Group size is known to affect both the amount of time that prey animals spend in vigilance and the degree to which the vigilance of group members is synchronized. However, the variation in group-size effects reported in the literature is not yet understood. Prey animals exhibit vigilance both to protect themselves against predators and to monitor other group members, and both forms of vigilance presumably influence group-size effects on vigilance. However, our understanding of the patterns of individual investment underlying the time sharing between anti-predator and social vigilance is still limited. We studied patterns of variation in individual vigilance and the synchronization of vigilance with group size in a wild population of eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) subject to predation, in particular focusing on peripheral females because we expected that they would exhibit both social and anti-predator vigilance. There was no global effect of group size on individual vigilance. The lack of group-size effect was the result of two compensating effects. The proportion of time individuals spent looking at other group members increased, whereas the proportion of time they spent scanning the environment decreased with group size; as a result, overall vigilance levels did not change with group size. Moreover, a degree of synchrony of vigilance occurred within groups and that degree increased with the proportion of vigilance time peripheral females spent in anti-predator vigilance. Our results highlight the crucial roles of both social and anti-predator components of vigilance in the understanding of the relationship between group size and vigilance, as well as in the synchronization of vigilance among group members.  相似文献

Sixteen polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated in the cooperatively breeding grey‐crowned babbler (Pomatostomus temporalis). The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to eight, and observed heterozygosity from 0.07 to 0.88. Two loci showed a significant heterozygote deficiency, one of which appears to be sex‐linked. The exclusion probability for eight unlinked loci was 0.9996 with the other parent known. These loci will be used to analyse population genetic structure and the mating system of this vulnerable species.  相似文献

The progressive loss of colour in the hair of grey horses is controlled by a dominantly inherited allele at the Grey locus (GG). In this study, two paternal Quarter Horse (QH) families segregating for the GG allele were genotyped with a set of 101 microsatellite markers spanning the 31 autosomes and the X chromosome. This genome scan demonstrated linkage of Grey to COR018 (RF=0.02, LOD=12.04) on horse chromosome 25 (ECA25). Further chromosome-specific analysis of seven total QH families confirmed the linkage of Grey to a group of ECA25 markers and the map order of NVHEQ43-(0.24)-UCDEQ405-(0.09)-COR080-(0.05)-GREY-(0.14)-UCDEQ464 was produced. Although G was found to be linked to TXN and COR018 in the chromosome-specific analysis, the data were not sufficiently informative to place either marker on our ECA25 map with significant LODs. Our results excluded the equine tyrosinase related protein 1 (TYRP1) and melanocyte protein 17 (Pmel17) genes as possible candidates for the grey phenotype in horses.  相似文献

A strategy for integrated biological and chemical control of Botrytis cinerea in unheated tomato greenhouses in southeastern Spain was tested. The biocontrol agent used was a commercial preparation developed from an isolate of Trichoderma harzianum T39 (Trichodex®). Decisions concerning whether to spray the biocontrol agent or a fungicide were made based on a future weather disease warning system called BOTMAN implemented as follows: no spraying when slow or no disease progress was expected; use of a chemical fungicide when an outbreak of epidemics was expected; in all other cases, application of Trichoderma harzianum T39 was recommended. A 4‐day weather forecast provided by the Eastern Andalusian Weather Forecast Service was used for predictions. The integrated strategy was compared with weekly applications of fungicides in two experiments conducted over 1998–99 and 1999–2000. Reduction of disease incidence was obtained only with the fungicide‐only treatment in the 1998–99 experiment (55%, P < 0.05). Application of BOTMAN gave high disease risk only in 2 dates or times in that experiment, so fungicides were only applied twice. For the remaining 12 dates or times, Trichodex® was sprayed. In the second experiment, application of BOTMAN gave moderate risk all the weeks and Trichodex® was applied nine times. In this experiment, disease level did not differ significantly (P < 0.05) from untreated plot. The reasons for failure of BOTMAN in Spanish conditions were discussed.  相似文献

Ideal free distribution (IFD) theory predicts that animals in competitive situations should distribute themselves among available habitat patches according to the density of conspecifics and its regulatory effect on resources. To investigate the applicability of IFD models to free-ranging herbivores, we quantified the dispersion and foraging behaviour of eastern grey kangaroos Macropus giganteus among habitat patches of differing suitability, within and outside a reservoir catchment in southern Victoria, Australia. Kangaroo densities within the catchment had a regulatory effect on resource density, while surrounding farmland maintained a higher standing crop despite higher densities of competitors. This difference was slight in autumn, however, when the system was apparently close to equilibrium. Gross bite rates of individuals foraging in farmland were lower than for individuals foraging within the catchment, and vigilance behaviour occurred more frequently in farmland habitat than any other, decreasing time devoted to feeding. Interference competition occurred in only 1.9% of focal samples, although competitive differences based on phenotype were observed. Although resource gains by individual kangaroos are likely to be influenced by other factors, including resource dynamics, predation risk and phenotypic differences, IFD theory provides a valuable analytical framework for this herbivore foraging system.  相似文献

研究喀斯特地区的优先流现象,明确影响优先流的主要因素,对当地植被恢复具有重要意义。通过野外染色示踪试验以及图像处理技术,获得染色溶液在垂直和水平方向上的分布情况,并提取总染色面积比、基质流深度、优先流比和长度指数作为优先流特征参数,运用灰色关联度分析法对影响优先流的14个因子进行分析。结果表明: 喀斯特地区典型林分土壤存在优先流现象,其优先流主要有漏斗状和树枝状两类,有横向水流运动现象发生。喀斯特地区林下的染色面积比平均为19.4%,基质流深度、优先流比和长度指数平均分别为4.96 cm、62.9%和385.5%。在影响优先流的14个环境因子中,对染色面积比影响最大的是土壤初始含水量,对基质流深度影响最大的是速效钾含量,对优先流比和长度指数影响最大的均为速效磷含量。喀斯特地区典型林分下优先流的发育程度高且空间变化剧烈,土壤初始含水量等物理性质对其有较大影响,土壤养分也是优先流的一个重要影响因素。  相似文献

Summary The anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin was injected into the medial nucleus of the solitary tract and into the rostral dorsomedial medulla. A sequential two-color immunoperoxidase staining was accomplished in order to demonstrate the co-distribution of presumed terminal axons with chemically distinct neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus of the midbrain central gray, i.e., B7 serotonergic and A10dc dopaminergic neurons. Black-stained efferent fibers from the medial nucleus of the solitary tract and the rostral dorsomedial medulla intermingled with brown-stained serotonergic (5-hydroxytryptamine-immunoreactive) or dopaminergic (tyrosine hydroxylase-immunoreactive) neurons. Light microscopy revealed that the black-stained efferent axons exhibited numerous en passant and terminal varicosities that were often found in close apposition to brown-stained serotonergic and dopaminergic somata, and to proximal and distal dendrites and dendritic processes. The close association of immunoreactive elements suggests the presence of axo-somatic and axodendritic synaptic contacts of medullary fibers with serotonergic and dopaminergic neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus. These projections could be involved in the modulation of dorsal raphe neurons, depending on the autonomic status of an animal.  相似文献

In cats, we studied the influences of stimulation of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) and locus coeruleus (LC) on postsynaptic processes evoked in neurons of the somatosensory cortex by stimulation of nociceptive (intensive stimulation of the tooth pulp) and non-nociceptive (moderate stimulations of the infraorbital nerve and ventroposteromedial nucleus of the thalamus) afferent inputs. Twelve cells activated exclusively by nociceptors and 16 cells activated by both nociceptive and non-nociceptive influences (hereafter, nociceptive and convergent neurons, respectively) were recorded intracellularly. In neurons of both groups, responses to nociceptive stimulation (of sufficient intensity) looked like an EPSP-spike-IPSP (the latter, of significant duration, up to 200 msec) complex. Electrical stimulation of the PAG (which could itself evoke activation of the cortical neurons under study) resulted in long-term suppression of synaptic responses evoked by excitation of nociceptors (inhibition reached its maximum at a test interval of 600 to 800 msec). We observed a certain parallelism between conditioning influences of PAG activation and effects of systemic injections of morphine. Isolated stimulation of LC by a short high-frequency train of stimuli evoked primary excitatory responses (complex EPSPs) in a part of the examined cortical neurons, while in other cells high-amplitude and long-lasting IPSP (up to 120 msec) were observed. Independently of the type of the primary response to PAG stimulation, the latter resulted in long-term (several seconds) suppression of the responses evoked in cortical cells by stimulation of the nociceptive inputs. We have demonstrated that during opiate withdrawal, preprothyrotropin releasing hormone (preproTRH) mRNA is increased in neurons of the midbrain periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) while the concentration of TRH remained unaltered, suggesting that the processing of proTRH may be different in this region of the brain. The aim of the present study was to determine which of the proTRH-derived peptides are affected by opiate withdrawal in the PAG. These changes were compared to other TRH-containing areas such as the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN), median eminence (ME) and the lateral hypothalamus (LH). Control and morphine-treated rats 24 h following naltrexone-precipitated withdrawal were decapitated and the brain microdissected. Pooled samples from each animal group were acid extracted, and peptides were electrophoretically separated then analyzed by specific radioimmunoassay. Opiate withdrawal caused a significant change in the level of some post-translational processing products derived from the TRH precursor. In the PAG, opiate withdrawal resulted in an accumulation of the intervening preproTRH(83-106) peptide from the N-terminal side of the prohormone, while the levels of the C-terminal preproTRH(208-285) peptide were reduced, with no change in preproTRH(25-50) or TRH, itself, as compared to control animals. Immunohistochemical analysis also showed significant increases in cellular preproTRH(83-106) peptide immunolabeling in the PAG. Opiate withdrawal in the lateral hypothalamus, unlike from the PAG, was accompanied by an increase in the concentration of TRH. In addition, western blot analysis showed that during opiate withdrawal, the mature form of the prohormone convertase 2 (PC2) increased only in PAG as compared with their respective controls. Thus, these results demonstrate a region-specific regulation of TRH prohormone processing in the brain, which may engage PC2, further suggesting a role for specific proTRH-derived peptides in the manifestations of opiate withdrawal.  相似文献
