Questions

Can drainage ditches in agricultural marsh grassland provide a suitable habitat for the persistence of fen meadow species? How does the ditch margin vegetation develop as a function of regular dredging? Is ornithologically oriented management also beneficial for plant biodiversity?

Location

Riparian marshes, Eider‐Treene‐Sorge lowland, Schleswig‐Holstein, Germany.

Methods

We performed vegetation surveys of drainage ditches along with their water body, slope and margin structures annually for 3 years. The data were analysed with respect to date and means of ditch dredging. In addition, we recorded vegetation of the surrounding agricultural grassland, measured nutrient status of the soil and the water body and sampled seed bank of the ditch slopes. We used ANOVA and multivariate methods to describe the development of the ditch vegetation and the persistence of target meadow species.

Results

Vegetation re‐development of ditch margins proceeds quite rapidly after disturbance from dredging. Dominance of mudbank species was observed only in the first year, followed by an increase of reed species and reduction of phytodiversity. Target species of wet meadow communities reach highest abundance in the second and third year and build a significant seed bank before being suppressed by reeds.

Conclusions

In heavily eutrophicated, intensively used marsh grassland, regularly disturbed ditch margins are important secondary habitats for pioneer and subdominant wetland species, which have nearly disappeared in a larger area. Current management cycles of ditch dredging every 3–4 years comply with the successional development, allowing the mudbank and wet meadow species to persist in the vegetation and seed bank. In contrast to the frequency, the form of dredging (ditch profile), which is crucial for bird protection, plays a minor role for plants. We recommend moderate disturbance (mowing of ditch margins) to suppress strong competitors in the years between dredging for additional support to target plant species.  相似文献

The response of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex. Steudel to zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) was studied separately in two hydroponic tests, during a three weeks experiment. The effects on ecophysiology and biomass partitioning were evaluated during the metal treatments and at the recovery, and total metal content and accumulation capacity in different plant organs were assessed. Zn and Pb had different effects on the overall measured parameters, highlighting different mechanism of action. In particular, Zn concentration was higher in roots and, being a micronutrient, it was translocated into leaves, producing a reduction of assimilation rate, stomatal conductance (–71.9 and –81.3% respect to the control plant respectively), and a strong down regulation of photosystems functionality both at PSII and PSI level. Otherwise, Pb was accumulated mainly in the more lignified tissue such as rhizomes, with slightly effect on gas exchange. Chlorophyll a fluorescence highlighted that Pb inhibits the electron transfer process at the PSI donor side, without recovery after the removal of the metal stress. Despite these physiological limitations, P. australis showed a high capacity to accumulate both metals, and only slight reduction of biomass, being therefore a suitable species for phytoremediation interventions.  相似文献

Water deficit stress can reduce the reproductive performance of galling insects, but has not previously been studied in the context of mass-rearing of a galling agent on a perennial grass. The effects of water deficit were examined for the wasp Tetramesa romana Walker (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae), released in the Lower Rio Grande Basin of Texas and Mexico in 2009 and in northern California in 2010 for control of giant reed (Arundo donax (L)) (Poaceae). In one study, water deficit was imposed for 7–10 weeks during gall maturation, ending when adult progeny began to emerge. Aboveground water content was reduced by 1.7% and culm height by 41% in pots receiving one-fourth of normal watering (soil saturation), indicating that water deficit stress occurred. Water deficit did not affect proportion of culms successfully galled or number of progeny produced. However, time to first exit hole appearance was 2–4 days longer and adult wasp generation time 5–7 days longer on galls on water deficit–stressed compared to control culms, thereby reducing the wasp's intrinsic rate of increase. Water deficit imposed only during parent wasp oviposition had no effect on galling success or reproduction. Water deficit thus has a negative effect on rearing by delaying adult emergence and reducing the rate of population increase, even without affecting adult fertility. Mass-rearing should involve well-watered plants, and variable drought conditions in the field should be considered when evaluating T. romana establishment and impact.  相似文献

In a broad range of species—including humans—it has been demonstrated that telomere length declines throughout life and that it may be involved in cell and organismal senescence. This potential link to ageing and thus to fitness has triggered recent interest in understanding how variation in telomere length is inherited and maintained. However, previous studies suffer from two main drawbacks that limit the possibility of understanding the relative importance of genetic, parental and environmental influences on telomere length variation. These studies have been based on (i) telomere lengths measured at different time points in different individuals, despite the fact that telomere length changes over life, and (ii) parent–offspring regression techniques, which do not enable differentiation between genetic and parental components of inheritance. To overcome these drawbacks, in our study of a songbird, the great reed warbler, we have analysed telomere length measured early in life in both parents and offspring and applied statistical models (so-called ‘animal models'') that are based on long-term pedigree data. Our results showed a significant heritability of telomere length on the maternal but not on the paternal side, and that the mother''s age was positively correlated with their offspring''s telomere length. Furthermore, the pedigree-based analyses revealed a significant heritability and an equally large maternal effect. Our study demonstrates strong maternal influence on telomere length and future studies now need to elucidate possible underlying factors, including which types of maternal effects are involved.  相似文献

Embryogenic cultures of the common reed [Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex. Steud.] were induced on Murashige and Skoog (1962)-based medium with 2% (w/v) sucrose, B5 vitamins and 4.5 μM 2,4-dichlorphenoxyacetic acid. Four independent culture lines, two initiated from stem nodes and two from roots, were established. These cultures underwent somatic embryogenesis. In one line of stem node origin, the somatic embryos germinated and developed into plants, following transfer of embryogenic cultures to Murashige and Skoog (1962)-based medium lacking growth regulators, with 108 ± 17 plants being recovered per 100 mg fresh weight of culture. In other lines, the somatic embryos developed roots, but not shoots. Shoot regeneration via somatic embryogenesis offers potential as anin vitro system for physiological studies, including assessments of the response of common reed to environmental pollutants. Reed stands in Germany and Europe were investigatedwith respect to their genetic diversity by means ofRandom Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) via thePolymerase Chain Reaction (PCR-fingerprinting).Different types of clonal distribution could bedistinguished: monoclonal reed stands and polyclonalreed stands, and among the latter, stands with low orhigh numbers of different clones as well as standswith mosaic-like coexisting or intermingling clones.Furthermore, clonal distribution and the expansion ofdifferent clones was observed within a newlydeveloping reed population. The findings appear tosupport a model of colonization postulating thatpopulations initiated by seeds are initiallygenetically diverse, but over time become dominated byone or a few clones adapted to the prevailing siteconditions. Thus, low genetic diversity seems to bethe result of a natural selection process. Clonaldiversity within a reed population and the type ofclonal distribution are discussed with regard to theirimportance for the reed stand's ability to adapt tochanging site conditions and eventually for itssurvival or die-back.  相似文献

分布于甘肃省河西走廊的两种不同生态型芦苇-水生芦苇(水芦,生长在深约1m的水滩里)和沙丘芦苇(沙芦,生长在高约5m的沙丘上)在其离体叶绿体的光化学活性上表现为前者高于后者。其中,沙芦全链电子传递速率及光系统Ⅱ(PSⅡ)电子传递速率明显低于水芦,而光系统Ⅰ(PSⅠ)电子传递速率却与水芦接近。沙芦叶片和叶绿体中抗氧化酶活性及叶片抗坏血酸含量均高于水芦。综合结果表明,喜水植物芦苇登陆后,在自然选择压力下,为适应长期的自然干旱胁迫环境,其抗氧保护系统在保护PSⅠ免受水分胁迫诱导的氧化伤害中可能发挥着重要作用。  相似文献

1990~1992年对射阳海涂芦苇的芦毒蛾、条锹额夜蛾、宫苍仁蚧以及芦苇褐斑病和芦苇叶锈病的主要生物学和生态学特点进行了观察研究,提出了以生态控制为基础的综合防治体系。防治实践表明,这一体系是可行的,具有良好的经济效益和生态效益。  相似文献
