Dipteran predators of Simuliid blackflies: a worldwide review   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Haematophagous female blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are serious biting pests and obligate vectors of vertebrate pathogens, namely filarial Dirofilaria, Mansonella, Onchocerca and protozoal Leucocytozoon. Immature stages of Simuliidae inhabit lotic waterways, the sessile larvae filter-feeding and often forming a large proportion of the benthic biomass, usually aggregated in well-oxygenated sections of streams, rivers, waterfalls and spillways. Simuliid control practices depend on larvicidal chemicals, biological products (bacteria, nematodes) and environmental modification. The potential use of predators for biological control of Simuliidae has not been exploited. Predators of Simuliidae include examples of at least 12 families of Diptera and other predaceous arthropods (Crustacea and insects: Coleoptera, Odonata, Plecoptera, Trichoptera), invertebrates (notably Turbellaria), as well as browsing fish. Diptera impacting upon simuliid populations comprise mainly Chironomidae, Empididae and Muscidae, although several other families (Asilidae, Dolichopodidae, Phoridae, Drosophilidae, Scathophagidae) play a significant role as predators. Details of predator and prey species and life stages are presented, by zoogeographical region, including the prevalence of cannibalism among Simuliidae.  相似文献

On Mount Komas volcanically devastated summit six common plant species colonized 12 microsite types differentially. Flat sites covered 65%, rills and gullies 16% and biotic sites 13% of the study area. Most species preferred sites near rocks and avoided flat and biotic microsites. Polygonum and Salix preferred gully bottoms and edges. Polygonum and Salix seedlings avoided flat areas and Polygonum seedlings strongly colonized gullies. Carex oxyandra seedlings preferred Salix patches. The distributions of seedlings and adult plants were correlated. Biotic microsites supported the largest Carex individuals, rills supported the largest Agrostis individuals and the largest Salix individuals were in gully bottoms and flats.  相似文献

Mitochondrial membrane potentials (MMP) reflect the functional status of mitochondria within cells. Our recently published method provides a semiquantitative estimate of the MMP of populations of mitochondrial-like particles within living cells at 37 degrees C using a combination of conventional fluorescence microscopy and three-dimensional deconvolution by exhaustive photon reassignment. The current studies demonstrate variations in the mean MMP among six different cell types (i.e., human skin fibroblasts, naive and differentiated PC12 cells, SH-SY5Y cells, dopaminergic cells, and primary cultured neurons) and MMP in different parts of the same cells (i.e., growth cones vs. cell bodies). The largest MMP was in nontransformed fibroblasts (mean MMP was -112 +/- 2 mV), while the lowest was in transformed neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells (-87 +/- 2 mV). This method revealed large variations in mean MMP among cells of the same type within a single culture dish. The percent area of the cell occupied by mitochondrial-like particles differed among different cell types, and ranged from 4% in SH-SY5Y to 24% in differentiated PC12 cells. The data can also be analyzed by calculating the sum potential of all of the pixels in a cell. The sum MMP per cell revealed a large range between cell types from -2238 +/- 355 mV/microm2 in SH-Y5Y to -15445 +/- 1039 mV/microm2 in PC12 cells. Although biological implications of heterogeneity of MMP are not clear, this approach provides a tool to address this question.  相似文献

Naegleria fowleri, a free-living amoeba, is the causative agent of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, a fatal human disease of the central nervous system often contracted after swimming in fresh water. Identifying sites contaminated by N. fowleri is important in order to prevent the disease. An Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA) has been developed for the specific identification of N. fawleri in primary cultures of environmental water samples. Of 939 samples isolated from artificially heated river water and screened by ELISA, 283 were positive. These results were subsequently confirmed by isoelectric focusing, the established reference method. A sensitivity of 97.4% and a specificity of 97% were obtained. These results indicate that this ELISA method is reliable and can be considered as a powerful tool for the detection of N. fowleri in environmental water samples.  相似文献

Biomass, net primary productivity, energetics and energy efficiencies were estimated in an age series of Alnus-cardamom plantations in the eastern Himalaya. The impact of stand age (5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 years) on the performance of mixtures of N2-fixing (Alnus nepalensis) and non-N2-fixing (large cardamom) plants was studied. Large cardamom (Amomum subulatum) is the most important perennial cash crop in the region and is cultivated predominantly under Alnus trees. Net primary productivity was lowest (7 t ha(-1) per year) in the 40-year-old stand and was more than three times higher (22 t ha(-1) per year) in the 15-year-old stand. Agronomic yield of large cardamom peaked between 15 and 20 years of age. Cardamom productivity doubled from the 5- to the 15-year-old stand, and then decreased with plantation age to reach a minimum in the 40-year-old stand. Performance of cardamom in association of N2-fixing Alnus remained beneficial until 20 years of age. Annual net energy fixation was highest (444 x 10(6) kJ ha(-1) per year) in the 15-year-old stand, being 1.4 times that of the 5-year-old stand and 2.9-times that of the 40-year-old stand. Inverse relationships of production efficiency, energy conversion efficiency and energy utilized in N2-fixation against stand age, and a positive relationship between production efficiency and energy conversion efficiency suggest that the younger plantations are more productive. The Alnus-cardamom plantation system will be sustainable by adopting a rotational cycle of 15 to 20 years.  相似文献

Iris haynei and I. atrofusca are two closely related narrow endemics distributed vicariously along an ecogeographical north-south gradient in Israel and the West Bank. To obtain baseline information of the taxonomic status, conservation and population history of these taxa, we investigated patterns of phenotypic variation and the partitioning of genetic variation within and among populations using dominant random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Multivariate (principal components analysis) and taxonomic distance analyses based on morphometric traits from eight populations revealed no unambiguous separation into two distinct groups. Results of genetic analyses for nine populations differed only slightly when either allele- or marker-based approaches were employed. Mean within-population diversity was high (0.258 for Nei's expected heterozygosity), but there was no significant relationship between genetic diversity and either population size or latitude. Although the range-wide estimate of GST ( approximately 0.20) revealed relatively high differentiation among populations this value was inflated because of a small, but significant, component of molecular variance among regions viz. taxa ( approximately 5%). Limited long-distance dispersal capabilities in conjunction with a linearized habitat distribution are proposed to contribute to the approximate isolation by distance pattern observed. It also appears that extant populations are currently deviating from equilibrium conditions because of primary divergence of a formerly more widespread ancestral population. Given the absence of deep genetic and phenotypic subdivision among northern (I. haynei) vs. central/southern (I. atrofusca) populations, we argue for a revision of their species status. Nonetheless, we recommend conservation attention to these geographically differentiated segments as separate management units, which can be seen as an instructive example of incipient species formation.  相似文献

Fingerprints of excitation spectra of chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence can be used to differentiate `spectral groups' of microalgae in vivo and in situ in, for example, vertical profiles within a few seconds. The investigated spectral groups of algae (green group, Chlorophyta; blue, Cyanobacteria; brown, Heterokontophyta, Haptophyta, Dinophyta; mixed, Cryptophyta) are each characterised by a specific composition of photosynthetic antenna pigments and, consequently, by a specific excitation spectrum of the Chl fluorescence. Particularly relevant are Chl a, Chl c, phycocyanobilin, phycoerythrobilin, fucoxanthin and peridinin. A laboratory-based instrument and a submersible instrument were constructed containing light-emitting diodes to excite Chl fluorescence in five distinct wavelength ranges. Norm spectra were determined for the four spectral algal groups (several species per group). Using these norm spectra and the actual five-point excitation spectrum of a water sample, a separate estimate of the respective Chl concentration is rapidly obtained for each algal group. The results of dilution experiments are presented. In vivo and in situ measurements are compared with results obtained by HPLC analysis. Depth profiles of the distribution of spectral algal groups taken over a time period of few seconds are shown. The method for algae differentiation described here opens up new research areas, monitoring and supervision tasks related to photosynthetic primary production in aquatic environments. Water column dynamics of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the main creek of the Bangrong mangrove forest, Phuket Island, Thailand, were examined during the dry season. Water sampled from the upper and lower reaches of the creek throughout entire neap and spring tide periods was incubated under saturated irradiation and in the dark. The activity of microbial primary producers and heterotrophs were evaluated from changes in O2, TCO2, DOC, DIN, DON and PO4 3- concentrations. Gross primary production was moderate (1.6–2.4 M C h–1) with no pronounced spatial and temporal variations. A large fraction of the assimilated inorganic carbon and nitrogen was released in the form of DOC (50–90%) and DON (50–60%) indicating that primary producers were under stress or nutrient depleted. PO4 3- and occasionally DIN appeared to be the limiting nutrients. The pelagic heterotrophic community was supported by DOC (50–100%) and DON (40–90%) excreted by primary producers when exposed to light. However, rapid light attenuation in the turbid creek water rendered the entire water column strongly heterotrophic at all times (1.1–2.8 M C h–1). The microbial heterotrophs are therefore largely supported by particulate and dissolved substrates derived from tidal resuspension, mangrove root exudates and leachates from fallen leaves on the forest floor. The relatively high concentrations of metabolites (e.g. CO2, NH4 +) in creek water were primarily supplied by microbial mineralization. Water seeping from creek banks, which was only enriched in TCO2 (2 times) and PO4 3- (20–100 times) compared with creek water, is not considered an important source of solutes in the waterways of the Bangrong mangrove forest. Although the results obtained here are only strictly representative for the dry season, water column processes in the wet season are not expected to differ much due to the limited seasonal variations with respect to physical, chemical and biological parameters in the Bangrong area.  相似文献

  • 1 The carrot psyllid Trioza apicalis and Lygus rugulipennis can cause serious damage to cultivated carrots, especially at the seedling stage. The essential oil composition in leaves of several carrot varieties was studied in relation to oviposition acceptance by sucking insect herbivores that have different feeding strategies. Of the insect species studied, T. apicalis is a carrot specialist, T. anthrisci is an Apiaceae specialist, and L. rugulipennis is a generalist.
  • 2 The oil composition differed significantly between leaves from different carrot varieties (Flakkeer 2, Nantura, Parano, Napoli, Panther, Splendid, Nantes 3 Express).
  • 3 There were no differences in the mean numbers of eggs laid by T. apicalis or T. anthrisci on different varieties, but L. rugulipennis laid fewer eggs on the Panther variety than on Nantes 3 Express.
  • 4 There was a negative linear correlation between limonene concentration and number of eggs laid by T. apicalis, confirming that limonene is a repellent to the carrot psyllid. Results suggest that only particular compounds influence the preference of the carrot psyllid, and these compounds may not be the main components in the essential oil of carrots.
  • 5 A positive correlation was found between myrcene concentration and number of eggs laid by T. anthrisci. Essential oil composition did not explain egg‐laying preference of L. rugulipennis.
  • 6 The results indicate that essential oil composition of carrot varieties affects host preference of Apiaceae specialists more than that of generalists.
