Arthropod prey are expected to be more vulnerable to their predators immediately following molt. The effects of springtail (Isotoma carpenteri) postmolt vulnerability on interactions with a pseudoscorpion predator were examined in the laboratory. Springtails exposed to vials pretreated with pseudoscorpions (Apochthonius minimus) delayed molting compared to those prey that were exposed to vials pretreated only with springtails. Although their escape ability (measured as distance jumped) was unaffected by molt condition, postmolt springtails were more profitable in terms of reduced predator handling time following capture. Despite this,A. minimus did not distinguish between postmolt and intermolt prey presented at either end of a T-maze.  相似文献

We designed an Integrated Media Preparation System (IMPS) for continuous, on-line preparation of cell culture media and delivery to intermediate storage vessels or directly to a bioreactor. Key components of the IMPS include: a high precision, continuous fluid mixing device; formulation-specific liquid medium concentrates; validated process controls and membrane filtration; and automated dispensing into large volume flexible plastic containers. The IMPS system is designed to produce sterile, single-strength liquid medium from common raw materials at a delivery rate of 1000–3000 liters per hour and will manufacture homogenous batches from several thousand liters to over 60,000 liters. Fortified nutrient media prepared from multi-component 50X concentrates have been demonstrated to accelerate bioreactor seed chains, increase product yield, and reduce the overall manufacturing cost of nutrient medium. 1. To reduce the risk of being eaten by predators, prey alter their morphology or behaviour. This response can be tuned to the current danger if chemical or other cues associated with predators inform the prey about the risks involved. 2. It is well known that various prey species discriminate between chemical cues from predators that fed on conspecific prey and those that fed on heterospecific prey, and react stronger to the first. It is therefore expected that generalist predators are more successful in capturing a given prey species when they are contaminated with chemical cues from another prey species instead of cues from the same prey species. 3. Here, a generalist predatory mite was studied that feeds on thrips larvae as well as on whitefly eggs and crawlers. Mites were marked with cues (i.e. body fluids) of one of these two prey species and were subsequently offered thrips larva. 4. Predators marked with thrips cues killed significantly fewer thrips than predators marked with whitefly cues, even though the predator's tendency to attack was the same. In addition, more thrips larvae sought refuge in the presence of a predatory mite marked with thrips cues instead of whitefly cues. 5. This suggests that generalist predators may experience improved attack success when switching prey species.  相似文献

We analyzed the functional morphology and evolution of the long jaws found in several butterflyfishes. We used a conservative reanalysis of an existing morphological dataset to generate a phylogeny that guided our selection of seven short- and long-jawed taxa in which to investigate the functional anatomy of the head and jaws: Chaetodon xanthurus, Prognathodes falcifer (formerly Chaetodon falcifer), Chelmon rostratus, Heniochus acuminatus, Johnrandallia nigrirostris, Forcipiger flavissimus, and F. longirostris. We used manipulations of fresh, preserved, and cleared and stained specimens to develop mechanical diagrams of how the jaws might be protruded or depressed. Species differed based on the number of joints within the suspensorium. We used high-speed video analysis of five of the seven species (C. xanthurus, Chel. rostratus, H. acuminatus, F. flavissimus, and F. longirostris) to test our predictions based on the mechanical diagrams: two suspensorial joints should facilitate purely anteriorly directed protrusion of the lower jaw, one joint should allow less anterior protrusion and result in more depression of the lower jaw, and no joints in the suspensorium should constrain the lower jaw to simple ventral rotation around the jaw joint, as seen in generalized perciform fishes. We found that the longest-jawed species, F. longirostris, was able to protrude its jaws in a predominantly anterior direction and further than any other species. This was achieved with little input from cranial elevation, the principal input for other known lower jaw protruders, and is hypothesized to be facilitated by separate modifications to the sternohyoideus mechanism and to the adductor arcus palatini muscle. In F. longirostris the adductor arcus palatini muscle has fibers oriented anteroposteriorly rather than medial-laterally, as seen in most other perciforms and in the other butterflyfish studied. These fibers are oriented such that they could rotate the ventral portion of the quadrate anteriorly, thus projecting the lower jaw anteriorly. The intermediate species lack modification of the adductor arcus palatini and do not protrude their jaws as far (in the case of F. flavissimus) or in a purely anterior fashion (in the case of Chel. rostratus). The short-jawed species both exhibit only ventral rotation of the lower jaw, despite the fact that H. acuminatus is closely related to Forcipiger.  相似文献

Ambient levels of ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB) have a variety of detrimental effects on aquatic organisms. These include death and effects on growth, development, physiology, and behavior. Amphibians show all of these effects. However, the effects vary with species, life history stage, and ecological context. Little is known about the implications of the detrimental effects of UVB on ecological dynamics. Our study was designed to test how UVB may affect predator–prey interactions, an important ecological dynamic. Specifically, we tested the effect of UVB on the susceptibility of Cascades frog (Rana cascadae) larvae to predation by rough-skinned newts (Taricha granulosa). We also further examined the sublethal effects of UVB on growth and development in Cascades frog larvae. We found no direct effect of UVB exposure on survival. However, UVB-exposed frog larvae displayed decreased growth and increased prevalence of deformities. UVB also caused increased susceptibility to predation, but there was a significant treatment–block interaction. UVB increased susceptibility to predation in two out of five blocks of Cascades frogs. The other three blocks did not show an effect of UVB on susceptibility to predation. Our study suggests that UVB can alter susceptibility to predation in at least one amphibian species. UVB-induced alteration of predator–prey interactions could potentially lead to changes at the population, community, and ecosystem levels. Handling editor: K. Martens  相似文献

Our aim was to test the effects of prey frequency and background composition on selection by free-ranging birds. We did three series of experiments with populations of grey and orange pastry prey scattered among coloured stones that made the prey either conspicuous or inconspicuous. Series 1 tested whether the predicted equilibrium frequency of the two prey types was influenced by the frequency of matching grey and orange stones. Birds at a single site were given a random sequence of combinations of prey frequency and stone frequency. Selection was dependent on background and the effect of prey frequency also varied with background. In series 2, we explored the frequency-independent effect of background: birds at five sites were given equal numbers of the two prey in three frequencies of matching stones and two of non-matching. There was a higher risk of predation for prey that matched rarer stones. In series 3 we attempted to measure, at a single site, the actual equilibrium prey frequencies in three different backgrounds: two extreme stone frequencies and one intermediate. Each experiment started with a population of equal numbers of grey and orange prey. After half the prey had been eaten we calculated the frequencies of the survivors and presented a new population of the original size but with the new prey frequencies; each experiment ran for 25 such 'generations'. The results suggested that at equilibrium the commoner 'morph' was the one that resembled the commoner colour of stone. Overall, our findings support the idea that visual selection can result in morph frequencies becoming related to the proportions of their matching background components and that this equilibrium will 'track' temporal or spatial changes in the background.  相似文献

The genus Hypnomys Bate, 1918 includes some endemic Neogene chronospecies from Mallorca and Menorca, evolved in insularity conditions from the Lower Pliocene to the human arrival at the archipelago. The study of the allometric proportions (functional length and sagittal diameter) of the limbs’ long bones of Hypnomys eliomyoides Agusti, 1980 (Lower Pleistocene of Menorca), Hypnomys sp. (Pleistocene of Menorca), Hypnomys onicensis (Reumer, 1994) (Upper Pliocene-Lower Pleistocene of Mallorca) and Hypnomys morpheus Bate, 1918 (Upper Pleistocene of Mallorca) only indicates small differences with the garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus Linnaeus, 1776) and other mainland rodents and insectivores. The study about the locomotion type by means of Similarity Matrix of Bou indicates that 1) Hypnomys spp. presents the greater similarities with the arboreal, jumping and gliding species; 2) the jumping and digging life style of Hypnomys spp. are more developed (25%) than in E. quercinus; 3) the walking locomotion of Hypnomys spp. is only a 7% greater than in E. quercinus; and 4) the degree of similarity with the gliding locomotion of Hypnomys sp. is greater (17%) than in E. quercinus. Some of this data indicates that Hypnomys spp. was better adapted to the arboreal life than E. quercinus, due to the relationship between the jumping and gliding capacities with the arboreal locomotion. The greater similarity of Hypnomys spp. with the walking locomotion does not necessarily involve more terrestrial habits. Our interpretation contrasts with earlier conclusions of Hypnomys life style (Hypnomys cf. onicensis and Hypnomys morpheus) where the terrestrial locomotion was overestimated in front of the arboreal locomotion. The locomotion type of Hypnomys would be related with the presence of important forest masses on the Balearic Islands during the Neogene, a different degree of environmental stress from that of the mainland ecosystems and a probable expansion of the ecological niche occupied by these species.  相似文献

The effects of physical manipulation of hydroponically grown plants of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L., cvs Subito and Glares) on nitrate uptake fluxes were studied in a long-term experiment (3 days), and in short-term label experiments (2 h) with 13N-nitrate and 15N-nitrate. In the long-term experiment, net nitrate uptake rate (NNUR) was measured by following the nitrate depletion in the uptake solution, which was replaced at regular intervals. In the short-term experiments, NNUR and nitrate influx were measured by simultaneous application of 13N-nitrate and 15N-nitrate. Plants were gently transferred into the labelled uptake solution, as is usually done in nutrient uptake studies. In addition, a more severe physical manipulation was carried out, including blotting of the roots, to mimic pretreatments which involve more handling of the plants prior to uptake measurements. Nitrate influx was measured immediately after physical manipulation and after 2 h of recovery. To assess the impact of the physical manipulation the experimentally determined nitrate uptake fluxes were compared with the N demand for growth, defined as relative growth rate (RGR) times plant nitrogen concentration (PNC) of parallel plants, which were left undisturbed. Nitrate influx and efflux were both subject to changes after physical manipulation of the plants. Physical handling, however, did not always result in an alteration of NNUR, which complicates the determination of the length of the recovery period. The impact of the handling and the time course of the recovery depended on the severity of the disturbance and were independent of the light conditions during the experiments. Even after a gentle transfer of the plants, recovery, in most cases, was not complete within 2 h. The data emphasise the need for minimal disturbance of plants during the last hours prior to nutrient uptake measurements.  相似文献
