Chironomid larvae (Chironomus spp.,Dicrotendipes conjunctus andProcladius paludicola) collected from Cox Creek and Aldgate Creek, South Australia, showed morphological abnormalities similar to those reported in other studies elsewhere in the world. The sediment of Cox Creek contained high concentrations of pesticides and there was a significant correlation between the occurrence of mouthpart and antennal deformities in larvae and the concentration of DDT and the herbicide, Dacthal®.Laboratory experiments were conducted using a culture ofChironomus sp. to determine whether or not a causal relationship existed between exposure to pesticides and the occurrence of deformities in larvae. Results showed a positive relationship between the concentration of DDT and the percentage of deformed mouthparts (menta). The results for the effect of DDT on antennae and those for the effect of Dachthal® were less clear, but generally showed a higher incidence of deformity for treatments compared with controls.To compare these results to a natural population (i.e. from an unpolluted area) the incidence of deformities was measured for larvae collected from Deep Creek Conservation Park, an area virtually free of pollution. The significance of this work is discussed with regard to its wider application as a useful environmental monitoring technique for freshwater systems.  相似文献

The presence of turfgrass thatch complicates the sorption and transport of water soluble pesticides because the surface-applied pesticides must pass through an organic-rich thatch layer prior to entering the soil. The study was conducted (1) to determine the impact of zoysiagrass thatch (Zoy-sia japonica Steud.) on dicamba (3,6-dichloro-2-methoxy benzoic acid) transport through soil columns, and (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of linear equilibrium (LEM), two site nonequilibrium (2SNE) and one site nonequilibrium (1SNE) models to predict dicamba transport through columns containing a surface layer of thatch and columns devoid of thatch. The equilibrium sorption isotherms of 14C dicamba to homogenized samples of zoysiagrass thatch and a Sassafras loamy sand soil (fine loamy, mixed mesic, Typic Hapludult) were determined. Following the application of bromide to determine transport parameters, 0.56?kg dicamba ha?1 was surface applied to undisturbed soil columns containing a surface layer of thatch and columns devoid of thatch and leachate samples collected for 12?h under steady-state unsaturated conditions. Zoysiagrass thatch (Kf = 0.82) had a three times greater sorption capacity than the soil (Kf = 0.28) beneath the thatch. Dicamba leaching for columns with thatch layers was ca. 21% less than soil columns devoid of thatch. When dicamba breakthrough curves were fitted to the different forms of the convective dispersive equation, the 2SNE model simulated dicamba transport better than LEM and 1SNE models, indicating the presence of two-site nonequilibrium sorption. Indications are that turfgrass thatch may have significant effects on dicamba leaching that presently used regulatory models based on LEM approach do not adequately consider.  相似文献

A methodology using existing, accessible public information is presented for the estimation of amounts of mercury that may have been applied to soils historically on agricultural land in the U.S. Estimations based on national agricultural consumption data reported by the Bureau of Mines can be apportioned further to the state and county level. For comparison, estimates using crop recommendations are presented, which can be considered to provide an upper-bound estimate of amounts potentially used on individual farms. In New Jersey, approximately 318,000?lb of mercury as an active ingredient could have been applied on approximately 150,000 acres of cropland and golf courses in the period 1921 to 1990. Based on crop recommendations, as much as 600,000 to over 1,000,000?lb of mercury could have been applied.  相似文献

Usually, the purpose of the response surface optimization is to be able to locate the optimum operating levels of the regressors. In quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) studies, the predicting variable reflects any biological property, and the regressors are structural and physico-chemical terms. By contrast to the Box-Wilson approach, the regressors are continously distributed. The working technique is demonstrated on an example adapted from organophosphorus pesticide research. It was found that the maximum neurotoxicity depends on lipophilic and steric substituent properties.  相似文献

Improvements in chemical analytical technology and non-invasive sampling protocols have made it easier to detect pesticides and their metabolites at very low concentrations in human tissues. Monitoring has revealed that pesticides penetrate both maternal and paternal reproductive tissues and organs, thus providing a pathway for initiating harm to their offspring starting before fertilization throughout gestation and lactation. This article explores the literature that addresses the parental pathway of exposure to pesticides. We use DDT/DDE as a model for chemicals that oftentimes upon exposure have no apparent, immediate health impacts, or cause no obvious birth defects, and are seldom linked with cancer. Their health effects are overlooked because they are invisible and not life threatening—but might have significant health, social, and economic impacts at the individual and population levels. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the necessity to develop new approaches for determining the safety of pesticides and the need for innovative regulatory policy to protect human and environmental health.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the phytoremediation potential of mycorrhizal systems for the remediation of aldrin-contaminated soils. Feltleaf willow (Salix alaxensis) and balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera) were grown in soil spiked with 0.8 mg/kg aldrin- (1,2,3,4,10-14C). Daconil2787® was employed to suppress indigenous mycorrhizal infection. After 100 days of greenhouse incubation, mycorrhizal infection in the fungicide-amended willows was found to be 2.5 fold lower than in controls. Mycorrhizal infection in the poplar systems was unaffected by fungicide addition. Mycorrhizae were correlated with radiolabel uptake in the willow systems (r = 0.79), and not as strongly in the poplar systems (r = 0.58). Most of the radiolabel in the root material was bound product regardless of mycorrhizal infection, but 12 to 21% was found to be extractable dieldrin. Aldrin was not detected in any vegetative matrix. Dieldrin constituted less than 1% of the radiolabel in the willow leaf material, accumulating to approximately 5 μg/kg. Dieldrin was not detected in the poplar leaves (MDL ≈ 1 μg/kg), although the poplars took up approximately the same amount of radiolabel as the willows. Water-soluble transformation products were formed in the vegetated soils (6 to 12%) and nonvegetated controls (1 to 2%).  相似文献
