Abstract We explain how species accumulation curves are influenced by species richness (total number of species), relative abundance and diversity using computer‐generated simulations. Species richness defines the boundary of the horizontal asymptote value for a species accumulation curve, and the shape of the curve is influenced by both relative abundance and diversity. Simulations with a high proportion of rare species and a few abundant species have a species accumulation curve with a low ‘shoulder’ (inflection point on the ordinate axis) and a long upward slope to the asymptote. Simulations with a high proportion of relatively abundant species have a steeply rising initial slope to the species accumulation curve and plateau early. Diversity (as measured by Simpson's and Shannon–Weaver indices) for simulations is positively correlated with the initial slope of the species accumulation curve. Species accumulation curves cross when one simulation has a high proportion of both rare and abundant species compared with another that has a more even distribution of abundance among species.  相似文献

0+ perch predation on 0+ bream: a case study in a eutrophic gravel pit lake   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
SUMMARY 1. We studied the population dynamics of 0+ fish in a eutrophic gravel pit lake in which predation of 0+ Eurasian perch on other 0+ fish was suspected to influence perch growth and the structure of the fish community, with effects on the lake food web. 2. The adult fish community was dominated by piscivorous species, especially perch, and the 0+ fish community was dominated by perch and bream. Bream grew to a total length of 80 mm between May and the end of August, gradually decreased in numbers during the summer, and completely disappeared in autumn. Stomach analysis revealed that 0+ perch ≥28 mm fed on 0+ bream. 3. The initially unimodal cohort of 0+ perch gradually broadened and became bimodal by the end of July. Fish of the larger, piscivorous cohort grew faster (1.4 mm day?1) than the smaller, zooplankton‐consuming fish (0.6 mm day?1). Although individuals of both cohorts later consumed zooplankton and grew at similar rates (0.5 mm day?1), only perch of the large cohort (mean TL 125 mm) were found by mid‐October. Intraspecific competition for food or cannibalism of older perch may have contributed to the disappearance of the smaller perch. 4. Early piscivory of the fast‐growing 0+ perch apparently resulted in the disappearance of 0+ bream by the end of the growing season and precocious maturation of male perch. In contrast to findings in other studies, these large 0+ perch thus avoided the juvenile bottleneck by switching to piscivory early during their ontogenetic development. 5. The observations of this study suggest that early piscivory of 0+ perch can have a long‐lasting impact on fish communities in eutrophic lakes, particularly if prey fish are abundant and the structural complexity of the lake is low. Furthermore, early piscivory of 0+ perch may help prevent the expected increase in 0+ cyprinids following reduction of adult cyprinids, which is considered important to ensure the long‐term success of biomanipulation experiments.  相似文献

用雌、雄激素受体的多克隆抗体对不同发育时期的文昌鱼神经系统和哈氏窝进行免疫识别。结果显示,雌、雄激素受体免疫阳性识别发生在文昌鱼端脑和中脑的中部与后部,以及神经管的背面和中央,后脑则为免疫阴性反应。两种激素受体免疫阳性物多数分布在神经细胞核内及其神经纤维,少数在胞质、雌、雄激素受体免疫阳性识别还出现在文昌鱼哈氏窝基部的上皮细胞核内或胞质中。雌、雄激素受体在文昌鱼神经系统和哈氏窝的免疫识别部位与脊椎运行相类似。研究表明,性类固醇激素像在脊椎动物中那样,可对文昌鱼脑和哈氏窝进行反馈调节。  相似文献

The decrease in estrogen level that follows the onset ofmenopause causes rapid bone loss, resulting in osteoporosis.However, the mechanism remains unclear, especially concerningthe regulation of bone-resorbing osteoclasts. Here we analyzedthe function of estrogen and its receptor in matureosteoclasts. We found that estrogen directly inhibitedbone-resorption by purified rabbit mature-osteoclasts.Moreover, using a RT-PCR technique, we report that nuclearestrogen receptor (ER) but not ER is expressed in mature osteoclasts. The antisense oligodeoxynucleotide for ER inhibited the reductionin osteoclastic bone-resorbing activity caused by estrogen. We conclude that in part estrogen directly inhibits the bone-resorbing activity of mature osteoclasts through the ER.  相似文献

An outdoor experiment was conducted to study the competitionbetween Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) and Methanogenic Archaea (MA) in anaerobictreatment phase of tannery wastewater treatment in pilot-scale Advanced FacultativePond (AFP). The relative electron flow towards sulphate reduction was higher (59–83%) than towardsmethanogenesis (17–41%), although the COD recovery within thereactor varied between 15 and 90%. The results also demonstrated that the flow of electrons towards SRBincreased with increase of the sulphate concentration and decrease of the COD : SO4 = ratio.  相似文献

Perforation plates are reported in aerial and subaerial axes of Psilotum nudum and in aerial axes of Tmesipteris obliqua. In Psilotum, both perforations lacking pit membranes and perforations with pit membrane remnants were observed. Perforation plates in Psilotum may consist wholly of one type or the other. In Tmespteris, perforations have threadlike pit membranes or consist of porose pit membranes. Wide perforations alternating with narrow pits, a conformation observed in various ferns, were observed in Psilotum (subaerial axes). In Psilotum, perforations are more common in metaxylem than in protoxylem; perforations in protoxylem consist of primary wall areas containing small circular porosities or relatively large circular to oval perforations. There are no modifications in the secondary wall framework of protoxylem or metaxylem in Psilotum or Tmesipteris that would permit one to distinguish presence of perforations or perforation plates with light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is required for demonstration of porose walls or perforations. The tracheary elements of the Psilotaceae studied have no features not also observed in other ferns with SEM.  相似文献

The mechanisms underlying the engulfment of apoptotic corpses, which is involved in development, cellular homeostasis, and autoimmunity, remain largely unknown in mammals. MEGF10 is a mammalian ortholog of nematode CED-1, a transmembrane protein involved in engulfment of apoptotic corpses. MEGF10-expressing cells display an irregular, mosaic-like pattern of MEGF10, causing cells to tightly adhere to coated glass dishes. This restricted cell motility caused cells to adopt a flat appearance. In the present study, we observed that these cells formed unusually large vacuoles, the formation of which we linked to the cytoplasmic domain of MEGF10. While investigating the signaling pathway and trafficking of MEGF10, we identified an interaction between MEGF10 and clathrin assembly protein complex 2 medium chain (AP50), a component of clathrin-coated pits. In cells co-expressing MEGF10 and AP50, MEGF10 and AP50 colocalized and mirrored the adhesion pattern of MEGF10. LC-MS/MS and immunoblot analyses revealed that the MEGF10 associated with AP2 alpha and beta subunits in addition to associating with AP50 and beta-actin, and that MEGF10 was ubiquitinated and tyrosine phosphorylated. Moreover, we observed that MEGF10 mRNA expression is primarily restricted to the brain, with robust expression in the stellate cells of the cerebellum. Elucidating the trafficking and regulatory machinery of MEGF10 will guide us in having a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved in clearing apoptotic cells.  相似文献

Background and Aims The efficiency and safety functions of xylem hydraulics are strongly dependent on the pits that connect the xylem vessels. However, little is known about their biochemical composition and thus about their hydraulic properties. In this study, the distribution of the epitopes of different wall components (cellulose, hemicelluloses, pectins and lignins) was analysed in intervessel pits of hybrid poplar (Populus tremula × alba).Methods Immunogold labelling with transmission electron microscopy was carried out with a set of antibodies raised against different epitopes for each wall polysaccharide type and for lignins. Analyses were performed on both immature and mature vessels. The effect of sap ionic strength on xylem conductance was also tested.Key Results In mature vessels, the pit membrane (PM) was composed of crystalline cellulose and lignins. None of the hemicellulose epitopes were found in the PM. Pectin epitopes in mature vessels were highly concentrated in the annulus, a restricted area of the PM, whereas they were initially found in the whole PM in immature vessels. The pit border also showed a specific labelling pattern, with higher cellulose labelling compared with the secondary wall of the vessel. Ion-mediated variation of 24 % was found for hydraulic conductance.Conclusions Cellulose microfibrils, lignins and annulus-restricted pectins have different physicochemical properties (rigidity, hydrophobicity, porosity) that have different effects on the hydraulic functions of the PM, and these influence both the hydraulic efficiency and vulnerability to cavitation of the pits, including ion-mediated control of hydraulic conductance. Impregnation of the cellulose microfibrils of the PM with lignins, which have low wettability, may result in lower cavitation pressure for a given pore size and thus help to explain the vulnerability of this species to cavitation.  相似文献
