes and monkeys and the affinities of man, we have studied the shoulder girdle of 327 specimens of anthropoid primates. The scapula, clavicle and humerus are viewed as an integrated functional complex on the basis of 18 measurements. Several varieties of multivariate analysis show that man is clearly closer to other hominoids than to the included monkey taxa (whether terrestrial or arboreal, Old World or New World). The marked shoulder differences between apes and monkeys and similarities between apes and man correlate with the muscular anatomy, which in hominoids allows the motions involved in their locomotion and feeding behavior. As the hominid-pongid correspondence in shoulder morphology is especially detailed regarding the functionally important joint surfaces, it is consistent with a fairly recent period of common ancestry and behavior. No hypothetical evolutionary pathway or ancestral form of the human shoulder need look far beyond the model afforded by extant pongids. In contrast with previous studies on the primate shoulder, these results agree with information accumulating from other systems—comparative anatomy, primate behavior, and molecular biology — in suggesting very close relationship between man and extant African pongids. 相似文献

Summary The vegetation of cultivated, fallow and ‘old’ fields of Scotland County, N.C. was both randomly and subjectively sampled
throughout the growing season of 1973. Relevés were placed in each of the above management units, and the data collected in
this relevé analysis were sorted into phytosociological charts, with the aid of the digital computer.
Weed associations delimited in the charts reflected the importance of edaphic factors, time (aspect), and man's agricultural
activities as causal factors in the determination of characteristic assemblages of weeds. Several character and differential
species were denoted, in a tentative classification of the weed associations. The cultivated and fallow stands in the spring
aspect were noted to be dominated by a group of spring annuals. Summer annuals were more prevalent in homologous situations
in the summer. It was determined that perennials, appearing mainly as seedlings in cultivated and fallow fields, attained
dominance in ‘old’ fields, one to five years in age. Within each of the major spheres of management, and in each season, associations
of weeds mainly reflected differences in edaphic factors. Many character species were noted to maintain affinities to an assortment
of soil types that ranged from moist loams to xeric, sterile sands.
A study of roadsides, hedgerows, field margins and other ecotonal areas inhabited by weeds was carried throughout the growing
season of 1973, also. Species presence was documented in each of these habitat types and reported in Sharp (1974).
The weed flora of Scotland County was found to be rich in species. A total of 506 species representing 248 genera and 80 families
were encountered throughout the study. Of the total number of species listed, approximately 25 percent were of foreign origin,
and 28 percent represented additions to the flora of Scotland County.
