Phylogenetic systematics (cladistics) is a theory of phylogeny reconstruction and classification widely used in zoology. Taxa are grouped hierarchically by the sharing of derived (advanced) characters. The information is expressed in a cladogram, a best estimate of a phylogeny. Plant systematists generally use a phenetic system, grouping taxa on overall similarity which results in many groups being formed, at least in part, on the basis of shared primitive characters.
The methods of phylogenetic systematics are used to create a preliminary cladogram of land plants. The current classification of land plants is criticized for its inclusion of many groups which are not monophyletic.
Objections to the use of phylogenetic systematics in botany, apparent convergences within major groups and frequent hybridization, are shown to be invalid. It is concluded that cladistic analysis presents the best estimate of die natural hierarchy of organisms, and should be adopted by plant systematists in their assessment of plant interrelationships.  相似文献

BamHI fragments of the Bacillus brevis var. GB plasmid pAD1 have been cloned in Escherichia coli HB101 using pBR322 plasmid as a vector. The analysis of the recombinant plasmids showed that additional PstI sites had appeared in cloned fragments of pAD1. Methylation of the recombinant plasmids in vitro by enzymes from B. brevis GB cells blocks cleavage at these additional PstI sites of cloned pAD1 fragments and at the PstI site of pBR322. Among DNA methylases of B. brevis GB, the cytosine DNA methylase M . BbvI is the most likely agent modifying the recognition sequences of PstI. The methylase can modify cytosine residues in PstI or PvuII sites if these recognition sequences are linked to G at 5'- or to C at 3'-termini. In particular, in vitro methylation of the SV40 DNA by B. brevis GB methylases protects one of the two PstI sites and two of the three PvuII sites. The described effect of the protection of the specific PstI and PvuII sites may be used for physical mapping of genomes and DNA cloning.  相似文献

At 1197 m in the French Massif Central, lake Pavin has a volcanic origin. It is a meromictic lake of 44 ha area and 98 meters depth.Zooplancton samples (250 liters) were collected bimonthly with a water pump from May 1973 to April 1974 at six depths from surface to 20 meters.Countings were made to study the dynamics of two Cladocera: (Daphnia longispina and Ceriodaphnia quadrangula), two copepode populations, the calanoide Acanthodiaptomus denticornis and the cyclopoide Cyclops abyssorum. For the last two species, males, females, ovigerous females, Nauplius larvae and each of the five copepodite stages were differentiated.If Cladocera have a period of development limited from June to September for Ceriodaphnia and from June to December for Daphnia, copepods are presents all around the year with two principals periods of reproduction. The first during spring (March–April), the second during fall (October–November). If this second generation presents an important development for Cyclops abyssorum, that is not the same for Acanthodiaptomus denticornis, in which species nauplius larvae died in winter. The synthetical mathematical model realized by Principal Components Analysis illustrates the relationships between phyto-and zooplancton and bio-physico-chemicals parameters and specially the fact that, in this lake, the highest values of phytoplanctonic primary production and activity coefficient (Production/Standing crop) are found when herbivorous zooplancton presents the more important development and nutrients their lowest concentrations.

Two nuclear polyhedrosis viruses from the cabbage moth Mamestra brassicae found in two geographical areas in Europe have been characterized and compared. These two virus isolates have similar biological activities and have the same host range. The two M. brassicae nuclear polyhedrosis viruses can be distinguished by restriction endonuclease analysis of their DNA. They appear to be distinct but related virus strains.  相似文献

Following a survey of the problems associated with the comparative study of measures of physique in domesticated and laboratory animals, techniques were developed for the measurement of body build in the adult albino laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus). They involved anesthetisation of the animals and the use of calipers and a simple apparatus devised for the purpose. The 17 measures taken on 100 rats, 50 of each sex, are detailed and the reasons for excluding others given. Intercorrelations of all the measures and their reliability co-efficients, which were judged satisfactory, are presented. The tables of intercorrelations, one for each sex, were factor analysed separately, and rotations to simple structure performed. Two factors were identified, one having factor saturations on measures of body length and the other similarly defining body width. This pattern was similar for the two sexes and a single index of body build was therefore proposed in which the length of the rear foot is divided by the width of the shoulder girdle and multiplied by 100 to avoid decimals. The use of the index in other investigations is mentioned.  相似文献

Summary Cells possess extraordinary powers to organize their molecular processes not only to maintain a cell in a given steady state but also to recognize that state during differentiation. Regulation of these organizational forces appears to be under the control of chemical factors, and a hormonal concept of regulation has evolved. Hormones have been considered to act by reacting with a specific target site. This may be part of their mode of action, but I would like to suggest that a hormone enters and becomes part of a total molecular resonance system. In so doing, the entire molecular system of the cell is modified. Of the known plant hormones, the cytokinins, because of their role in experimentally induced cell division and differentiation, serve as a probe of hormonal involvement in differentiation. Cultured somatic cells of tobacco plants can be induced to undergo differentiation by addition of cytokinin and auxin to the medium. Studies of the cytokinin hormones show a series of diverse molecular involvements. The archetype cytokinin, N6-(Δ2-isopentenyl) adenosine (i6Ado), occurs in some molecular species of tRNA where it plays a vital role in the codon-anticodon interaction of tRNA and m-RNA. i6Ado under-goes extensive metabolism in the tobacco tissue. It is either degraded to adenosine or converted to derivatives that possess biological activity. It is perhaps, therefore, more correct to consider the hormone function as being derived from this total metabolic web. The normal somatic cells of tobacco cultures spontaneously change occasionally into an autonomous form that requires no external growth factors. This line of cells synthesizes i6Ado. The metabolic web of the hormone-dependent strain can be perturbed by added auxin but such is not the case in the autonomous strain. These data provide some insight into the altered state of cytokinin activity in which a cell line changes into an autonomous form. Curiously, in become independent of the requirement for exogenous cytokinin, the autonomous tissue becomes sensitive to added cytokinin. i6Ado also inhibits the growth of lines of mammalian cancer cells grown in culture. Summary The vegetation of cultivated, fallow and ‘old’ fields of Scotland County, N.C. was both randomly and subjectively sampled throughout the growing season of 1973. Relevés were placed in each of the above management units, and the data collected in this relevé analysis were sorted into phytosociological charts, with the aid of the digital computer. Weed associations delimited in the charts reflected the importance of edaphic factors, time (aspect), and man's agricultural activities as causal factors in the determination of characteristic assemblages of weeds. Several character and differential species were denoted, in a tentative classification of the weed associations. The cultivated and fallow stands in the spring aspect were noted to be dominated by a group of spring annuals. Summer annuals were more prevalent in homologous situations in the summer. It was determined that perennials, appearing mainly as seedlings in cultivated and fallow fields, attained dominance in ‘old’ fields, one to five years in age. Within each of the major spheres of management, and in each season, associations of weeds mainly reflected differences in edaphic factors. Many character species were noted to maintain affinities to an assortment of soil types that ranged from moist loams to xeric, sterile sands. A study of roadsides, hedgerows, field margins and other ecotonal areas inhabited by weeds was carried throughout the growing season of 1973, also. Species presence was documented in each of these habitat types and reported in Sharp (1974). The weed flora of Scotland County was found to be rich in species. A total of 506 species representing 248 genera and 80 families were encountered throughout the study. Of the total number of species listed, approximately 25 percent were of foreign origin, and 28 percent represented additions to the flora of Scotland County. This paper is the short version of a masters thesis for the Department of Botany, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
