Changes in cell volume of planktonic bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) were examined in a hypereutrophic pond from April to October, 1997. There were marked changes in the abundance of bacteria, HNF and ciliates and in protistan bacterivory during this period. The cell volume of free-living bacteria (0.121 ± 0.031 m3, mean ± SD) was large relative to that reported in the literature. The cell volumes of HNF was 71.1 ± 24.8 m3. Both cell volumes did not follow a seasonal trend. The dominant size class of bacteria was seasonally variable, whereas density of filamentous bacteria was relatively high between August and September. Biomass of filamentous bacteria accounted for up to 33.6% of total bacterial biomass. A correlation analysis for cell volume of bacteria and HNF, density of filamentous bacteria and some microbial variates was performed. The positive correlations detected (p<0.05) were between density of bacteria and cell volume of HNF, and between density of filamentous bacteria and cell volume of HNF. 相似文献

The macrophyte vegetation of 51 ponds situated in the Duero river basin on the Northern Iberian Plateau was studied with the aim of selecting metrics that responded clearly to perturbation and that should be included in a multimetric index for assessing the ecological condition (expression of the quality of the structure and functioning of aquatic ecosystems associated with surface waters) of Mediterranean ponds. Furthermore, the specific response of metrics to the total phosphorus (TP) concentration was also investigated because of agricultural activities, which usually increase the concentration of nutrients in aquatic systems, are one of the principal types of impairment affecting ponds in the Duero basin.A total of 19 metrics representing several aspects of the structure of macrophyte communities (cover, richness, diversity) were selected as potential metrics.The strong overlap which was observed for macrophyte metrics between classes of ecological conditions (bad, poor, moderate, good, best available) and TP concentrations (>600, 600-300, 300-100, 100-50, <50 μg L−1 TP) constitutes a major problem in defining and separating these classes. For this reason, Mann-Whitney U-test and discrimination efficiency were carried out to determine which of the measures best discriminated between slightly impaired sites (ponds in good or best available condition) and perturbed ponds (ponds in moderate, poor or bad condition). Most of the metrics showed significant differences (p < 0.05) between slightly impaired and perturbed ponds. However, only total cover and hydrophyte richness, which had the highest discrimination efficiency (>78%), showed no inter-quartile overlap (25th-75th percentile) between the two ecological classes. For these reasons, both total cover and hydrophyte richness were selected for the implementation of a multimetric index able to discriminate between slightly impaired and degraded Mediterranean flatland ponds.Currently, eutrophication is considered the main pressure on lakes. However, macrophyte metrics were far less sensitive to TP concentration than to ecological condition changes. This shows that other pressures are also of considerable importance. Abstract: Shrubland birds are declining throughout the eastern United States. To manage scrub-shrub habitats for birds, managers need information on avian habitat relationships. Past studies have produced contradictory results in some cases and may be of limited generality because of site- and habitat-specific factors. We studied shrubland birds across 6 habitats in 3 New England states to provide more general information on habitat relationships than has been possible in past studies. Our study sites included all major scrub-shrub habitats in New England: wildlife openings, regenerating clear-cuts, beaver ponds, utility rights-of-way, pitch pine (Pinus rigida) woodlands, and scrub oak (Quercus ilicifolia) barrens and ranged from Connecticut to northern New Hampshire, with research conducted from 2002 to 2007. Using N-mixture models of repeated point counts, we found that 6 of 12 shrubland birds preferred areas with greater shrub cover. An additional 4 species appeared to prefer areas with lower-stature vegetation and greater forb cover. Eight of 10 bird species showed relationships with cover of individual plant species, with Spiraea spp., willows (Salix spp.), alders (Alnus spp.), and invasive exotics being the most important. We recommend that shrubland management for birds focus on providing 2 distinct habitats: 1) areas of tall (>1.5 m) vegetation with abundant shrub cover and 2) areas of lower (<1.5 m) vegetation with abundant forb cover but fewer shrubs. 相似文献

Cicuta virosa L. plants can grow in a pond subjected to heavy‐metal inputs at the Hitachi mine, eastern Japan. They accumulate heavy‐metal elements, especially high concentrations of zinc (Zn), in their roots. We focused on the role that root bacterial endophytes play in the heavy‐metal uptake of plants and the provision of heavy‐metal tolerance within plants. Our purpose was to clarify the effects of endophytes on: (i) Zn accumulation in C. virosa roots; (ii) growth of C. virosa seedlings; and (iii) heavy‐metal tolerance of C. virosa plants. Root endophytic Pseudomonas putida and Rhodopseudomonas sp., which induced the high production of Zn‐chelating compounds, were selected for the seedling inoculation test. The results of the inoculation test demonstrated that both strains of endophytes increased Zn accumulation in C. virosa roots by solubilizing Zn in the sediment. Both strains also increased the growth of seedlings by possible production of indole‐3‐acetic acid in the plant. The heavy‐metal tolerance of C. virosa seedlings was likely promoted by producing metal‐chelating compounds that detoxify the metals in the plant tissues, and by decreasing the heavy‐metal contents in the tissues via rapid seedling growth. Thus, such mutualistic interactions between plants and bacteria contribute to the persistence of C. virosa in this severe environment. 相似文献

Dental morphology provides important information on human evolution and interpopulation relationships. Dental wear is one of the major limitations of morphological data analysis. Wear figures heavily in existing debates about patterns of New World dental variation with some scholars finding evidence for a more generalized dentition in early New World populations (Powell: Doctoral Dissertation, Texas A&M University, TX (1995)) and others questioning these findings based on the probable effects of dental wear on trait scores (Turner, The First Americans: the Pleistocene Colonization of the New World. San Francisco: California Academy of Sciences (2002) 123–158; Turner: Am J Phys Anthropol 130 (2006) 455–461; Turner and Scott, Handbook of paleoanthropology, Vol. III: Phylogeny of Hominids. New York: Springer (2007) 1901–1941). Here we evaluate these competing claims using data from the Early Archaic Windover sample. Results confirm the dental distinctiveness of Windover with respect to other Old World Asian (i.e., sinodont/sundadont) populations. However, comparison of our results to those of Powell (1995) also highlights significant interobserver error. Statistical analysis of matched wear and morphology scores suggests trait downgrading for some traits. Patterns of missing data present a more challenging (and potentially serious) problem. Use of Little's MCAR test for missing data mechanisms indicates a complex process of data collection in which incidental and opportunistic recording of both highly worn and unerupted teeth introduce a “missing not at random” mechanism into our dataset that biases dental trait frequencies. The economics surrounding five algae-to-fuels process scenarios were examined. The different processes modeled were as follows: an open pond producing either triacylglycerides (TAG) or free fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), a solar-lit photobioreactor producing either FAME or free fatty acids (FFA), and a light emitting diode irradiated (LED-lighted) photobioreactor producing TAG. These processes were chosen to represent both classical and esoteric approaches presented in the open literature. Viable (or suggested) processing techniques to liberate and purify (and convert) the microalgal triacylglycerides were then modeled to accompany each growth option. The investment and cost per kg of fuel or fuel precursor for each process was determined. The open pond produced TAG at ~$7.50/kg, while the process using the LED-lit photobioreactor produced TAG at ~$33/kg. The scenario containing the solar-lit photobioreactor produced FAME at ~$25/kg, while the open pond produced FAME at ~$4/kg. The scenario containing the solar-lit photobioreactor produced FFA at ~$29/kg. The open pond scenarios appear to be closest to the $1/kg pricepoint at this time, and thus are the most viable economic options. Future technological advancements that reduce the cost of bioreactor vessels, LED lighting, and solvent recovery, may reduce the oil production costs of these scenarios to a more attractive level. 相似文献

The giant water bug, subfamily Lethocerinae, which has the largest body size among Belostomatidae, is known to be a vertebrate specialist that preys upon fish, amphibians and snakes. However, there have been no reports concerning predation on a turtle by Lethocerinae. Here, I report that a male giant water bug Kirkaldyia (Lethocerus) deyrolli (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) (58.09 mm in total length) was catching hold of a turtle Chinemys reevesii (34.14 mm in carapace length) in a ditch adjoining a paddy rice field. In this study we describe the growth of several different larval cohorts (i.e. half-siblings of the same mother born on the same day) of a rare, xeric-adapted salamander Salamandra s. infraimmaculata Martens, 1885, under constant density and food conditions from birth to metamorphosis. The larvae spend the critical first phase of their lives in water, mostly in temporary ponds. Age and weight at metamorphosis were highly affected by varying food conditions. We have identified six different growth modes that these larvae use, both fast growing and slow growing. Each larval cohort was found to use 2-4 different such growth modes regardless of their initial weight. Fast growing modes (I-III) will enable larvae to survive dry years, and metamorphose bigger. Slow growing modes (IV-VI), used by 8% of the larval population, will enable survival only in rainy years. These last growth modes effect differential temporal dispersal in wet years by delaying the emergence of postmetamorphs onto land. Distribution of growth modes in the larval population is affected by food but not by density conditions. Late-born, fast-growing larvae will have an advantage in dry years being able to metamorphose and disperse, whereas the slow-growing larvae will survive only in wet years. 相似文献
