Across taxa, extra‐pair mating is widespread among socially monogamous species, but few studies have identified male ornamental traits associated with extra‐pair mating success, and even fewer studies have experimentally manipulated male traits to determine whether they are related directly to paternity. As a consequence, there is little experimental evidence to support the widespread hypothesis that females choose more ornamented males as extra‐pair mates. Here, we conducted an experimental study of the relationship between male plumage colour and fertilization success in tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor), which have one of the highest levels of extra‐pair mating in birds. In this study, we experimentally dulled the bright blue plumage on the back of males (with nontoxic ink markers) early in the breeding season prior to most mating. Compared with control males, dulled males sired fewer extra‐pair young, and, as a result, fewer young overall. Among untreated males, brighter blue males also sired more extra‐pair young, and in paired comparisons, extra‐pair sires had brighter blue plumage than the within‐pair male they cuckolded. These results, together with previous work on tree swallows, suggest that extra‐pair mating behaviour is driven by benefits to both males and females. 相似文献

Phenotypic variation and fluctuating asymmetry in sexually dimorphic feather ornaments in relation to sex and mating system 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Secondary sexual characters have been hypothesized to demonstrate increased phenotypic variation between and within individuals as compared to ordinary morphological traits. We tested whether this was the case by studying phenotypic variation, expressed as the coefficient of variation (CV), and developmental instability, measured as fluctuating asymmetry (FA), in ornamental and non-ornamental traits of 70 bird species with feather ornamentation while controlling for similarity among species due to common descent. Secondary sexual characters differed from ordinary morphological traits by showing large phenotypic CV and FA. This difference can be explained by the different mode of selection operating on each kind of trait: a history of intense directional (ornaments) and stabilizing selection (non-ornaments). Phenotypic variation is reduced in the sex with more intense sexual selection (males), but does not differ among species with different mating systems. The strength of stabilizing selection arising from natural selection is associated with decreased CV (wing CV is smaller than tarsus or tail CVs). We found evidence of FA being reduced in ornamental feathers strongly affected by aerodynamics (tail feathers) compared to other ornaments, but only in females. In conclusion, CV and FA were not related, suggesting mat phenotypic plasticity and developmental instability are independent components of phenotypic variation. 相似文献

We report that a long-distance migrating shorebird, the red knot, makes a complete switch from commonly occurring monoester preen waxes to a much rarer class of higher-molecular-weight diester waxes at the time of take-off to the high arctic breeding grounds. The cold arctic climate would have required a lowering of wax-viscosity, and thus, a shift in the reverse direction. We propose that a sexually selected need for a brilliant plumage has lead to this conter-intuitive temporary shift from monoesters to diester waxes. The difficulty of application of the diester preen waxes under cold conditions would ensure the reliability of the quality-signalling function of this most probably sexually selected trait. 相似文献

Divergence with gene flow is well documented and reveals the influence of ecological adaptation on speciation. Yet, it remains intuitive that gene exchange inhibits speciation in many scenarios, particularly among ecologically similar populations. The influence of gene flow on the divergence of populations facing similar selection pressures has received less empirical attention than scenarios where differentiation is coupled with local environmental adaptation. I used a paired study design to test the influence of genomic divergence and introgression on plumage differentiation between ecologically similar allopatric replacements of Andean cloud forest birds. Through analyses of short‐read genome‐wide sequences from over 160 individuals in 16 codistributed lineages, I found that plumage divergence is associated with deep genetic divergence, implicating a prominent role of geographic isolation in speciation. By contrast, lineages that lack plumage divergence across the same geographic barrier are more recently isolated or exhibit a signature of secondary genetic introgression, indicating a negative relationship between gene flow and divergence in phenotypic traits important to speciation. My results suggest that the evolutionary outcomes of cycles of isolation and divergence in this important theatre of biotic diversification are sensitive to time spent in the absence of gene flow. 相似文献

Plumage odors may function as chemical defenses against ectoparasites in birds. We tested this hypothesis for crested auklets (Aethia cristatella), a species of colonial seabird that emits a very strong citrus-like odor from its plumage. This odorant contains known chemical repellents. We evaluated evidence for chemical defense in this species using two approaches. First, we exposed pigeon lice to the volatiles emitted by freshly plucked plumage and by whole specimens. Louse survivorship was compared between these treatments and two controls. Second, we compared louse abundance on crested auklets versus a closely related congener that nests in close association. Louse survivorship did not differ between crested auklet treatments and controls. Comparison of ectoparasite loads showed that crested auklets had significantly higher louse abundance than least auklets (A. pusilla), even after controlling for body size. Our results failed to support two expectations for chemical defense. Presence of the crested auklet plumage odorant in our experiments did not reduce louse life span. Presence of the aldehyde odorant in nature did not reduce louse abundance on crested auklets. Hence we conclude that the aldehyde odorant is not immediately lethal to lice at natural concentrations in plumage. 相似文献

Travelling on a budget: predictions and ecological evidence for bottlenecks in the annual cycle of long-distance migrants 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Long-distance migration, and the study of the migrants who undertake these journeys, has fascinated generations of biologists. However, many aspects of the annual cycles of these migrants remain a mystery as do many of the driving forces behind the evolution and maintenance of the migrations themselves. In this article we discuss nutritional, energetic, temporal and disease-risk bottlenecks in the annual cycle of long-distance migrants, taking a sandpiper, the red knot Calidris canutus, as a focal species. Red knots have six recognized subspecies each with different migratory routes, well-known patterns of connectivity and contrasting annual cycles. The diversity of red knot annual cycles allows us to discuss the existence and the effects of bottlenecks in a comparative framework. We examine the evidence for bottlenecks focusing on the quality of breeding plumage and the timing of moult as indicators in the six subspecies. In terms of breeding plumage coloration, quality and timing of prealternate body moult (from non-breeding into breeding plumage), the longest migrating knot subspecies, Calidris canutus rogersi and Calidris canutus rufa, show the greatest impact of bottlenecking. The same is true in terms of prebasic body moult (from breeding into non-breeding plumage) which in case of both C. c. rogersi and C. c. rufa overlaps with southward migration and may even commence in the breeding grounds. To close our discussion of bottlenecks in long-distance migrants, we make predictions about how migrants might be impacted via physiological 'trade-offs' throughout the annual cycle, using investment in immune function as an example. We also predict how bottlenecks may affect the distribution of mortality throughout the annual cycle. We hope that this framework will be applicable to other species and types of migrants, thus expanding the comparative database for the future evaluation of seasonal selection pressures and the evolution of annual cycles in long-distance migrants. Furthermore, we hope that this synthesis of recent advancements in the knowledge of red knot annual cycles will prove useful in the ongoing attempts to model annual cycles in migratory birds. 相似文献

Two independent cases of visual mimicry involving snake-eating eagles as mimics and more powerful bird-eating hawks as models are proposed. One pair of species is formed by the sympatric West African Serpent-eagle Dryotriorchis spectabilis and Cassin's Hawk Eagle Spizaetus africanus (= Aquila africana ), inhabiting the tropical forests of the African Gulf of Guinea. The second case involves the Madagascar Serpent-eagle Eutriorchis astur and the Madagascar Goshawk Accipiter henstii , both sympatric and endemics of forests in Madagascar. Similarity in plumage colour and pattern as well as in body size and proportions are remarkable in both cases. The species mimicry pairs are in both cases not closely related phylogenetically and greatly differ in diet, making it unlikely that common ancestry or shared foraging strategies explain the resemblance in plumage coloration and pattern. Mimicry may have evolved because the mimic serpent-eagles obtain (the following hypotheses are not mutually exclusive): (1) a foraging advantage by deceiving their snake prey as they may not flee from bird-eating raptors such as the models, (2) a lowered predation or harassment by the models or other predators, and/or (3) reduced mobbing by small birds, which tend to avoid bird-eating raptors. Alternatively, the similarities in plumage described here may be the result of random convergence due to constraints in the evolution of plumage colours and patterns in diurnal raptors. 相似文献

In positive assortative mating, individuals of similar phenotypemate together more frequently than expected by chance. Assortativemating by a variety of qualities, including ornamentation, iswell documented in birds. Studies of assortative mating by ornamentshave focused on single, highly conspicuous ornaments, but manyspecies of birds possess multiple ornaments in both sexes. Wecompared ornament expressions between mates of northern cardinals(Cardinalis cardinalis) to determine if assortative mating occurredby one or more of the four ornaments displayed by both sexes. All cardinals possess tall head crests and red-orange bills. In addition, males have black face masks and entirely red bodyplumage, whereas females have blackish face masks and red underwingcoverts. We predicted that cardinals mate assortatively by plumagecolor because red plumage expression has been shown to indicatequality in both sexes. We found that cardinals mate assortativelyby plumage and bill color, the two ornaments colored by carotenoidpigments, but not by mask expression or crest length. Whetherthis mating pattern arises by mutual mate choice or intrasexualselection is not known. 相似文献

One explanation for hybridization between species is the fitness benefits it occasionally confers to the hybridizing individuals. This explanation is possible in species that have evolved alternative male reproductive tactics: individuals with inferior tactics might be more prone to hybridization provided it increases their reproductive success and fitness. Here we experimentally tested whether the propensity of hybridization in the wild depends on male reproductive tactic in Calopteryx splendens damselflies. Counter to our expectation, it was males adopting the superior reproductive tactic (territoriality) that had greatest propensity to hybridize than males adopting the inferior tactics (sneakers and floaters). Moreover, among the territorial males, the most ornamented males had greatest propensity to hybridize whereas the pattern was reversed in the sneaker males. Our results suggest that there is fluctuating selection on male mate discrimination against heterospecific females depending on both ornament size and the male’s reproductive tactic. 相似文献
