Arundo donax is a tall perennial reed. Once established, it spreads by producing new shoots (ramets) from rhizomes. We performed two separate experiments to test the hypotheses that temperature (7, 8, 14, 16, or 20 °C) and combinations of temperature and nitrate concentration (0, 0.3, 0.6,1.2, 2.4, 3.6, 4.8, and 6.0 mg/l nitrate) regulated the initiation of ramet production. No ramets emerged from rhizome sections at 7 or 8 °C, but ramets emerged at 14, 16, and 20 °C. Neither time to ramet emergence nor the number of ramets that emerged was influenced by nitrate level in the watering solution. We used the above results in combination with ramet emergence data from plants grown outdoors at Davis, California to develop degree-day equations for three separate ramet cohorts. When compared to ramet emergence from different plants in different years, there was very good agreement between predicted and actual ramet emergence indicating that these equations provide a realistic representation of processes involved in ramet emergence. This is an important step in developing integrated management plans for this species.  相似文献

We determined leaf and stem strength for Arundo donax from plants grown in different geographic areas and at different times within their growing cycle. Mean leaf strength for plants collected within California was 1.72 Newtons (N) and ranged from 0.36 to 6.32 N, based on 1170 individual determinations. For leaves collected from 30 plants within four states between July 11 and 20, 2007, mean leaf strength was 1.58 N based on 936 determinations. Values ranged from 0.24 to 4.90 N. Overall, leaf strength showed statistically significant changes depending on the sampling date, sampling location, type of leaf sampled, and position within the leaf where the measurement was taken. In general leaf strength was greater near the base of the leaf and decreased with distance away from the base; leaf strength changed as the growing season progressed; and first year leaves had leaf strength values about 25% greater than leaves produced on stems >1-year old. This represents two of the three age categories of leaves which may be present on giant reed at any one time. Stem strength and stem wall thickness were strongly correlated (Kendall's Tau b = 0.92, P < 0.0001, N = 26). Linear regression indicated that mean stem strength decreased by approximately 6.8% (95% confidence limits 5.8-7.7%) from one node to the successive node progressing from the stem base to the shoot tip. These results imply that the ability of biological control agents to damage A. donax leaves may not be the same across the locations this plant occurs or at all times during the growing season within a given location.  相似文献

The impedance at frequencies of 1-1000 kHz and dynamic bending storage modulus measured by the vibrating reed method were compared for potato tuber tissue, which had been processed by various methods. Raw potato tuber tissue strips were either heated for 30 min up to 100°C or frozen-thawed. Some samples were osmotically dehydrated in a mannitol solution up to a concentration of 0.7 mol/l. The electrical reactance correlated well with the storage modulus of heated or frozen-thawed potato tissues, but not with the storage modulus of the mannitol-treated tissue. The storage modulus appeared to be strongly dependent on the turgor pressure of the cells which was drastically decreased by the heating, freezing-thawing, and osmotic treatments. The electrical properties reflect the cell integrity, and a large difference was observed between the change in impedance after heating or freezing-thawing, and that after the osmotic treatment. A significant change in the electric properties was also observed for a starch suspension at the gelatinization temperature. However, the contribution due to gelatinization did not appear to play an important role in the change of electrical properties of potato tissue by heating.  相似文献

In tidal wetlands of the eastern United States, buried seeds of the non-native haplotype of Phragmites australis may be a source of propagules for re-establishment after eradication efforts but factors controlling the development and expression of seed banks in non-native Phragmites stands have not been examined. We sampled surface soil at four Chesapeake Bay brackish tidal wetlands dominated by the non-native (European) haplotype M of Phragmites and used the seedling emergence method to quantity species of seedlings emerging under flooded and non-flooded soil conditions. Within each subestuary, one site was dominated by Phragmites that produced viable seeds (high viability) and the other by Phragmites that did not (low viability). We also described standing vegetation in plots, measured soil salinity, analyzed soil characteristics, and described surrounding land cover. Based on number of emerging seedlings, we found that 284 and 698 Phragmites seeds m−2 occurred at the two high-viability sites, which was significantly higher than seed densities at the low-viability sites (10 seeds m−2), and greater than densities reported elsewhere. We also found that emergence of Phragmites seedlings from soil samples was prevented by continuous flooding of 3.5 cm of standing water, suggesting that colonization of deep water areas is due to vegetative clonal expansion from Phragmites in adjacent higher elevations. The density of Phragmites seeds was not related to soil salinity or abundance of other species in the seed bank or vegetation, but instead was positively related to greater wave energy disturbance (much longer fetch and more open water) and lower area of wetlands nearby. The seed bank was more species-rich (15-22 species observed) than standing vegetation (3-15 species) at all sites, meaning that the dominance of Phragmites in vegetation does not prevent the development of a diverse seed bank and implying that a species-rich community may establish rapidly following control efforts. Based on these results and our findings in related studies, we postulate that wave energy disturbance generates repeated opportunities for seedling recruitment by Phragmites, which creates stands of Phragmites with higher genotypic diversity. In turn, genetically diverse stands favor greater cross-pollination and production of viable seed. These findings suggest that, in North America, targeting control efforts on non-native Phragmites patches in areas of higher exposure to wave energy may be more effective in reducing source populations than efforts in more protected locations.  相似文献

The degradation kinetics of the principal polysaccharides (cellulose and xylan) of the agro-fibre crop Arundo donax L. (giant reed) during ethanol–alkali delignification is reported. Based on the properties of a multi-component reaction system, the degradation kinetics of both polysaccharides was accurately described in terms of two simultaneous irreversible first-order reactions corresponding to removal of two kinetically homogeneous fractions. The moderate cellulose losses during pulping (about 4.5%) result mainly from the removal of the more reactive cellulose fraction, that accounted for 4% of initial cellulose. The bulk of the cellulose (96%) degrades slowly with three orders lower rate with pulping progress. The apparent activation energy of cellulose fractions degradation was estimated as 105.2 and 106.5 kJ mol−1, respectively. Substantial loss of xylan during pulping (about 55%, as a homoxylan) is caused by fast removal of the first very reactive fraction, covering about 48% of total xylan. The degradation rate of the second xylan fraction is only one order higher of the bulk cellulose degradation. The activation energy of xylan fractions degradation was found as 74.4 and 140.9 kJ mol−1, respectively.  相似文献

Biofuels offer one method for decreasing emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from fossil fuels, thus helping to meet UK and EU targets for mitigating climate change. They also provide a rational option for land use within the EU that could be economically viable, provided that an appropriate financial and policy environment is developed. If 80% of current set‐aside land in the UK were used for production of biomass crops for electricity generation, about 3% of current UK electricity demand could be met from this source. Considering possibilities for increasing yields and land area devoted to such crops over the coming decades, this could possibly rise to 12%. These estimates exclude consideration of developments in electricity generation which should increase the efficiency of conversion. Also, the use of combined heat and power units at local level (e.g. on farms or in rural communities) gives additional energy saving. Dedicated biomass crops such as willow, poplar, miscanthus, switchgrass or reed canary grass are perennials: in comparison with annual arable crops they would be expected to deliver additional environmental benefits. The elimination of annual cultivation should give a more stable environment, beneficial for farmland biodiversity. Some increase in soil organic matter content is likely, leading to some sequestration of carbon in soil and long‐term improvements in soil quality. The impact on water quality may be positive as nitrate losses are small and a similar trend is expected for phosphate and pesticides. However, these crops may well use more water than arable crops so their impact on water resources could be negative – an issue for further research. Agricultural land can also be used to produce liquid fuels for use in transport. At present biodiesel can be produced from oilseed rape and ethanol from either sucrose in sugar beet or cellulose from virtually any plant material. In the short‐term, liquid biofuels are an easy option as they require little change to either agriculture or transport infrastructure. However, their benefits for CO2 emissions are much less than for biomass used for generating electricity. It is therefore necessary to debate the priorities for land use in this context.  相似文献

利用两相法纯化质膜微囊,研究了分布于西北沙漠地区的两种生态型芦苇(Phragmites communis Trin.)(水生芦苇和重度盐化草甸芦苇,分别简称为水芦和盐芦)叶片质膜H -ATPase的部分性质。结果显示,与水芦相比,盐芦质膜H -ATPase的ATP水解活性升高,Km值由1.27 mmol/L降至0.30 mmol/L,但Vmax没有显著差异。并且该酶活性对温度的敏感性和pH谱型也发生了变化。以对硝基苯磷酸盐为底物,低浓度时盐芦的质膜H -ATPase水解活性高于水芦,高浓度时则没有差异。Km在水芦和盐芦中分别为3.61 mmol/L和1.92 mmol/L,但Vmax在两种生态型中没有差异。钒酸盐抑制实验表明,两种生态型的质膜H -ATPase磷酸-酶区的催化性质不同。胰酶对质膜H -ATPase活性的活化谱型也存在差异,说明该酶C末端的结构或性质发生了变化。此外,与水芦相比,盐芦质膜H -ATPase的质子泵活性及与水解活性的耦联程度也升高了。以上结果说明,当芦苇从水生环境向盐渍环境过渡时,质膜H -ATPase的催化性质发生了变化,这些变化可能是由酶结构的修饰和不同的同工酶谱引起的。H -ATPase催化性质的变化可能是对盐渍生境的适应性反应。  相似文献

Robustness of linkage maps in natural populations: a simulation study   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In a number of long-term individual-based studies of vertebrate populations, the genealogical relationships between individuals have been established with molecular markers. As a result, it is possible to construct genetic linkage maps of these study populations by examining the co-segregation of markers through the pedigree. There are now four free-living vertebrate study populations for whom linkage maps have been built. In this study, simulation was used to investigate whether these linkage maps are likely to be accurate. In all four populations, the probability of assigning markers to the correct chromosome is high and framework maps are generally inferred correctly. However, genotyping error can result in incorrect maps being built with very strong statistical support over the correct order. Future applications of linkage maps of natural populations are discussed.  相似文献
