There are few inhalation studies of nickel carcinogenesis. In this study, Wistar male rats were exposed to green nickel oxide (NiO(G)) aerosols (mass median aerodynamic diameter, 0.6 μm) for 7 h/d, 5 d/wk for up to 12 mo. The average exposure concentration was controlled at 0.3 and 1.2 mg/m3 during the exposure. For histopathological examination and measurement of the nickel concentration in rat organs, the rats were sacrificed at 3, 6, and 12 mo of exposure and 8 mo clearance period following 12 mo of exposure. The nickel content in rat lungs that was observed up to 2.6 mg after 12 mo exposure, was proportional to the exposure concentration during the exposure. The clearance of the nickel from the lungs was very slow and the biological half time was determined 7.7 mo. Although the rats were exposed continuously to NiO(G), for 12 mo and kept for 8 mo clearance period, there were no malignant tumors in any of the exposed animals.  相似文献

Six Argentinian wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars grown in nutrient solutions in controlled environment were compared for their nitrate uptake rates on a root dry weight basis. Up to 3-fold differences were observed among the cultivars at 16, 20 and 24 days from germination, either when measured by depletion from the nutrient solution in short-term experiments, or by total N accumulation in the tissue during 8 days.
No differences in total N concentration in root or shoots were found among cultivars. Although the different cultivars showed significant differences in shoot/root ratio and nitrate reductase activity (EC 1.6.6.1) in the roots, none of these parameters was correlated with the nitrate uptake rate. However, nitrate uptake was found to be positively correlated (r = 0.99) with the shoot relative growth rate of the cultivars. The three cultivars with the highest nitrate uptake rates and relative growth rates showed a positive correlation between root nitrate concentration and uptake. However, this correlation was not found in the cultivars with the lowest growth and uptake rates.
Our results indicate that the difference in nitrate uptake rate among these cultivars may only be a consequence of their differences in growth rate, and it is suggested that at least two mechanisms regulate nitrate uptake, one working when plant demand is low and another when plant demand is high.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L.) and ricebean (Vigna umbellata [Thumb.] Ohwi and Ohashi) were grown in intercrop and monoculture on Tropaqualf soils under rainfed conditions in Northern Thailand yearly from 1983 to 1986. De Wit's replacement design was used to compare intercrops and monocultures with a constant plant density equivalent to 80 000 maize or 160 000 ricebean plants ha−1. Combined nitrogen was applied at varying levels to 200 kg N ha−1. In the final two seasons the intercrop ratio of maize: ricebean was also varied. At the time of maize maturity intercrops yielded upt 49 kg ha−1 more N in the above ground plant parts than the best monoculture. Dry matter, grain and nitrogen yield of maize and ricebean in intercrop relative to their monoculture yields (RY, relative yield) were significantly greater than their respective share of the plant population. Relative yield totals (RYT) for grain, dry matter and nitrogen were always greater than 1. Nitrogen uptake per maize plant increased with progressive replacement of maize by ricebean plants. This increase was similar to that obtained by applying combined N. Available soil nitrogen tended to decrease with increasing maize:ricebean ratio. Increasing the maize:ricebean ratio increased the % of nitrogen derived from fixation in ricebean, the increase being equivalent to that obtained by decreasing combined nitrogen application. Approximately the same amount of fertilizer and soil nitrogen was taken up by maize plus ricebean in intercrop as the maize monoculture. The results suggest that the improved nitrogen economy of the intercrop resulted from the strong competitiveness of maize in the use of mineral nitrogen and the enhancement of nitrogen fixation in intercropped ricebean which made it less dependent on the depleted pool of soil nitrogen.  相似文献

Pulmonary alveoler macrophages exposedto very short chrysotile asbestos fibers present a typical cytotoxic response: extracellular releases of lactate dehydrogenase and -galactosidase, and a decrease in cellular ATP content. The objective of this study was to determine if nicotinamide and 3-aminobenzamide, two inhibitors of the ADP-ribosyl transferase, could modify the in vitro toxicity of chrysotilee fibers. After 30 min of pre-exposure with each of the two inihibitors, pulmonary alveolar macrophage monolayers were concominantly exposed for 18 hours to 50g of fibers. It was observed that, in a dose-effect relationship (5 to 30 mM), nicotinamide was very effective in reducing the extracellular liberation of the marker enzymes. At 30 mM, the enzyme releases in the medium had returned to control values; the restoration of cell viability was confirmed by ATP levels. Up to 5 mM 3-aminobenzamide did not provide any protection against chrysotile cytotoxicity. Nicotinic acid, a structural analogue of nicotinamide, but not an inhibitor of the ADP-ribosyl transferase, also showed no protective effect. Nicotinamide and 3-aminobenzamide increased the intracellular NAD+ pools, respectively by 350% and 250%. However, with or without additives, the chrysotile fibers caused a constant and significant decrease in NAD+ levels (40–55 pmoles). During the 1989 corn harvest season, numerous reports of equine leukoencephalomalacia (ELEM) outbreaks and a pulmonary edema (PPE) syndrome in swine from several regions of the United States were received by the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL), Ames, Iowa. Previous and concurrent research linked Fusarium moniliforme and fumonisin-contaminated feeds to both diseases. Chemical and mycological investigations revealed fumonisin B1 (FB1) concentrations of 20 to 360 ppm in suspect swine feeds and 8 to 117 ppm in suspect equine feeds. Nonproblem feeds contained concentrations below 8 ppm. Fusarium moniliforme and Fusarium proliferatum were isolated from both problem and nonproblem equine and swine feeds. When cultured on autoclaved corn, the F. moniliforme and F. proliferatum isolates produced respective FB1 and fumonisin B2 (FB2) that range from less than 5 to more than 2450 ppm and less than 5 to more than 1000 ppm, respectively. Isolates from both problem and nonproblem feeds produced high levels (greater than 500 ppm) in culture. Reported here is a review of chemical and mycological data resulting from the study of several cases of PPE and ELEM.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Patterns of daily activity of two ectothermic species of the trogid genus Omorgus were studied in the Kalahari of southern Africa in summer. The relationship between time and type of activity, and environmental temperature, relative humidity and light intensity, was investigated.
2. Beetle activity was biphasic, with peaks in activity at sunset and sunrise in both species.
3. Afternoon activity coincided with high temperatures and low humidity and morning activity with minimum daily temperature and maximum humidity.
4. Afternoon activity, which peaked at about 34°C and 25% r.h., consisted predominantly of complex breeding behaviour and dispersal. High temperatures are necessary for these activities.
5. In the morning feeding predominated. At this time temperature was about 27°C and r.h. above 60%. High r.h. is important because it restricts respiratory loss of water, improves food (moist hair and skin keratin) quality and may compensate for faecal water loss.
6. No evidence of competition between the two species was found.  相似文献

以黄嘌岭(X)-黄嘌呤氧化酶(XO)系统产生氧自由基,应用微量生物测定法观察慢性缺氧(5000m,10d)对大鼠氧自由基所致肺内动脉收缩的影响及内皮舒张因子(EDRF)在其中的作用。慢性缺氧大鼠有内皮的肺内动脉环对氧自由基的收缩反应较正常环境中的对照动物明显增强,加入EDRF灭活剂还原型血红蛋白(RHb)后更加显著;而加入超氧化物歧化酶(铜锌SOD)后则减弱,甚至消除。反之,不论加入RHb或SOD对氧自由基所致去内皮肺内动脉环的收缩反应均无明显影响。上述结果表明慢性缺氧引起肺内动脉收缩增强与EDRF有密切关系:慢性缺氧可能使EDRF的作用减弱,肺内动脉对氧自由基的反应性增强。表示EDRF及其与氧自由基的关系在慢性缺氧性肺动脉高压的形成中可能具有十分重要的意义。  相似文献

A weighing apparatus for automatic recording of fresh weight of shoots of spinach plants ( Spinacia oleracea L., cv. Subito) growing in nutrient solution is described. The system was tested for 17 days in a controlled environment and enabled the determination of the relative growth rate (RGR) of the shoot fresh weight. Results from three consecutive growth experiments demonstrated diurnal fluctuations in the relative growth rate of the shoot fresh weight. In general, relative growth rates were between 0.32 and 0.36 day−1 16 days after sowing and decreased to between 0.11 and 0.18 day−1 during the 12 following days. The variance between three replicate growth curves was compared with the variance of a growth function fitted through destructively obtained spinach shoot weight data.  相似文献

The growth of vegetative and reproductive shoots of Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Xanthi is analyzed with the plastochron index to estimate the relationship between corolla growth and time. The plastochron of leaves 9 through 20 declines steadily at each successive node. The flower plastochron increases steadily during the growth of an individual cyme, with the most distal flower to open having the longest plastochron. Variation in the flower plastochron is the result of variation in the rate of flower initiation, not the growth rate of individual flowers. The corolla has an extended phase of approximately constant relative growth in length (between 0.2 · d–1 and 0.3 · d–1) until a peak of growth (0.5 · d–1) 2–3 d before anthesis. Corollas also have periodic peaks and troughs of growth that are low in amplitude (0.1 · d–1), but persist throughout most of corolla development.
