Concentrations of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) were determined in 383 human hair samples and in 445 food samples purchased in 11 Chinese cities. The concentrations of Cu were 7.91, 5.39, 2.27 and 2.20 mg kg?1 and those of Zn were 47.2, 24.8, 52.8 and 30.2 mg kg?1 in vegetables, cereals, meat and fish, respectively. The overall mean concentrations of hair Cu and Zn were 8.97 and 128 mg kg?1, respectively. Hair Cu and Zn concentrations were higher in females than in males, especially in the 13–19 and 20–50 year age groups. Hair Cu concentration increased with increasing age and these changes occurred mainly in males. In contrast, 51–65 years old females had the lowest hair Zn concentrations. Residents of rural areas had similar hair Cu or Zn concentrations to people in urban areas. There were no significant correlations between hair concentration and food intake in terms of Cu and Zn among the cities. The results indicate that hair Cu and Zn concentrations and their changes with biological and environmental factors cannot be explained satisfactorily by the estimated food intakes in the cities sampled.  相似文献

Battery storage systems (BSSs) are popular as a means to increase the self-consumption rates of residential photovoltaics. However, their environmental impact is under discussion, given the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the production and the efficiency losses during operation. Against this background, we carry out a holistic environmental assessment of residential BSSs by combining a partial life cycle assessment for the production phase with a detailed simulation of 162 individual German households for the operational phase. As regards the production phase, we only find small differences between the carbon footprints of different cell chemistries. Moreover, we can show that the balance of plant components have a comparable impact on the global warming potential as the cell modules. In terms of the operational phase, our simulations show that BSSs can compensate at least parts of their efficiency losses by shifting electricity demand from high-emission to low-emission periods. Under certain conditions, the operational phase of the BSSs can even overcompensate the emissions from the production phase and lead to a positive environmental impact over the lifetime of the systems. As the most relevant drivers, we find the exact emissions at the production stage, the individual household load patterns, the system efficiency, and the applied operational strategy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Although some research suggests that dog-assisted therapy may be beneficial for people with dementia living in residential aged care facilities, the intervention has not been adequately investigated. To address this shortcoming, we conducted a randomized controlled trial of dog-assisted therapy versus a human-therapist-only intervention for this population. Fifty-five residents with mild to moderate dementia living in three Australian residential aged care facilities completed an 11-week trial of the interventions. Allocation to the intervention was random and participants completed validated measures of mood, psychosocial functioning, and quality of life (QOL), both prior to and following the intervention. No adverse events were associated with the dog-assisted intervention, and following it participants who had worse baseline depression scores demonstrated significantly improved depression scores relative to participants in the human-therapist-only intervention. Participants in the dog-assisted intervention also showed significant improvements on a measure of QOL in one facility compared with those in the human-therapist-only group (although worse in another facility that had been affected by an outbreak of gastroenteritis). This study provides some evidence that dog-assisted therapy may be beneficial for some residents of aged care facilities with dementia.  相似文献

Few social-psychological theories of intraurban residential mobility have been offered, despite a number of empirical studies of personal motives. A complete explanation of residential mobility would interrelate macroscopic economic factors with household preferences. A cross-cultural socio-psychological model is presented as a step toward a comprehensive theory. Data from an exploratory study of middle-class Mexico City residents are used to test the model. Results suggest that middle-class Mexicans decide to move because of space needs accompanying life-cycle changes, desire for home ownership, and environmental reasons. Home selection was primarily a function of availability, cost, and terms. Unlike North Americans, suburban Mexicans were uninterested in community activities and maintained close contact with relatives; central-city respondents enjoyed living in the city despite dissatisfaction with residence or neighborhood. Most would avoid the suburbs because of communication problems and distance from relatives. In biomasses from 22 moulds isolated in housing buildings a Chromatographie HPLC UV/VIS analysis was carried out to assess the production of sterigmatocystin by fungal isolates. The results are discussed with respect to mycotoxic risk for people exposed to the presence ofAspergillus versicolor. This fungus is often present on building materials, but does not always produce the carcinogenic mycotoxin sterigmatocystin (ST). In this study, 19 (86%) of the 22 strains synthesized ST at detectable levels (>0.03 mg kg−1 biomass). Three of the strains (14%) were found to synthesize ST at levels exceeding 100 mg kg−1 of the air-dry mould biomass with laboratory medium. One strain proved to be highly productive and synthesized more than 500 mg kg−1 ST. Thus, it presented the highest mycotoxic danger for the dwellers of the buildings whereA. versicolor infested the walls. However, most strains are low producers of ST, with 12 of 22 isolates synthesizing less than 10 mg kg−1 biomass. Mycotoxigenic and highly productive strains that produced significant amounts of ST (>500 mg kg−1 biomass) were less frequently found, with approximately 5% of all isolates from buildings studied for ST production. Although on-campus residence allows easier access to campus facilities, existing studies showed mixed results regarding the relationship between college residence and students’ well-being indicators, such as sleep behaviors and mood. There was also a lack of studies investigating the role of chronotype in the relationship between on-campus residence and well-being. In particular, the temporal relationships among these factors were unclear. Hence, this longitudinal study aims to fill in these gaps by first reporting the well-being (measured in terms of mood, sleep, and quality of life) among students living on and off campus across two academic semesters. We explored factors predicting students’ dropout in university residences. Although students living on campus differ in their chronotypes, activities in campus residence (if any) are mostly scheduled in the nighttime. We therefore tested if individual differences in chronotype interact with campus residence in affecting well-being. Our final sample consisted of 215 campus residents and 924 off-campus-living students from 10 different universities or colleges in Hong Kong or Macau. Their mean age was 20.2 years (SD?=?2.3); 6.5% of the participants are female. Participants completed self-reported questionnaires online on their sleep duration, sleep quality, chronotype, mood, and physical and psychological quality of life. Across two academic semesters, we assessed if students living on and off campus differed in our well-being measures after we partialed out the effects of demographic information (including age, sex, family income, and parents’ education) and the well-being measures at baseline (T1). The results showed that, campus residents exhibited longer sleep duration, greater sleep efficiency, better sleep quality, and less feeling of stress than off-campus-living students. From one semester to the next, around 10% of campus residents did not continue to live on campus. Logistic regression showed that a morning type was the strongest factor predicting dropout from campus residence. Chronotype significantly moderated the effects of campus residence on participants’ physical and psychological quality of life. Although morning-type off-campus-living students have better well-being than their evening-type peers living off campus, morning-type campus residents had worse well-being than other campus residents and they were more likely to discontinue living on campus after one semester. Our findings bear practical significance to college management that morning-type campus residents are shown to be experiencing deteriorating well-being. The authorities may need to review and revise the room-allocation policy in campus residence in improving the well-being among campus residents.  相似文献

Airborne endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) in filter samples collected in three different swine confinement buildings was determined by using the Limulus amebocyte lysate test and by applying gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to analyze 3-hydroxy fatty acids (3-OH-FAs). The amounts of LPS as shown by GC-MS were 30–50 times larger than the amounts detected by the Limulus test. GC-MS revealed that 21% of the LPS collected on cellulose acetate filters and 26% on polycarbonate filters remained on the filters after buffer extraction. Better correlation with the Limulus test and the 3-OH-FA measurements was achieved when considering the sum of 3-OH C12:0 and 3-OH C14:0 rather than the sum of all of the detected 3-OH-FAs (i.e. those with 12–18-carbon chains), indicating that the bioactivity of the LPS was dependent upon the relative distribution of the 3-OH-FAs. Linear regression analysis between air concentrations of dust and endotoxin/LPS gaveR 2values that varied from 0.407 to 0.739. The air concentrations of LPS were lower in the uninsulated swine house (a green house with an alternative housing system) than in the two insulated buildings (conventional housing systems; one designed as a climate chamber, i.e. climatic parameters could be controlled), whereas the opposite was found for the concentrations of LPS in airborne dust from the three buildings. The numbers of viable bacteria and fungi were highest in the uninsulated swine house. Moreover the relative distribution of 3-OH-FAs in that building differed from the distribution in the insulated buildings, which reflects differences in the microflora, probably mainly due to differences between the housing systems and the design of the buildings.  相似文献

The phylogenetic history, paleontological implications, and ecology of larger New Zealand Recent species of Neilo (sensu stricto) are discussed. N. wairoana delli, N. blacki, and N. (Pseudomalletia) aoteana are described as new.
