The receptor for urokinase-plasminogen activator   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8  
Many human cells and cell lines possess a specific receptor that binds urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) with an affinity of about 10(-10) M. Bound enzyme is not internalized, is slowly dissociated, and retains its enzymatic activity. The amino acid sequence of uPA responsible for receptor binding is located within the first 35 aminoterminal residues, ie, in the growth factor domain. Binding, however, is not competed for by other proteins that contain the growth factor domain (including epidermal growth factor). Cells that produce uPA secrete the pro-uPA form, which subsequently binds to the receptor. A431 cells, in fact, have their receptors completely saturated with pro-uPA. It is proposed that uPA:uPA-receptor interaction plays a direct role in physiological and pathological processes that require cell migration.  相似文献

Diurnal and seasonal haul-out patterns, site fidelity and activity budgets of individually identified Hooker's sea lions were studied for two years at Papanui Beach, Otago Peninsula, New Zealand.
Fourteen male sea lions were identified. Lengths ranged from 1.65 m–2.28 m and estimated ages from 2-11 yr. The population consisted of four sexually and socially mature (potentially breeding), eight sexually mature but socially immature and two immature males. Most haul-outs (95.6%) were by nine identifiable individuals (Residents) returning on a regular basis, suggesting a high degree of site specificity. Emigration and recruitment were low in relation to the length of the study. Daily arrivals (mean = 0844 h, SD = 1.49) and departures (mean = 1802 h, SD = 1.18) indicate nocturnal feeding. During March 1986 sea lions spent 43.8% of each day ashore (= 78% of daylight hours). Numbers of sea lions hauled out declined in both breeding seasons; in 1986/87 this was due to a decrease in haul-out frequency of resident animals. All but one of these sea lions returned after the breeding season.
Sea lions preferentially selected the middle and the extreme ends of the beach as haul-out sites. During winter use was made of the grass dunes as haul-out areas.
There were significant differences in the frequencies of behavioral activities between summer and winter; more time was allocated to resting in summer.  相似文献

Migration and spawning behaviour of eight Atlantic salmon adult females were analysed by radio-tracking in relation to the degree of sexual maturity in a spawning tributary of the R. Sélune. Six of them were grilse and four of them were ripe. All the fish migrated upstream until reaching their spawning site at a distance of 4–12 km from the trap. The daily migration rate up to this site was inversely correlated with the length of the female. Spawning occurred in all fish at the same time when the water temperature increased dramatically. Spawning lasted 1–10 days according to the fish. After spawning, females quickly moved downstream only small distances and then stayed in approximately the same location until death. This study concluded that ripeness did not influence behaviour on the spawning migration and describes certain characteristics of the reproductive phase in a spawning tributary.  相似文献

Chromosome numbers for 26 different species of the generaPiper, Peperomia andPothomorphe (Piperaceae) are reported. The basic chromosome numbers are 2n = 26, x = 13 (Piper, Pothomorphe) and 2n = 22, x = 11 (Peperomia), polyploid series are characteristic forPiper andPeperomia. Piper has the smallest chromosomes and prochromosomal interphase nuclei,Peperomia the largest ones and mostly reticulate to euchromatic nuclei.Pothomorphe is intermediate in both characters. The karyomorphological differences betweenPothomorphe andPiper underline their generic separation. Interspecific size variation of chromosomes occurs inPiper andPeperomia. Infraspecific polyploidy was observed inPiper betle. C-banding reveals different patterns of heterochromatin (hc) distribution between the genera investigated. The pseudanthia ofHeliopsis scabra andRudbeckia vulgaris (Asteraceae) were examined during the anthesis for differences in their UV patterns. Distinct changes in the reflectance and absorbance properties could be observed. The results suggest a close correlation between different stages of floral development and pollinator attraction.

Summary The patterns of torpor and euthermy during hibernation was documented for 28 free-ranging Columbian ground squirrels (Spermophilus columbianus) fitted with temperature-sensitive radio transmitter collars. Adult males began hibernation earlier, were euthermic for a greater proportion of the hibernating season and emerged earlier than other age and sex classes. The patterns of hibernation of adult females did not differ significantly from those of juveniles. Emergence from the hibernaculum was preceded by a long (3–12 d) euthermic interval in adult males but not in adult females or juveniles. Changes in soil temperature did not appear to initiate emergence. The greater time spent euthermic by adult males is interpreted as a significantly greater energy cost of hibernation for adult males than for other age and sex classes. The benefits offsetting these costs may be increased reproductive potential in spring and avoidance of predation in late summer.  相似文献

Summary Two grass species, the annual Bromus sterilis and the perennial Bromus erectus, were grown from seeds for 28 days in a hydroponic culture system at 1 and 100 M NO3 - in the nutrient solution. At 100 M NO3 -, the relative growth rate (RGR) of the perennial was 30% lower than that of the annual. This was only the consequence of the higher specific mass of its leaves, since its leaf mass ratio was higher than that of the annual and the unit leaf rates (ULR), calculated on an area basis, were similar for the two species. At 1 M, the RGR of the annual was 50% lower than at 100 M, while that of the perennial was not significantly lower. This was due mainly to a lower ULR for the annual. while for the perennial ULR was the same in both treatments. These differences between the two species were all the more striking in that the differences in total nitrogen concentrations and nitrate reductase activities between the two treatments were very similar for both species. These different responses together with differences in the nitrogen productivity of the two species suggest that the level of nutrient availability may play an important role in the distribution of these Bromus species in natural habitats. A purified mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) probe was used to examine restriction fragment length polymorphisms produced by six restriction enzymes ( Xba I, Eco RV, Ava II, Hinf I, Hae III, Mbo I) in 915 brown trout from western Europe. A total of 20 composite haplotypes were found with one to seven haplotypes in individual populations. Icelandic trout samples from north, south, east, and west coast drainages showed only a single common haplotype in contrast to the high level of polymorphism found in Irish and Scottish populations. The phylogeny of mtDNA haplotypes and the pattern of haplotype distribution suggests that post-glacial colonization of brown trout in NW Europe was more complex than the dual colonization model which has been proposed on the basis of differential LDH-5* allele distribution. Cultures of Rhizosolenia formosa H. Peragallo were studied to assess whether or not physiological and optical characteristics of this large diatom were consistent with the ability to migrate vertically in the open ocean. Time-course experiments examined changes in chemical composition and buoyancy of R. formosa during nitrate (N)–replete growth, N starvation, and recovery. Cells could maintain unbalanced growth for at least 53 h after depletion of ambient nitrate. Increases in C:N and carbohydrate: protein ratios observed during N starvation reversed within 24 h of reintroduction of nitrate to culture medium. Buoyancy was related to nutrition: Upon N depletion, the percentage of positively buoyant cells decreased to 4% from 11% but reverted to 9% within 12 h of nitrate readdition. Cells took up nitrate in the dark. Nitrogen-specific uptake rates averaged 0.48 d?1; these rates were higher than N-specific growth rates (0. 15 d?1), indicating the potential for luxury consumption of nitrate, which can be stored for later use. Measurements of photosynthesis vs. irradiance, chlorophyll-specific absorption (aph*(λ)), and pigment composition showed that cells may be adapted for growth under a wide range of irradiances. Values of aph*(λ) were lower for N-depleted cells than for N-replete cells, and N-depleted cells had higher ratios of total carotenoids to chlorophyll a. Aggregation of chloroplasts was more pronounced in N-depleted cells. These are possibly photoprotective mechanisms that would be an advantage to N-depleted cells in surface waters. Compounds that absorb in the ultraviolet region were detected in N-replete cells but were absent in N-depleted cultures. Overall, these results have important implications for migrations of Rhizosolenia in nature. Cells may survive fairly long periods in N-depleted surface waters and will continue to take up carbon; then they can resume nitrate uptake and revert to positive buoyancy upon returning to deep, N-rich water. Uncoupled uptake of carbon and nitrogen during migrations of Rhizosolenia is a form of new production that may result in the net removal of carbon from oceanic surface waters.  相似文献
