The protein responsible for the Na+/Li+ exchange activity across the erythrocyte membrane has not been cloned or isolated. It has been suggested that a Na+/H+ exchanger could be responsible for the Na+/Li+ exchange activity across the erythrocyte membrane. Previously, we reported that in the trout erythrocyte, the Li+/H+ exchange activity (mediated by the Na+/H+ exchanger βNHE) and the Na+/Li+ exchange activity respond differently to cAMP, DMA (dimethyl-amiloride) and O2. We concluded that the DMA insensitive Na+/Li+ exchange activity originates from a different protein. To further examine these findings, we measured Li+ efflux in fibroblasts expressing the βNHE as the only Na+/H+ exchanger. Moreover, the internal pH of these cells was monitored with a fluorescent probe. Our findings indicate that acidification
of fibroblasts expressing the Na+/H+ exchanger βNHE, induces a Na+ stimulated Li+ efflux activity in trout erythrocytes. This exchange activity, however, is DMA sensitive and therefore differs from the DMA
insensitive Na+/Li+ exchange activity. In these fibroblasts no significant DMA insensitive Na+/Li+ exchange activity was found. These results support the hypothesis that the trout erythrocyte Na+/Li+ exchange activity is not mediated by the Na+/H+ exchanger (βNHE) present in these membranes.

Biogenic peptides and amines associated with the chromaffin tissue in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), European eel (Anguilla anguilla), spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) and Atlantic hagfish (Myxine glutinosa) were identified utilizing immunohistochemical techniques. Within the posterior cardinal vein (PCV) in cod, trout and eel, a subpopulation of chromaffin cells displayed immunoreactivity to tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and dopamine--hydroxylase (DH) but not to phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase (PNMT). TH-like immunorectivity was observed within cells in hagfish hearts. Nerve fibres displaying vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) immunoreactivity and pituitary adenylyl cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) immunoreactivity innervated cod, trout and ell chromaffin cells. In eel, neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like and peptide YY (PYY)-like immunoreactivity was located within cells in the PCV, including chromaffin cells. Serotonin-like immunoreactivity was observed within eel and cod chromaffin cells and in hagfish hearts. In the dogfish axillary bodies, nerves displaying TH-like, VIP-like, PACAP-like, substance P-like and galanin-like immunoreactivity were observed. Synopsis Diet, habitat use, diel and seasonal activity and a number of population parameters were studied on ruffe,Gymnocephalus cernuus, introduced to Mildevatn, western Norway. This lake is sited outside the natural range of the ruffe and has a lower fish
diversity and a different fish species composition than within its native range. From June through September the ruffe was
planktivorous and mainly caught at 4 to 6 m depth in the benthic zone. At other times of year ruffe was feeding on zoobenthos
and caught deeper in the benthic zone. Ruffe was mainly day active. Zooplankton feeding during summer is the clearest difference
compared to ruffe populations living within its natural range. Presence of large zooplankton organisms available for ruffe
is suggested as the main reason for the difference found in food choice. The availability of large zooplankton is probably
due to community structure caused by a predator and lack of interspecific competition for zooplankton in the deeper parts
of the lake. Piscivorous brown trout.Salmo trutta, restrict the habitat of threespined stickleback,Gasterosteus aculeatus, to the zone of littoral vegetation, allowing high densities of larger zooplankton species likeBythotrephes longimanus to be present in the lake. Summary Microtubules and 10 nm-filaments appear to be involved in the functions of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The presence of microtubules in the RPE of light-adapted eyes, but not in dark-adapted eyes, suggests that they may be involved primarily in organelle movement. Larvae of anadromous rainbow smelt originating in various spawning tributaries are retained in the St Lawrence estuary. We proposed that these smelt represent one population genetically differentiated from adjacent populations characterized by geographically distinct larval retention areas. We also analysed four landlocked populations to evaluate the phylogenetic basis of dwarf and normal-sized phenotypes and their relation to an adromous smelt. A phylogenetic distinction was revealed between anadromous and landlocked smelt, with only one of the two mtDNA phylogenetic groups of anadromous fish observed among landlocked smelt. Significant geographical heterogeneity in the distribution of mtDNA genotypes was observed among landlocked smelt, suggesting that dwarfism in smelt may be polyphyletic in origin. Selection of habitat to avoid predation may affect the diet of young-of-year (YOY) lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush). YOY lake trout may use inshore habitat to avoid predation; this habitat may be sub-optimal for growth. To test this, YOY
lake trout were penned in nearshore and offshore pelagic areas of two arctic lakes. Toolik Lake had a lake trout population,
the other lake, S6, did not. YOY lake trout in Toolik Lake lost weight, but those offshore lost less weight. The YOY lake
trout in Lake S6 gained weight and those offshore gained more weight.
The primary diet item of the YOY lake trout in both lakes during this experiment was the zooplankter Diaptomis probilofensis; it was also one of the most abundant species. However, its density inshore in Lake S6 was similar to inshore and offshore
densities in Toolik Lake. The increased availability of alternative zooplankton prey in Lake S6 may account for the growth
differential of YOY lake trout in Lake S6 relative to Toolik Lake.
Bioenergetic modeling of YOY lake trout suggests that growth similar to that in the offshore of Lake S6 would be necessary
for successful recruitment. If the reduced zooplankton availability in Toolik Lake leads to the reduced growth of YOY in the
inshore and offshore pelagic areas, then these fish will be more susceptable to winter predation/starvation. For YOY lake
trout to survive in Toolik Lake they most likely shift to feeding on benthic prey before the end of their first summer.

Summary The release of substance P-like immunoreactive material (SPLI) from the vascularly perfused stomach of the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, was studied. In most cases, SPLI was detected in the collected vascular perfusate during experimental resting conditions. Distensions of the stomach, accomplished by a water-filled intragastric balloon, produced an initial rapid relaxation of the stomach, followed by a slow further relaxation and a stimulation of contractile activity. The amount of SPLI in the vascular perfusate was significantly elevated during the distension period. Tetrodotoxin had no effect on the response to distension or on the release of SPLI during distension, indicating release from tetrodotoxin-insensitive neurons or endocrine cells. The results suggest that a substance P-like peptide may be involved in the contractile response and/or in the maintenance of muscular tone during gastric distensions in the rainbow trout. Infusion of capsaicin had no effect on the release of SPLI. However, capsaicin caused an increase in vascular flow, an effect that could be repeated on a second infusion of capsaicin, indicating that the action may not be specific to sensory neurons.Abbreviations 5-HT
