Mutations in neuromusculin,a gene encoding a cell adhesion molecule,cause nervous system defects

The Drosophila neuromusculin (nrm) gene encodes an immunoglobulin-like (Ig-like) cell adhesion molecule expressed in the precursors of the embryonic peripheral nervous system (PNS), in the midline precursors of the central nervous system (CNS), and in muscles. During the initial phases of CNS axonogenesis, nrm is expressed in cells involved in the development of commissures and longitudinal tracts. Mutations which alter expression of nrm mRNAs cause aberrant development of commissures and longitudinal axon pathways. Defects in the PNS and muscles of nrm mutants are also observed. In most nrm embryos, abnormal development can be detected in a subset of abdominal segments; however, in approximately 1 of 10 nrm embryos, the defects extend to all segments. Herein, we present evidence that nrm plays an important role in early morphogenesis, possibly by mediating or facilitating inductive cell contacts and movements.     

Multiple paternity in the red-eyed treefrog Agalychnis callidryas (Cope)

DNA fingerprinting of tadpoles from two different ‘one female-two male’ matings of the red-eyed treefrog, Agalychnis callidryas, revealed multiple paternity of offspring. Offspring were assigned paternity based on bands shared with the putative father, but not shared between putative fathers or with the mother. Paternity was split 44/56% and 36/64% in two matings. These results do not support a hypothesis of sperm priority in access to unfertilized eggs by primary males. Multiple paternity may be commonplace in species of anurans with matings by multiple males.     

The effect of manganese oxides and manganese ion on growth and siderophore production by Azotobacter vinelandii

The addition of manganese oxides to iron-limited medium promoted the formation of the pyoverdin siderophore azotobactin by Azotobacter vinelandii. When active-MnO₂ was used, there was greatly decreased iron uptake into the cells, hyperproduction of azotobactin and the abiotic, chemical destruction or adsorbtion of the catechol siderophores azotochelin and aminochelin by this strong oxidizing agent. Although the iron content of the cells was the same as iron-limited cells, the growth of cells in medium with active-MnO₂ was increased 1.5- to 2.5-fold over iron-limited controls. This growth promotion was not caused by iron contaminating the oxide or by manganese solubilized from the oxide. Soluble 0.05–4 mm Mn²⁺ inhibited the growth of iron-limited cells and had a minimal effect on iron uptake, but caused hyperproduction of azotobactin. This later effect was caused by the inhibition of soluble ferric reductase, in a manner identical to that previously observed for Zn²⁺. These results suggest that active-MnO₂ may interfere with a surface-localized iron uptake site, possibly another ferric reductase. The reason for the growth promotion by active-MnO₂ remains unknown, but is most likely related to decreased oxygen toxicity.

中国洞穴盲虾一新种(十足目:匙指虾科)

本文记述采自广西桂林洞穴中的盲米虾属一新种,半盲米虾Ｔｙｐｈｌｏｃａｒｉｄｉｎａｓｅｍｉｔｙｐｈｌａｔａｓｐ．ｎｏｖ．,新种眼角膜色素未完全退化,额剑上下缘均具齿。

山东半岛近岸水域铃苔虫属一新种（苔藓动物门：唇口目：马孔苔虫科）

双型铃苔虫,新种Ｃｏｄｏｎｅｌｌｉｎａ ｂｉｆｏｒｍｉｓ ｓｐ．ｎｏｖ．群体双型,被覆－直立。单层群体个虫细狭;口下鸟头体小;颚骨圆三角形、半椭圆形。双层群体个虫较宽;口下鸟头体大,颚骨均呈匙形,其末端部分均膨胀。新种双层群体个虫的口下鸟头体颚骨形态和卵胞表面孔饰与口盖铃苔虫Ｃｏｄｏｎｅｌｌｉｎａ ｏｐｅｒｃｕｌａｔａＭａｗａｔａｒｉ,１９５６有些相似,但新种在群体生长方式以及在室口形态、口盖表面
