The focal-animal technique assumes the continuous recording of the behavior of an individual during a certain time interval. The length of this interval (sampling unit) can be problematic when estimating the duration of behavioral acts. Two acts from the behavioral repertoire of the ant Leptothorax fuenteiwere focused on in this work at different ranges of temporal scales. Analyzing these acts we show the possibility of existence of a sampling artifact, in such a way that the estimates of the durations of the acts would be forced to depend upon the length of the sampling unit that is being used. 相似文献

Summary Genes for the major storage protein of potato, patatin, have been mapped genetically and physically in both the potato and tomato genomes. In potato, all patatin genes detected by the cDNA clone pGM01 map to a single locus at the end of the long arm of chromosome 8. By means of pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) it was possible further to delimit this locus, containing 10–15 copies of the gene, to a maximum size of 1.4 million base pairs. Hybridizations with class-specific clones suggest that the locus is at least partially divided into domains containing the two major types of patatin genes, class I and II. In tomato, patatin-homologous sequences were found to reside at the orthologous locus at the end of chromosome 8. The approximately three copies in tomato were localized by PFGE to a single fragment of 300 kilobases. Whereas the class II-specific 5 promoter sequences reside in tomato at the same locus as the coding sequences, the single class I-specific copy of the 5 promoter sequences was localized on chromosome 3 with no coding sequence attached to it. A clone from this chromosome 3 locus of tomato was isolated and by restriction fragment length polymorphism mapping it could be further shown that a similar class I-specific sequence also exists on chromosome 3 of potato. As in tomato, this copy on chromosome 3 is not linked to a coding sequence for patatin. The results are discussed with respect to genome evolution and PFGE analysis of complex gene families. 相似文献

An experiment to study the effects of Mg nutrition on root and shoot development of the Al-sensitive sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) genotype CV323 grown in pots of sandy loam under different acid soil stress is reported. This experiment had
a factorial design: four rates of liming were combined with four rates of Mg fertilization. When no Mg was added, the pH of
the soil solutions (collected in ceramic cups) increased from 4.0 (unlimed) to 4.2, 4.7 and 5.9 at the increasing rates of
liming. After 30 days of growth dry matter yields of the limed treatments were 40%, 115% and 199% higher than that of the
unlimed treatment. Without liming and at the highest liming rate, adding Mg did not affect plant biomass significantly. At
the two intermediate levels of liming, however, 11.3 mg extra Mg per kg soil increased dry matter yield to the same levels
as found at the highest liming rate. Concentrations of Mg in the soil solution rose after Mg was added and fell when lime
was added, but adding both Mg and lime increased Mg concentrations in the plant shoots. In plants of the limed treatments,
dry matter yield was correlated closely with the Mg concentration in the shoot. This was not so in the unlimed treatment.
Furthermore, in the unlimed treatments root development was inhibited, but reduced Mg uptake by the plants resulted mainly
from the direct effect of Al- (or H-) ions in the soil solution rather than from impaired root development. It is concluded
that Mg fertilization counteracted the interfering effects of Al- and H ions on Mg uptake. 相似文献

Synopsis The phenology of Labeo dussumieri, an omnivorous carp common to South Asia, was investigated in a population inhabiting a flood plain anabranch of the Mahaweli Ganga, Sri Lanka. The Mahaweli Ganga exhibited a bimodal discharge pattern typical of many equatorial rivers, with a minor peak during the S.W. monsoon and a major peak during the N.E. monsoon. Seasonal changes in several lotic variables were measured in an attempt to correlate changes in environmental conditions to reproduction and growth in L. dussumieri. The onset of gonad recrudescence and spawning were synchronized with the increased river discharge during the S.W. and N.E. monsoons: gonad development followed one monsoonal discharge peak and spawning took place at the beginning of the other. Most fish spawned at the beginning of the major discharge peak in October and November, following the September dry season. Increased discharge was concomitant with a fall in temperature, light intensity, pH and conductivity. Growth was shown to be seasonal, exhibiting an annual bimodal pattern with peaks coincident with S.W. and N.E. monsoonal rains. Seasonal changes in growth were expressed by two models in terms of: (a) change of somatic weight or fork length with time, (b) change of specific growth rate in response to river discharge, modified by somatic weight. Polymorphism at the Hor 1 locus of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Hor 1 locus of barley encodes a group of seed storage polypeptides called C hordein. Two-dimensional electrophoretic analysis of C-hordein fractions from six cultivars with different alleles at the Hor 1 locus showed extensive polymorphism. A total of 34 major polypeptides was mapped, with between 4 and 18 present in each cultivar. There was less variation among the same cultivars in the numbers (6 to 10) of restriction fragments of genomic DNA which hybridized to a cDNA clone related to C hordein. The total number of restriction fragments was also lower (22), and most pairs of cultivars had more restriction fragments than polypeptides in common. A total number of about 20–30 C-hordein genes per haploid genome was estimated. The results indicate that cultivars differ mainly in the extent of gene and polypeptide divergence, rather than in the degree of gene reiteration. They are consistent with the proposed origin of the multiple structural genes at the Hor 1 locus by the duplication and divergence of a single ancestral gene.NACB was supported by a grant from the Home Grown Cereals Authority. 相似文献

Reproductive physiology was studied in female stumptail macaques. Initially the monkeys were housed indoors (individually
and in small groups) and later as one large (92 individuals) social group in an outdoor cage. Most data were collected during
the 4-year outdoor period. Plasma progesterone determination in blood samples taken at weekly intervals allowed estimation
of ovulation and conception dates. The age at first ovulation (X =3.73 years) was positively correlated with body weight at 3 years of age. The average age at first birth was 4.90 years. Gestation
lengths averaged 176.6 days. Following a live birth ovulations returned after a mean interval of 11 months but following an
abortion or still birth this interval was 1 month. Usually a number of ovulatory cycles (X =2.37) preceded a conception. Interbirth intervals (IBIs) in the outdoor cage (X =619.4 days) were significantly longer than IBIs during the indoor period (X =523.1), because indoors the infants were weaned at the age of 7 months, while outdoors weaning occurred more naturally. IBIs
following abortions or still births (X =291.9 days) were significantly shorter than IBIs following live births. Age at first ovulation, age at first birth, IBIs,
and infant production rates were not correlated with dominance rank. Ovarian cycle lengths (X =30.2 days, mode = 28 days) were comparable to previously reported data from laboratory-housed stumptails. No systematic seasonal
fluctuations were found in the onset of sexual maturity, in ovarian cycle lengths, in copulation frequencies, and in distribution

A mathematical model of cell population growth introduced by J. L. Lebowitz and S. I. Rubinow is analyzed. Individual cells are distinguished by age and cell cycle length. The cell cycle length is viewed as an inherited property determined at birth. The density of the population satisfies a first order linear partial differential equation with initial and boundary conditions. The boundary condition models the process of cell division of mother cells and the inheritance of cycle length by daughter cells. The mathematical analysis of the model employs the theory of operator semigroups and the spectral theory of linear operators. Summary The clone designated hMF #1 represents a clustered DNA family, located on chromosome 1, consisting of tandem arrays displaying a monomeric length of 40 bp and a repetition frequency of approximately 7×103 copies per haploid genome. The sequence hMF #1 reveals multiple restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) when human genomic DNA is digested with a variety of 4–6-bp recognition sequence restriction enzymes (i.e., Taq I, Eco RI, Pst I, etc.). When hamster and mouse genomic DNA was digested and analyzed, no cross-species homology could be observed. Further investigation revealed considerable hybridization in the higher primates (chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan) as well as some monkey species.The evolutionary relationship of this repetitive DNA sequence, found in humans, to that of other primates was explored using two hybridization methods: DNA dot blot to establish copy number and Southern DNA analysis to examine the complexity of the RFLPs. Homology to the hMF #1 sequence was found throughout the suborder Anthropoidea in 14 ape and New and Old World monkey species. However the sequence was absent in one species of the suborder Prosimii. Several discrepancies between established evolutionary relationships and those predicted by hMF #1 exist, which suggests that repetitive elements of this type are not reliable indicators of phylogenetic branching patterns. The phenomenon of marked diversity between sequence homologies and copy numbers of dispersed repetitive DNA of closely related species has been observed inDrosophila mice,Galago, and higher primates. We report here a similar phenomenon for a clustered repeat that may have originated at an early stage of primate evolution. 相似文献

Abstract. 1. The hypotheses that genetic variation in host plant resistance of the arroyo willow affected leaf folder ( Phyllocolpa sp.) (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae) density and that genetic variation in shoot length and leaf length was correlated with resistance were tested.
2. Willows grown in pots and exposed to ovipojsition by the leaf folding sawfly in cages had significantly different densities among clones, indicating variation in resistance caused by genetic differences among conspecific host plants.
3. There was a general correspondence between leaf folder density on potted cuttings and on the plants in the field that were the sources of cuttings.
4. In behavioural choice experiments, susceptible clones (with highest leaf fold densities) had the highest oviposition activity of female leaf folders compared to clones that were resistant to the leaf folder.
5. Clones differed significantly in shoot length and leaf length among clones grown in pots, among clones in the field, and between shoots with galls and shoots without galls on clones in the field.
6. Leaf folder density was significantly positively correlated with mean shoot length on field clones in 1985 and 1986, but was not correlated with leaf length, although leaf length and shoot length were correlated.
