Aim Recent works have found the presence of native congeners to have a small effect on the naturalization rates of introduced plants, some suggesting a negative interaction (as proposed by Charles Darwin in The Origin of Species), and others a positive association. We assessed this question for a new biogeographic region, and discuss some of the problems associated with data base analyses of this type. Location Islands of the Mediterranean basin. Methods Presence or absence of congeners was assessed for all naturalized alien plants species at regional, local and habitat scales. Using general linear models, we attempted to explain the abundance of the species (as measured by the number of islands where recorded) from their congeneric status, and assessed whether the patterns could be alternatively accounted for by a range of biological, geographical and anthropogenic factors. A simulation model was also used to investigate the impact of a simple bias on a comparable but hypothetical data set. Results Data base analyses addressing Darwin's hypothesis are prone to bias from a number of sources. Interaction between invaders and congenerics may be overestimated, as they often do not co‐occur in the same habitats. Furthermore, intercorrelations between naturalization success and associated factors such as introduction frequency, which are also not independent from relatedness with the native flora, may generate an apparent influence of congenerics without implying a biological interaction. We detected no true influence from related natives on the successful establishment of alien species of the Mediterranean. Rarely‐introduced species tended to fare better in the presence of congeners, but it appears that this effect was generated because species introduced accidentally into highly invasible agricultural and ruderal habitats have many relatives in the region, due to common evolutionary origins. Main conclusions Relatedness to the native flora has no more than a marginal influence on the invasion success of alien plants in the Mediterranean, although apparent trends can easily be generated through artefacts of the data base.  相似文献

考古动物群是由古代生物群经过死亡群、埋藏群、化石群的逐次"过滤"而形成的一个"采集群"[1]。在这一漫长而复杂的地质历史过程中,不同来源、不同规模、不同作用方式的多种埋藏学因素都在其中打上了自己的深刻"烙印",并在各自的层面上改变了考古动物群的最终面貌,从而导致了化石记录与原始生物群之间的客观偏移。因此,在对考古遗址发掘出土的大量动物化石进行合理解释之前,有必要了解和研究那些可能影响考古动物群最终组成的埋藏学过程或动因。本文以东亚地区的几项埋藏学研究为例,重点阐释了一些可能导致考古动物群偏移的埋藏学过程。  相似文献

Multimodal warning displays combine visual signals with components produced in other sensory modalities, for instance, aposematically coloured insects often produce a pungent odour or harsh sound when they are attacked. Recent research has focussed upon a particular odour, pyrazine, which is commonly associated with warning coloration. Our experiments have shown that pyrazine elicits hidden unlearned biases against particular visual aspects of food in foraging domestic chicks. Here we asses the current state of our knowledge about these biases, reviewing our results using pyrazine and other odours, and also presenting new data showing that sound can produce similar effects. We will discuss potential psychological mechanisms by which these foraging biases are achieved in avian predators, and potential pathways for their evolution. Quantifying soil organic carbon (SOC) changes is a fundamental issue in ecology and sustainable agriculture. However, the algorithm‐derived biases in comparing SOC status have not been fully addressed. Although the methods based on equivalent soil mass (ESM) and mineral‐matter mass (EMMM) reduced biases of the conventional methods based on equivalent soil volume (ESV), they face challenges in ensuring both data comparability and accuracy of SOC estimation due to unequal basis for comparison and using unconserved reference systems. We introduce the basal mineral‐matter reference systems (soils at time zero with natural porosity but no organic matter) and develop an approach based on equivalent mineral‐matter volume (EMMV). To show the temporal bias, SOC change rates were recalculated with the ESV method and modified methods that referenced to soils at time t1 (ESM, EMMM, and EMMV‐t1) or referenced to soils at time zero (EMMV‐t0) using two datasets with contrasting SOC status. To show the spatial bias, the ESV‐ and EMMV‐t0‐derived SOC stocks were compared using datasets from six sites across biomes. We found that, in the relatively C‐rich forests, SOC accumulation rates derived from the modified methods that referenced to t1 soils and from the EMMV‐t0 method were 5.7%–13.6% and 20.6% higher than that calculated by the ESV method, respectively. Nevertheless, in the C‐poor lands, no significant algorithmic biases of SOC estimation were observed. Finally, both the SOC stock discrepancies (ESV vs. EMMV‐t0) and the proportions of this unaccounted SOC were large and site‐dependent. These results suggest that although the modified methods that referenced to t1 soils could reduce the biases derived from soil volume changes, they may not properly quantify SOC changes due to using unconserved reference systems. The EMMV‐t0 method provides an approach to address the two problems and is potentially useful since it enables SOC comparability and integrating SOC datasets.  相似文献

Although the study of signals has been part of human behavioral ecology since the field's inception,1 only recently has signaling theory become important to the evolutionary study of human behavior and culture.2 Signaling theory's rise to prominence has been propelled mainly by applications of costly signaling theory,3 which has shed light on a wide variety of human behaviors ranging from hunting4 to religion.5,6 Costly signaling rests on the idea that wasteful but highly visible traits and behaviors can be explained as honest indicators of underlying qualities that are otherwise difficult to detect. For example, a laborious hunting technique may serve as a display of skill on the part of the hunter, who may then be favorably perceived by potential mates and allies.4 The costs of the activity ensure that the signal is honest, since unskilled hunters will not be able to perform as well. Despite the usefulness of this perspective, many such studies begin by documenting a costly behavior that is then explained with reference to costly signaling theory. Because such behaviors are easy to detect, they may be overemphasized in the literature.7 Moreover, costly signaling theory by itself can explain neither all signals nor all aspects of signal design. In this review, we argue that a focus on the role that the psychology of the intended receiver plays in signal design can expand the scope of signaling theory as a promising avenue to explain human behavior.  相似文献

We investigate the relationship between cultural complexity and population size in a non-technological cultural domain for which we have suitable quantitative records: folktales. We define three levels of complexity for folk narratives: the number of tale types, the number of narrative motifs, and, finally, the number of traits in variants of the same type, for two well-known tales for which we have data from previous studies. We found a positive relationship between number of tale types and population size, a negative relationship for the number of narrative motifs, and no relationship for the number of traits. The absence of a consistent relationship between population size and complexity in folktales provides a novel perspective on the current debates in cultural evolution. We propose that the link between cultural complexity and demography could be domain dependent: in some domains (e.g. technology) this link is important, whereas in others, such as folktales, complex traditions can be easily maintained in small populations as well as large ones, as they may appeal to universal cognitive biases.  相似文献

Genes of a multicellular organism are heterogeneous in the G+C content, which is particularly true in the third codon position. The extent of deviation from intra-strand equality rule of A = T and G = C (Parity Rule 2, or PR2) is specific for individual amino acids and has been expressed as the PR2-bias fingerprint. Previous results suggested that the PR2-bias fingerprints tend to be similar among the genes of an organism, and the fingerprint of the organism is specific for different taxa, reflecting phylogenetic relationships of organisms. In this study, using coding sequences of a large number of human genes, we examined the intragenomic heterogeneity of their PR2-bias fingerprints in relation to the G+C content of the third codon position (P 3 ). Result shows that the PR2-bias fingerprint is similar in the wide range of the G+C content at the third codon position (0.30–0.80). This range covers approximately 89% of the genes, and further analysis of the high G+C range (0.80–1.00), where genes with normal PR2-bias fingerprints and those with anomalous fingerprints are mixed, shows that the total of 95% of genes have the similar finger prints. The result indicates that the PR2-bias fingerprint is a unique property of an organism and represents the overall characteristics of the genome. Combined with the previous results that the evolutionary change of the PR2-bias fingerprint is a slow process, PR2-bias fingerprints may be used for the phylogenetic analyses to supplement and augment the conventional methods that use the differences of the sequences of orthologous proteins and nucleic acids. The theory of evolution by natural selection has begun to revolutionize our understanding of perception, cognition, language, social behavior, and cultural practices. Despite the centrality of evolutionary theory to the social sciences, many students, teachers, and even scientists struggle to understand how natural selection works. Our goal is to provide a field guide for social scientists on teaching evolution, based on research in cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, and education. We synthesize what is known about the psychological obstacles to understanding evolution, methods for assessing evolution understanding, and pedagogical strategies for improving evolution understanding. We review what is known about teaching evolution about nonhuman species and then explore implications of these findings for the teaching of evolution about humans. By leveraging our knowledge of how to teach evolution in general, we hope to motivate and equip social scientists to begin teaching evolution in the context of their own field.  相似文献
