Factors influencing the characteristics of fish assemblages in a large subtropical marine embayment 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Mean number of species and density of fishes in nearshore shallow waters of Shark Bay, a large subtropical embayment, were c . seven and 19.5 times greater in seagrass than over bare sand, where protection from predators and the abundance of potential invertebrate prey were less. The number of fish species and density of fishes over bare sand were lower in nearshore than offshore waters, where there was a greater amount of organic material and thus presumably a greater density of benthic macroinvertebrate prey. Species composition in vegetated and unvegetated habitats differed markedly, with species such as Monacanthus chinensis, Apogon rueppellii and Pelates quadrilineatus being largely confined to seagrass, whereas others such as Pseudorhombus jenynsii, Torquigener whitleyi and Engyprosopon grandisquama were found predominantly or exclusively over bare sand. The ichthyofauna in beds of Posidonia australis , in which the canopy is uniformly dense, differed in composition and comprised a greater number of species and density of fishes than that in Amphibolis antarctica , in which an open space is present beneath the terminal clusters of relatively short leaves. Species composition in the beds of both of these seagrass species underwent well defined cyclical changes, caused by out-of-phase sequential changes in the densities of certain species. Such changes were less common over bare sand, where the ichthyofaunal composition was more variable. The number of species and density of fishes over bare sand were greater at night than during the day, reflecting, in part, a tendency for species such as A. rueppellii to move into unvegetated areas to feed at night, when the likelihood of predation by visual predators would be reduced. Within Shark Bay, ichthyofaunal composition is influenced most by habitat type (vegetated v . unvegetated), followed in general by water depth and then region in the bay and time of year. 相似文献

To determine the economic threshold level, oriental melon (Cucumis melo L. cv. Geumssaragi-euncheon) grafted on Shintozoa (Cucurbita maxima × Cu. moschata) was planted in plots (2 × 3 m) under a plastic film in February with a range of initial population densities (Pi) of Meloidogyne arenaria. The relationships of early, late, and total yield to Pi measured in September and January were adequately described by both linear regression and the Seinhorst damage model. Initial nematode densities in September in excess of 14 second-stage juveniles (J2)/100 cm³ soil caused losses in total yields that exceeded the economic threshold and indicate the need for fosthiazate nematicide treatment at current costs. Differences in yield-loss relationships to Pi between early- and late-season harvests enhance the resolution of the management decision and suggest approaches for optimizing returns. Determination of population levels for advisory purposes can be based on assay samples taken several months before planting, which allows time for implementation of management procedures. We introduce (i) an amendment of the economic threshold definition to reflect efficacy of the nematode management procedure under consideration, and (ii) the concept of profit limit as the nematode population at which net returns from the system will become negative. 相似文献

For functioning of a root system, the temporal development of distribution of roots in the soil is important. For example, for computing uptake of water and nutrients the root length density distribution might be required. A way to describe root proliferation is to consider it as a diffusion process with a first-order sink term accounting for decay. In this paper, analytical solutions are derived for two-dimensional diffusion of roots both in a rectangular area, and in a cylindrical volume. The source of root dry matter is located at the surface. Root dry matter enters the soil domain through a part of the soil surface. It is shown that different distribution patterns are obtained, with different ratios of the diffusion coefficients in horizontal and vertical direction. From the solutions obtained it can be shown that for the situation where the dry matter enters through the complete surface eventually a steady-state occurs where root length density decreases exponentially with depth, as often is found in experiments. 相似文献

Development of fine and coarse roots of Thuja occidentalis `Brabant' in non-irrigated and drip irrigated field plots 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Aboveground dry mass, total root dry mass and root length density of the fine roots of Thuja occidentalis `Brabant' were determined under non- and drip-irrigated field conditions. Two-dimensional diffusion parameters for dynamic root growth were estimated based on dry mass production of the fine roots and the concept of the convective-diffusion model of cylindrical root growth and proliferation. Drip irrigation increased above-ground dry mass and the shoot:root ratio compared with no irrigation. Dry mass of the coarse roots increased as well due to drip irrigation. No effect on total or fine root dry mass was found. Drip irrigation increased root length densities in the top 0.1 m but not significantly. However, drip irrigation decreased root proliferation in depth by 27%, whereas proliferation in the horizontal direction was not altered. We studied colour morph diversity and frequencies of light and dark morphs in non-fluctuating and fluctuating populations of willow feeding leaf beetle Chrysomela lapponica in the Kola Peninsula, NW Russia. Population-specific Shannon–Weaver diversity index positively correlated with dark morph frequencies, indicating that the larger part of colour polymorphism is related with numbers and diversity of dark morphs. Among-population variation in studied characters was not explained by pollution load or predation rates, but depended on the type of the population and the stage of density change in the fluctuating populations: both colour morph diversity and frequency of dark morphs were low in declining post-outbreak populations but equally high in non-fluctuating populations and in fluctuating populations at peak densities. In time-series, both diversity index and frequency of dark morphs decreased with post-outbreak density decline in the fluctuating population, but did not change in the non-fluctuating population. In the experiment, when adults received low quality food (plants from post-outbreak site), mortality of dark morphs during the hibernation was almost doubled relative to the mortality of light morphs, whereas on high quality food the colour morphs demonstrated similar mortality. This may indicate, that decrease in colour polymorphism extent and dark morph frequencies in the declining populations is due to selective mortality of dark morphs imposed by density dependent (induced by heavy herbivore damage during an outbreak) decrease in host-plant quality (delayed inducible resistance, DIR). DIR is known as one of the factors driving herbivore populations, but our result is the first evidence that DIR may act as a factor of natural selection. Dark morphs are not only susceptible to low food quality, but also have smaller size compared to light morphs, and therefore the dark females are presumably less fecund. Thus, decrease in frequency of low-fitness (dark) individuals in post-outbreak populations and accumulation of low-fitness phenotypes at the popu-lation peak may create feedbacks contributing to regulation of density fluctuations in Ch. lapponica. 相似文献

目的 探讨人参皂甙Rg1抑制氧化低密度脂蛋白(oxidized low-density lipoprotein,OxLDL)诱导血管内皮细胞凋亡的作用及其相关分子机制。方法 以体外培养的牛主动脉内皮细胞为模型。分别加入OxLDL200μg/ml(OxLDL组)和OxLDL200μg/ml Rg140μg/ml(Rg1组);对照组不加任何诱导物,培养24小时后观察细胞形态变化,DNA电泳,TUNEL染色检测细胞有无凋亡及凋亡的程度,Western blot分析各组内皮细胞型一氧化氮合酶(endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase,eNOS)的表达水平。结果 (1)对照组和OxLDL组血管内皮细胞凋亡比例分别为8%和41.35%;(2)Rg1组血管内皮细胞凋亡比例为13.29%;(3)OxLDL抑制牛主动脉内皮细胞的eNOS表达水平,此抑制作用具有剂量依赖性。人参皂甙Rg1可使被OxLDL抑制的eNOS表达水平回升。结论 (1)OxLDL能诱导血管内皮细胞凋亡。(2)人参皂甙Rg1能抑制OxLDL诱导的血管内皮细胞凋亡。(3)此作用可能与上调内皮细胞的eNOS水平,减轻细胞的脂质过氧化损伤有关。 相似文献

Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) trees were grown in open top chambers for three years under ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations. The trees were aged 3 y at the beginning of the CO2 exposure, and the effects of the treatment on total stem volume, stem wood biomass, wood quality and wood anatomy were examined at the end of the exposure. The elevated CO2 treatment lead to a 49% and 38% increase in stem biomass and stem wood volume, respectively. However, no significant effects of the elevated CO2 treatment on wood density were observed, neither when green wood density was estimated from stem biomass and stem volume, nor when oven-dry wood density was measured on small wood samples. Under elevated CO2 significantly wider growth rings were observed. The effect of elevated CO2 on growth ring width was primarily the result of an increase in earlywood width. Wood compression strength decreased under elevated CO2 conditions, which could be explained by significantly larger tracheids and the increased earlywood band, that has thinner walls and larger cavities. A significant decrease of the number of resin canals in the third growth ring was observed under the elevated treatment; this might indicate that trees produced and contained less resin, which has implications for disease and pest resistance. So, although wood volume yield in Scots pine increased significantly with elevated CO2 after three years of treatment, wood density remained unchanged, while wood strength decreased. Whilst wood volume and stem biomass production may increase in this major boreal forest tree species, wood quality and resin production might decrease under future elevated CO2 conditions. 相似文献

Abstract. The reasons why some species are resistant to extinction or are better invaders of islands than others remain unexplained. In this study, we test the hypothesis that mammals living on the mainland at higher density than predicted by the density/body mass relationship have a much greater chance to colonize a small island successfully, and/or that they are less likely to become extinct when living on small islands. For this, we used data compiled on mammals from a number of Mediterranean islands. We show a nested pattern for mammals on western Mediterranean islands, which suggests that the distribution of mammals on these islands is not the result of a random process. Using two comparative methods, we show that mammal density on the mainland, corrected for body mass, is negatively correlated with island size. Mammals with a high density compared to the density/mass relationship are the best invaders and/or probably have less chance of going extinct on small islands when population size is small. 相似文献
