Serum copper and zinc levels were determined in 20 healthy women and in 100 women with gynecological tumors. Malignant and
benign tumor cases were separated according to their postoperative, histopathological examinations. The stages of malignant
and benign tumors were also established histologically. Seventy benign and 30 malignant genital tumors (carcinoma of cervix
in situ, cervix, ovary endometrium, and vulva) of the patients were differentiated histopathologically.
The serum Cu/Zn ratios of patients were increased significantly from the control group (0.32±0.35) to the benign group (1.22±0.63)
and from the benign group to the malignant group (2.24±1.03). Nine of 30 malignant cases were determined as false negative
(30%) and 15 of 70 benign cases were determined as false positive (14.2%) according to the serum Cu/Zn ratios of patients.
Serum copper levels of 30 malignant and 10 benign tumor cases showed linear correlation with serum ceruloplasmin values. 相似文献

The pygmy chimpanzee, or bonobo, Pan paniscus,diplays a fission-fusion social organization in which individuals associate in parties that vary in size and composition.
Data from a 2-year field study of nonprovisioned P. paniscusshow that party composition varies with party size. Although females, on average, outnumber males, the proportion of males
in the party increases in larger parties. This effect was not due to the greater number of known females. Both females and
males will join and leave a party in the company of others, but only males appear frequently to join or leave as lone individuals.
All-male parties were not observed, but all-female (nonnursery) parties were relatively common. These trends reflect greater

In two experiments, wheat plants growing in solutions of different nitrogen concentration were subjected to root pruning. In higher concentrations of nitrogen the growth rate was higher, and the proportional allocation of growth to shoot higher, but pruning did not affect the allocation of growth at either level of nitrogen. Three axenic and rhizosphere microorganism-inoculated shortgrass steppe plant species were evaluated for possible differences in residual organic carbon and nitrogen present as sugars, organic acids and amino acids. IntroducedAgropyron cristatum was compared toA. smithii andBouteloua gracilis, which are dominant species in the native shortgrass steppe. These plants, grown for 90 days in root growth chambers, showed differences in residual organic carbon and nitrogen per gram of root, and rhizosphere microbe presence resulted in additional changes in these compounds. The root biomass ofB. gracilis was significantly increased with microbes present. TheAgropyron species had significantly lower amino acid levels with microbes present, while under the same conditions, theB. gracilis showed significant decreases in residual sugars. Based on the amino acids, sugars and organic acids, the C/N ratio of the sterileA. cristatum was higher than forB. gracilis. Rhizosphere microbe presence did not result in changes in these C/N ratios. These results suggest thatA. cristatum, with microbes present, will have lower levels of amino acids present, whileB. gracilis, with a lower C/N ratio, will have sugars used to a greater extent by the rhizosphere microbes. This resulted in the higher levels of residual soluble organic C and N in the rhizosphere ofB. gracilis, in comparison with the introducedA. cristatum. These differences may be critical in influencing the course of nutrient accumulation and plant competition in short-grass steppe communities, and in understanding basic aspects of plant-rhizosphere microorganism interactions. 相似文献

Summary Dynamics of F-actin organization during activation and germination ofPyrus communis (pear) pollen was examined using rhodaminephalloidin. Prior to activation, the rhodamine-phalloidin labelling pattern appeared as circular profiles in the peripheral cytoplasm of the vegetative cell and as coarse granules around the vegetative nucleus. In activated pollen, parallel arrays of cortical F-actin were aligned circumferentially, along the polar axis in non-apertural areas of the pollen grain, and at 45° to 90° to the polar axis beneath the apertures. Some pollen also showed fluorescent granules or fusiform bodies dispersed throughout the cytoplasm, but as the number of such pollen diminished with prolonged incubation, these are being considered as intermediate patterns. In later stages, the filaments became organized as interapertural bundles traversing the three apertures. However, prior to emergence of the pollen tube, labelling became confined to a single aperture. In germinated pollen grains, actin microfilaments are aligned more or less axially with respect to the axis of the developing pollen tube.The granular labelling pattern seen around the vegetative nucleus prior to pollen activation also became clearly filamentous with pollen activation; this filamentous pattern persisted until germination when it was replaced by cables that aligned longitudinally with respect to the emerging tube axis.The results demonstrate that the organization of actin undergoes considerable changes in the period preceding pollen germination and that microfilament polarization is achieved before pollen germination. 相似文献

Summary Cytological changes associated with the final maturation, and dehiscence of the 16-grain compound pollen (polyads) have been followed in anthers at female and male phase of flowering. InAcacia retinodes, the transition from female to male phase takes approximately 24 h. The spherical generative cell at female phase is connected with the vegetative cell plasma membrane by a junction zone. This is sited adjacent to a germinal aperture, comprising wall ingrowths and membrane labyrinths. By male phase, the generative cell has elongated into a spindle-shape, and its surface is characteristically scalloped. The membrane labyrinths, especially those at the apertures, now contain masses of coated vesicles, implicated in the transport and secretion of proteins. Summary Interspecific crosses were made between seven Lilium species, viz. L. candidum, L. concolor, L. dauricum, L. henryi, L. longiflorum, L. nepalense and L. rubellum. A complete diallel cross was carried out between these seven species, including self- and intraspecific pollinations using three pollination methods: normal pollination on the stigma, pollination on the ovary after cutting the style, and pollination on the stigma with the aid of mentor (non-functional, compatible) pollen. Embryo rescue, starting 35 days after pollination, was applied to all interspecific combinations. The percentage of successful crosses was about 2.8% after normal pollination, 5.4% after cut-style pollination and 3.8% with the mentor pollen technique. Crosses with L. nepalense were exceptional in that embryos died during the embryo culture phase. Seventeen cross combinations (including 4 reciprocals) yielded 62 embryo plantlets from 839 interspecific pollinations. 相似文献

The longest continuous Amazonian palynological record (ca 7010 yrs B.P. to present) from Lake Ayauchi, Ecuador, reveals species-by-species abundance changes during a period of climatic change. Pollen influx from a wet tropical rain forest was found to be high, 1×104–105 grains cm-2 yr-1, although mature forest taxa were poorly represented. Horizons of laminated sediments and weathered gyttja, dated to ca 4200–3150 B.P., evidence a period of reduced net water availability. During this period Ficus, Alchornea and Palmae pollen representation appears to decline, although there is no evidence of a major forest compositional change. The lake was reduced to a shallow, possibly seasonal, pool. Zea cultivation was recorded between ca 2850 B.P., (the earliest paleoecological record to date in the Amazon basin) and ca 800 B.P. It is suggested that Zea was cultivated on exposed lake sediment within the crater at times of low water levels. The abandonment of Zea cultivation may have been due to rising water levels or social unrest. 相似文献

Abstract.
- 1 We report on the mating system of a field population of the parasitic wasp, Bracon hebetor, on a corn pile infested by the Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella. We demonstrate that the mating system is based upon male scramble competition polygyny with male aggregations on high places on the corn.
- 2 The sex ratio among adults was greater than 80% males on the surface of the corn, whereas below the surface the sex ratio was less than 45%. Males actively courted females on the surface, but there were no aggressive interactions among males during courtship or mating.
- 3 Approximately 20% of the females found on the surface of the corn had no sperm in their spermathecae, regardless of age, but the numbers of unmated females decreased later during the day.
- 4 In laboratory studies we showed that females from this population oviposit a female biassed sex ratio, and that only 14% of females were mated before dispersing from their place of emergence.
- 5 Thus sib-mating is unlikely in this gregarious parasitoid. This outcrossing mating system probably arose because of severe inbreeding depression that B.hebetor suffers via a sex locus: diploids that are heterozygous at the sex locus develop into females, but homozygous diploids are male and are generally inviable. The female biassed sex ratio may have evolved in B. hebetor in response to males being the more expensive sex, females dispersing more frequently from the population than males, or a fraction of females remaining unmated in the population.
