Plant invasion is a major threat to the integrity of an ecosystem. Exceptionally successful invaders in Europe are the American species of Solidago genus. In this study we examined growth, reproduction, and phenology of Solidago species, of American origin, growing in central Europe (S. altissima, S. canadensis, S. gigantea, S. graminifolia). These taxa were compared with two native species: Solidago virgaurea and Tanacetum vulgare. We observed high differentiation in height, number of shoots, and biomass production between individuals within taxa. Generally, the invasive species produced substantially (two to five times) more biomass than the native ones, being statistically significant in the comparison of alien Solidago graminifolia and S. gigantea versus native S. virgaurea and T. vulgare. The ratio of biomass of reproductive parts to overall biomass varied considerably among years, but generally the lowest one was for Solidago altissima, and the highest for S. graminifolia. It shows a lack of a clear pattern of differentiation between alien and native species in terms of biomass investment in reproduction. We observed a general tendency of allocation of a major part of biomass in rhizomes by phalanx species (S. graminifolia and S. gigantea), while species with guerrilla strategy (S. altissima and S. canadensis) invested more biomass in stems and leaves. However, because of the high variability there was no clear, stable pattern of statistically significant differences between these two groups. The results suggest that S. graminifolia reveals a strong potential of invasion, in spite of its, so far limited, distribution in Europe.  相似文献

In order to make renewable fuels and chemicals from microbes, new methods are required to engineer microbes more intelligently. Computational approaches, to engineer strains for enhanced chemical production typically rely on detailed mechanistic models (e.g., kinetic/stoichiometric models of metabolism)—requiring many experimental datasets for their parameterization—while experimental methods may require screening large mutant libraries to explore the design space for the few mutants with desired behaviors. To address these limitations, we developed an active and machine learning approach (ActiveOpt) to intelligently guide experiments to arrive at an optimal phenotype with minimal measured datasets. ActiveOpt was applied to two separate case studies to evaluate its potential to increase valine yields and neurosporene productivity in Escherichia coli. In both the cases, ActiveOpt identified the best performing strain in fewer experiments than the case studies used. This work demonstrates that machine and active learning approaches have the potential to greatly facilitate metabolic engineering efforts to rapidly achieve its objectives.  相似文献

Australia, the flattest, driest, and geologically oldest vegetated continent, has a uniquely high proportion of nutrient-poor soils. We develop a "Nutrient-Poverty/Intense-Fire Theory," which postulates that most anomalous features of organisms and ecosystems of Australia are the evolutionary consequences of adaptations to nutrient poverty, compounded by intense fire that tends to occur as a result of nutrient poverty. The fundamental tenet of the theory is that plants growing in environments with plentiful light and periodic adequate moisture, but on soils poor in phosphorus, zinc, and other indispensible nutrients, can synthesize carbohydrates in excess of the amount that can be combined with, or catalyzed by, these nutrients for metabolism and production of nutrient-rich foliage and reproductive tissues. They use this "expendable energy" to produce well-defended foliage, large quantities of lignified tissues, and readily digestible exudates. Rapid accumulation of nutrient-poor biomass, a result of low rates of herbivory, provides fuel for intense fire. Intense fire exacerbates nutrient poverty by volatilizing certain micronutrients critical for animals. Anomalous features of organisms of Australia that can be explained by this theory, rather than by climate or phylogenetic history alone, include the following: most woody plants have long-lived, durable foliage; plants defend their tissues primarily with carbon-rich but nutrient-poor compounds; an unusually high proportion of plants protects seeds from fire and granivores in sturdy, woody capsules or follicles; plants allocate unusually large amounts of expendable energy to production of carbon-based exudates, such as nectar and gums; an unusually high proportion of plant species is pollinated by vertebrates that average larger size than pollinators on other continents; herbivores are small and have slow metabolism; there are no ruminants, mammals that eat mainly subterranean plant matter, or fungus-culturing termites and ants; vegetation dominated by leaf-spinescent plants is more extensive than vegetation dominated by stem-spinescent plants; nitrogen-fixing plants are major components of most vegetation types; there is a higher proportion of myrmecochorous plant species than on any other continent; there are hardly any stem-succulent and few leaf-succulent, perennial, non-halophytic plant species; and an unusually high proportion of bird species breeds cooperatively. Although the Nutrient-Poverty/Intense-Fire Theory can provide plausible explanations for these anomalous features, some puzzles remain, among them the great success of introduced herbivores, the lack of grazers on extensive grasslands on cracking clays, the apparently low productivity of ants, and the prominence of the parasitic plants of Australia. By examining the ratios of available energy to nutrients, particularly scarce nutrients, ecologists may identify processes not previously recognized as important for life forms or biotic adaptation on other continents.  相似文献

本文对凹唇壁蜂Osmia excavata Alfken和紫壁蜂O.jacoti Cockerell的时间、空间、营养和筑巢生态位进行了研究。结果表明,在苹果园内人工释放和管理条件下,两种壁蜂在不同的资源序列上具有不同的生态位宽度、生态位重叠和不同程度的竞争关系。其中在营养上的竞争最为激烈,生态位重叠值和种间竞争系数分别高达0.9690和0.9994。日活动时间生态位竞争次之,其重叠值和种间竞争系数分别为0.7960和0.9350;时间生态位(季节)和空间生态位重叠值则分别为0.6500和0.6710,种间竞争系数为0.8213和0.8234;并且在人工巢管的选择上竞争性最小,生态位重叠值仅为0.4930,种间竞争系数为0.6052。凹唇壁蜂在营养生态位和时间生态位上较高的专一性均表现出其比紫壁蜂对苹果传粉作用更为显著。紫壁蜂在苹果开花后期的传粉作用较强。  相似文献

The phenology and pollination ecology of three native fig species were studied in southeastern Brazil. Populations displayed continual syconia production, with one species showing intra-tree flowering asynchrony. Pollination of the fig flowers was necessary for the development of the syconia; lack of pollination induced abortion of syconia. All three species follow the general pattern of pollination known for figs, but the behavior of the pollinator wasps, Pegoscapus spp., differed in some aspects from those of other neotropical and paleotropical fig wasps, mainly with respect to pollen loading and unloading during pollination. The longevity of Pegoscapus wasps outside the syconium was about two days.  相似文献

Old flowers of Cyclamen generate few or no seeds. To understand the pollination problems of Cyclamen we investigate the general anatomy of the stigma and the style of Cyclamen persicum by scanning electron microscopy at different stages of floral maturity. Our investigations confirm that there is a hollow style. Against data commonly found in the literature, we present evidence of pollen germination and tube growth that show the stigma is not outside the style but inside it. Furthermore the maturation process of the style during the flowering time indicates a mechanism by which the stigma becomes shut off through closure at the terminal aperture of the style. At 3 to 5 days after anthesis there was the beginning closure of the style which was nearly completed at 21 days. The substance which leads to the closure is still unknown. The closure of the hollow style is a probable cause for failure of seed set in flowers not pollinated early in anthesis.  相似文献

A group of representative species of the genus Puya was studied to determine if there are allometric relationships between vegetative and floral parts, whether these relationships correlate with their pollination system and if plant size is correlated with elevation and latitude. Fifty-three species representing the morphological variation and distribution of the genus were studied. Total plant height, as well as leaf, inflorescence, petal and sepal length were measured and these data subjected to univariate and multivariate analyses. To test for correlation between plant size and altitudinal and latitudinal distribution, ANOVAs were performed. When the pollination system of a species is known, additional multivariate and univariate analyses were also performed. The results indicate that the characters studied are correlated with a size component, exhibiting positive allometry for sepal and petal length and negative allometry for leaf length. Inflorescence length is an isometric character. There was no significant correlation between plant size and altitudinal or latitudinal distribution. The ANOVAs show that the only character correlated to pollinator type was petal length. Small plants with small flowers are correlated to pollinators such as insects, while medium to large plants with medium to large-sized flowers are correlated with pollinators such as birds and bats. Large plants have small flowers, that are more evident and attract more pollinators.  相似文献

Comparative modeling is the method of choice, whenever applicable, for protein structure prediction, not only because of its higher accuracy compared to alternative methods, but also because it is possible to estimate a priori the quality of the models that it can produce, thereby allowing the usefulness of a model for a given application to be assessed beforehand. By and large, the quality of a comparative model depends on two factors: the extent of structural divergence between the target and the template and the quality of the sequence alignment between the two protein sequences. The latter is usually derived from a multiple sequence alignment (MSA) of as many proteins of the family as possible, and its accuracy depends on the number and similarity distribution of the sequences of the protein family. Here we describe a method to evaluate the expected difficulty, and by extension accuracy, of a comparative model on the basis of the MSA used to build it. The parameter that we derive is used to compare the results obtained in the last two editions of the Critical Assessment of Methods for Structure Prediction (CASP) experiment as a function of the difficulty of the modeling exercise. Our analysis demonstrates that the improvement in the scope and quality of comparative models between the two experiments is largely due to the increased number of available protein sequences and to the consequent increased chance that a large and appropriately spaced set of protein sequences homologous to the proteins of interest is available.  相似文献

Estuarine ecosystems are characterized by high zooplanktonic biomasses, essentially constituted by copepods and mysids whose nutritional requirements are mainly provided by phytoplankton, an easily available carbon form. The Gironde estuary is characterized by high turbidities which limit light penetration in the water column and therefore primary production. Consequently, primary production is low and its availability for higher trophic level is very limited. The main goal of this study was to characterize the total vegetal particulate organic matter (POM) in high turbidity zones of the Gironde estuary during summer (a critical period characterized by high heterotrophic bacterial degradation and high zooplanktonic biomasses) and to analyse its utilization by zooplankton, using prey/predator experiments and trophic biomarkers (fatty acids). The specific goals were to define (i) how vegetal POM was exploited by the different zooplanktonic groups (protozoa, copepods and mysids) and (ii) which alternative preys could be used when vegetal POM was not sufficient to ensure their nutritional requirements.Chlorophyll biomass was very low in the MTZ during summer 2002 (0.48 ± 0.03 mg m− 3). Total zooplankton grazing was low (19% d− 1) probably due to a large contribution of detritus originating from terrestrial plants in vegetal POM compared to phytoplankton. The highest grazing pressure was exercised by the mysid Mesopodopsis slabberi due to its high abundances and by its almost entirely herbivorous diet (phytoplankton and small terrestrial detritus). Grazing rates (19.7 ± 4.2 and 9.6 μgC cop− 1 d− 1 for juveniles and adults, respectively) seemed to be sufficient to satisfy their daily carbon requirement. Grazing rate of the copepod Eurytemora affinis (139 ngC cop− 1 d− 1) seemed to be insufficient to cover its nutritional requirements and the copepods probably needed to complete a great part of their diet from protozoa. Grazing rates of the mysid Neomysis integer (24.7 ± 0.01 and 20.89 ± 8.45 μgC cop− 1 d− 1 for juveniles and adults, respectively) were higher than those of M. slabberi when feeding only on phytoplankton. However, when other preys were introduced in its environment, N. integer only fed on the copepod E. affinis with a preference for nauplii. The study revealed the great importance of protozoa and bacteria in the trophic transfers between vegetal POM and zooplankton in the MTZ during summer, despite the low protozoa grazing pressure on vegetal POM (3.1%). The detritic food chain probably implies various trophic transfers with little direct relationships between vegetal POM and zooplankton.  相似文献

Charles Darwin studied floral biology for over 40 years and wrote three major books on plant reproduction. These works have provided the conceptual foundation for understanding floral adaptations that promote cross-fertilization and the mechanisms responsible for evolutionary transitions in reproductive systems. Many of Darwin''s insights, gained from careful observations and experiments on diverse angiosperm species, remain remarkably durable today and have stimulated much current research on floral function and the evolution of mating systems. Here I review Darwin''s seminal contributions to reproductive biology and provide an overview of the current status of research on several of the main topics to which he devoted considerable effort, including the consequences to fitness of cross- versus self-fertilization, the evolution and function of stylar polymorphisms, the adaptive significance of heteranthery, the origins of dioecy and related gender polymorphisms, and the transition from animal pollination to wind pollination. Post-Darwinian perspectives on floral function now recognize the importance of pollen dispersal and male outcrossed siring success in shaping floral adaptation. This has helped to link work on pollination biology and mating systems, two subfields of reproductive biology that remained largely isolated during much of the twentieth century despite Darwin''s efforts towards integration.  相似文献
