The advanced snakes (Alethinophidia) include the extant snakes with a highly evolved head morphology providing increased gape and jaw flexibility. Along with other physiological and morphological adaptations, this allows them to immobilize, ingest, and transport prey that may be disproportionately large or presents danger to the predator from bites, teeth, horns, or spines. Reported incidents of snakes failing to consume prey and being injured or killed during feeding mostly reflect information in the form of natural-history notes. Here we provide the first extensive review of such incidents, including 101 publications describing at least 143 cases of mortality (including six of ‘multiple individuals’) caused by ingestion or attempted consumption of injurious prey. We also report on 15 previously unpublished injurious feeding incidents from the USA, Austria, and Bulgaria, including mortality of five juvenile piscivorous dice snakes (Natrix tessellata) from a single location. Occurrences are spread across taxa, with mortality documented for at least 73 species from eight families and 45 genera. Incidents were generally well represented within each of three major categories: oversized prey (40.6%), potentially harmful prey (40.6%), and predator's behavioural/mechanical errors (18.9%). Reptile (33%) and fish (26%) prey caused disproportionately high mortality compared to mammals (16%). Feeding can be dangerous throughout a snake's life, with the later stages of feeding likely being more perilous. The number of reports has increased over time, and the data seem biased towards localities with a higher number of field-working herpetologists. We propose a standardized framework, comprising a set of basic information that should ideally be collected and published, and which could be useful as a template for future data collection, reporting, and analyses. We conclude that incidents of mortality during feeding are likely to be more common than previously assumed, and this hypothesis has implications for the ecology of persistence where populations are impacted by changing trophic environments.  相似文献

T lymphocytes can undergo an activation/proliferation response or an apoptotic response following T cell receptor engagement. The choice between these outcomes is dictated by the activation state of the T lymphocyte, the presence of interleukin-2 and the strength of the T cell receptor stimulus. Specifically, when quiescent cells encounter effectively presented antigen they are activated and begin to proliferate. In contrast, activated cells, moving through the cell cycle under the influence of IL-2, undergo apoptosis upon reencountering antigen. Both the tumour necrosis factor receptor and CD95 (FAS) are known to participate in mediating this cell death. Genetic defects in the molecules of the lymphocyte death pathway (CD95, FAS ligand, IL-2 receptor) lead to syndromes of autoimmunity and dysregulated lymphocyte homeostasis. An understanding of the principles of the autocrine feedback death model can provide the rationale basis for effective antigen specific modulation of T cell mediated disease processes.  相似文献

An evaluation of ‘rapid review’ as a method of quality control of cervical smears using the AxioHOME miscroscope One method of quality control which has recently been recommended by professional bodies in the UK is the ‘rapid review’ method. This involves the microscopic 30 s review of all negative cervical smears with the intention of flagging potential missed abnormalities. Although it has been suggested that rapid review is better than 10% random rescreening of negative smears, the efficiency and efficacy of this method of quality control have not been thoroughly evaluated. We have used the AxioHOME system, which can record the area of a slide covered and the screening time, to investigate slide coverage during rapid review quality control, as performed by 15 cytoscreeners and MLSOs reviewing a test set of 22 slides each. The test set comprised 18 negative slides, three positive slides, and one unsatisfactory slide. We have recorded two distinct methods of rapid review in use amongst cytotechnologists, the step method and the whole slide method. The data show that rapid review takes longer on average than the recommended 30 s, the mean screening times being 76 s and 82 s for the step and whole slide methods, respectively. Abnormal smears were missed on three of 15 occasions by the step method (sensitivity 80%, positive predictive value 85%), and on seven of 30 occasions by the whole slide method (sensitivity 76.6%, positive predictive value 45%). However, the 95% confidence intervals were wide (57.7–90.7% for the step method, and 51.9–95.7% for the whole slide method). Analysis of scanning tracks and screening rates shows significant flaws in the methodology of rapid review. Abnormal cells were not identified, although dyskaryotic cells were included in the scanning track on nine occasions, seven using the whole slide method and two using the step method. On one occasion (using the step method) abnormal cells were not identified because they were not included in the scanning track. Further research is in progress to determine optimal methods of rapid review, and whether the rapid review technique is as effective as automated screening systems for quality assurance in cytology. Evaluation de la technique de ‘Relecture Rapide’ comme méthode de contrôle de qualité des frottis cervico-utérins, à l'aide du microscope AxioHOME Une des méthodes de contrôle de qualité récemment recommandée par le corps professionnel du Royaume Uni est la méthode dite de ‘relecture rapide’. Cette méthode consiste en une deuxième lecture d'une durée de trente secondes de tous les frottis cervicaux négatifs et dont l'objectif est de détecter les anomalies ayant pu échapper au premier examen. Bien qu'il ait été suggéré que cette méthode de relecture rapide soit meilleure que la relecture de 10% des frottis négatifs tirés au sort, le rendement et l'efficacité de cette méthode de contrôle de qualité n'ont pas été évalués complètement. Nous avons utilisé le système AxioHOME capable d'enregistrer la plage de la lame qui a été explorée ainsi que le temps de lecture afin d'étudier la surface explorée au cours de cette relecture rapide telle qu'elle a pu être pratiquée par quinze cytotechniciens et MLSOs, chacun ayant relu une série test de vingt deux lames. Cette série test comprenait dix huit lames négatives, trois lames positives et un frottis non satisfaisant. Nous avons noté que les cytotechniciens utilisaient deux méthodes de relecture rapide différentes, la méthode ‘pas à pas’ et la méthode ‘globale’. Les données montrent que la relecture rapide prend, en moyenne, un temps supérieur aux trente secondes recommandées, la moyenne des temps de lecture étant de 76 secondes et de 82 secondes respectivement pour la méthode ‘pas à pas’ et la méthode ‘globale’. Les anomalies n'ont pas été détectées dans trois cas sur quinze par la méthode ‘pas à pas’ (sensibilité 80%, valeur prédictive positive 85%), et dans 7 cas sur 30 par la méthode globale (sensibilité 76,6%, valeur prédictive positive 45%). Toutefois, l'intervalle de confiance à 95% est important (57,7%-90,7% pour la méthode ‘pas à pas’ et 51,9%-95,7% pour la méthode globale). L'analyse des surfaces balayées et des taux de détection montre des points faibles significatifs de cette méthodologie de relecture rapide. Mit Hilfe des AxioHOME-Mikroskops ist es möglich sowohl die ausgewertete Fläche, als auch die erforderliche Zeit zu erfassen. 15 Auswerter prüften mit der Methode jeweils einen Testsatz von 22 Präparaten. Er enhielt 18 negative, 3 positive und 1 nichtauswertbaren Abstrich. Getestet wurden zwei verschiedene Vorgehensweisen: die schrittweise und die das ganze Präparat erfassende. Beide erfordern mehr Zeit als 30 Sekunden; der mittlere Zeitaufwand betrug für die Schrittmethode 76 und für die Ganzheitsmethode 82 Sekunden. Die Schrittmethode verfehlte 3/15 Anomalien (Sensitivität 80%, positiver prädiktiver Wert 85%), die Ganzheitsmethode 7/30 (Sensitivität 76,6%, positiver prädiktiver Wert 45%). Der 95% Konfi denzbereich reichte für die Schrittmethode von 57,5–90,7% und für die Ganzheitsmethode von 51,9–95,7%). Die Analyse deckt wesentliche Schwachstellen des Rapid Review-Verfahrens auf. In 9 Fällen lagen nicht erkannte Zellatypien in den kontroll ierten Bahnen (7 bei des Schrittmethode, 2 bei der Ganzheitsmethode). Einmal lagen sie bei der Schrittmethode ausserhalb der geprüften Bahnen. Weitere Studien werden prüfen ab das Rapid Review-Verfahren automatisierten Systemen vergleichbar ist.  相似文献

The soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines, is one of the most economically important pathogens of soybean. Effective management of the nematode is often dependent on the planting of resistant soybean cultivars. During the past 40 years, more than 60 soybean genotypes and plant introductions (PI) have been reported as resistant to H. glycines. About 130 modern soybean cultivars registered in the United States are resistant to certain races of H. glycines. Several resistance genes have been identified and genetically mapped; however, resistance levels in many soybean cultivars are not durable. Some older cultivars are no longer resistant to certain H. glycines populations in many production areas, especially if a soybean monoculture has been practiced. Past soybean registration reports show that all resistant cultivars developed in public institutions from the mid-1960s to the present have been derived from five PIs. This narrow genetic background is fragile. To further complicate the issue, soybean-H. glycines genetic interactions are complex and poorly understood. Studies to identify soybean resistance genes sometimes have overlapped, and the same genes may have been reported several times and designated by different names. Nevertheless, many potential resistance genes in existing germplasm resources have not yet been characterized. Clearly, it is necessary to identify new resistance genes, develop more precise selection methods, and integrate these resistance genes into new cultivars. Rational deployment of resistant cultivars is critical to future sustained soybean production.  相似文献

This paper 1) reviews improvements and new approaches in methodologies for estimating biological N2 fixation (BNF) in wetland soils, 2) summarizes earlier quantitative estimates and recent data, and 3) discusses the contribution of BNF to N balance in wetland-rice culture.Measuring acetylene reducing activity (ARA) is still the most popular method for assessing BNF in rice fields. Recent studies confirm that ARA measurements present a number of problems that may render quantitative extrapolations questionable. On the other hand, few comparative measures show ARA's potential as a quantitative estimate. Methods for measuring photodependent and associative ARA in field studies have been standardized, and major progress has been made in sampling procedures. Standardized ARA measurements have shown significant differences in associative N2 fixation among rice varieties.The 15N dilution method is suitable for measuring the percentage of N derived from the atmosphere (% Ndfa) in legumes and rice. In particular, the 15N dilution technique, using available soil N as control, appears to be a promising method for screening rice varieties for ability to utilize biologically fixed N. Attempts to adapt the 15N dilution method to aquatic N2 fixers (Azolla and blue-green algae [BGA]) encountered difficulties due to the rapid change in 15N enrichment of the water.Differences in natural 15N abundance have been used to show differences among plant organs and species or varieties in rice and Azolla, and to estimate Ndfa by Azolla, but the method appears to be semi-quantitative.Recent pot experiments using stabilized 15N-labelled soil or balances in pots covered with black cloth indicate a contribution of 10–30 kg N ha-1 crop-1 by heterotrophic BNF in flooded planted soil with no or little N fertilizer used.Associative BNF extrapolated from ARA and 15N incorporation range from 1 to 7 kg N ha-1 crop-1. Straw application increases heterotrophic and photodependent BNF. Pot experiments show N gains of 2–4 mg N g-1 straw added at 10 tons ha-1.N2 fixation by BGA has been almost exclusively estimated by ARA and biomass measurements. Estimates by ARA range from a few to 80 kg N ha-1 crop-1 (average 27 kg). Recent extensive measurements show extrapolated values of about 20 kg N ha-1 crop-1 in no-N plots, 8 kg in plots with broadcast urea, and 12 kg in plots with deep-placed urea.Most information on N2 fixed by Azolla and legume green manure comes from N accumulation measurements and determination of % Ndfa. Recent trials in an international network show standing crops of Azolla averaging 30–40 kg N ha-1 and the accumulation of 50–90 kg N ha-1 for two crops of Azolla grown before and after transplanting rice. Estimates of % Ndfa in Azolla by 15N dilution and delta 15N methods range from 51 to 99%. Assuming 50–80% Ndfa in legume green manures, one crop can provide 50–100 kg N ha-1 in 50 days. Few balance studies in microplots or pots report extrapolated N gains of 150–250 kg N ha-1 crop-1.N balances in long-term fertility experiments range from 19 to 98 kg N ha-1 crop-1 (average 50 kg N) in fields with no N fertilizer applied. The problems encountered with ARA and 15N methods have revived interest in N balance studies in pots. Balances are usually highest in flooded planted pots exposed to light and receiving no N fertilizer; extrapolated values range from 16 to 70 kg N ha-1 crop-1 (average 38 kg N). A compilation of balance experiments with rice soil shows an average balance of about 30 kg N ha-1 crop-1 in soils where no inorganic fertilizer N was applied.Biological N2 fixation by individual systems can be estimated more or less accurately, but total BNF in a rice field has not yet been estimated by measuring simultaneously the activities of the various components in situ. As a result, it is not clear if the activities of the different N2-fixing systems are independent or related. A method to estimate in situ the contribution of N2 fixed to rice nutrition is still not available. Dynamics of BNF during the crop cycle is known for indigenous agents but the pattern of fixed N availability to rice is known only for a few green manure crops.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo describe the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in Latin Americaand the Caribbean (LAC), through systematic review and meta-analysis by age groups and gender.MethodsSystematic review and meta-analysis of the population-based observational epidemiological studies carried out in LAC, focused on the prevalence of H. pylori and published until March, 2018. The databases utilized in the search were MEDLINE, SCIELO andPUBMED. The prevalence described in the meta-analysis and 95% confidence intervals were estimated by the random effects model, and weighted by the size of the study.ResultsThe 22 selected studies were carried out in 14 countries of LAC, and included 24,178 individuals. The studies were conducted between 1987 and 2012, and all were representative of at least one city. The prevalence of H. pylori infection was 57.57% (CI95%:50.43;64.72) for all ages; in children and adolescents the prevalence was 48.36% (CI95%:38.03;58.70) and in adults 69.26%(CI95%:64.54;76.99). No differences were observed regarding sex.ConclusionPrevalence of H. pylori infection in LAC is high for all age groups. These data reinforce the necessity of actions towards the prevention and treatment of H. pylori infection for all age groups. Treating H pylori infection in young ages probably will reduce gastric cancer incidence in the future.  相似文献

Scientists seeking to conduct research with human subjects must first submit their proposals to research ethics committees (Institutional Review Boards [IRBs], in the United States). Some of these studies pose risks to “bystanders,” i.e., people who may be affected by the research but who are not enrolled as study subjects. Should IRBs expand their scope to include oversight over possible harms to bystanders as well as research subjects? This paper presents arguments against this step. Prior review of research with human subjects, despite its evident burden on the research enterprise, is a necessary caution, because the tension between the objectives of humane treatment of research subjects and sound scientific design and procedure has in the past led to serious abuses. This rationale is inapplicable in the case of bystanders. Moreover, in view of the many and varied effects of both research practices and scientific advances on the broader public over time, those who may be considered to be “bystanders” may potentially expand without limit; requiring IRBs to anticipate these distant and long-term effects as part of prior ethical review could greatly increase its burden and its deterrent effect on research. While conducting research without concern for serious potential harm to bystanders may be irresponsible and unethical, expanding the scope of prior review by IRBs to include risks to bystanders is not required by the principles governing human subjects research, and the costs and burdens of this expansion may outweigh any expected gains.  相似文献

Much of the similarities of the tissue characteristics, pathologies and mechanisms of heterotopic ossification (HO) formation are shared between HO of tendon and ligament (HOTL). Unmet need and no effective treatment has been developed for HOTL, primarily attributable to poor understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms. HOTL forms via endochondral ossification, a common process of most kinds of HO. HOTL is a dynamic pathologic process that includes trauma/injury, inflammation, mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) recruitment, chondrogenic differentiation and, finally, ossification. A variety of signal pathways involve HOTL with multiple roles in different stages of HO formation, and here in this review, we summarize the progress and provide an up-to-date understanding of HOTL.  相似文献

Cell–cell adhesion molecules have critically important roles in the early events of reproduction including gamete transport, sperm–oocyte interaction, embryonic development, and implantation. Major adhesion molecules involved in reproduction include cadherins, integrins, and disintegrin and metalloprotease domain‐containing (ADAM) proteins. ADAMs on the surface of sperm adhere to integrins on the oocyte in the initial stages of sperm–oocyte interaction and fusion. Cadherins act in early embryos to organize the inner cell mass and trophectoderm. The trophoblast and uterine endometrial epithelium variously express cadherins, integrins, trophinin, and selectin, which achieve apposition and attachment between the elongating conceptus and uterine epithelium before implantation. An overview of the major cell–cell adhesion molecules is presented and this is followed by examples of how adhesion molecules help shape early reproductive events. The argument is made that a deeper understanding of adhesion molecules and reproduction will inform new strategies that improve embryo survival and increase the efficiency of natural mating and assisted breeding in cattle.  相似文献

The Mesozoic family Procercopidae is widely treated as the ancient group of Cercopoidea and a transitional unit to recent lineages, but its evolution and diversity are vague due to fragmentary fossil record and confusing taxonomic history. Herein, an extensive taxonomic review of Procercopidae is presented and some new fossils are reported from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation of NE China. As a result, Chengdecercopis Hong, 1983 is transferred from Procercopidae to Sinoalidae; Procercopis longipennis Becker-Migdisova, 1962 and P shawanensis Zhang, Wang and Zhang, 2003 are transferred to Procercopina Martynov, 1937, resulting in Procercopina longipennis (Becker-Migdisova, 1962), comb. n. and P shawanensis (Zhang, Wang and Zhang, 2003), comb. n.; Luanpingia senjituensis Hong, 1984 is transferred to Stellularis Chen, Yao and Ren, 2015, leading to Stellulari senjituensis (Hong, 1984), comb. n.; Anthoscytina macula Hu, Yao and Ren, 2014 is transferred to Sinocercopis Hong, 1982, and Sunoscytinopteris (Scytinopteridae) and Cathaycixius (Cixiidae) are treated as junior homonym names of Sinocercopis, leading to Sinocercopis macula (Hu, Yao and Ren, 2014), comb. n., S lushangfenensis (Hong, 1984), comb. n., S pustulosis (Ren, 1995), comb. n., and S trinervis (Ren, 1995), comb. n. Additionally, two new species are erected: Stellularis bineuris Chen and Wang, sp. n. and S minutus Chen and Wang, sp. n. Our cladistic analysis based on wing (tegmen and hind wing) characteristics recovers the high-level relationships within Cercopoidea: Sinoalidae + (Procercopidae + (Cercopionidae + modern cercopoids)). Within the family Procercopidae, the cladistic analysis reveals that the Middle to Late Jurassic Titanocercopis and Jurocercopis and the Cretaceous Cretocercopis occupy the basal position, and a gradual change in wing venation can be recognized from the Early Jurassic Procercopis and Procercopina to the Jurassic Anthoscytina, and then to the Cretaceous Stellularis and Sinocercopis. The two Cretaceous genera, sharing wing traits with extant cercopoids, likely represent transitional forms between Procercopidae and recent Cercopoidea; however, they are very similar to their Jurassic relatives in body structures, suggesting it is applicable to attribute them to Procercopidae. Furthermore, our analysis suggests that the extinction of Procercopidae and the origin and early diversification of modern Cercopoidea approximately coincided with the rise and explosive radiation of angiosperms in the late Early Cretaceous and onwards.  相似文献
