Individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI) have compromised afferent and efferent information below the lesion. Intact afferent information regarding skin temperature and the ability to regulate skin blood flow lead to an altered heat balance, which may impact the circadian variation in core body temperature (Tcore) and sleep-wake cycle. The authors assessed the circadian variation of Tcore in SCI individuals and able-bodied controls matched for the timing of the sleep-wake cycle. The authors examined subjects who had a high (cervical) or a low (thoracic) lesion. Intestinal Tcore (telemetry system) and physical activity (ambulatory activity monitor) levels were measured continuously and simultaneously in 8 tetraplegics, 7 paraplegics, and 8 able-bodied controls during one 24-h period of “normal” living. The regression slope between activity and Tcore was also calculated for each 2-h bin. Circadian rhythm parameters were estimated with partial Fourier time-series analysis, and groups were compared with general linear models, adjusted for the influence of individual wake-time. The (mean?±?SD) dominant period length for controls, paraplegics, and tetraplegics were 24.4?±?5.4?h, 22.5?±?5.0?h, and 16.5?±?5.1?h, respectively (p?=?.02). A significantly more pronounced 8-h harmonic was found for the variation in Tcore of SCI individuals (p = .05). Tetraplegics showed the highest nocturnal mean Tcore (p = .005), a 5-h phase-advanced circadian trough time (p = .04), and more variable relationships between physical activity and Tcore (p = .03). Taken together, tetraplegics demonstrate a pronounced disturbance of the circadian variation of Tcore, whereas the variation of Tcore in paraplegics was comparable to able-bodied controls. No less than 52 species of barbets have been imported and kept in German zoos during the period between 1960 and 2000. In the first years some (world) first breeding records came from several zoos, Frankfurt with six world first records as the most successful one. Today only two species, the Bearded Barbet (Lybius dubius) and the Red-and-yellow Barbet (Trachyphonus erythrocephalus), breed regularly in ten respectively 14 German zoos and bird parks. The majority of the other species have been lost since, e.g. for future breeding projects. There are also some records of successful broods of barbets in private facilities, but the two species mentioned above are also on top of the list of the breeding records. The problems of keeping and breeding barbets in captivity, their life span, diseases and adequate housing conditions are compiled from data of the literature.  相似文献

School start time influences sleep parameters. Differences between circadian sleep parameters on weekends and weekdays have been associated with obesity, sleep, and psychiatric disorders. Moreover, circadian rhythm dysregulation affects the secretion of some hormones, such as melatonin and cortisol. In the current study, we investigate the effect of school start time on cortisol and melatonin levels in a community sample of Brazilian children and adolescents. This was a cross-sectional study of 454 students (mean age, 12.81 ± 2.56 years; 58.6% female). From this sample, 80 participants were randomly selected for saliva collection to measure melatonin and cortisol levels. Circadian sleep parameters were assessed by self-reported sleep and wake up schedules and the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire. The outcomes, salivary melatonin and cortisol levels, were measured in morning, afternoon and night saliva samples, and behavior problems were assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). The main results revealed that morning school start time decreased the secretion of melatonin. Morning melatonin levels were significantly positively correlated with the sleep midpoint on weekdays and on weekends. Afternoon melatonin levels were positively correlated with the sleep midpoint on weekends in the morning school students. Conversely, in the afternoon school students, night melatonin levels were negatively correlated with the sleep midpoint on weekdays. Cortisol secretion did not correlate with circadian sleep parameters in any of the school time groups. In conclusion, school start time influences melatonin secretion, which correlated with circadian sleep parameters. This correlation depends on the presence of psychiatric symptoms. Our findings emphasize the importance of drawing attention to the influence of school start time on the circadian rhythm of children and adolescents.  相似文献

本文作者根据秦岭保护区群内7个自然保护区(保护站)存在的主要问题,提出了解决问题的办法。主要问题:一、牛背梁自然保护区的形状、大小、边界区划不合理;二、各自然保护区由于投资和建立时间不同,发展不平衡。三、周边地区商业采伐严重;四、农业蚕食,非法利用自然资源现象得不到制止;五、交通道路穿越保护区,影响动物基因交流;六、旅游开发缺乏统一管理。采取的对策主要是:一、在主要动物活动地带建立联合管理区和生物走廊带;二、加强对老县城自然保护区的管理和投资;三、加强对穿越保护区公路沿线的管理;四、解决对资源的过度利用,开展社区共管工作;五、对旅游实行规范化管理;六、开展多种经营创收。  相似文献

Background

Although delayed sleep timing causes many socio-psycho-biological problems such as sleep loss, excessive daytime sleepiness, obesity, and impaired daytime neurocognitive performance in adults, there are insufficient data showing the clinical significance of a ‘night owl lifestyle’ in early life. This study examined the association between habitual delayed bedtime and sleep-related problems among community-dwelling 2-year-old children in Japan.

Methods

Parents/caregivers of 708 community-dwelling 2-year-old children in Nishitokyo City, Tokyo, participated in the study. The participants answered a questionnaire to evaluate their child’s sleep habits and sleep-related problems for the past 1 month.

Results

Of the 425 children for whom complete data were collected, 90 (21.2%) went to bed at 22:00 or later. Children with delayed bedtime showed significantly more irregular bedtime, delayed wake time, shorter total sleep time, and difficulty in initiating and terminating sleep. Although this relationship indicated the presence of sleep debt in children with delayed bedtime, sleep onset latency did not differ between children with earlier bedtime and those with delayed bedtime. Rather, delayed bedtime was significantly associated with bedtime resistance and problems in the morning even when adjusting for nighttime and daytime sleep time.

Conclusions

Even in 2-year-old children, delayed bedtime was associated with various sleep-related problems. The causal factors may include diminished homeostatic sleep drive due to prolonged daytime nap as well as diurnal preference (morning or night type) regulated by the biological clock.  相似文献

The thymus provides a stable microenvironment for post-natal thymocyte development that is finely regulated by a complicated network of cytokines, chemokines, cell-cell contacts, etc., the dysregulations of which contribute to many immunologic diseases including malignant lymphomas. A physiologically structured model in the form of first order partial differential equation (PDE) was developed to simulate the whole process. The combined effects of the thymic microenvironment were conceptualized into two (proliferation and differentiation) fields to serve as kernels of the PDE. In this paper, a novel method is developed to estimate the maturity-time structures of the two fields based solely on cell population data that are experimentally viable. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the present method in revealing the two-dimensional (maturity and time) landscapes of the thymic microenvironment.   相似文献

We consider distributed parameter identification problems for the FitzHugh–Nagumo model of electrocardiology. The model describes the evolution of electrical potentials in heart tissues. The mathematical problem is to reconstruct physical parameters of the system through partial knowledge of its solutions on the boundary of the domain. We present a parallel algorithm of Newton–Krylov type that combines Newton’s method for numerical optimization with Krylov subspace solvers for the resulting Karush–Kuhn–Tucker system. We show by numerical simulations that parameter reconstruction can be performed from measurements taken on the boundary of the domain only. An episode of hyperthermia is not uncommon during pregnancy. The consequences depend on the extent of temperature elevation, its duration, and the stage of development when it occurs. Mild exposures during the preimplantation period and more severe exposures during embryonic and fetal development often result in prenatal death and abortion. Hyperthermia also causes a wide range of structural and functional defects. The central nervous system (CNS) is most at risk probably because it cannot compensate for the loss of prospective neurons by additional divisions by the surviving neuroblasts and it remains at risk at stages throughout pre- and postnatal life. In experimental animals the most common defects are of the neural tube, microphthalmia, cataract, and micrencephaly, with associated functional and behavioral problems. Defects of craniofacial development including clefts, the axial and appendicular skeleton, the body wall, teeth, and heart are also commonly found. Nearly all these defects have been found in human epidemiological studies following maternal fever or hyperthermia during pregnancy. Suggested future human studies include problems of CNS function after exposure to influenza and fever, including mental retardation, schizophrenia, autism, and cerebral palsy.  相似文献
