This study investigated the demographic consequences of fungal infection of a perennial grass, Stipa leucotricha. The rate of parasitism of this grass by the host-specific, systemic fungus Atkinsonella texensis varies over short distances. Infection was frequent (57% of plants) in mottes (clusters of woody plants) but rarer in adjacent open grasslands (9%). To test the hypothesis that the relative performance of infected and uninfected plants differed in the two habitats, infected and uninfected genotypes were collected from mottes in a central Texas population, propagated in the green-house and then transplanted into the same site in replicate plots within mottes, at the edges of mottes, and in open grassy areas. Demographic data were recorded for 30 months over three growing seasons. Plants were observed to lose and gain infection. Infection had no significant effect on plant survival, tiller number or dry mass although infected plants tended to be larger. Uninfected plants had a significantly higher probability of setting seed but there were no differences in seed production by reproductive plants. There were significant effects of planting environment on all of these measures. Motte edges were most favorable for S. leucotricha transplants while motte interiors were least favorable and open areas were intermediate. There was no evidence of habitat x infection interactions; therefore the fungal infection had similar effects in different habitats. The high frequency of infection in motte habitats is best explained by more efficient contagious spread there. The favorability of motte edges for plant growth is substantially offset by higher infection rates at the edges of mottes.  相似文献

Summary In theoretical and empirical studies of the evolution of cooperation, the tit-for-tat strategy (i.e. cooperate unless your partner did not cooperate in the previous interaction) is widely considered to be of central importance. Nevertheless, surprisingly little is known about the conditions in which tit-for-tat appears and disappears across generations in a population of interacting individuals. Here, we apply a newly developed classifier-system model (EvA) in addressing this issue when the key features of interactions are caricatured using the iterated prisoner's dilemma game. Our simple representation of behavioural strategies as algorithms composed of two interacting rules allowed us to determine conditions in which tit-for-tat can replace noncooperative strategies and vice versa. Using direct game-theoretic analysis and simulations with the EvA model, we determined that no strategy is evolutionarily stable, but larger population sizes and longer sequences of interactions between individuals can yield transient dominance by tit-for-tat. Genetic drift among behaviourally equivalent strategies is the key mechanism underlying this dominance. Our analysis suggests that tit-for-tat could be important in nature for cognitively simple organisms of limited memory capacity, in strongly kin-selected or group-selected populations, when interaction sequences between individuals are relatively short, in moderate-sized populations of widely interacting individuals and when defectors appear in the population with moderate frequency.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Phenotypic plasticity, the potential of specific traits of a genotype to respond to different environmental conditions, is an important adaptive mechanism for minimizing potentially adverse effects of environmental fluctuations in space and time. Suaeda maritima shows morphologically different forms on high and low areas of the same salt marsh. Our aims were to examine whether these phenotypic differences occurred as a result of plastic responses to the environment. Soil redox state, indicative of oxygen supply, was examined as a factor causing the observed morphological and physiological differences.

Methods

Reciprocal transplantation of seedlings was carried out between high and low marsh sites on a salt marsh and in simulated tidal-flow tanks in a glasshouse. Plants from the same seed source were grown in aerated or hypoxic solution, and roots were assayed for lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alcohol dehydrogenase, and changes in their proteome.

Key Results

Transplanted (away) seedlings and those that remained in their home position developed the morphology characteristic of the home or away site. Shoot Na+, Cl and K+ concentrations were significantly different in plants in the high and low marsh sites, but with no significant difference between home and away plants at each site. High LDH activity in roots of plants grown in aeration and in hypoxia indicated pre-adaptation to fluctuating root aeration and could be a factor in the phenotypic plasticity and growth of S. maritima over the full tidal range of the salt marsh environment. Twenty-six proteins were upregulated under hypoxic conditions.

Conclusions

Plasticity of morphological traits for growth form at extremes of the soil oxygenation spectrum of the tidal salt marsh did not correlate with the lack of physiological plasticity in the constitutively high LDH found in the roots.  相似文献

Solid organ transplant recipients generally show reduced immunogenicity to various vaccines. We aimed to assess the immunogenicity of the immune response among orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) recipients after the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination. A systematic search was performed to evaluate immunogenicity or adverse events reported after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. The pooled analysis of 20 studies showed a humoral immune response rate of 0.70 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.63-0.77) after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination among OLT recipients. The immunogenicity among OLT recipients was significantly lower compared to the overall population and healthy controls, with odds ratios (ORs) of 0.80 and 0.69. However, it was significantly higher than that of patients receiving other organ transplants, especially kidneys, with an OR of 1.50. Male sex, old age, chronic kidney disease, obesity, and multiple or high immunosuppressant doses significantly increased the risk of unresponsiveness in patients with OLT. The overall incidence of any adverse event after vaccination was 0.68 (95% CI, 0.55-0.81), similar to that of control. OLT recipients had an overall humoral immune response rate of 70% after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, which is lower than that of healthy controls but favourable compared to those of other solid organ transplant recipients.  相似文献

以栓皮栎天然分布的北界(北京,NP)、中心(陕西,CP)和南界(云南,SP)3个种源的实生苗为试验材料,通过在北缘(北京)和南缘(云南)的交互移植试验,探讨不同种源幼苗光合生理性状的差异及其来源。结果表明:(1)各种源在北缘生境下的潜在最大净光合速率(Pmax)、光饱和点(LSP)、羧化效率(CE)、光呼吸速率(Rp)、光化学猝灭系数(PQ)均显著高于南缘生境(P0.05);(2)南界种源(SP)则具有更高的CE、Rp、PSⅡ原初光能转换效率(F_v/F_m)和PSⅡ潜在活性(F_v/F_o)(SPCPNP);北界种源(NP)具有更高的非光化学猝灭系数(NPQ)(NPCPSP);(3)生境和种源的交互作用对最大羧化速率(A_(max))和LSP影响显著,Amax在南北缘生境下均以当地种源的最高;而LSP在北缘生境下以中心种源(CP)最高,在南缘生境下以北界种源(NP)最高。不同生境对表观量子效率(AQY)、CO2补偿点(CCP)、暗呼吸速率(Rd)以及叶绿素荧光参数如F_v/F_m、F_v/F_o以及NPQ影响不显著,其中AQY和Rd不受生境变化及其与种源的交互影响,这可能与栓皮栎自身遗传因素有关;(4)生长表现方面,栓皮栎幼苗在南、北不同生境下生长表现出明显差异,各种源在北缘生境下生长状况均明显优于南缘生境,且均以南界种源(SP)生长优势明显。  相似文献

Geographic variation in phenotypes can result from proximate environmental effects as well as from underlying genetic factors. Reciprocal transplant experiments, in which organisms are moved from one area to another, offer a powerful technique to partition the effects of these two factors. However, many studies that have utilized this technique have focused on the post-hatching organism only and ignored potential effects of environmental influences acting during embryonic development. We examined the phenotypic responses of hatchling scincid lizards ( Lampropholis guichenoti ) incubated in the laboratory under thermal regimes characteristic of natural nests in two study areas in southeastern Australia. Although the sites were less than 120 km apart, lizards from these two areas differed in thermal regimes of natural nests, and in hatchling phenotypes (morphology, locomotor performance). We incubated eggs from each area under the thermal regimes typical of both sites. Some of the traits we measured (e.g. hatchling mass and snout-vent length) showed little or no phenotypic plasticity in response to differences in incubation conditions, whereas other traits (e.g. incubation period, tail length, inter-limb length, body shape, locomotor performance) were strongly influenced by the thermal regime experienced by the embryo. Thus, a significant proportion of the geographic variation in morphology and locomotor performance of hatchling lizards may be directly induced by differences in nest temperatures rather than by genetic divergence. We suggest that future studies using the reciprocal transplant design should consider environmental influences on all stages of the life-history, including embryonic development as well as post-hatching life.  相似文献

Recent studies of optic nerve regeneration in goldfish have indicated that the optic tectum plays an important role in modulating the induction of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) gene expression in regenerating retinal ganglion cells (Hieber, Agranoff, and Goldman, 1992, J. Neurochem. 58:1009–1015). These observations suggest that induction of these genes is regulated by brain target regions. The appearance of nAChR mRNA in the developing rat retina coincides with a time when ganglion cells are sending axons to their brain targets (Hoover and Goldman, 1992, Exp. Eye Res. 54:561–571). Might a mechanism similar to that seen during goldfish optic nerve regenerationalso mediate induction of nAChR gene expression during development of the mammalian retina? This possibility was tested by either transplanting embryonic rat retina to different brain regions, or explanting it to organ culture and assaying for nAChR gene expression. These studies showed that induction of the nAChR genes in developing rat retina is independent of the environment in which the retina develops. These results indicate that either the retinal microenvironment or a signal intrinsic to the retinal ganglion cell is responsible for this induction. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Local adaptation occurs when different environments are dominated by different specialist genotypes, each of which is relatively fit in its local conditions and relatively unfit under other conditions. Analogously, ecological species sorting occurs when different environments are dominated by different competing species, each of which is relatively fit in its local conditions. The simplest theory predicts that spatial, but not temporal, environmental variation selects for local adaptation (or generates species sorting), but this prediction is difficult to test. Although organisms can be reciprocally transplanted among sites, doing so among times seems implausible. Here, we describe a reciprocal transplant experiment testing for local adaptation or species sorting of lake bacteria in response to both temporal and spatial variation in water chemistry. The experiment used a –80°C freezer as a “time machine.” Bacterial isolates and water samples were frozen for later use, allowing transplantation of older isolates “forward in time” and newer isolates “backward in time.” Surprisingly, local maladaptation predominated over local adaptation in both space and time. Such local maladaptation may indicate that adaptation, or the analogous species sorting process, fails to keep pace with temporal fluctuations in water chemistry. This hypothesis could be tested with more finely resolved temporal data.  相似文献
