Morphology, occlusal surface topography, macrowear, and microwear features of parrotfish pharyngeal teeth were investigated to relate microstructural characteristics to the function of the pharyngeal mill using scanning electron microscopy of whole and sectioned pharyngeal jaws and teeth. Pharyngeal tooth migration is anterior in the lower jaw (fifth ceratobranchial) and posterior in the upper jaw (paired third pharyngobranchials), making the interaction of occlusal surfaces and wear-generating forces complex. The extent of wear can be used to define three regions through which teeth migrate: a region containing newly erupted teeth showing little or no wear; a midregion in which the apical enameloid is swiftly worn; and a region containing teeth with only basal enameloid remaining, which shows low to moderate wear. The shape of the occlusal surface alters as the teeth progress along the pharyngeal jaw, generating conditions that appear suited to the reduction of coral particles. It is likely that the interaction between these particles and algal cells during the process of the rendering of the former is responsible for the rupture of the latter, with the consequent liberation of cell contents from which parrotfish obtain their nutrients.  相似文献

Miniaturized acceleration data loggers were attached to the lower mandible of common carp Cyprinus carpio to remotely identify feeding behaviour. Whether the acceleration signal could distinguish the quantity and quality of food was also investigated. The frequency and amplitude of the lower mandible stroke, calculated from surging acceleration determined by continuous wavelet transformation, significantly increased during the feeding period compared to that during the non-feeding period. These characteristic movement patterns were maintained for mean ±s.e. 187·3 ± 38·2 s when the fish were fed a single item of food and for mean ±s.e. 419·3 ± 28·6 s when they consumed multiple items. The dominant cycle and amplitude calculated according to feeding event duration, however, did not differ significantly between the two types of diets the fish consumed. Surging acceleration could detect mean ±s.e. 89·8 ± 13·5% of feeding events, although the false detection rate was mean ±s.e. 25·9 ± 10·9%. The results indicate that the mandible acceleration measurement method could be utilized to detect and record the feeding events in fishes that use a suction feeding mode similar to C. carpio.  相似文献

TGFβ/BMP signaling pathways are essential for normal development of neural crest cells (NCCs). Smad4 encodes the only common Smad protein in mammals, which is a critical nuclear mediator of TGFβ/BMP signaling. In this work, we sought to investigate the roles of Smad4 for development of NCCs. To overcome the early embryonic lethality of Smad4 null mice, we specifically disrupted Smad4 in NCCs using a Cre/loxP system. The mutant mice died at mid-gestation with defects in facial primordia, pharyngeal arches, outflow tract and cardiac ventricles. Further examination revealed that mutant embryos displayed severe molecular defects starting from E9.5. Expression of multiple genes, including Msx1, 2, Ap-2α, Pax3, and Sox9, which play critical roles for NCC development, was downregulated by NCC disruption of Smad4. Moreover, increased cell death was observed in pharyngeal arches from E10.5. However, the cell proliferation rate in these areas was not substantially altered. Taken together, these findings provide compelling genetic evidence that Smad4-mediated activities of TGFβ/BMP signals are essential for appropriate NCC development.  相似文献

The Labridae (including wrasses, the Odacidae and the Scaridae) is a species‐rich group of perciform fishes whose members are prominent inhabitants of warm‐temperate and tropical reefs worldwide. We analyse functionally relevant morphometrics for the feeding apparatus of 130 labrid species found on the Great Barrier Reef and use these data to explore the morphological and mechanical basis of trophic diversity found in this assemblage. Morphological measurements were made that characterize the functional and mechanical properties of the oral jaws that are used in prey capture and handling, the hyoid apparatus that is used in expanding the buccal cavity during suction feeding, and the pharyngeal jaw apparatus that is used in breaking through the defences of shelled prey, winnowing edible matter from sand and other debris, and pulverizing the algae, detritus and rock mixture eaten by scarids (parrotfishes). A Principal Components Analysis on the correlation matrix of a reduced set of ten variables revealed complete separation of scarids from wrasses on the basis of the former having a small mouth with limited jaw protrusion, high mechanical advantage in jaw closing, and a small sternohyoideus muscle and high kinematic transmission in the hyoid four‐bar linkage. Some scarids also exhibit a novel four‐bar linkage conformation in the oral jaw apparatus. Within wrasses a striking lack of strong associations was found among the mechanical elements of the feeding apparatus. These weak associations resulted in a highly diverse system in which functional properties occur in many different combinations and reflect variation in feeding ecology. Among putatively monophyletic groups of labrids, the cheilines showed the highest functional diversity and scarids were moderately diverse, in spite of their reputation for being trophically monomorphic and specialized. We hypothesize that the functional and ecological diversity of labrids is due in part to a history of decoupled evolution of major components of the feeding system (i.e. oral jaws, hyoid and pharyngeal jaw apparatus) as well as among the muscular and skeletal elements of each component. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2004, 82 , 1–25.  相似文献

This study compares sand shiner (Notropis stramineus ) and silverjaw (Ericymba buccata ) minnows, in terms of the morphological shape changes of the upper, lower, and pharyngeal jaws over ontogeny. These two species of minnows initially feed on midge larvae and undergo an ontogenic prey shift. The traditional morphometrics measured—total length, snout‐to‐vent length, eye diameter, premaxilla length, lower jaw length, gape—were regressed onto total length to test for allometry. Digital pictures were processed with tpsDig and further analyzed with MorphoJ utilizing a regular geometric morphometrics procedure using principle component analyses. We examined gut contents for 16 fish of each species. For the silverjaw minnows, we found all jaw variables to exhibit positive allometric growth with increasing total length, while most of the jaw variables for the sand shiner exhibited negative allometric growth with increasing total length. This correlates with an ontogenic prey shift for both species. Sand shiner minnows have been found to be more omnivorous, feeding on algae later in life, while silverjaw minnows undergo a prey shift to larger invertebrates. These species lack oral dentition causing an increased reliance on the pharyngeal apparatus. Principle component analyses revealed elongation of pharyngeal jaw elements in the silverjaw minnows and a relative shortening and bulking of pharyngeal jaws in the sand shiner minnows. The ontogenic dietary shifts observed in these two species provide possible explanation for the morphological changes over ontogeny in jaw elements, which are likely enabling these species to occupy the same habitat with little niche overlap.  相似文献

Due to the peculiar morphology of its preotic head, lampreys have long been treated as an intermediate animal which links amphioxus and gnathostomes. To reevaluate the segmental theory of classical comparative embryology, mesodermal development was observed in embryos of a lamprey, Lampetra japonica, by scanning electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Signs of segmentation are visible in future postotic somites at an early neurula stage, whereas the rostral mesoderm is unsegmented and rostromedially confluent with the prechordal plate. The premandibular and mandibular mesoderm develop from the prechordal plate in a caudal to rostral direction and can be called the preaxial mesoderm as opposed to the caudally developing gastral mesoderm. With the exception of the premandibular mesoderm, the head mesodermal sheet is secondarily regionalized by the otocyst and pharyngeal pouches into the mandibular mesoderm, hyoid mesoderm, and somite 0. The head mesodermal components never develop into cephalic myotomes, but the latter develop only from postotic somites. These results show that the lamprey embryo shows a typical vertebrate phylotype and that the basic mesodermal configuration of vertebrates already existed prior to the split of agnatha-gnathostomata; lamprey does not represent an intermediate state between amphioxus and gnathostomes. Unlike interpretations of theories of head segmentation that the mesodermal segments are primarily equivalent along the axis, there is no evidence in vertebrate embryos for the presence of preotic myotomes. We conclude that mesomere-based theories of head metamerism are inappropriate and that the formulated vertebrate head should possess the distinction between primarily unsegmented head mesoderm which includes preaxial components at least in part and somites in the trunk which are shared in all the known vertebrate embryos as the vertebrate phylotype.  相似文献

鲤具鲤科咽齿个体发生的共同性征,又呈现其种的独特性状.主要特性;(1)主列齿相连3齿胚几乎同时出现、同时脱落,形成3个相连齿种同时置换的特殊模式;(2)主列齿发生中曾出现4枚齿,替换3代后A_4齿退化消失,最终齿式1.1.3-3.1.1,成为迄今3列咽齿的鱼类中齿数最少的种类.鲤与其近缘种间系统关系比较结果;依最近缘属顺次排列为中鲤、原鲤、肥鲤;而最近缘的亚科为肥亚科.    相似文献

During capillary electrophoresis of negatively charged polysaccharides in polymer solutions as sieving media, concentration fluctuations develop due to electrohydrodynamic instabilities caused by polarization of the polyelectrolytic chains. This leads to deviations from electroneutrality far beyond the Debye layer and segregation of the initially homogeneous sample solution into aggregated sample‐rich domains as verified by epifluorescence videomicroscopy imaging. As a result, anomalous and irregular peak profiles are obtained impeding the characterization of such complex sample mixtures. This effect appears at an electric field strength threshold value that depends on the molecular weight of the solute polymer molecules, pH, type and concentration of the polymer solution sieving media, and buffering conditions. The magnitude increases with increasing field strength and amount of sample injected. The aggregation onset, as evaluated by the value of the threshold potential, is affected by the charge density of the sample polymer molecules and Debye screening effects and investigated through variation of pH and ionic strength, respectively. Exchange of a simple base buffer component for small and multiply charged organic bases markedly increases the electric field strength necessary to trigger the electrohydrodynamic instabilities. Ultimately, the threshold value could be increased more than seven times by addition of an oppositely charged aminodextran polymer, thereby decreasing the analysis time. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A eukaryotic-type signaling system in group A Streptococcus (GAS) was identified and characterized. This system comprises primarily the products of two co-transcribed genes, a eukaryotic-type Ser/Thr kinase (SP-STK) and phosphatase (SP-STP) and their endogenous substrate histone-like protein (SP-HLP). Enzyme activities of SP-STK and SP-STP primarily depended on Mn(2+). The site on the substrate for reversible phosphorylation by these enzymes was found to be only the threonine residue. Using specific antibodies generated against these proteins, SP-STK was found to be membrane-associated with its N-terminal kinase domain facing the cytoplasm and its C-terminal repeat domain outside the membrane and cell-wall associated. Further, SP-STP, primarily a cytoplasmic protein, was found to be a major secretory protein of GAS and essential for bacterial survival. Three isogenic mutants, lacking either the entire SP-STK, or one of its two domains, were found displaying distinct pleiotropic effects on growth, colony morphology, cell division/septation, surface protein/virulence factor expression, bacterial ability to adhere to and invade human pharyngeal cells, and resist phagocytosis by human neutrophils. In addition to these properties, the ability of these three proteins to modulate the expression of the major virulence factors, the M protein and the capsule, indicates that these proteins are structurally and functionally distinct from the kinases and phosphatases described in other microorganisms and play a key role in GAS pathogenesis.  相似文献
