Summary Plant species composition in plantation monoculture of the native Gympie Messmate (Eucalyptus cloeziana F. Muell.) was assessed and compared with native eucalypt forest and cleared grazing land in southeast Queensland, Australia. A total of 18 sites (11 in the plantations, four in native eucalypt forests and three on cleared grazing land) were surveyed. The four plantation age classes during the 18‐month survey period were 0.3–1.8 (very young), 2.1–3.8 (young), 15–16.5 (mid‐aged) and 38–40.5 (old) years of age. Significantly more native plant species were recorded in the plantations, regardless of their age, than on cleared grazing land. The number of native plant species in the old plantations was not significantly different from the native eucalypt forests. Native tree and shrub species richness increased significantly with plantation age. Two species (Ricinocarpos speciosus Muell. Arg. and Xanthostemon oppositifolius F. M. Bailey) listed as Vulnerable and one species (Alyxia magnifolia F. M. Bailey) listed as Rare were recorded in the old plantations. Two Rare species (A. magnifolia and Acianthus amplexicaulis (F. M. Bailey) Rolfe) were recorded in the native eucalypt forests. Exotic plant species, consisting mainly of herbs, grasses and shrubs in the plantations, were significantly more abundant in the very young and young plantations. However, the number of exotic species decreased significantly with increasing age of the plantations. The results suggest that even small‐scale plantation can increase landscape heterogeneity and help protect biodiversity.  相似文献

Reports of positive associations between allozymic heterozygosity and measures of fitness are routine, but it has not been possible to distinguish between the two preeminent explanations of the phenomenon, dominance and overdominance. We tested several of the assumptions of these hypotheses in our study of the relationship between electrophoretic genotype and three life history traits in loblolly pines (Pinus taeda L.). Traits examined included the survival and growth of selfed and outcrossed progeny of 45 maternal trees, and maternal fecundity, measured as the number of surviving progeny per mother tree. Inbreeding depression was severe; the relative fitness of the selfed progeny was only 8% that of the outcrossed progeny. We found a heterozygote fecundity advantage, which should have resulted in an excess of rare alleles in the progeny. Instead, there was evidence of severe survival selection against rare alleles in both heterozygous and homozygous forms. The deficit of rare alleles averaged 69 and 50% in the selfed and outcrossed progeny, respectively. The one allele in the sample that we should have suspected of being maintained by overdominance (a PGI2 mid-frequency allele) appeared to be overdominant for outcrossed height growth and probably for fecundity as well. Multiple-locus genotype explained very little of the variation in growth, however, and rather than seeing evidence for overdominance as a force in maintaining most of the observed polymorphism, we were left to explain, in the face of the severe survival selection, why the rare alleles were present at all. Projection of the stand into the future through computer simulation showed how balancing selection acting on differential growth, fecundity, and mortality among genotypes could, over the life of the stand, account for the maintenance of the rare alleles in the population.  相似文献

Summary One of the foremost technical issues addressed in reintroduction and restoration projects is the feasibility of establishing living plants. To advance the recovery process, the germination requirements of 201 threatened Western Australian seed‐bearing taxa representing a range of life forms, families and ecophysiological characteristics were studied. Procedures used to stimulate germination in otherwise dormant seed involved pretreatment using thermal shock, scarification, seed coat removal, soaking in an aqueous smoke solution and/or additions of the growth hormone gibberellic acid (GA3). Sixty‐one taxa germinated under the basic trial conditions of light (12‐ h photoperiod), temperature (constant 15°C) and moisture, without additional pretreatments. These taxa were generally those with canopy‐stored seeds in the families Proteaceae and Casuarinaceae, and small‐seeded taxa in Myrtaceae. Taxa with soil‐stored seeds required single or multiple cues to stimulate germination. Seeds in the families Fabaceae and Mimosaceae were dependent on cracking of the seed coat, mechanically through nicking of the testa or through thermal shock, as were several non‐leguminous species of the Sterculiaceae and Liliaceae. Complete or partial removal of seed coats, in conjunction with GA3 enhanced germination percentage in some taxa of the Myoporaceae, Lamiaceae and Myrtaceae. Application of GA3 also enhanced germination percentage in members of the Epacridaceae. Several taxa previously stimulated by aqueous smoke solutions were equally responsive to additions of GA3 after complete seed coat removal. In general, species with seed weights greater than 10 mg germinated better under a range of conditions than those with lighter seeds. There was no difference in germinability between resprouter and seeder species, and no obvious relationship between seed weight and germination rate. In the light of previous studies these results indicate that the relationship between germination requirements and ecophysiological characteristics is similar for both threatened and common species. These data will enable better prediction of likely dormancy breaking cues for other related species and will greatly assist the process of recovery and restoration work for mining operations and community bushland regeneration as well as single species reintroductions.  相似文献

During early August to late September 1998 we examined seed dispersal in the tree species Jatropha standleyi (widespread) and J. chamelensis (endemic; Euphorbiaceae) at the Estacion de Biologia Chamela, Jalisco, Mexico. Using general linear models, we found that seed removal from beneath the parental canopy did not differ between the two species and that seed removal was correlated with both seed availability on the ground and rodent predation. We inferred that seed removal was largely mediated by rodents and determined that if a seed was not removed within 4d (approx. 16% chance), it was highly unlikely to be removed at all (approx. 3.5% chance) for both species. We note that although differences in patterns of seed removal may not explain the observed differences in range size, differences between the two species in seed crop size arc similar to patterns found in other endemic/widespread species pairs.  相似文献

We analyzed the physiological response of the Mediterranean evergreen species (Arbutus unedo L., Cistus incanus L., Erica arborea L., Erica multiflora L., Phillyrea latifolia L., Pistacia lentiscus L., Quercus ilex L., and Rosmarinus officinalis L.) to winter low air temperatures. In occasion of two cold events, in February 2005 (T min = 1.8 °C), and January 2006 (T min = 3.1 °C and minimum T air = −0.40 °C during the nights preceding the measurements), R. officinalis, C. incanus, and E. multiflora had the highest net photosynthetic rate (P N) decrease (73 %, mean value) with respect to the winter P N maximum, followed by A. unedo (62 %), P. latifolia and P. lentiscus (54 %, mean value), E. arborea (49 %), and Q. ilex (44 %). Among the considered species, Q. ilex was able to maintain P N near the maximum for 150 min during the day, A. unedo, P. lentiscus, E. arborea, P. latifolia, E. multiflora, and R. officinalis for 60 min, and C. incanus for 30 min. The calculated mean winter daily P N ranged from 7.9±0.6 (Q. ilex) to 2.8±0.5 (R. officinalis) μmol(CO2) m−2 s−1. During the study period, chlorophyll (Chl) content decreased by 36 % on an average in the two cold events, and the carotenoid (Car) to Chl ratio increased by 133 % in Q. ilex, having the highest value in January 2006. Principal component analysis underlined the highest cold resistance of Q. ilex by high P N and high Car/Chl ratio. On the contrary, R. officinalis and C. incanus had the lowest cold resistance by the highest P N decrease and the lowest Car/Chl (C. incanus). Thus, winter stress could be an additional limitation to Mediterranean evergreen species production, and the capacity of the species to maintain P N near 90–100 % during winter is determinant for biomass accumulation.  相似文献

The discharge of vasoconstrictor pathways arising in the CNS is largely unmodified as it passes through the sympathetic ganglia to the vasculature. The underlying synaptic events have been revealed by intracellular recordings from sympathetic paravertebral ganglion cells in the course of ongoing and reflex activity in anesthetized animals, first made in Skok’s Laboratory in Kyiv (Ukraine). Each preganglionic neuron diverges to contact a number of post-ganglionic neurons, on each of which several pre-ganglionic inputs converge. However, only suprathreshold “strong,” or “dominant” synapses are effective in transmitting the CNS signals. Strong synapses differ from the other subthreshold “weak,” or “accessory” inputs: (a) excitatory synaptic currents are >1 nA in their amplitude, (b) 3 to ≈>30 times more quanta of acetylcholine are released, (c) pre-synaptic Ca2+ entry through channels resistant to all-known antagonists triggers acetylcholine release, and (d) post-synaptic Ca2+ entry boosts and prolongs the nicotinic current. While the majority of postganglionic neurons have only one strong input, a proportion receives two or, rarely, three such inputs. In cells with multiple strong inputs, an equivalent number of discrete Ca2+ currents can be evoked at distinct foci electrically distant from the soma, suggesting that each strong input has a unique dendritic association with a cluster of Ca2+ channels. When strong preganglionic inputs are destroyed, residual weak synapses sprout and rapidly restore the suprathreshold connections. While much remains to be discovered about how strong synapses are established, their high safety factor ensures the wide and secure distribution of vasoconstrictor command signals from the CNS. Armadillos, anteaters, and sloths (Order Xenarthra) comprise 1 of the 4 major clades of placental mammals. Isolated in South America from the other continental landmasses, xenarthrans diverged over a period of about 65 Myr, leaving more than 200 extinct genera and only 31 living species. The presence of both ancestral and highly derived anatomical features has made morphoanatomical analyses of the xenarthran evolutionary history difficult, and previous molecular analyses failed to resolve the relationships within armadillo subfamilies. We investigated the presence/absence patterns of retroposons from approximately 7,400 genomic loci, identifying 35 phylogenetically informative elements and an additional 39 informative rare genomic changes (RGCs). DAS-short interspersed elements (SINEs), previously described only in the Dasypus novemcinctus genome, were found in all living armadillo genera, including the previously unsampled Chlamyphorus, but were noticeably absent in sloths. The presence/absence patterns of the phylogenetically informative retroposed elements and other RGCs were then compared with data from the DNA sequences of the more than 12-kb flanking regions of these retroposons. Together, these data provide the first fully resolved genus tree of xenarthrans. Interestingly, multiple evidence supports the grouping of Chaetophractus and Zaedyus as a sister group to Euphractus within Euphractinae, an association that was not previously demonstrated. Also, flanking sequence analyses favor a close phylogenetic relationship between Cabassous and Tolypeutes within Tolypeutinae. Finally, the phylogenetic position of the subfamily Chlamyphorinae is resolved by the noncoding sequence data set as the sister group of Tolypeutinae. The data provide a stable phylogenetic framework for further evolutionary investigations of xenarthrans and important information for defining conservation priorities to save the diversity of one of the most curious groups of mammals.  相似文献

研究的底栖介形类化石采自湖南锡矿山剖面晚泥盆世地层,共30属61种,含1新属,2未定属,13新种和20未定种。在晚泥盆世F/F生物集群灭绝事件之前和以后,根据底栖介形类的演化特征,分为正常期,包括3—5层;灭绝期,即6层;残存期,包括7,8,9a-c,11—13,15层;和复苏期,即20层以上地层。在湖南锡矿山上泥盆统剖面上,底栖介形类动物群遭受到F/F灭绝事件的重创,正常期的37种中仅11种在残存期中幸免于难,24种在本剖面上消失,灭绝种约占65%。对于F/F生物集群灭绝事件的发生机制,虽有多种解释,但造成底栖介形类灭绝的主要原因更可能是缺(贫)氧或含毒环境和气候变化。根据底栖介形类生态组合特征,正常期的介形类动物群代表近岸浅水开阔海台地环境;复苏期的介形类动物群可能代表半局限海台地环境。根据正常期、残存期和复苏期介形类动物群的组成特征,它们所生存的海底为正常的含氧环境。  相似文献
