Specific binding of bovine prolactin and somatotropin by granulosa cells from the antral follicles of various diameters was studied in cows at different reproductive states, prepubertal, pubertal, and early gestation. The ability of granulosa cells to bind prolactin did not depend on the reproductive state of an animal. At the same time, the dynamics of somatotropin specific binding by granulosa cells during maturation of the antral follicles differed at dissimilar reproductive states of the cows. When the diameter of follicles increased from 3–5 to 6–10 mm, specific binding of 125I-somatotropin decreased in pubertal animals, but remained unchanged in the prepubertal and pregnant animals. The results of Scatchard analysis of the binding data indicate that sexual maturation of cows did not affect the binding of prolactin and somatotropin by granulosa cells from follicles of 1–2 mm in diameter. The data obtained suggest that the decreased sensitivity of granulosa cells to somatotropin at the terminal stages of maturation of the antral follicles is essential for their development and acquisition of the ability for ovulation.  相似文献

The adolescent growth spurt in linear dimension in humans is considered to be unique among mammals, but few comparative studies have been done, even on chimpanzees. Growth of the summed length of crown to rump, thigh, and leg was studied longitudinally in 12 chimpanzees. We took body weight growth and reproductive maturation into consideration. Reproductive maturation was monitored by the swelling of sexual skin and menarche in females, and by testicular development in males. We applied two relationships found in humans between body length growth and the environment to the chimpanzees. The first relationship was the robustness of the growth spurt, meaning that the spurt is absent only in individuals under the most severe environmental pressure. Subjects maturing in a favorable or even mediocre environment are anticipated to show the growth spurt. The second relationship was catch-up growth, where, when the environment is ameliorated, growth may be accelerated to attain the target size. Catch-up growth at the end of the juvenile period may mimic the adolescent growth spurt. Results showed that subjects living under favorable conditions did not exhibit a growth spurt, and that it was only the subjects who had delayed growth in the juvenile period that showed a spurt in adolescence, the period when reproductive maturation occurred. Although we have concluded that chimpanzees do not have an adolescent growth spurt, except in cases of catch-up growth, this does not mean that they have a different growth pattern from that of humans. The absence of a growth spurt may be associated with adaptations to chimpanzee patrilineal society, where adolescent males are incorporated into the adult hierarchy at a low rank.  相似文献

In Mali, adolescent girls face many physical stresses which, with a history of poor nutrition, can result in delayed growth and development. Despite the fact that adolescent girls encounter nutritional demands, most research in Mali has focused only on young children. This study examines anthropometric and reproductive data on 1,056 adolescent girls (aged 10-17 years) from the Segou Region of Mali. When compared to the reference population, the Malian girls exhibited poorer indicators of growth and development. Z-scores for height-for-age and weight-for-age were below 0 at all ages. Urban girls had better indicators of growth than rural girls. The body composition data show that the Malian girls have lower body fat than reference girls. Menarche was delayed by about 1.5 years compared to girls from the United States and Europe. Delayed growth and development may be due to many factors, including a history of undernutrition, poor socioeconomic status, and increased energy demands.  相似文献

Previous experiments have evidenced the neuroendocrine role of AMPA receptors. Present studies were carried out to obtain information on the role of these receptors in the control of the onset of puberty. To this end, female rats were i.c.v. injected with vehicle or AMPA (agonist of AMPA receptors: 0.1 or 0.5 nmol/day) between 26 and 30 days (Experiment 1), or 30 and 34 days (Experiment 2) of age. Serum concentrations of PRL, LH and estradiol were measured before drug administration, 10 min after the last injection, at vaginal opening (VO) and at first estrus (FE) presentation. In both experiments, AMPA administration inhibited PRL and estradiol secretion without affecting LH release. When AMPA was administered between 26 and 30 days a significant delay in the day of vaginal opening was observed. These results confirmed the inhibitory effect of AMPA on PRL secretion and suggests a role of AMPA receptors in the control of puberty onset.  相似文献

Small neurotoxin lesions in the medial preoptic area (MPOA) block maternal behavior (MB) in adults but large lesions are required to produce the same effect in juvenile rats (23-27 days of age). To study the maturation of MPOA control of MB, in Experiment I, we compared the effects of small versus large neurotoxin MPOA lesions at midpuberty (38 days of age) on MB. Midpubertal females with large MPOA lesions showed severe impairment in MB affecting retrieving, crouching, and nest building, but 85% of females with small MPOA lesions exhibited all components of MB and performed like control females without MPOA lesions. To study the role of ovarian hormones during puberty on the maturation of MPOA mediation of MB (Experiment IIA), females were ovariectomized either before or after puberty and small MPOA cytotoxic lesions were made at 53 days of age. At 60 days of age both groups showed similar deficits in MB which indicated that the maturation of the MPOA mediation of MB is not dependent on pubertal ovarian hormones. In Experiment IIB, we administered estradiol benzoate (sc) and this overcame the deficit in MB after small MPOA lesions in females that had been deprived of estrogen for shorter periods (30 days) but had not been deprived for longer periods (60 days). In addition, ovary-intact females with circulating estrogen and small lesions in the MPOA at 53 days of age did not show deficits in MB.  相似文献

The incidence, relative abundance and biological characteristics of mature male parr of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were studied in two subarctic (69–70 N°) river systems in the northernmost part of Scandinavia. The proportion of mature males was low (0–25%) among ≥1 year‐old parr, and clearly lower than reported earlier in more southern rivers. The ages of mature males ranged from 1+ to 6 + year, the most abundant age group was 3 + year. Both age structure and size of the mature male parr varied between rivers and years. Mature male parr in the main stem were younger and also smaller than the parr of the same age in the tributaries.  相似文献

Under defined environmental conditions (20°C, continuous light of 15 klx) development of mustard seeds from artificial pollination to maturity takes about 60 d. After surpassing the period of embryo cell division and histodifferentiation (12–14d after pollination = dap), the seed enters into a maturation period. The time courses of various physiological, biochemical, and structural changes of embryo and testa during seed maturation were analyzed in detail (dry and fresh mass changes, osmotic and water potential changes, respiration, DNA amplification by endomitosis, total ribosome and polysome formation, storage protein synthesis and accumulation, storage lipid accumulation). In addition to the final storage products protein and lipid, embryo and testa accumulate transiently large amounts of starch within the chloroplasts during early maturation. Concomitantly with the subsequent total breakdown of the starch, the plastids lose most of their internal structure and chlorophyll and shrink into proplastids, typical for the mature seed. At about 30 dap the seeds shift from a desiccation-sensitive to a desiccation-tolerant state and are able then to germinate rapidly upon drying and reimbibition. If isolated from the immature fruit and sown directly on water, the seeds demonstrate precocious germination from about 13 dap onwards. Young seeds (isolated ≦ 38 dap) germinate only after surpassing a lag-phase of several days (after-ripening) during which the embryo continues to accumulate storage protein and lipid at the expense of the surrounding seed tissues. We conclude from these results that the maturing seed represents a rather closed developmental system which is able to continue its development up to successful germination without any specific regulatory influence from the mother plant. Immature seeds are able to germinate without a preceding dehydration treatment, which means that partial or full desiccation does not serve as an environmental signal for reprogramming seed development from maturation to germination. Instead, it is argued that the water relations of the seed are a critical element in the control of maturation and germination: during maturation on the mother plant the embryo is subject to a considerable turgor pressure (of the order of 12 bar) accompanied by a low water potential (of the order of ?12 bar). This turgor permits maturation growth but is subcritical for germination growth. However, upon imbibition in water, the low water potential provides a driving force for a burst of water uptake overcoming the critical turgor threshold and thereby inducing germination.  相似文献

KK-42 (1-benzyl-5-[(E)-2,6-dimethyl-1,5-heptadienyl]imidazole), administered by feeding, delayed the growth and development of nondiapause-bound and diapause-bound Ostrinia nubilalis larvae and increased the length of the instar. At doses of 80–240 ppm, 62–100% of nondiapause-bound fourth instars precociously pupated or remained as fourth instars, while 52–100% of diapause-bound fourth instars did not molt to the fifth instar. Injection of these nondiapause- and diapause-bound KK-42-fed fourth instars with ecdysone elicited a molt and resulted in the production of larval-pupal intermediates. When mature fourth instar controls were similarly injected, they molted into normal fifth instars. These results support the view that KK-42 delays/inhibits ecdysteroid production. Both eupyrene and apyrene spermiogenesis were prematurely initiated in nondiapause-bound fourth instars that were fed on medium containing 160 ppm KK-42. Fenoxycarb, a potent juvenile hormone mimic, rescued nondiapause-bound fourth instars from precocious pupation. All fenoxycarbtreated larvae either molted to the fifth instar or remained as fourth instars and eventually died. These results support the view that treatment with KK-42 inhibits JH production. When KK-42 treatment was begun in the third instar, a considerable number of nondiapause-bound and some diapause-bound third instars precociously molted to the fifth instar. There was a correlation between weight and the incidence of precocious molting in that third instars destined to skip the fourth instar attained a weight, as pharate fifth instars, of two to three times more than pharate fourth instar controls. Similarly, fourth instars that were destined to undergo precocious pupation attained a weight, as pharate pupae, that was approximately two times more than pharate fifth instar controls. More potent analogues of KK-42 may prove useful in controlling populations of 0. nubilalis by interfering with their growth, development, and metamorphosis. © 1995 Witey-Liss, Inc.

Summary The influence of male-induced early puberty on female reproductive rate was determined in three lines of mice differing in litter size and body weight. The lines originated from a single base population and had undergone 20 generations of selection for the following criteria: large litter size at birth (L+), large litter size and small 6-week body weight (L+W), or small litter size and large 6-week body weight (LW+). Females were paired with a mature intact male of the same line at 3, 5 or 7 weeks of age. Mean mating age, averaged over lines, was 26.5 ± .3, 38.3 ± .3 and 52.7 ± .3 days. Exposure to a mature male accelerated female sexual maturation in each line. When contrasted with their sibs mated at a later age, early-pregnant females from each line exhibited a decline in one or more component of reproductive performance, suggesting that the physiological state of the very young female was not optimum for normal pregnancy. In comparisons of early and later mating ages, all three lines showed a decreased littering rate at first mating, number born alive, and individual birth weight of progeny adjusted for litter size; L+ and L+W mice showed an increased perinatal mortality rate; L+ and LW+ had a reduction in litter size at birth. When the L+, L+W and LW+ lines were compared with an unselected strain and a line selected for high postweaning gain in similar experiments, a genotype by environment interaction was apparent since all lines did not respond in a similar manner to early mating. The line ranking for litter size at birth for each age at male-exposure was L+>L+W>LW+, despite the significant line by age interaction. When litter size was adjusted by covariance for body weight at mating, the significant effects of age at male-exposure and line by age interaction were eliminated. All fertile females were remated after they had weaned their first litter to obtain information on litter size in parity two. Line differences in litter size at birth and number born alive were uniform across parities. An age by parity interaction was evident since the decreased fecundity at younger ages of male exposure in the L+ and LW+ litters of parity one was not evident in parity two. Litter feed efficiency during first parity gestation was defined as litter birth weight divided by either cumulative feed intake of the dam from mating to parturition (GEI) or cumulative feed intake from weaning to parturition (GEII). The ranking of lines for GEI and GEH was L+> L+W>LW+, but when feed efficiency was adjusted for littering rate, L+W and LW+ were not significantly different. With regard to age at mating, the ranking for GEI (7 wk > 5 wk > 3 wk) was reversed from GEII (3 wk >5 wk > 7 wk) and these significant differences were maintained after adjustment for littering rate.Paper No. 6302 of the Journal Series of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, Raleigh. As in the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta, the synthetic juvenile hormone analogue ETB (ethyl 4-[2-(tert-buthylcarbonyloxy)butoxy]benzoate) showed both juvenile hormone-like and anti-juvenile hormone activities in the silkworm, Bombyx mori. When ETB was topically applied to allatectomized 4th-instar larvae, the compound counteracted the effects of allatectomy, such as induction of precocious metamorphosis and black pigmentation in the larval markings. Therefore, ETB had juvenile hormone activity, but it could neither induce brown pigmentation in the markings nor induce an extra-larval moult as can juvenile hormone. When intact 3rd-instar larvae were treated with the compound, the majority underwent precocious metamorphosis in the 4th-instar, and later formed fertile miniature adults. Some moulted into larval-pupal intermediates or 5th-instar larvae with darkened larval markings and/or with abnormality of specific regions of the silk-gland. The optimal dose for such anti-juvenile effects was about 1–10 μg/larva, and higher doses showed less activity. Such anti-juvenile hormone effects of ETB were counteracted by administration of the juvenile hormone analogue, methoprene, before a certain critical time in the 4th-instar. The corpora allata of treated larvae appeared cytologically normal, and the corpora allata from ETB-induced miniature moths secreted juvenile hormone when implanted into allatectomized 4th-instar larvae.  相似文献
