High populations of both Scutellonema brachyurum and Macroposthonia xenoplax were detected in the root zones of peach trees growing at sites where peach tree short life occurred. Both nematodes responded to changes in tree health, with the highest numbers detected under the most vigorous trees; both populations declined as tree vigor declined. Few of either species were detected 6 months after trees died. The nematode populations were inversely correlated with each other. More M. xenoplax were recovered during cool, wet weather, but moisture seems more important than temperature in influencing population levels. Most S. brachyurum were recovered during hot, dry weather.  相似文献

The long-term safety of final disposal of spent nuclear fuel in the deep geosphere is dependent on stability of biogeochemical conditions at the disposal site. Microbial processes, such as sulphate reduction and methanogenesis, may have profound effects on site biogeochemistry. In this study, sulphate-reducing bacteria and methane-producing archaea were investigated at depths ranging from 68 to 545 m in crystalline rock fractures at an intended spent nuclear fuel disposal site in Olkiluoto, Finland. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis detected diverse sulphate-reducing bacterial communities in all samples. Although the number of dsrB gene copies was below 103 copies ml?1 in all analyzed samples according to real-time quantitative PCR, their abundance was highest in samples that had the highest sulphate concentrations. Several distinct mcrA gene fragments were also recovered from most of the analyzed samples by cloning, although the number of methanogens was lower than that of sulphate-reducing bacteria when measured by mcrA-targeted quantitative PCR. The detected gene fragments were most closely related to sequences obtained from aquatic and deep subsurface environments. Results imply that sulphate reduction, methanogenesis, and anaerobic methane oxidation may all take place in the Olkiluoto deep geobiosphere.  相似文献

Climate change is altering disturbance regimes outside historical norms, which can impact biodiversity by selecting for plants with particular traits. The relative impact of disturbance characteristics on plant traits and community structure may be mediated by environmental gradients. We aimed to understand how wildfire impacted understory plant communities and plant regeneration strategies along gradients of environmental conditions and wildfire characteristics in boreal forests. We established 207 plots (60 m2) in recently burned stands and 133 plots in mature stands with no recent fire history in comparable gradients of stand type, site moisture (drainage) and soil organic layer (SOL) depth in two ecozones in Canada's Northwest Territories. At each plot, we recorded all vascular plant taxa in the understory and measured the regeneration strategy (seeder, resprouter, survivor) in burned plots, along with seedbed conditions (mineral soil and bryophyte cover). Dispersal, longevity and growth form traits were determined for each taxon. Fire characteristics measured included proportion of pre-fire SOL combusted (fire severity), date of burn (fire seasonality) and pre-fire stand age (time following fire). Results showed understory community composition was altered by fire. However, burned and mature stands had similar plant communities in wet sites with deep SOL. In the burned plots, regeneration strategies were determined by fire severity, drainage and pre- and post-fire SOL depth. Resprouters were more common in wet sites with deeper SOL and lower fire severity, while seeders were associated with drier sites with thinner SOL and greater fire severity. This led to drier burned stands being compositionally different from their mature counterparts and seedbed conditions were important. Our study highlights the importance of environment–wildfire interactions in shaping plant regeneration strategies and patterns of understory plant community structure across landscapes, and the overriding importance of SOL depth and site drainage in mediating fire severity, plant regeneration and community structure.  相似文献

A new tandem applicator with tungsten shield for Ir-192 radiation source used in intra-cavitary brachytherapy (ICBT) enabled intensity modulated brachytherapy (IMBT) in cervical cancer treatment through fluence-modulation by rotating shield. Our previous work employed group-wise and element-wise sparsity constraints for plan optimization of tandem applicator to minimizes the number of activated angles and source dwell points for delivery efficiency. It, however, did not incorporate the ovoid applicators into the optimizing process, which is generally used to prevent cancer recurrence. To integrate ovoid applicators to the new tandem applicator, this work proposed a comprehensive framework that modifies 1) dose deposition matrix for inverse planning, and 2) plan optimizing algorithm. The dose deposition matrix was newly formulated by the Monte-Carlo simulated dose distribution for 10 positions of ovoid applicators, followed by combining those with tandem-associated dose deposition matrix. The plan optimizing algorithm decomposed entire elements into tandem and ovoid applicators, which were governed by different constraints adaptive to specified plan objectives. The integrated framework was compared against conventional ICBT, and IMBT with tandem only for three patients with asymmetric dose distributions. Integrated IMBT framework resulted in the most optimal plans. Including fluence-modulation by rotating-shield outperformed conventional ICBT in dose sparing to critical organs. Adopting ovoid applicators to the optimization yielded more conformal dose distribution around inferior, laterally expanded region of target volume. The resulting plans reduced D5cc and D2cc by 30.9% and 27.8% for critical organs over conventional ICBT, and by 20.6% and 21.5% for target volume over IMBT with tandem only.  相似文献

Whilst high‐resolution spatial variables contribute to a good fit of spatially explicit deforestation models, socio‐economic processes are often beyond the scope of these models. Such a low level of interest in the socio‐economic dimension of deforestation limits the relevancy of these models for decision‐making and may be the cause of their failure to accurately predict observed deforestation trends in the medium term. This study aims to propose a flexible methodology for taking into account multiple drivers of deforestation in tropical forested areas, where the intensity of deforestation is explicitly predicted based on socio‐economic variables. By coupling a model of deforestation location based on spatial environmental variables with several sub‐models of deforestation intensity based on socio‐economic variables, we were able to create a map of predicted deforestation over the period 2001–2014 in French Guiana. This map was compared to a reference map for accuracy assessment, not only at the pixel scale but also over cells ranging from 1 to approximately 600 sq. km. Highly significant relationships were explicitly established between deforestation intensity and several socio‐economic variables: population growth, the amount of agricultural subsidies, gold and wood production. Such a precise characterization of socio‐economic processes allows to avoid overestimation biases in high deforestation areas, suggesting a better integration of socio‐economic processes in the models. Whilst considering deforestation as a purely geographical process contributes to the creation of conservative models unable to effectively assess changes in the socio‐economic and political contexts influencing deforestation trends, this explicit characterization of the socio‐economic dimension of deforestation is critical for the creation of deforestation scenarios in REDD+ projects.  相似文献

Selecting the right habitat in a risky landscape is crucial for an individual''s survival and reproduction. In predator–prey systems, prey often can anticipate the habitat use of their main predator and may use protective associates (i.e. typically an apex predator) as shields against predation. Although never tested, such mechanisms should also evolve in systems in which sexual conflict affects offspring survival. Here, we assessed the relationship between offspring survival and habitat selection, as well as the use of protective associates, in a system in which sexually selected infanticide (SSI), rather than interspecific predation, affects offspring survival. We used the Scandinavian brown bear (Ursus arctos) population with SSI in a human-dominated landscape as our model system. Bears, especially adult males, generally avoid humans in our study system. We used resource selection functions to contrast habitat selection of GPS-collared mothers that were successful (i.e. surviving litters, n = 19) and unsuccessful (i.e. complete litter loss, n = 11) in keeping their young during the mating season (2005–2012). Habitat selection was indeed a predictor of litter survival. Successful mothers were more likely to use humans as protective associates, whereas unsuccessful mothers avoided humans. Our results suggest that principles of predator–prey and fear ecology theory (e.g. non-consumptive and cascading effects) can also be applied to the context of sexual conflict.  相似文献

We have developed a new method for the preparation of giant liposomes in aqueous solution containing high salt concentrations (up to 2.0 M). Hydrophilic polymers attached to the surface of lipid membranes by including a small amount of poly(ethylene glycol)-grafted phospholipid in the membrane increase the repulsive force between the membranes, which makes it possible to form giant liposomes at high ionic strength. Using this method, we could grow micron-sized (10-50 μm) protein crystals in a giant liposome. These results demonstrate that this method is a promising tool for the preparation of ‘artificial cells’ under various conditions.  相似文献

This work tested the hypothesis that ectomycorrhizas (EM) of Dicymbe corymbosa alter leaf-litter decomposition and residual litter quality in tropical forests of Guyana. Mass loss of leaf litter in litter bags was determined on three occasions, in two experiments, during a 12-month period. Paired root-exclusion plots were located randomly within a D. corymbosa forest. Both D. corymbosa and mixed-species leaf litters were reciprocally transplanted into their respective forest types. Elemental analysis was performed on the residual D. corymbosa leaf litter after 1 yr. Leaf litter mass loss in the D. corymbosa forest was not influenced by EM, despite high EM colonization. Elemental analysis of D. corymbosa leaf litter residues demonstrated reduced calcium levels in the presence of EM, which were negatively correlated with EM rootlet-colonizing mass. The lack of EM effect on the litter decomposition rate, coupled with high EM colonization, suggests an important but indirect role in mineral nutrient acquisition. Lowered Ca concentration in leaf litter exposed to EM may suggest a high Ca demand by the ectotroph system.  相似文献
