The application of knowledge of water and nutrient relationships to improve forest management is discussed from an Australian perspective. The objectives of tree planting and forest management have become diverse, and there are outstanding examples of successful application of research results to forestry.Experiments seeking to explain the way water and nutrients influence growth tend to use treatments designed to ensure large differences in growth to increase the opportunities for identifying the mechanisms involved. The application of results from such research to many forestry situations, however, is harder than from research in which there is a closer match between treatments and management practices. The expectations of process-based models as management tools for economic decision-making is yet to be fulfilled. More progress is required in our ability to predict accurately the effects of soil and stand management practices on the production of marketable wood.The extent to which results of research on silvicultural practices are applied in practice is ultimately dependent upon economic return from investment. Water and nutrient relations have a significant influence on production, harvest index and log and wood quality. Recognition and understanding of this influence and the availability of management-oriented growth models incorporating process-based information, will permit better assessment of potential returns from management options. 相似文献

The beetle fauna of 299 sporocarps of the bracket fungus Fomitopsis pinicola in a 200 ha spruce forest in southeastern Norway was investigated in relation to sporocarp, tree and forest variables. The sporocarps contained 36 species of beetles, of which six species are on the Norwegian Red List. Of 12,373 individual beetles collected, 91% were Cis glabratus. Plots of species accumulation curves suggested that there may be more than 60 beetle species present in F. pinicola in the area, but that probably all the specialist Ciidae were found. The major factor influencing beetle diversity turned out to be the level of dead wood at and in the vicinity of the sampling site, with a higher number of species per unit volume of sporocarps in areas with high levels of dead wood. There were also significantly more red-listed species in those areas. Analysing the species occurrence with stepwise logistic regression, we show preferential habitat selection of the six most abundant species of Ciidae. Conservation of beetles associated with bracket fungi using amount of dead wood as a surrogate measurement is discussed. 相似文献

While plant height is the main driver of variation in mean vessel diameter at the stem base (VD) across angiosperms, climate, specifically temperature, does play an explanatory role, with vessels being wider with warmer temperature for plants of the same height. Using a comparative approach sampling 537 species of angiosperms across 19 communities, we rejected selection favouring freezing-induced embolism resistance as being able to account for wider vessels for a given height in warmer climates. Instead, we give reason to suspect that higher vapour pressure deficit (VPD) accounts for the positive scaling of height-standardized VD (and potential xylem conductance) with temperature. Selection likely favours conductive systems that are able to meet the higher transpirational demand of warmer climates, which have higher VPD, resulting in wider vessels for a given height. At the same time, wider vessels are likely more vulnerable to dysfunction. With future climates likely to experience ever greater extremes of VPD, future forests could be increasingly vulnerable. 相似文献

Bordered pits occur in walls of living ray cells of numerous species of woody dicotyledons. The occurrence of this feature has been minimally reported because the pits are relatively small and not easily observed in face view. Bordered pits are illustrated in sectional view with light microscopy and with scanning electron microscopy in face view for dicotyledonous and gnetalean woods. Bordered pits are more numerous and often have prominent borders on tangential walls of procumbent ray cells, but also occur on radial walls; they are approximately equally abundant on tangential and horizontal walls of upright cells, suggesting parallels to cell shape in flow pathway design. Axial parenchyma typically has secondary walls thinner than those of ray cells, but bordered pits or large simple pit areas occur on some cross walls of parenchyma strands. There is no apparent correlation between the phylogenetic position of species and the presence of borders in ray cells or axial parenchyma. Bordered pits represent a compromise between maximal mechanical strength and maximal conductive capability. High rates of flow of sugar solutions may occur if starch in ray cells or axial parenchyma is mobilized for sudden osmotic enhancement of the conductive stream or for rapid development of foliage, flowers, or fruits. The Tertiary floras play an integral role in understanding the biodiversity and interactions between climate and vegetation in Yunnan, China. The fossil spores, pollen grains, and leaves in this region have been investiaged intensively. In comparison, the woods have been studied relatively little. A large number of Pliocene wood specimens was collected from the opencast lignite coal mine of Hongxing situated in Changning County of Yunnan Province. Among the collection, Tsuga cf. dumosa (D. Don) Eichler and Pinus cf. armandii Franchet were identified based on wood structures. The subtle feature oftori extensions is reported in the wood of T. cf. dumosa. Considering the climatic requirements of modern T. dumosa and P.armandii, the two species of conifer described from Pliocene sediments probably grew in mountainous terrain at an elevation of approximately 2 300 m, in a cool and humid environment. 相似文献

Abstract The foliar and cambial responses of Prosopis cineraria to five different coal-smoke regimes in Delhi, India, were studied using the monthly collections of leaves and cambial blocks as well as the data on SO2, NO2 and particulate concentrations from each of the five study sites. Coal-smoke inhibited pigment concentration, NR activity and sugar content and promoted stomatal index and the nitrate and sulfur contents. Stomatal conductance was low, leading to a drop in the net photosynthetic rate. Cambial activity started quite late and the annual increment of wood was reduced despite a prolonged active phase, possibly due to a distinctly retarded rate of cambial cell division. Vessel proportion in the wood increased but the size of vessel elements and fibers decreased. Such studies may help in identifying trees suitable for cultivation in the pollution-affected areas. 相似文献

Moldy wood can cause some skin disease. However epoxy resin adhesive (EP) can inhibit mold growth. Therefore, antibacterial EP/wood biocomposites were reinforced and analyzed by the nonlinear finite element. Results show that glass fiber cloth and aluminum foil have the obvious reinforced effect under flat pressure, but this was not the case under side pressure. And when the assemble pattern was presented in 5A way, the strengthening effect was better. The nonlinear finite element showed that the aluminum foil and glass fiber cloth have the obvious reinforced effect. The mutual influence and effect of span, thickness and length on the ultimate bearing capacity of specimen were studied. And the simulation results agreed with the test. It provided a theoretical basis on the preparation of antibacterial EP/wood biocomposites against skin disease. 相似文献
