Variation in susceptibility is ubiquitous in multi‐host, multi‐parasite assemblages, and can have profound implications for ecology and evolution in these systems. The extent to which susceptibility to parasites is phylogenetically conserved among hosts can be revealed by analysing diverse regional communities. We screened for haemosporidian parasites in 3983 birds representing 40 families and 523 species, spanning ~ 4500 m elevation in the tropical Andes. To quantify the influence of host phylogeny on infection status, we applied Bayesian phylogenetic multilevel models that included a suite of environmental, spatial, temporal, life history and ecological predictors. We found evidence of deeply conserved susceptibility across the avian tree; host phylogeny explained substantial variation in infection status, and results were robust to phylogenetic uncertainty. Our study suggests that susceptibility is governed, in part, by conserved, latent aspects of anti‐parasite defence. This demonstrates the importance of deep phylogeny for understanding present‐day ecological interactions. 相似文献

Drosophila is the genus responsible for the birth of experimental genetics, but the taxonomy of drosophilids is difficult because of the overwhelming diversity of the group. In this study, we assembled sequences for 358 species (14 genera, eight subgenera, 57 species groups, and 65 subgroups) to generate a maximum‐likelihood topology and a Bayesian timescale. In addition to sampling an unprecedented diversity of Drosophila lineages, our analyses incorporated a geographical perspective because of the high levels of endemism. In our topology, Drosophila funebris (Fabricius, 1787) (the type species of Drosophila) is tightly clustered with the pinicola subgroup in a North American clade within subgenus Drosophila. The type species of other drosophilid genera fall within the Drosophila radiation, presenting interesting prospects for the phylogenetic taxonomy of the group. Our timescale suggests that a few drosophilid lineages survived the Cretaceous–Palaeogene (K‐Pg) extinction. The drosophilid diversification began during the Palaeocene in Eurasia, but peaked during the Miocene, an epoch of drastic climatic changes. The most recent common ancestor of the clades corresponding to subgenera Sophophora and Drosophila lived approximately 56 Mya. Additionally, Hawaiian drosophilids diverged from an East Asian lineage approximately 26 Mya, which is similar to the age of the oldest emerging atoll in the Hawaiian–Emperor Chain. Interestingly, the time estimates for major geographical splits (New World versus Asia and Africa versus Asia) were highly similar for independent lineages. Aims: Isolation, characterization and assessment of butachlor‐degrading potential of bacterial strain JS‐1 in soil. Methods and Results: Butachlor‐degrading bacteria were isolated using enrichment culture technique. The morphological, biochemical and genetic characteristics based on 16S rDNA sequence homology and phylogenetic analysis confirmed the isolate as Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila strain JS‐1. The strain JS‐1 exhibited substantial growth in M9 mineral salt medium supplemented with 3·2 mmol l?1 butachlor, as a sole source of carbon and energy. The HPLC analysis revealed almost complete disappearance of butachlor within 20 days in soil at a rate constant of 0·17 day?1 and half‐life (t½) of 4·0 days, following the first‐order rate kinetics. The strain JS‐1 in stationary phase of culture also produced 21·0 μg ml?1 of growth hormone indole acetic acid (IAA) in the presence of 500 μg ml?1 of tryptophan. The IAA production was stimulated at lower concentrations of butachlor, whereas higher concentrations above 0·8 mmol l?1 were found inhibitory. Conclusions: The isolate JS‐1 characterized as Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila was capable of utilizing butachlor as sole source of carbon and energy. Besides being an efficient butachlor degrader, it substantially produces IAA. Significance and Impact of the Study: The bacterial strain JS‐1 has a potential for butachlor remediation with a distinctive auxiliary attribute of plant growth stimulation. 相似文献

Are Nectar Sugar Composition and Corolla Tube Length Related to the Diversity of Insects that Visit Asteraceae Flowers? 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Abstract: In this work, we analysed interspecific variation in nectar sugar composition, corolla tube length, and the diversity of floral visitors of 35 Asteraceae species. The potential correlations between these variables could arise either as a result of selection to improve pollinator attractiveness or simply as a consequence of phylogenetic constraints. Samples of nectar and flowers, and data on floral visitors, were obtained from living plants in natural populations from Argentina. Asteraceae species showed a large variability in corolla tube length. Nectar of most species presented a larger proportion of hexoses than sucrose. All species were visited by numerous insects belonging to 2 different orders. Results showed that floral traits are not significantly correlated with the diversity of floral visitors. These characters seem to be linked to the phylogeny of the species. Early branching species (species phylogenetically close to the root of the Asteraceae tree) tend to have longer corollas, higher sucrose proportions and lesser diversity of floral visitors than late branching species. Considering that longer corolla tubes and higher nectar sucrose percentages may indicate some specialization in the pollination system, we suggest that there is an evolutionary tendency toward generalist pollination systems within the family. 相似文献

Further geometric morphometric analysis of the genus Eysarcoris was done based on the former studies to classified the nine Eysarcoris species from China.In this study,six characters,such as forewing,hindwing,pygophore,head,pronotum and scutellum,were selected to investigate the shape variation of Eysarcoris.Significant divergence in the shapes of the six characters was observed among the species (p < 0.05).For all methods,phenetic similarity based on the six characters agrees with the current status of the genus.The cluster analysis of eight species are consistent with the traditional morphological studies.CVA analysis also shows that the values of the six characters are not equal in taxonomy.Pygophore,forewing,hindwing and pronotum play more important roles in the classification. 相似文献

The microsporidian Nosema antheraeae is a pathogen that infects the Chinese oak silkworm, Antheraea pernyi. We sequenced the complete small subunit (SSU) rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of N. antheraeae, and compared the SSU rRNA sequences in other microsporidia. The results indicated that Nosema species, including N. antheraeae, formed two distinct clades, consistent with previous observations. Furthermore, N. antheraeae is clustered with N. bombycis with high bootstrap support. The organization of the rRNA gene of N. antheraeae is LSU-ITS1-SSU-ITS2-5S, also following a pattern similar to the Nosema type species, N. bombycis. Thus, N. antheraeae is a Nosema species and has a close relationship to N. bombycis. 相似文献

The expression in females of ornaments thought to be the target of sexual selection in males is a long-standing puzzle. Two main hypotheses are proposed to account for the existence of conspicuous ornaments in both sexes (mutual ornamentation): genetic correlation between the sexes and sexual selection on females as well as males. We examined the pattern of ornament gains and losses in 240 species of dragon lizards (Agamidae) in order to elucidate the relative contribution of these two factors in the evolution of mutual ornamentation. In addition, we tested whether the type of shelter used by lizards to avoid predators predicts the evolutionary loss or constraint of ornament expression. We found evidence that the origin of female ornaments is broadly consistent with the predictions of the genetic correlation hypothesis. Ornaments appear congruently in both sexes with some lineages subsequently evolving male biased sexual dimorphism, apparently through the process of natural selection for reduced ornamentation in females. Nevertheless, ornaments have also frequently evolved in both sexes independently. This suggests that genetic correlations are potentially weak for several lineages and sexual selection on females is responsible for at least some evolutionary change in this group. Unexpectedly, we found that the evolutionary loss of some ornaments is concentrated more in males than females and this trend cannot be fully explained by our measures of natural selection. 相似文献
