Understanding the ecological processes that govern species'' range margins is a fundamental question in ecology with practical implications in conservation biology. The center‐periphery hypothesis predicts that organisms have higher abundance at the center of their geographic range. However, most tests of this hypothesis often used raster data, assuming that climatic conditions are consistent across one square km. This assumption is not always justified, particularly for mountainous species for which climatic conditions can vary widely across a small spatial scale. Previous studies rarely evenly sample occurrence data across the species'' distribution. In this study, we sampled an endemic perennial herb, Thunbergia atacorensis (Acanthanceae), throughout its range in West Africa using 54 plots and collected data on (a)biotic variables, the species density, leaf mass per area, and basal diameter. We built a structural equation model to test the direct and indirect effects of distance from geographic and climatic niche centers, and altitude on Thunbergia density as mediated by abiotic and biotic factors, population demographic structure, and individual size. Contrary to the prediction of the center‐periphery hypothesis, we found no significant effect of distance from geographic or climatic niche centers on plant density. This indicates that even the climatic center does not necessarily have optimal ecological conditions. In contrast, plant density varied with altitudinal gradient, but this was mediated by the effect of soil nitrogen and potassium which had positive effect on plant size. Surprisingly, we found no direct or mediating effect of interspecific competition on plant density. Altogether, our results highlight the role of geography, climatic, and ecological mismatch in predicting species distribution. Our study highlights that where altitudinal gradient is strong local‐scale heterogeneity in abiotic factors can play important role in shaping species range limits.  相似文献

The expression of two calcium‐binding proteins of the parvalbumin (PV) family, the α isoform (αPV) and the β isoform known as oncomodulin (OM), was investigated in the rat cochlea during postnatal development and related to cholinergic efferent innervation. Using RT‐PCR analysis, we found that OM expression begins between postnatal day 2 (P2) and P4, and peaks as early as P10, while αPV mRNA begins expression before birth and remains highly expressed into the adult period. Both in situ hybridization and immunoreactivity confirm that OM is uniquely expressed by the outer hair cells (OHCs) in the rat cochlea and occurs after efferent innervation along the cochlear spiral between P2 and P4. In contrast to OM expression, αPV immunoreactivity is expressed in both inner hair cells (IHCs) and OHCs at birth. Following olivocochlear efferent innervation, OHCs demonstrate weak OM immunoreactivity beginning at P5 and diminished αPV immunoreactivity after P10. In organ cultures isolated prior to the efferent innervation of OHCs, OM immunoreactivity failed to develop in OHCs, but αPV immunoreactivity remained present in both IHCs and OHCs. In contrast, organ cultures isolated after efferent innervation of OHCs show OHCs with low levels of OM immunoreactivity and high levels of αPV immunoreactivity. This study suggests that OM and αPV are differentially regulated in OHCs during cochlear development. Molecular genetic markers may reveal informative patterns of population processes such as historical migration, which may substantiate inference on postglacial re-colonization inferred, e.g., from fossil records. Palynological records of Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra) suggest that the species has re-colonized the central Alps from a southeastern Alpine refugium after the last glacial maximum. Such a migration pathway likely resulted in a gradual decrease in genetic diversity with increasing distance to the glacial refugium, owing to founder events at the leading range edge. The present distribution of P. cembra in Switzerland consists of two rather distinct ranges, namely the inner-alpine parts of the Grisons and Valais, respectively, and additional disjunct occurrences in the northern and southern periphery of the Alps as well as between the two main ranges. We screened chloroplast microsatellite loci on 39 Swiss P. cembra populations and show that the genetic structure detected was congruent with a common ancestry from a single glacial refugium, likely located at the (south-)eastern periphery of the Alps. In contrast, our data rejected the alternative hypothesis of a distinct genetic separation of the two main ranges of Swiss stone pine in Switzerland. We further show that low genetic diversity within and high differentiation among peripheral populations in the northern Alps as well as the genetic differentiation between core and peripheral populations reflect genetic drift as a consequence of colonization history and limited gene flow by pollen and seed.

Zusammenfassung  Molekulargenetische Marker enthalten wertvolle Information über Populationsprozesse wie historische Wanderungen, wodurch Annahmen zur postglazialen Wiederbesiedelung, beispielsweise abgeleitet von Fossilfunden, unterstützt werden k?nnen. Palynologische Funde von Arve (Pinus cembra) lassen vermuten, dass diese Art nach dem letzten glazialen Maximum von einem Refugium in den süd?stlichen Alpen wieder in die zentralen Alpen eingewandert ist. Ein solcher Rückwanderungsweg dürfte aufgrund von Gründereffekten an der Wanderungsfront eine graduelle Verringerung der genetischen Variation mit zunehmender Distanz zum Glazialrefugium bewirkt haben. Die heutige Verbreitung von P. cembra in der Schweiz weist zwei deutlich getrennte Gebiete auf, n?mlich inneralpine Bereiche der Kantone Graubünden und Wallis, mit jeweils isolierten Vorkommen in den n?rdlichen und südlichen Randalpen. Wir untersuchten Chloroplasten-Mikrosatelliten in 39 Schweizer Populationen von P. cembra und zeigen, dass die gefundene genetische Struktur übereinstimmt mit der Annahme einer gemeinsamen Abstammung aus einem einzigen Glazialrefugium, welches vermutlich am (süd-)?stlichen Rand der Alpen lag. Im Gegensatz dazu widerlegen unsere Daten die alternative Hypothese einer deutlichen genetischen Trennung der zwei Hauptvorkommen der Arve in der Schweiz. Im Weiteren zeigen unsere Resultate eine geringe genetische Variation innerhalb und einen hohen Differenzierungsgrad zwischen n?rdlichen Randalpenvorkommen, sowie eine genetische Differenzierung zwischen zentralen und peripheren Populationen. Dies weist auf genetische Drift hin, welche die Besiedlungsgeschichte und einen beschr?nkten Genfluss durch Pollen und Samen widerspiegelt.

1. The responses of periphery (PNS) and central nervous systems (CNS) towards nerve injury are different: while injured mammalian periphery nerons can successfully undergo regeneration, axons in the central nervous system are usually not able to regenerate.2. In the present study, the genes which were differentially expressed in the PNS and CNS following nerve injury were identified and compared by microarray profiling techniques.3. Sciatic nerve crush and hemisection of the spinal cord of adult mice were used as the models for nerve injury in PNS and CNS respectively.4. It was found that of all the genes examined, 14% (80/588) showed changes in expression following either PNS or CNS injury, and only 3% (18/588) showed changes in both types of injuries.5. Among all the differentially expressed genes, only 8% (6/80) exhibited similar changes in gene expression (either up- or down-regulation) following injury in both PNS and CNS nerve injuries.6. Our results indicated that microarray expression profiling is an efficient and useful method to identify genes that are involved in the regeneration process following nerve injuries, and several genes which are differentially expressed in the PNS and/or CNS following nerve injuries were identified in the present study.  相似文献

I hypothesize that re‐occurring prior experience of complex systems mobilizes a fast response, whose attractor is encoded by their strongly connected network core. In contrast, responses to novel stimuli are often slow and require the weakly connected network periphery. Upon repeated stimulus, peripheral network nodes remodel the network core that encodes the attractor of the new response. This “core‐periphery learning” theory reviews and generalizes the heretofore fragmented knowledge on attractor formation by neural networks, periphery‐driven innovation, and a number of recent reports on the adaptation of protein, neuronal, and social networks. The core‐periphery learning theory may increase our understanding of signaling, memory formation, information encoding and decision‐making processes. Moreover, the power of network periphery‐related “wisdom of crowds” inventing creative, novel responses indicates that deliberative democracy is a slow yet efficient learning strategy developed as the success of a billion‐year evolution. Summary In the context of aggression and courtship, Eigenmannia repeatedly interrupts its electric organ discharges (EODs) These interruptions (Fig. 1) contain low-frequency components as well as high-frequency transients and, therefore, stimulate ampullary and tuberous electroreceptors, respectively (Figs. 2, 3). Information provided by these two classes of receptors is relayed along separate pathways, via the electrosensory lateral line lobe (ELL) of the hindbrain, to the dorsal torus semicircularis (TSd) of the midbrain. Some neurons of the torus receive inputs from both types of receptors (Figs. 14, 15), and some respond predominantly to EOD interruptions while being rather insensitive to other forms of signal modulations (Figs. 12, 13). 草地贪夜蛾Spodoptera frugiperda原产于美洲,具有长距离迁飞特性。该虫于1988年入侵欧洲,2016年入侵非洲,并引起巨大的粮食损失,2018年入侵亚洲,2019年从缅甸传入中国,并在短时间扩散至全国10多个省。草地贪夜蛾依赖性信息素通讯,实现雌雄间识别、交配和繁衍,为了深入研究草地贪夜蛾的性信息素通讯及其机制并开发更高效的预测预报和防治技术,本文综述了草地贪夜蛾性信息素通讯的研究现状。1967年首次报道草地贪夜蛾性信息素为顺9-十四乙酸酯,随后发现有不同的鉴定结果,1986年确认其性信息素由顺9-十四乙酸酯和顺7-十二乙酸酯两个组分组成,其比例为96.6∶3.4时表现出最强的引诱活性。除此而外,对不同地理种群的研究发现,草地贪夜蛾雌蛾的信息素腺体提取物还存在顺9-十二乙酸酯、顺11-十六乙酸酯和反7-十二乙酸酯,田间实验表明这些物质在性信息素通讯中也可发挥作用。根据分子标记和喜食寄主,草地贪夜蛾可分为玉米品系和水稻品系。两个品系在外部形态上无法区分,性信息素组分也相同,但在组分比例上存在一定的差异。两个品系间存在一定程度的生殖隔离,但室内可以正交和反交并产生可育的F1代,F1代的性信息素比例与母本的比较相似。关于草地贪夜蛾雄性对性信息素的感受机制方面研究较少,仅见有感器形态的鉴定和对性信息素组分的触角电位反应研究的报道。根据目前草地贪夜蛾在我国的发生情况及其性信息素通讯机制的研究现状,我们建议尽快开展以下研究:(1)鉴定草地贪夜蛾我国入侵种群的雌性性信息素,尽快用于其种群动态监测及防治;(2)研究草地贪夜蛾雄性对性信息素的嗅觉编码机制;(3)研究草地贪夜蛾两个品系的行为隔离程度及其演化结局。  相似文献
