The spotted stem borer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe, 1885) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), an invasive pest of wild and cultivated grasses in Asia and Africa, was found for the first time during periodic surveys of maize fields in the East Mediterranean region of Turkey in September and October 2014. The pest was recorded in maize fields of three of four provinces surveyed (Adana, Hatay and Osmaniye; it was not detected in Icel province). The Mediterranean corn stalk borer, Sesamia nonagrioides Lefebvre (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is the dominant maize pest in the East Mediterranean region of Turkey, followed by the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). The new invasive species comprised 4.9% of the total number of collected lepidopteran pests collected from maize stems and cobs in locations infested by C. partellus. No natural enemies of the new pest were recorded during our surveys. We discuss possible interactions among these three lepidopteran pests sharing the same habitat, prospects for control of C. partellus by the control methods currently used against S. nonagrioides and O. nubilalis, and also speculate on the path of invasion taken by C. partellus into Turkey.  相似文献

Screening large populations for carriers of known or de novo rare single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is required both in Targeting induced local lesions in genomes (TILLING) experiments in plants and in screening of human populations. We previously suggested an approach that combines the mathematical field of compressed sensing with next‐generation sequencing to allow such large‐scale screening. Based on pooled measurements, this method identifies multiple carriers of heterozygous or homozygous rare alleles while using only a small fraction of resources. Its rigorous mathematical foundations allow scalable and robust detection, and provide error correction and resilience to experimental noise. Here we present a large‐scale experimental demonstration of our computational approach, in which we targeted a TILLING population of 1024 Sorghum bicolor lines to detect carriers of de novo SNPs whose frequency was less than 0.1%, using only 48 pools. Subsequent validation confirmed that all detected lines were indeed carriers of the predicted mutations. This novel approach provides a highly cost‐effective and robust tool for biologists and breeders to allow identification of novel alleles and subsequent functional analysis.  相似文献

Incorporating the Gd3+ rare earth ion in the LiCaBO3 host lattice resulted in narrow‐band UV‐B emission peaking at 315 nm, with excitation at 274 nm. The LiCaBO3:Gd3+ phosphor was synthesized via the solid‐state diffusion method. The structural, morphological and luminescence properties of this phosphor were characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization of the as‐prepared phosphors is also reported here. XRD studies confirmed the crystal formation and phase purity of the prepared phosphors. A series of different dopant concentrations was synthesized and the concentration‐quenching effect was studied. Critical energy transfer distance between activator ions was determined and the mechanism governing the concentration quenching is also reported in this paper. Coleopteran phylogeny was analysed using mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) sequence. The optimal tree topology was given by the dataset consisted of all coding genes except for the exclusion of the 3rd codon sites (mtDNA12) using Bayesian Inference Method. This topology supports the monophyly of four suborders, and the sister group relationship between Adephaga and Myxophaga and between Polyphaga and Archostemata. In Polyphaga, Cucujiformia and Elateroidea formed independent node respectively, the remaining species grouped together except for Cyphon sp, among which, only Cucujiformia and Scarabaeiformia were supported as monophyletic group, respectively. Within Cucujiformia, the monophyly of Chrysomeloidea, Curculionoidea and Tenebrionoidea were supported respectively, among which Tenebrionoidea occupied the basal position of Cucujiformia. Cleroidea grouped together with Bothrideridae and Coccinellidae, and formed an independent node, which lead to the paraphyly of Cucujoidea. The monophyly of Elateriformia was not supported because of the division of Scirtoidea and Buprestoidea. Furthermore, using a Bayesian relaxed clock calibrated with fossil data, we estimated that most superfamilies within Polyphaga originated in the Jurassic period.  相似文献

Background: There is a lack of consensus about the productivity–richness relationship, with several recent studies suggesting that it is not productivity but other factors that are the important drivers that determine species richness.

Aims: Here, we examine the relationship between productivity, functional group dominance and plant species richness at the plot scale in Tibetan Plateau meadows. These alpine meadows are ideal to examine the species productivity-richness relationship because they have a very high species richness, a large gradient in productivity, and can be dominated by either graminoids (grasses and sedges) or forbs.

Methods: We measured plant species richness and above-ground biomass along a natural gradient of functional group abundance in 44 plots distributed across five natural, winter-grazed but otherwise undisturbed sites in the eastern part of the Qing-Hai Tibetan Plateau, in Gansu province, China in 2008.

Results: Graminoid abundance (i.e. graminoid biomass as percent of the total above-ground biomass) explained 39% of plot differences in species richness while neither productivity nor the biomass of the three most abundant plant species, either individually or combined, were a significant predictor of species richness.

Conclusions: Our results show that within these alpine meadows, a shift from graminoid to forb dominance, rather than the individual dominant species or productivity itself, is strongly correlated with species richness. Thus, differences in functional group abundance can be a strong driver of observed plant species richness patterns.  相似文献

BackgroundThe massive scale-up of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) has led to a substantial increase in malaria vector insecticide resistance as well as in increased outdoor transmission, both of which hamper the effectiveness and efficiency of ITN and IRS. Long-lasting microbial larvicide can be a cost-effective new supplemental intervention tool for malaria control.Methods/designWe will implement the long-lasting microbial larvicide intervention in 28 clusters in two counties in western Kenya. We will test FourStar controlled release larvicide (6 % by weight Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and 1 % Bacillus sphaerius) by applying FourStar controlled release granule formulation, 90-day briquettes, and 180-day briquettes in different habitat types. The primary endpoint is clinical malaria incidence rate and the secondary endpoint is malaria vector abundance and transmission intensity. The intervention will be conducted as a two-step approach. First, we will conduct a four-cluster trial (two clusters per county, with one of the two clusters randomly assigned to the intervention arm) to optimize the larvicide application scheme. Second, we will conduct an open-label, cluster-randomized trial to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the larvicide. Fourteen clusters in each county will be assigned to intervention (treatment) or no intervention (control) by a block randomization on the basis of clinical malaria incidence, vector density, and human population size per site. We will treat each treatment cluster with larvicide for three rounds at 4-month intervals, followed by no treatment for the following 8 months. Next, we will switch the control and treatment sites. The former control sites will receive three rounds of larvicide treatment at appropriate time intervals, and former treatment sites will receive no larvicide. We will monitor indoor and outdoor vector abundance using CO2-baited CDC light traps equipped with collection bottle rotators. Clinical malaria data will be aggregated from government-run malaria treatment centers.DiscussionSince current first-line vector intervention methods do not target outdoor transmission and will select for higher insecticide resistance, new methods beyond bed nets and IRS should be considered. Long-lasting microbial larviciding represents a promising new tool that can target both indoor and outdoor transmission and alleviate the problem of pyrethroid resistance. It also has the potential to diminish costs by reducing larvicide reapplications. If successful, it could revolutionize malaria vector control in Africa, just as long-lasting bed nets have done.

The natural 15N abundance of amide-exporting nodules was compared to that of shoots in 12 plant species. Nodules were statistically less abundant in 15N than shoots in one of three cultivars of Pisum sativum L., in Vicia faba L. and in Medicago sativa L., but the 15N depletion of nodules was very samall. Nodules were statistically more abundant in 15N than shoots in Trifolium pratense L., depending on time during the growing season, Cyamopsis tetragonaloba L. Taub. and 7 Lupinus species, but the enrichment was small except for C. tetragonalova and 6 Lupinus species. Nodules of 3 Lupinus species infected with Rhizobium lupini isolated from Lupinus subcarnosa Hook, were only slightly enriched in 15N, but nodules of two of these species were substantially enriched in 15N when infected with a mix of other Rhizobium lupini strains. The third species, L. texensis Hook., was not infected by this mix of strains. Differences in 15N abundance between nodules and other tissues of amide-exporting and ureide-exporting nodules from several studies are tabulated. All ureide-exporting nodules in this tabulation are enriched in 15N. Amide-exporting nodules are considerably more variable in this regard. These results confirm that events associated with ureide synthesis or transport cannot be the sole cause of the substantial 15N enrichment seen in nodules.  相似文献

Construction of a physical map of the chloroplast DNA from Phaseolus vulgaris showed that this circular molecule is segmentally organized into four regions. Unlike other chloroplast DNAs which have analogous organization, two single-copy regions that separate two inverted repeats have been demonstrated to exist in both relative orientations, giving rise to two populations of DNA molecules.Hybridization studies using individual rRNA and tRNA species revealed the location of a set of rRNA genes and at least seven tRNA genes in each inverted repeat region, a minimum of 17 tRNA genes in the large single-copy region and one tRNA gene in the small single-copy region. The tRNA genes code for 24 tRNA species corresponding to 16 amino acids. Comparison of this gene map with those of other chloroplast DNAs suggests that DNA sequence rearrangements, involving some tRNA genes, have occurred.  相似文献

Rotifer community structure of the oligotrophic, alpine lake KGnigssee was investigated from October 1982 to October 1983. Twenty different species were found, including several cold-stenothermal and oligotrophic species. Polyarthra vulgaris/dolichoptera, Kellicottia longispina and Keratella cochlearis were the most abundant species throughout the year, comprising 90% of the total rotifer community (2.8 × 106 individuals m–2, maximum). The remainder of the rotifer community was represented by as many as eight species which occured for a short time in summer and autumn. The rotifer community was limited to the upper 50 m (85–100%) in which most (60–80%) of the rotifers preferred the trophogenic layer (0–20 m). Species-specific depth preferences were observed. Rotifer abundance and distribution are discussed in terms of the specific environmental conditions in Königssee. The rotifer community of Konigssee is compared to that of Lake Constance in its former oligotrophic state.  相似文献
