Six heifers were used in a series of experiments to study the effects of experimental Trypanosomavivax infection on bovine reproduction. Four three-year-old Zebu heifers were intravenously inoculated with T. vivax-strain Y58 — on days 14 and 16 of their estrous cycle and two control heifers in the same phase of estrus were not infected. All the heifers were bred in the research pens with a proven bull. The four infected heifers were bred at the first wave of parasitemia and the onset of pyrexia which characterised the infection. All the heifers were examined rectally 40 days after breeding. The four infected heifers were not pregnant but the two controls were. The infected heifers later became anestrous during the experimental period of more than five months. It is concluded that trypanosomiasis may contribute to high infertility rates in cattle kept in endemic areas.  相似文献

Two species ofPenaeaceae (Penaea mucronata andSaltera sarcocolla), a unique South African family ofMyrtales, were investigated embryologically.Penaeaceae clearly agrees with otherMyrtales in its basic embryological characteristics, and further is characterized by its highly specialized features: ephemeral endothecium, 16-nucleatePenaea-type embryo sac, and unique ovular form. A wider range of affinities of families includingPenaeaceae, Oliniaceae, Rhynchocalycaceae, Alzateaceae, andCrypteroniaceae sensu stricto, as well as a possible common divergence from an ancestral line leading toLythraceae and/orMelastomataceae, are discussed on embryological and other grounds.  相似文献

Hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA) amides in fertile and cytoplasmic male sterile lines of maize were determined in reproductive organs, developing grains and cobs. HCA amides occurred in large amounts in the anthers of fertile plants (line F7N) and were absent from the anthers of cytoplasmic male sterile lines (lines F7T and F7C). Restoration of fertility was associated with the production of these compounds (line FC31). Considerable variations were observed in the concentrations of HCA amides at different stages of growth and grain maturation. Changes of HCA amides in the grains which were to produce sterile plants followed a pattern similar to that obtained with the grains which were to produce fertile plants. Accumulation of HCA amides was substantially higher in fertile lines whatever their genotype (F7N, FC31 and F7T x FC31) than in sterile lines. Marked changes occurred in the HCA amide content of embryo and endosperm during grain development. Many changes in HCA amides were observed in cobs during development and maturation, but no substantial differences could be observed between fertile and sterile lines.  相似文献

Initial changes in the fine morphology of apparently normal mouse zygotes and embryos were studied in serial sections of mouse oviducts that had been fixed in situ. These changes included extra sperm in the perivitelline space, nuclear budding, the presence of large nucleoli, perinuclear vesicles, the concentration of cytoplasmic organelles, and the extrusion of cytoplasmic ground substance. Initial changes in the nucleus and cytoplasm were undetectable when the zygotes and embryos were examined with the light microscope. It was concluded that serious abnormalities in zygotes and embryos, which may not be identified at the light microscope level, may be detected if they are examined in the electron microscope. Therefore, zygotes and embryos should be critically evaluated before being rated as normal.  相似文献

Asexual and sexual reproductive cyries are described and illustrated for a cultured homothallic strain of Mougeotia transeaui Collins. Reproduction is by aplanospores and zygospores. Aplanospore formation precedes zygospore formation and continues longer with regreening of older cultures occurring regularly from precocious germination of aplanospores. Aplanospores typically form when most of the protoplast moves into the central swollen region of a cell and two new cross walls form to delimit an aplanosporangium. Conjugation is scalariform without the movement and fusion of well-organized gametes. During zygospore maturation, three new cross walls form in the receptive gametangium and conjugation tube to produce a zygosporangium.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Geographic variation and genetic aspect of reproductive diapause were studied in Drosophila triauraria Bock & Wheeler and D. quadraria Bock & Wheeler, in relation to their quantitative response to photoperiods. D. quadraria from the subtropical region had no photoperiodic diapause. In D. triauraria strains, diapause was induced under LD 10:14 or 12:12, but not under LD 14:10 or longer photoperiods. Their diapause was induced more effectively and maintained longer by LD 10:14 than by LD 12:12. The duration of diapause was longer in a northern strain, but the diapause inducing process varied little among different geographical strains. Diapause incidence was 50% or lower in F1 hybrids between D. triauraria and D. quadraria and backcross progenies between F1 and D. quadraria , and about 70% in backcross progenies between F1 and D. triauraria under LD 10:14, but very low under LD 12:12. The lower incidence of diapause in these F; and backcross progenies is assumed to be due to the less efficient induction of diapause, since once diapause was induced in them, it was maintained for a long time, especially in the backcross progenies between F1 and D. triauraria. These experiments suggest that diapause induction and maintenance are different physiological processes controlled by different genetic systems.  相似文献

Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) is a tropical insect (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) that develops in Vigna unguiculata (Walp) seeds. In this beetle, there are two distinct adult forms that differ in their morphology, physiology and behaviour, the flight form and the flightless form. The development of C. maculatus is analyzed in a traditional store in Niger. During the dry season, 6 to 7 generations of the flightless form develop in the store. When the atmospheric water content increases during the rainy season, adults of the flight form appear and escape from the store. Experimental studies have shown that the adult polymorphism is induced during post-embryonic development and depends on prevailing abiotic factors during this period. The proportion of flight from adults is high when larvae develop in moist seeds (14–15% of water content). Under dry conditions (6–7% of water content) only flightless adult forms emerge from the seeds. Temperatures during development also influence adult polymorphism. In thermoperiodic conditions with 12–13% seed water content, the proportion of flight from adults increases with increasing duration of the thermophase. However, at low temperatures, a high proportion of flightless adult forms emerge, regardless of seed water content. The adaptive importance of these two abiotic factors on polymorphism induction is examined in this study.
Résumé Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) est un Coléoptère Bruchidae tropical qui se développe aux dépens des graines de Vigna unguiculata. Les adultes présentent un polymorphisme; il y a en effet deux formes, la forme voilière et la forme non voilière, distinctes par des critères morphologiques, physiologiques et comportementaux. L'évolution des populations de C. maculatus a été suivie pendant toute la saison sèche et le début de la saison des pluies dans la région de Niamey au Niger (13° LN) à l'intérieur d'un grenier traditionnel. Pendant toute la saison sèche, 6 à 7 générations de C. maculatus de la forme non voilière se succèdent à l'intérieur du grenier. Les adultes de la forme voilière, très actifs, apparaissent surtout au cours de la saison des pluies lorsque la teneur en eau de l'atmosphère et la teneur en eau des graines augmentent. Les études expérimentales réalisées au laboratoire montrent que le polymorphisme imaginal est induit au cours du développement post-embryonnaire et dépend des conditions climatiques dans lesquelles celui-ci a lieu. Le taux d'adultes de la forme voilière est élevé lorsque les larves se développent dans des graines à forte teneur en eau (14 ou 15%). Lorsque la teneur en eau des graines est faible (6 à 7%), il n'y a émergence que d'adultes de la forme non voilière. Lorsque la teneur en eau des graines est comprise entre 12 et 13%, le taux d'adultes de la forme voilière s'accroit et varie avec la durée de la thermophase. A basse température il y a toujours émergence d'adultes de la forme non voilière, quelle que soit la teneur en eau des graines. L'influence de ces deux facteurs abiotiques sur l'induction du polymorphisme imaginal joue probablement un rôle important dans les mécanismes adaptatifs permettant le maintien de cette espèce en zone tropicale.

Population structure, density and reproductive potential of perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) from 4 acidified lakes in a river system in Southern Norway were investigated. The upper 3 lakes were most affected by acidification and the number of perch caught per unit effort indicate three-fold increase in density from the upper Gjerstadvann to the lower Brøbørvann. Low density of perch in the upper lakes is explained by; 1) Abnormal mortality occurring in episodes due to acidification, probably caused by aluminium toxicity at pH = 5.2–5.4. 2). Acid water (pH ≤ 5.0) during spawning and development of eggs and larvae, resulting in recruitment failure. Juvenile mortality of perch may depend on the density of the parental stock. In the 3 upper lakes, the density of adult perch probably was too low to produce significant juvenile mortality, and in these lakes the recruitment probably depended more on the May water quality. Improved water quality increases egg hatching and survival and also benefits zooplankton production, the main food for perch during the first summer. Low population density has reduced competition for food and thus improved growth of perch in the 3 upper lakes compared to the lower lake. The perch in Brøbørvann mature at higher age and have lower individual fecundity than perch in Gjerstadvann, an effect of both slower growth and lower length specific fecundity in Brøbørvann. In Gjerstadvann, the perch therefore have a higher reproductive potential relative to the stock density, and may, when the water quality is good enough, give rise to strong year-classes and more frequent year-class fluctuations than perch in the less acid Brøbørvann.  相似文献

For many ectotherms, the annual cycle is partitioned into 'growing' (summer) and 'non-growing' (winter) seasons, and the lengths of these seasons are inversely related across a latitudinal gradient. This pattern of variation has the potential to affect diverse life-history traits profoundly. A key selective agent is size-dependent winter mortality which, with increasing latitude, places an increasing premium on attainment of large body size before the first winter of life. Winter body size is determined primarily by two factors: (1) birth date, which defines the beginning of the first growing season and (2) somatic growth rate within the first season. Using examples drawn from the Atlantic silverside, Menidia menidia (L.), and other fishes, I show how latitudinal variation in the scheduling of the spawning season, countergradient variation in the capacity for growth and reproduction, and mode of sex determination (environmental v. genetic) represent adaptations to seasonality.  相似文献
