Selection pressure by natural enemies on phytophagous insect larvae is intense and has frequently triggered the evolution of chemical defence as an effective counterstrategy. In the chrysomelid subfamily Galerucinae, glandular structures and defensive fluids have been described for the tribe Sermylini Wilcox, 1965. Previous morphological and ultrastructural studies raised doubts that these defensive devices in Sermylini can be traced back to a common origin. The taxonomy of the Galerucinae cannot clear these doubts because the phylogeny of this taxon is a matter of current debate. We therefore investigated the phylogeny of the Galerucinae based on approximately 1740 bp of the mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA and the nuclear elongation factor 1 alpha genes. Our data support the hypothesized close relationship between the subfamilies Galerucinae and Alticinae, yet, by contrast to other recent analyses, the two groups are mostly resolved as monophyletic sister groups or, in some analyses, with the Galerucinae nested paraphyletically within the Alticinae. Within the subfamily Galerucinae, only the tribe Galerucini formed a monophyletic taxon, except for one species, Cerochroa brachialis Stal, 1858. In none of our analyses were the Sermylini recovered as a monophyletic tribe. However, our data support monophyly of each of the three groups within the Sermylini that have morphologically distinguishable larval defensive openings. We conclude that the defensive structures in larvae of Sermylini have no common origin, but evolved independently. Allelopathy can be defined as an important mechanism of plant interference mediated by the addition of plant-produced secondary products to the soil rhizosphere. Allelochemicals are present in all types of plants and tissues and are released into the soil rhizosphere by a variety of mechanisms, including decomposition of residues, volatilization, and root exudation. Allelochemical structures and modes of action are diverse and may offer potential for the development of future herbicides. We have focused our review on a variety of weed and crop species that establish some form of potent allelopathic interference, either with other crops or weeds, in agricultural settings, in the managed landscape, or in naturalized settings. Recent research suggests that allelopathic properties can render one species more invasive to native species and thus potentially detrimental to both agricultural and naturalized settings. In contrast, allelopathic crops offer strong potential for the development of cultivars that are more highly weed suppressive in managed settings. Both environmental and genotypic effects impact allelochemical production and release over time. A new challenge that exists for future plant scientists is to generate additional information on allelochemical mechanisms of release, selectivity and persistence, mode of action, and genetic regulation. Reproductive diapause is a strategy employed by some insects to coordinate reproduction with the appropriate environmental conditions for mate location and offspring development. Male Caloptilia fraxinella Ely (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) eclose in July in reproductive diapause, and remain unmated until May of the next year, when they emerge from overwintering sites in a reproductively active state. The present study assesses characteristics of male sex accessory glands (SAG) throughout the adult life stage when males are reproductively active and in early and late reproductive diapause. Male SAG are longer and positively correlate with moth body size when males are reproductively active in the spring compared with males in reproductive diapause in the summer and autumn. Male SAG also contain significantly more protein during the period of reproductive activity than during reproductive diapause. Access to a carbohydrate nutrition source does not impact male SAG length or protein concentration when males are reproductively active in the spring. Treatment with a Juvenile Hormone analogue in the autumn, but not the summer, tends to increase the total protein concentration compared with that of untreated control moths.  相似文献

Human eccrine sweat-gland recruitment and secretion rates were investigated from the glabrous (volar) and non-glabrous hand surfaces during psychogenic (mental arithmetic) and thermogenic stimuli (mild hyperthermia). It was hypothesised that these treatments would activate glands from both skin surfaces, with the non-thermal stimulus increasing secretion rates primarily by recruiting more sweat glands. Ten healthy men participated in two seated, resting trials in temperate conditions (25–26 °C). Trials commenced under normothermic conditions during which the first psychogenic stress was applied. That was followed by passive heating (0.5 °C mean body temperature elevation) and thermal clamping, with a second cognitive challenge then applied. Sudomotor activity was evaluated from both hands, with colourimetry used to identify activated sweat glands, skin conductance to determine the onset of precursor sweating and ventilated sweat capsules to measure rates of discharged sweating. From glandular activation and sweat rate data, sweat-gland outputs were derived. These psychogenic and thermogenic stimuli activated sweat glands from both the glabrous and non-glabrous skin surfaces, with the former dominating at the glabrous skin and the latter at the non-glabrous surface. Indeed, those stimuli individually accounted for ~90% of the site-specific maximal number of activated sweat glands observed when both stimuli were simultaneously applied. During the normothermic psychological stimulation, sweating from the glabrous surface was elevated via a 185% increase in the number of activated glands within the first 60 s. The hypothetical mechanism for this response may involve the serial activation of additional eccrine sweat glands during the progressive evolution of psychogenic sweating.  相似文献

The mandibular glands of workers of M. lobicornis produce a mixture of 3-alkanones and 3-alkanols in the C6–C10 carbon chain length range, in addition to nanogram amounts of acetone, ethanal and 2-methylpropanal. Ethological studies have shown that the three major constituents, 3-octanol, 3-octanone and 3-decanol, are also the major pheromonally active components. When presented together they stimulate an alarm response in the workers similar to that induced by a worker's crushed head.In M. sulcinodis the mandibular gland secretion is composed of a mixture of the same ketones and alcohols, but in different proportions.  相似文献

Workers of the related ants Tetramorium impurum and T. caespitum mark the vicinity of their nest entrances in a species-specific manner, as seen by similarities between the behavior of nestmates and that of alien conspecifics (e.g., concerning aggregation, locomotion, orientation, tendency to move, and agonistic behavior). Additionally, they mark the inside of their nest entrances in a colony-specific manner, as seen by the following differences in behavior. Nestmates aggregate on these areas, walk rather slowly, but freely and essentially in the middle of the areas, come toward and very near such areas, are not inclined to escape, and are ready to attack possible intruders. Alien conspecifics do not aggregate, walk quickly, and are reluctant to stay on the areas, come neither toward nor very near the areas, are inclined to escape, and often open their mandibles, mainly when in front of a resident. The marking of the nest entrances is performed by T. impurum in 30 min and by T. caespitum in 15 min. If not reinforced, the marking by both species vanishes in 60 and 50 min, respectively. Extracts of hindlegs, metathorax, or metapleural glands produce in unmarked areas the ethological effect of marked entrances. It may be hypothesized that the marking factor is produced by the workers' metapleural glands and deposited onto the ground, via the hindlegs of ants leaving the nest. A worker's head has a species- but not a colony-specific ethological effect. An isolated alien conspecific's head is never attacked, whereas a thorax with abdomen is. This explains why, by opening its mandibles (and then presumably emitting a mandibular gland pheromone), a conspecific ant momentarily inhibits the attack of a nonnestmate. According to Hölldobler and Wilson (1990), the marking of the inside of T. impurum and T. caespitum nest entrances is a territorial and nest-entrance marking, whereas the marking of the close vicinity of the entrances is a home-range marking, as is the marking of the foraging area. These markings are in accordance with the fact that T. impurum foragers deposit their trail pheromone as far as the opening of the nest entrance.  相似文献

Summary Ecdysteroid-like material was demonstrated by means of immunhistochemistry in the anterior body region of Lithobius forficatus with the use of an antiserum against an ecdysone-methoxim-BSA-conjugate in conjunction with a modified PAP-method (Sternberger and Joseph 1979). This material is restricted to a tissue formed by podocytes loosely surrounding the salivary glands. Earlier ultrastructural, experimental and biochemical in vitro investigations indicated that this tissue represents the ecdysial glands; this interpretation is now strengthened by immunohistochemical evidence. The biology and morphology of Chromadorina bioculata is presented. Tile nematode was abundant on the alga Cladophora of one lily pond, but absent from similar habitats in nearby ponds. The setae, caudal glands, high Iocomotory rates and positive photo response have been interpreted in relation to maintenance on, amongst and between algal filaments, suspended over large volumes of water.When placed in tap or distilled water, C. bioculata became inactive and died. The influence of pH buffers, tonicity, temperature and starvation on activity were investigated. C. bioculata survived longer in artificial sea water diluted 10 or 100 times with distilled water, or in NaCl isotonic with sea water diluted 100 or 1000 times, than in tap or distilled water. No evidence of wide osmotic toleration or osmoregulation was observed. Activity was influenced by temperature, with peak activities occurring at the seasonal normal temperature. These findings are discussed in terms of general hematology and habitat selection.  相似文献
