Host-parasite relationships of Pratylenchus zeae and Quinisulcius acutus, alone or in combination, were studied on sorghum in the greenhouse and laboratory. Q. acutus at 1,000 or 5,000 nematodes per 15-cm-d pot and P. zeae at 500 nematodes per pot significantly suppressed plant height and fresh and oven dry shoot and root weights. A mixture of 1,000 Q. acutus and 500 P. zeae per pot resulted in greatest suppression of growth. Roots of plants inoculated with Q. acutus alone were reduced in number and size and showed lesions and discoloration. Reproduction of this nematode 42 days after inoculation was much greater in treatments of 100 or 1,000 than 5,000 nematodes. The population density of the two species at 6 weeks after inoculation was significantly less when combined than for each species alone. When the two species were combined, reproduction of P. zeae was greater than that of Q. acutus, but the final populations per gram of root weight were the same. Q. acutus fed ectoparasitically on epidermal cells of sorghum roots in the zone of elongation and differentiation when observed under in vitro conditions.  相似文献

The silicified Wenlockian (Silurian) bivalve fauna from MÖllbos, Gotland, is part of a life assemblage. The vast number of shells show unusual phenomena, e.g. shell repair, pearl and tumour formation, etc. A number of shells contain epibionts and bored, round holes. Presumptive predators of the bivalve community are discussed. Size-frequency distribution of the two most abundant species possibly reflects age classes. The fauna, comprising eleven species, is dominated by deposit-feeders (90 %). They exhibit niche diversification, including at least three different feeding levels within the sediment.  相似文献

During a 15-month investigation of the population dynamics of three caridean shrimp species in the Lam Tsuen River, New Territories, Hong Kong, the numbers of the commonest species, Neocaridina serrata (Stimpson)(Atyidae), were reduced as water temperatures fell. By contrast, Caridina lanceifrons Yu became more numerous during the winter. The relatively scarce Macrobrachium hainanense (Parisi)(Palaemonidae) tended to be more abundant during the summer, and the abundance of this species was directly correlated with that of N. serrata. The population size of these two species was positively correlated with water temperatures prevailing one and two months prior to the collection of samples, but there was no significant relationship between C. lanceifrons abundance and water temperature.All species exhibited similar growth patterns with an inflection at the attainment of sexual maturity, occurring after the (presumed) 14th moult for N. serrata and in the (presumed) 13th and 18th stadium for C. lanceifrons and M. hainanensis respectively. Ovigerous shrimps of all species were only recorded when water temperatures exceeded 20 °C and the % incidence of ovigerous N. serrata was positively correlated with prevailing temperatures. It is suggested that restriction of freshwater caridean breeding periods by low temperatures may be common in the subtropics while perennial breeding is more likely to be typical of tropical regions.The mean carapace length of N. serrata populations was negatively correlated with prevailing temperatures, but more strongly correlated with temperatures recorded one and two months prior to sampling when gametogenesis may have taken place. Smallest mean sizes were recorded in late summer upon the cessation of juvenile recruitment. N. serrata has a maximum longevity of approximately 12 months and reproduction occurs in the 7th month of life or later. The hatchlings are well developed and clutch size is not related to the size of the brooding female. Vertical distributions of zooplankton were studied in relation to profiles of temperature, oxygen and chlorophyll a in Roi Lake, a small meromictic lake in central Alberta. Zooplankton were distributed fairly evenly through the oxygenated part of the water column in early summer, but a gradual descent of several species became evident in June. The vertical distribution of chlorophyll was dominated by a huge peak at the 8- to 9-m-deep chemocline. the location of a plate of photosynthetic sulfur bacteria. Ambient concentration of chlorophyll was a poor predictor of the numbers of zooplankton and the fecundity of Daphnia pulicaria at different depths, and per capita birth rates of Daphnia were usually highest in the surface waters. The reproductively disadvantageous restriction of daphnids to deep water by late summer and their catastrophic decline in the face of high ambient concentrations of chlorophyll suggest that factors other than temperature and food supply are important in influencing the dynamics and distribution of zooplankton in this lake.  相似文献

Five years of monthly samples taken from three sites in the Broad Cove River, two at lake outlets and one a kilometer downstream from an outlet were analyzed. Considerable variations in the population of each species between sites and years were observed. Fluctuations in the populations were not always consistent from site to site or between species at the same site from one year to the next. As all sites were on the same stream and within 3 km of each other with only slight altitude differences climatic factors were not a major factor producing variations observed between sites. Also the previous years population level did not appear to be directly related to the following seasons population level. Apparently localized conditions at a site were exerting a marked influence on the larval simuliid population at each site.  相似文献

The population energetics of a temporary and a permanent pond population of Musculium partumeium in Southwest Ohio were studied. In the permanent pond (surface area = 396 m2, maximum depth = 0.7 m) the population was bivoltine and iteroparous whereas in the temporary pond (surface area = 1042 m2, maximum depth = 0.9 m) the population was usually univoltine and semelparous.Growth and biomass were assessed as total organic carbon and total nitrogen to provide estimates of productivity and seasonal changes in C:N for each generation. Productivity (non-respired assimilation = growth + reproduction; N-R.A. = G + R) was 6939 mgC·m–2·a–1 (3858 and 3353 mgC·m–2·a–1 for each generation) and 1661 mgC·m–2·a–1 for the permanent and temporary pond populations respectively. The average standing crop biomass (B) was 606.8 mgC·m–2 (357.5 and 249.3 mgC·m–2 for each generation) and 231.9 mgC·m–2 with overall productivity: biomass ratios of 11.4 and 7.2 for the permanent pond and temporary pond populations respectively.Respiration rates were converted to carbon equivalents (respired assimilation = R.A.) and used to evaluate the components of total assimilation (T.A. = R.A. + N-R.A.) and the efficiency of partitioning this energy to N-R.A. for G and R. When expressed as a percentage, the production efficiencies (100 × N-R.A.:T.A.) were 50.4 and 62%, and the reproductive efficiencies (100 × R:N-R.A.) were 26.4 and 18% for the permanent and temporary pond populations respectively. The reproductive efficiencies for populations of these viviparous clams are greater than those for most oviparous molluscs.The comparative information on the energetics of these populations does not completely fit any theoretical consideration of reproductive effort or life-history strategy. Population fluctuations of Heterodera glycines differ in fields with high and low initial population densities. In a field with low initial numbers of nematodes, the numbers of cysts and eggs in soil remained low through 100 days from planting then increased during the remainder of the growing season. In a field with high initial nematode populations, numbers increased at 30 days, decreased to low numbers at 100 days, and then resurged to maximum populations at harvest. Numbers of juveniles were greatest at 100 days in the low initial population density field and at planting in the high initial population density field. The initial numbers of eggs in the soil gave the best correlation to soil and root nematode populations 15 and 30 days later. Juveniles in the soil at planting gave the largest correlation coefficients with nematode populations in the roots at 15 days in the field with the low initial population density. Eggs and juveniles in the soil at harvest were poorly related to numbers that overwintered.  相似文献

Two soil extraction methods were compared to determine their efficiency in recovering cysts and juveniles of a tobacco cyst nematode, Globodera tabacum solanacearum. The methods were equally efficient when extracting nematodes from soil samples seeded in the laboratory; however, there was a significant extraction method × month interaction when the methods were used to estimate field soil populations over 2 years. The centrifugal sugar flotation method recovered greater numbers of cysts when densities were near 400 cysts/100 cm³ soil and greater numbers of juveniles in all samples. The sugar flotation method recovered greater numbers of cysts during months when densities were less than 400 cysts/100 cm³ soil. Numbers of cysts and juveniles were lowest in June and July following land tillage in May. A soil freeze in January 1982 may have been responsible for unusually high numbers of recovered cysts in February and March 1982, a pattern that did not occur in 1983.  相似文献

Summary The use of several S1 individuals to represent an S0 individual permits the use of a Design II mating scheme for plants with only one pistillate flower per plant. Estimates of additive (V A ) and dominance (V D ) variance from this mating scheme will be biased upwards, when a small number (10) of individuals of each S1 line are used. This bias can be computed, and the additive and dominance estimates can be corrected. Of particular interest is the observation that the additive genetic variance contributes to bias in estimates of V D . When S0 plants are non inbred and their selfedprogeny (S1 lines) are used to represent them in developing families for use in the Design II, where m1 is the number of individuals used to represent an S1 line in developing half sib-families and m2 is the number of individuals used to represent the S1 line in making up full sib-families. For example, in a 3×3 Design II, with about 10 individuals used to represent each S1 line in each cross, m2 = 10 and m1 = 30. Summary Two 30 g/ml BrdU-resistant sublines and two 60 g/ml BrdU-resistant sublines are induced from a Chinese hamster cell line Wg3h (HGPRT) by one-step and two-step selections, respectively. By inoculating the cells into BrdU-free medium or by adding more BrdU into the culture medium for 26–27 h, it was found that the two BrdU-resistant sublines analysed have very clear sister chromatid differential (SCD) staining patterns. This indicates that some of the nuclear DNA of the BrdU-resistant cells incorporate with BrdU to reach a kinetic balance. Frequencies of sister chromatid exchange (SCE) of the resistant cells are twice to four times as high as those of the Wg3h cells, depending on which BrdU-resistant subline is analysed. The SCE frequencies of the resistant cells also increase with the BrdU concentration in the medium. Analysis of silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) indicates that the NOR activity of three out of the four BrdU-resistant sublines is significantly suppressed, i.e., averages of the Ag-NOR number and number of the chromosomes bearing Ag-NORs per cell decrease significantly. The degree of suppression for different BrdU-resistant sublines may be quite different. The suppressed NOR activity of the resistant cells can gradually be restored when the cells are inoculated into BrdU-free medium, but the recovery speed is far lower than that of the Wg3h cells. The suppression of the NOR activity of the BrdU-resistant sublines should be due to BrdU toxicity.  相似文献
