The two closely related moth species, Helicoverpa armigera and H. assulta, are sympatric in China. Both species use a mixture of (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11-16:Ald) and (Z)-9-hexadecenal (Z9-16:Ald) as their sex pheromones but in widely different ratios. Hybridization and backcrossing experiments between H. armigera and H. assulta were conducted and sex pheromone compositions of the parent species, their F(1) hybrids and backcrosses were compared to study the genetic basis of the production of their sex pheromone blend composition. Results show that the difference in sex pheromone blend ratios of these Helicoverpa species is mainly controlled by an autosomal locus with two alleles, with the allele from H. armigera being almost completely dominant over that derived from H. assulta.  相似文献

The odour of potato plants Solanum tuberosum L., elicits a true odour-conditioned positive anemotaxis in the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say. Blending the odour of non-host plant species, namely wild tomatoes Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum C.H. Mull or cabbage Brassica oleracea L. var. gemmifera DC., with the attractive host plant odour blocks the release of upwind responses in non-experienced as well as experienced females. The neutralization of the beetle's orientation responses is obtained without repellency. It is expected that masking of host plant odour occurs often in mixed cropping systems.
Résumé Un certain nombre d'articles rapporte une diminution du nombre des insectes phytophages spécialistes comme une conséquence à la diversification des agroécosystèmes (Altieri & Letourneau, 1982; Cromartie, 1981; Kareiva, 1983; Risch et al., 1983). Ainsi, il a été supposé que la présence de plantes non-hôtes pouvait interférer avec celle de plantes hôtes en modifiant la nature des informations chimiques parvenant aux insectes. Les modifications comportementales qui peuvent en résulter lors de l'attraction à distance sont toutefois encore peu claires. Les expérimentations présentées ici analysent les réponses individuelles du doryphore à diverses stimulations olfactives issues de plantes entières. Des femalles ont été ainsi étudiées un jour après l'émergeance en présence d'air vierge et d'air chargé d'odeurs de Solanum tuberosum, Lycopersicon hirsutum f. glabratum, Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera, ainsi que des mélanges, S. tuberosum avec L. hirsutum et S. tuberosum avec B. oleracea. A partir de l'enregistrement continu de l'activité locomotrice dans chaque condition (à l'aide du compensateur de locomotion), nous avons déterminé que L. hirsutum et B. oleracea masquaient l'odeur de la plante hôte S. tuberosum en supprimant la réponse anémotactique positive conditionnée par l'odeur de cette dernière. Les mélanges d'odeurs ainsi obtenus sont considérés comme neutres pour l'orientation à longue distance du doryphore. L'expérience préalable par le doryphore de l'ingestion de feuillage de pomme de terre ne modifie pas l'effet du camouflage obtenu. Ces résultats laissent penser qu'il est possible de limiter la découverte de la plante hôte chez les insectes, et que les méthodes de camouflages olfactives pourraient prévenir les attaques de certains ravageurs.

Many phytophagous insects locate their host plant using mixtures of volatile compounds produced by the plant. A key behavior in the host location process that has been the focus of decades of behavioral research is optomotor anemotaxis. Another key step in host location is landing on (or near) the odor source. In previous work, rubber septa emitting a synthetic blend of volatiles extracted from young shoots of grape plants, Vitus spp. (Vitaceae), elicited equivalent levels of oriented upwind flight by female grape berry moths (GBM), Paralobesia viteana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), as did actual (control) grape shoots. However, in contrast to the shoots, females did not land on the odor source. In this study, we used flight tunnel assays to investigate the landing response of GBM females with respect to chemical and visual stimuli, as well as differences in relative humidity. When stimuli were presented individually, only the synthetic blend of host plant volatiles elicited equivalent levels of oriented upwind flight compared to the plants. Interestingly, wet cotton strips elicited low but consistent levels of upwind flight. In paired assays, only the synthetic blend paired with wet cotton strips elicited landing, although at significantly lower levels than that elicited by grape shoots. To achieve landing rates equivalent to live grape shoots, grape berry moth females required all three stimuli we tested: host odor cues, moisture, and visual cues simulating a grape shoot. These results suggest the cues have a synergistic effect, and that landing behavior requires complex sensory processing using multiple sensory inputs. Furthermore, these results suggest that moisture plays an important role in the host plant location process.  相似文献

In marine green algae, isogamous or slightly anisogamous species are taxonomically widespread. They produce positively phototactic gametes in both sexes. We developed a new numerical simulator of gamete behavior using C++ and pseudo-parallelization methods to elucidate potential advantages of phototaxis. Input parameters were set based on experimental data. Each gamete swimming in a virtual rectangular test tank was tracked and the distances between the centers of nearby male and female were measured at each step to detect collisions. Our results shed light on the roles of gamete behavior and the mechanisms of the evolution of anisogamy and more derived forms of sexual dimorphism. We demonstrated that not only gametes with positive phototaxis were favored over those without, particularly in shallow water. This was because they could search for potential mates on the 2-D water surface rather than randomly in three dimensions. Also, phototactic behavior clarified the difference between isogamy and slight anisogamy. Isogamous species produced more zygotes than slightly anisogamous ones only under the phototactic conditions. Our results suggested that sperm limitation might be easily resolved particularly in the slightly anisogamous species. Some more markedly anisogamous species produce the smaller male gametes without any phototactic devices and the larger positively phototactic female gametes. In such species, female gametes attract their partners using a sexual pheromone. This pheromonal attraction system might have played a key role in the evolution of anisogamy, because it could enable markedly anisogamous species achieve 2-D search efficiencies on the water surface. The mating systems appear to be tightly tuned o the environmental conditions of their habitats.  相似文献

Abstract The sex attractant of the female redbanded leafroller moth, Argyrotaenia velutinana (Walker), is a blend of seven compounds. Specialized olfactory receptor neurones had been found for only two of the compounds, (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14:Ac) and (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11–14:Ac). These receptor neurones were always found in pairs within the long trichoid sensilla, which are the most abundant multi-pored sensilla on the male antenna. A systematic survey of all regions of the male antenna with standard extracellular recording techniques was undertaken to find receptor neurones responsive to the remaining five minor components of the female pheromone. Of the 113 long trichoid sensilla sampled, all contained two receptor neurones, one specialized for Z11–14:Ac and a second specialized for Ell –14:Ac. A comparable number of recordings were then obtained from the less abundant classes of multi-pored sensilla. Two new receptor neurone types were found, responsive to the minor pheromone components (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate (E9-12:Ac) and (Z)-9-dodecenyl acetate (Z9-12:Ac). Scanning electron micrographs indicated that these recordings were obtained from shorter, narrower trichoid sensilla. The majority of these sensilla appeared to contain three neurones capable of spontaneous action potential production. In each sensillum, only one receptor neurone appeared to respond to stimulation with a minor component of the female blend. The remaining two neurones did not respond to the chemical stimuli evaluated.  相似文献

The flight responses of 750 female Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are investigated in a wind tunnel bioassay. The attraction of C. vicina towards dead mice and seven different synthetic lures made from dimethyl trisulphide, mercaptoethanol and O‐cresol is compared. Responses towards natural odours and the three‐component synthetic kairomones depend on the flies' ovarian egg developmental status. The natural and three‐component lures also induce similar age‐dependent responses, although the dead mice lure yields a significantly higher attraction. Oriented flight increases with the number of chemicals in the synthetic kairomone; one‐, two‐ and three‐compound lures induce 13–25%, 32–43% and 62% attraction, respectively. Responses to one‐component lures are not significantly influenced by egg developmental status, whereas blends of two or three components are. Attraction levels increase in a stepwise manner both across egg developmental categories and with the number of compounds. The results suggest that the attractiveness of synthetic kairomones is influenced not only by the blowflies' physiological state, but also by the complexity of the lure.  相似文献

Chemically mediated behaviour of insects is often strongly affected by mixtures of odour stimuli and their temporal characteristics. Both sensory transduction and central processing of odour mixtures can give rise to several different kinds of interaction, which can influence how individual components are perceived and processed. In particular, odour mixtures have been examined in model experiments as premixed binary mixtures in comparison with pure odour stimuli. Only in few experiments, the influence of the temporal structure of odour mixtures on odour perception has been taken into account. Natural odour stimuli often have a pulsed structure and may in general be superimposed on a background of irrelevant or interfering compounds, which can fluctuate with different frequencies, depending on their source. To achieve a better representation of these natural conditions, our odour mixing experiments apply a new kind of stimulation protocol: odours were not premixed but superimposed with a specific time pattern; one odour stimulus was presented as a longer persisting background and the second stimulus was a superimposed short test signal. To gain an overview of odour interaction patterns in the Colorado potato beetle by causing adaptation of one receptor population at naturally occurring levels of concentration and time intervals, electroantennographic recordings were made on excised antennae. A matrix of 12 stimulus compounds led to 132 pairs of compounds tested, each in the role of background and test stimulus. In 64 cases, the interaction was significantly different, when the role of background and stimulus was exchanged. Interaction patterns ranging from no interference (independence) to suppression were found and assigned to four clearly distinguishable types. We discuss that the observed effects of the presentation sequence in odour mixtures may contribute to the mechanisms of olfactory pattern recognition and olfactory contrast perception by insects.  相似文献

We investigated inter‐ and intraspecific variation in epidermal gland characteristics in cordylid lizards. Our particular interest was whether a causal relationship exists between the presence of generation glands and lifestyle, i.e. in rock‐dwelling or ground‐dwelling lizards. We established that both femoral and generation glands are always present in adult males, but that species can be divided into three categories on the basis of the presence of these glands in adult females: both femoral and generation glands absent; femoral glands present, but generation glands absent; and both femoral and generation glands present. The absence of epidermal glands in females appears to be the basal condition in the Cordylidae. All cordylid species are sexually dimorphic as far as generation gland number is concerned, with females having consistently less glands than males. Gland number in females is strongly affected by climate, being lower in cooler compared with warmer environments. In males, there is no clear geographical pattern, although in some clades males of high‐altitude species have more generation glands than males of species occurring at lower altitudes. At least four of the five ground‐dwelling species in the family display unique generation gland characteristics, compared with rock‐dwelling species, reflecting the continued importance of generation glands in terrestrial environments. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 158 , 312–324.  相似文献

The physical structure of a signal is not sufficient to determine its meaning. For chemical signals between conspecifics, this concept is termed “pheromonal parsimony.” The function of a compound depends not only on its molecular structure but also on its context, which can include signal concentration and various receiver attributes. We sought to investigate the contextual flexibility of chemosensory responses through bioassays with Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) sex pheromones of various concentrations (frontalin, from males, and (Z)‐7‐dodecenyl acetate [Z7‐12:Ac], from females). We hypothesized that elephants would respond stronger to higher concentrations, especially towards the opposite‐sex pheromone, and that receiver age and sexual experience would modify responses. We examined responses of 73 captive elephants to both compounds. Pheromone concentration impacted the rate of chemosensory response, which was further modified by the sex, age and/or sexual experience of the receiver. Response rates increased with concentration for each compound across both sexes. Experience shaped male responses with older, physiologically primed males responding more often. The interaction between experience and age affected female response to frontalin, but not to Z7‐12:Ac. Furthermore, response thresholds were modified by sexual experience in most cases: experienced animals generally had lower thresholds than inexperienced animals. Elephants responded to each solution according to its perceived relevance, including concentration. These results also indicate that receiver attributes (e.g., sex, age and sexual experience) may modify seemingly fixed chemosensory responses and further emphasize the flexibility of vertebrate communication systems.  相似文献

Length of the terminal alkyl chains at dicyanovinyl (DCV) groups of two dithienosilole (DTS) containing small molecules ( DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Me)2 and DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Hex)2 ) is investigated to evaluate how this affects the molecular solubility and blend morphology as well as their performance in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (OSCs). While the DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Me)2 (a solubility of 5 mg mL?1) system exhibits both high short circuit current density (J sc) and high fill factor, the DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Hex)2 (a solubility of 24 mg mL?1) system in contrast suffers from a poor blend morphology as examined by atomic force morphology and grazing incidence X‐ray scattering measurements, which limit the photovoltaic properties. The charge generation, transport, and recombination dynamics associated with the limited device performance are investigated for both systems. Nongeminate recombination losses in DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Hex)2 system are demonstrated to be significant by combining space charge limited current analysis and light intensity dependence of current–voltage characteristics in combination with photogenerated charge carrier extraction by linearly increasing voltage and transient photovoltage measurements. DTS(Oct)2‐(2T‐DCV‐Me)2 in contrast performs nearly ideal with no evidence of nongeminate recombination, space charge effects, or mobility limitation. These results demonstrate the importance of alkyl chain engineering for solution‐processed OSCs based on small molecules as an essential design tool to overcome transport limitations.  相似文献
