During the process of evolution, a selective advantage may have been gained by organisms that had the ability to utilize mentally stored information of a stimulus rather than the stimulus itself. The ability to temporarily store and mentally operate on stimulus information is often termed “working memory.” Within the neocortex of primates, the functional anatomic subdivision surrounding the principal (rectus) sulcus plays an important role in modulating the performance of delay-response tasks in monkeys (representing working memory). However, it appears that no study has investigated the direct relationship between the length of the principal sulcus and performance on a delay-response task. Therefore, this paper investigates the relationships between principal sulcus length and performance on delay-response tasks. However, to control for the effect of overall brain size on this relationship, cranial capacity is analyzed with both principal sulcus length and delay-response performance. Results support a consistent and significant correlation between principal sulcus length and performance on delayed-response tasks in a variety of Old World and New World monkeys. Principal sulcus length is also significantly correlated with cranial capacity; however, cranial capacity is not significantly correlated with performance on delayed-response tasks. The results of this investigation provide a method for analyzing cranial capacity and working-memory abilities in select primates based on principal sulcus length, and may prove useful for interpreting endocasts in the primate fossil record. In this study, a one-way random effect model with unequal cell variances is considered, and the Minimum Variance Quadratic Unbiased Estimator (MIVQUE) and Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) estimator of the variance components are studied. The algebraic inversion of the variance matrix of the observation vector is obtained to achieve some computational convenience. Using the proportionality condition described by Talukder (1992) that the cell sizes are proportional to the cell variances, MIVQUE and REML estimators are shown to be the same as the ANOVA estimators.  相似文献

Databases of multiple sequence alignments are a valuable aid to protein sequence classification and analysis. One of the main challenges when constructing such a database is to simultaneously satisfy the conflicting demands of completeness on the one hand and quality of alignment and domain definitions on the other. The latter properties are best dealt with by manual approaches, whereas completeness in practice is only amenable to automatic methods. Herein we present a database based on hidden Markov model profiles (HMMs), which combines high quality and completeness. Our database, Pfam, consists of parts A and B. Pfam-A is curated and contains well-characterized protein domain families with high quality alignments, which are maintained by using manually checked seed alignments and HMMs to find and align all members. Pfam-B contains sequence families that were generated automatically by applying the Domainer algorithm to cluster and align the remaining protein sequences after removal of Pfam-A domains. By using Pfam, a large number of previously unannotated proteins from the Caenorhabditis elegans genome project were classified. We have also identified many novel family memberships in known proteins, including new kazal, Fibronectin type III, and response regulator receiver domains. Pfam-A families have permanent accession numbers and form a library of HMMs available for searching and automatic annotation of new protein sequences. A model system consisting of cynomolgus macaque sperm and ovulated hamster ova-cumulus complexes (OCCs) was utilized to study the role of the sperm protein PH-20 in cumulus penetration. The hyaluronidase activity of solubilized macaque sperm PH-20 was evaluated using an ELISA-like microplate assay prior to and following the addition of the hyaluronidase inhibitors heparin (0–100 μg/ml) and apigenin (250 μM), as well as the Ig fraction of a polyclonal antibody raised against purified recombinant macaque PH-20 (R10; 10–400 μg/ml). Sperm motility following exposure to enzyme inhibitors was evaluated using computer-aided sperm motility analysis. Macaque sperm were labeled with the permeant fluorescent nuclear dye, Hoechst 33342, and were coincubated with ovulated hamster OCCs for 30 min at 37°C. The addition of heparin, apigenin, or R10 antibody to solubilized sperm extracts resulted in a linear dose-dependent decrease in hyaluronidase activity (P < .01). In the heterologous cumulus penetration assay, fluorescently labeled macaque sperm that were pretreated with heparin (1–100 μg/ml), apigenin (250 μM), or R10 antibody (Ig fraction, 10–400 μg/ml) demonstrated a dose-dependent decrease in the ability to penetrate hamster OCCs (P < 0.01), in the absence of effects on sperm motility. In the homologous assay, experiments using macaque OCCs and fluorescently labeled macaque sperm confirmed that the same concentrations of heparin and R10 antibody similarly suppressed spermatozoal cumulus penetration (P < .01). These results suggest that macaque sperm PH-20-derived hyaluronidase participates in cumulus penetration in this species, and that this model system is useful for further studies into primate gamete interaction. An incident reporting system (IRS) prevents possible adverse events by collecting and analyzing incidents that occur. However, few studies are available regarding IRSs in the laboratory animal field. This study aimed to develop an incident severity classification for laboratory animals (ISCLA) to evaluate the usefulness of the IRS in laboratory animal facilities. Twenty-three incidents reported from March 2019 to February 2020 on our IRS were retrospectively reviewed. Three of the 23 incidents failed to obtain some experimental data. Two of these incidents were harmless to animals, but the other caused the animals moderate distress. In addition, two of the three incidents made animals unsuitable for experiments. Since the inconsistent impact of incidents on animals and experiments prevented the comparison of the severity of individual incidents, we developed the ISCLA. According to the ISCLA, the above three incidents were classified into Category 3b and 4a. The others were classified into Category 0 (n=5), 1 (n=6), 2 (n=3), and 3a (n=6) in ascending order of severity. No incident was classified into Category 4b and 5. Furthermore, incidents occurring in the animal housing area were more severe than those occurring in the supporting area (P=0.002). This study showed that incident occurrences had characteristics that were not visible from individual incidents alone. Moreover, the ISCLA was considered useful when conducting the IRS and taking improvement measures in laboratory animal facilities.  相似文献

Primate social groups frequently contain multiple males. Male group size has been hypothesized to result from male mating competition, but the selective factors responsible for the evolution of multimale groups are unclear. Short breeding seasons create situations that are not conducive for single males to monopolize mating access to females, and may therefore favor the formation of large male groups. Alternatively, since the costs of mate defense increase with the spatial clumping of females, female group size may be a primary determinant of the number of males in a primate group. We used comparative methods designed to control for the potentially confounding effects of hidden third variables associated with phylogeny to test the breeding season and female group size hypotheses for the evolution of multimale groups. Our results revealed no association between breeding season duration and the number of males in groups. In contrast, we provide support for the female group size hypothesis by demonstrating a strong pattern of correlated evolution between female and male group size. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

对暖温带山地针叶林采用无倾向对应分析(DCA)和二元指示种分析(TWINSPAN)进行排序和数量分类。二种方法的分析结果相似。根据暖温带森林地区120个气象站数据,得出多元回归方程,并根据每个样地所在地的经度、纬度和海拔高度,获得各类植物群落气候因子的信息。低山侧柏(Platycladus orientalis)林和油松(Pinus tabulaeformis)林是喜暖耐旱的植物群落。实质上油松林分布很广,亦能耐寒,并可与多种乔木形成混交林。华山松(pinus armandii)林需要温暖湿润的生境,多见于纬度较低的中山地带。亚高山带主要是华北落叶松(Larix princiois-rupprechtii),白扦(Picea meyeri)青扦(Picea wilsonii)占优势的针叶林,它们有纯林,亦有混交林,对上述植物群落给以环境解释,  相似文献

植物群落学研究的任务之一是关于群落的环境解释。植被-气候的相关定量分析是其中主要的一环。可能蒸散(PE)作为综合热量与水分两个最重要的生态因子的参数与联系植物及其环境的数量指标而引起了植物生态学家、地理学家与气候学家的重视。本文分篇介绍几种最重要与较成功的PE计算方法及植被—气候分类,并提供其微机计算与分类程序(PEP)以便使用,并期望促进这方面的研究。介绍的方法有:Penman,Thornthwaite,Holdridge与Kira(吉良竜夫)的公式或计算法。  相似文献
