The influence of irradiance, photoperiod and temperature was determined for the growth kinetics of the diatoms Aulacoseira subarctica, Stephanodiscus astraea and Stephanodiscus hantzschii and the results compared with those of cyanobacteria. Irradiance and photoperiod relationships were qualitatively similar to those for cyanobacteria in that: (1) growth rate (K) was proportionally greater under short photoperiods, with ratios of K under continuous light to K under 3:21 light:dark (LD) cycles of 1·50, 1·80 and 2·96 for A. subarctica, S. astraea and S. hantzschii respectively; (2) at subsaturating irradiances, K was proportional to irradiance and independent of temperature with a negligible predicted maintenance growth rate requirement. Apparent growth efficiencies (GE) at subsaturating irradiances were 0·26±0·03, 0·42±0·03 and 0·50±0·03 divisions mol-1m2 for A. subarctica, S. astraea and S. hantzschii with the values for Stephanodiscus species comparable to values for Oscillatoria species. Under a 3:21 LD cycle at 4 °C, light-saturated growth rates were 0·066±0·004, 0·197±0·033 and 0·285±0·018 divisions day-1 for A. subarctica, S. astraea and S. hantzschii. S. hantzschii growth rate at 4 °C exceeded maximum Oscillatoria growth rates at 23 °C and the S. astraea growth rate at 4 °C was equivalent to O. agardhii growth rate at 20 °C. Temperature increases above 4 °C gave Q10 values between 4 °C and 12 °C of 3·68, 2·39 and 1·92 for A. subarctica, S. astraea and S. hantzschii, but higher temperatures resulted in minor increases in K. S. astraea growth rate peaked at 16 °C, declining sharply at higher temperatures. February to March in situ growth rates in Lough Neagh, mean temperature 4·3 °C, showed that the A. subarctica in situ K of 0·058 divisions day-1 was close to the laboratory K at 4 °C, but that S. astraea in situ K of 0·101 divisions day-1 was lower than the laboratory K at 4 °C. 相似文献

An account is given of the phytoplankton in four relatively fast-flowing rivers in north-east England associated with a water transfer scheme. The total number of live cells (or units) ranged from 2 × 102 to 2 × 104 cells ml–1. Input of plankton from a reservoir did not appear to influence densities at a site 25 km downstream. Diatoms formed the majority of cells in most samples, with green algae second and cryptomonads third in importance. Among the diatoms, centrics were relatively more abundant at downstream sites. The ratios of live versus dead diatoms showed marked differences with season and between centric and pennate forms. 相似文献

Core LNO3 is 1136 cm long and includes uninterrupted sediments from the Oldest Dryas to historic time which have been submitted for geological, geochemical, palynological and diatom analysis. Thirty samples have been investigated for diatoms, focussing especially on their preservation, which changed during major hydrological events. In the lower part of the core (Oldest Dryas to beginning of Atlantic), with low carbonate, but high clastic silicate content, the diatoms are rare but are well preserved. In the upper well carbonated part of the core (Atlantic to historical periods), the diatoms are abundant but show traces of dissolution.Between 1136 and 909 cm (Oldest Dryas) the flora is made up of benthic species principally of the genus Fragilaria. This flora is often the first to develop after the last glaciation. Between 879 and 569 cm (Bølling to beginning of Atlantic), littoral and terrestrial species adapted to eutrophic conditions are dominating. They suggest a strong fluvial impact on sedimentation, which corroborates the hypothesis of past inflows of the River Aar into the lake. Between 529 cm and 1 cm (Atlantic to historical periods) planktonic species of the genera Cyclotella, Aulacoseira or Stephanodiscus are dominating. This suggests that the upper well carbonated sediments were mainly formed by pelagic precipitation, without influence of the River Aar. The trophic level of the lake seems to have decreased, then increased again during prehistoric deforestation and development of agriculture in the watershed. 相似文献

Macrophytes are widely recognized for improving water quality and stabilizing the desirable clear‐water state in lakes. The positive effects of macrophytes on water quality have been noted to be weaker in the (sub)tropics compared to those of temperate regions. We conducted a global meta‐analysis using 47 studies that met our set criteria to assess the overall effects of macrophytes on water quality (measured by phytoplankton chlorophyll a concentration, total nitrogen concentration, total phosphorus concentration, Secchi depth and the trophic state index) and to investigate how these effects correlate with latitude using meta‐regressions. We also examined if the effects of macrophytes on lake‐water quality differ with growth form and study design in (sub)tropical and temperate areas by grouping the data and then comparing the effect sizes. We found that macrophytes significantly reduced phytoplankton chlorophyll a concentration, total nitrogen concentration, total phosphorus concentration, as well as the trophic state index, but they did not have a significant overall effect on Secchi depth. The effects of macrophytes on reducing phytoplankton chlorophyll a concentration, total nitrogen concentration and the trophic state index did not differ with latitude. However, the reduction of total phosphorus concentration was greater at lower latitudes. We showed that at lower latitudes, the positive effects of macrophytes on water quality are similar to or greater than those at higher latitudes, thus challenging the prevailing paradigm of macrophytes being less effective at enhancing lake‐water quality in the (sub)tropics. Furthermore, our data showed that the macrophyte effects vary by growth forms, and the growth forms that positively affect water quality differ between the (sub)tropical and temperate areas. We showed a lack of significant macrophyte effects in surveys within and outside macrophyte stands, suggesting difference in the sensitivities of study designs or possibly weaker effects of macrophytes in lakes compared to experimental settings. 相似文献

In situ incubation experiments were conducted to investigate the phosphate uptake and the growth variations of nano- and picophytoplankton under controlled phosphorus concentrations and irradiances in Changjiang estuary and its adjacent sea in China. The results showed that the rates of phosphate uptake were accelerated at high levels (0.60 μmol/L) under the condition of 100% natural irradiance, and the cell densities of nanophytoplankton and Synechococcus spp. obviously increased, whereas picoeukaryote was adapted to low phosphate levels (0.25 μmol/L). Under low irradiance (50% of natural irradiance), uptake of phosphate was restrained at high levels, and the growth of both nanophytoplankton and Synechococcus spp. was also limited. Morerover, nanophytoplankton and Synechococcus spp. grew well at intermediate phosphate levels (0.41 μmol/L), whereas picoeukaryote grew well at low phosphate levels. In addition, the growth period of phytoplankton at intermediate phosphate levels was obviously prolonged, suggesting that the limitation of phytoplankton growth mainly reflected the changes during its growth period. In the absence of irradiance, the addition of phosphate did not affect the release rates of phosphate with a linear increase in the phytoplankton, whereas the growth rates of the phytoplankton showed an exponential decrease, which showed that phosphate regeneration was faster during day than during night; therefore, the irradiance was a significant factor that affected phosphorous biogeochemical cycle in the Changjiang estuary in China. 相似文献

Approximately 6000 l of lake water was suspended in large, clear plastic chambers in Lake Powell, Arizona. The chambers were monitored during 24 h incubation periods in the spring and summer 1974 and 1975. Physico-chemical differences between the natural lake system and within the experimental chambers were negligible. Experimental mercury concentrations ranging from < 0.02 to 1.25 ppm were added to the chambers to determine the effect of elevated Hg concentrations on in situ primary production. Mercury concentrations were monitored in the water column of each chamber during each 24 h incubation period to determine absolute concentrations following reduction through adsorption, absorption and vaporization. At least a 40% reduction in photosynthetic activity occurred at Hg concentrations as low as 0.06 ppm. A toxic Hg threshold concentration of 0.06 ppm was demonstrated for the summer phytoplankton assemblage, but a distinct threshold concentration was absent for the spring diatom assemblage. Differences in spring and summer phytoplankton populations may suggest subtle differences in Hg sensitivity between phytoplankton assemblages in combination with temperature acting on total community metabolism. 相似文献

An electrophoretic survey of 12 new isolates of Thalassiosira pseudonana Hasle & Heimdal and 25 new isolates of Skeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve revealed several heterozygote genotypes at malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and phosphohexose isomerase (PHI) loci. The new clones were maintained in culture for 6 mo and then reasayed at these two loci. All MDH heterozygotes and halj of the PHI heterozygotes had become homozygous. This resulted in a collection of clones that are largely homozygous but that are samples of polymorphic species. The physlogical implications of this loss of heterozygosity in clonal cultures has not been analyzed. Hawever, any change in a clone that is the result of culturing conditions reduces the usefulness of that clone as a laboratory test organism for ecological correlations. 相似文献

Changes in marine plankton communities driven by environmental variability impact the marine food web and global biogeochemical cycles of carbon and other elements. To predict and assess these community shifts and their consequences, ecologists are increasingly investigating how the functional traits of plankton determine their relative fitness along environmental and biological gradients. Laboratory, field and modelling studies are adopting this trait‐based approach to map the biogeography of plankton traits that underlies variations in plankton communities. Here, we review progress towards understanding the regulatory roles of several key plankton functional traits, including cell size, N2‐fixation and mixotrophy among phytoplankton, and body size, ontogeny and feeding behaviour for zooplankton. The trait biogeographical approach sheds light on what structures plankton communities in the current ocean, as well as under climate change scenarios, and also allows for finer resolution of community function because community trait composition determines the rates of significant processes, including carbon export. Although understanding of trait biogeography is growing, uncertainties remain that stem, in part, from the paucity of observations describing plankton functional traits. Thus, in addition to recommending widespread adoption of the trait‐based approach, we advocate for enhanced collection, standardisation and dissemination of plankton functional trait data. 相似文献
