As a result of the division of Cyprus in 1974, and until the mid‐1980s, Greek‐Cypriot nationalism was suppressed at the expense of Cypriotism, an ideology that pledged support to the political independence of the island. The retreat of nationalism, however, was temporary and it soon resurfaced as a dominant ideology, albeit in a changed form. The new Greek‐Cypriot nationalism does not go unopposed. Whereas the clash between Greek nationalism and Cypriotism is not a recent phenomenon, in the post‐1974 years it has acquired a greater intensity and constitutes the major battle in the Greek‐Cypriot contest over identity. This essay examines the post‐1974 period and especially the revival of Greek‐Cypriot nationalism since the mid‐1980s. The aim is to analyse the ideological contest between Greek nationalism and Cypriotism as it becomes articulated in the social construction of cultural and political identity and the collective memory of the Greek‐Cypriot community. 相似文献

This essay provides a critical reflection on the intellectual and political questions raised by The Empire Strikes Back. It argues that thirty years after the collection helped establish the politics of race at the centre of mainstream scholarly debate; these have now been pushed to the periphery of British sociology. The discussion begins by setting the book against its prevailing political economy, before commenting on the virtue and authenticity in its type of critical scholarship. 在微生物学课程中开展思政教学有助于提升相关专业学生的思想道德修养和综合素质,是当前高校教育"立德树人"根本任务的具体要求,也是思政教育"全过程、常态化"的重要体现。案例教学法是微生物学课程思政的一种重要教学方法,主要以微生物学科发展中的一些著名学者及其事迹为案例,引导学生认识和理解这些案例的思想内涵,以提升自身思想道德水平。该教学方法在实践中获得了较为理想的教学效果,但也存在着设计不够充分、时效性不足等问题。针对这些问题,本文提出了以新型冠状病毒肺炎(COVID-19,简称"新冠"病毒肺炎)疫情为案例的问题导向式微生物学课程思政教学设计方案。该设计基于当前"新冠"病毒肺炎疫情中涌现出的诸多先进人物和事迹,以及暴露出的一些不良现象和问题,通过将这些案例与微生物学专业知识,以及微生物学科发展历史上的经典人物事迹进行有机整合和提炼,开展问题导向式教学。这些案例都是学生亲身经历过的重大事件,因此能有效地提升学生的参与感,引发学生的共鸣。使用这些案例是对微生物学课程思政经典教学案例的有益补充,能更好地引导学生在学习相关专业知识的同时,主动思考各案例所蕴含的思想道德意义并将之内化为自己的价值信念,帮助他们塑造正确的"三观",最终实现微生物学课程思政"寓思想教育于科学知识学习"的教学目标。 相似文献

Prominent theories of the US racial order contend that phenotypically light Latina/os will elevate to an honorary White category as a result of their socio-economic advantages over darker Latina/os. Accordingly, light Latina/os are presumed to adopt colour-blind racial ideology to cement their elevated racial status. This study is among the first to examine the relationship between skintone and Latina/os’ colour-blind ideology adherence with nationally representative data. I examine these relationships with data from the 2006 Portraits of American Life Study, and test the robustness of findings across two alternative national data sets: the 2014 General Social Survey, and the 2006 Latino National Survey. Across data sets, different measurement approaches, and time periods, this study finds no evidence that skintone shapes Latina/os’ levels of colour-blind ideology adherence. The study concludes by considering why the racial ideology of light Latina/os is non-concordant with their elevated socio-economic status in relation to darker Latina/os. 相似文献

Civil society is the foundation of a healthy democracy but its immigrant element has received little attention. This paper is a case study of immigrant organizations of highly skilled Asian Indians and Chinese immigrants in a suburban town of Edison, New Jersey. I find that civic participation of Asian Indian immigrants spills over into political incorporation while Chinese immigrant organizations remain marginalized. I argue that local processes of racialization are central in explaining differences in political incorporation of immigrants. In the local context, the Chinese are seen as successful but conformist model minorities and Asian Indians as invaders and troublemakers. The racialization of Asian Indians has resulted in more political activity and higher levels of political visibility of their organizations. The results highlight shortcomings of current assimilation theories, which give little space to civic and political incorporation and view human capital in an unqualifiedly positive light. 相似文献

When socio-economic contexts are sought for Darwin’s science, it is customary to turn to the Industrial Revolution. However,
important issues about the long run of England’s capitalisms can only be recognised by taking a wider view than Industrial
Revolution historiographies tend to engage. The role of land and finance capitalisms in the development of the empire is one
such issue. If we historians of Darwin’s science allow ourselves a distinction between land and finance capitalisms on the
one hand and industrial capitalism on the other; and if we ask with which side of this divide were Darwin and his theory of
branching descent by natural selection aligned, then reflection on leading features of that theory, including its Malthusian
elements, suggests that the answer is often and largely, though not exclusively: on the land side. The case of Wallace, socialist
opponent of land capitalism, may not be as anomalous for this suggestion as one might at first think. Social and economic
historians have reached no settled consensuses on the long-run of England’s capitalisms. We historians of Darwin’s science
would do well to import some of these unsettled states of discussion into our own work over the years to come. 相似文献
