A probability‐based method is presented for assessing the reliability of synergistic systems and their ability to cope with the uncertainties often associated with two of a company's main types of activities: those carried out by the manufacturing department, and those carried out by the storage department. This method is based on a model focusing on the dynamic simulation of synergistic flows in terms of the mass balance. It differs from previous material flow analysis tools, which do not take into account the temporary failures occurring at the companies involved and the resulting loss of production capacity. The failure events occurring at any of the companies in a synergistic system may result in various levels of synergy failure and a short supply of resources for other companies. We therefore propose to identify the main factors responsible for a lack of synergy. We developed a dynamic stock simulation model for assessing the reliability of synergistic systems as well as that of the individual companies of a system before and after a synergy is set up. We first confirm the validity of this model by comparing the results with those based on the binomial theorem in system reliability analysis, and we then apply the model to the case of an industrial system. We conclude that companies involved in a synergistic system will inevitably be exposed to a higher risk of resource shortage because of the unsteady synergistic and outsourcing flows on which they depend. More efficient stock management methods would prevent the occurrence of the risks often associated with synergistic flows.  相似文献

Males and females from many species produce distinct acoustic variations of functionally identical call types. Social behavior may be primed by sex‐specific variation in acoustic features of calls. We present a series of acoustic analyses and playback experiments as methods for investigating this subject. Acoustic parameters of phee calls produced by Wied's black‐tufted‐ear marmosets (Callithrix kuhlii) were analyzed for sex differences. Discriminant function analyses showed that calls contained sufficient acoustic variation to predict the sex of the caller. Several frequency variables differed significantly between the sexes. Natural and synthesized calls were presented to male–female pairs. Calls elicited differential behavioral responses based on the sex of the caller. Marmosets became significantly more vigilant following the playback of male phee calls (both natural and synthetic) than following female phee calls. In a second playback experiment, synthesized calls were modified by independently manipulating three parameters that were known to differ between the sexes (low‐, peak‐, and end‐frequency). When end‐frequency‐modified calls were presented, responsiveness was differentiable by sex of caller but did not differ from responses to natural calls. This suggests that marmosets did not use end‐frequency to determine the sex of the caller. Manipulation of peak‐and low‐frequency parameters eliminated the discrete behavioral responses to male and female calls. Together, these parameters may be important features that encode for the sex‐specific signal. Fast-moving sports such as tennis require both players and match officials to make rapid accurate perceptual decisions about dynamic events in the visual world. Disagreements arise regularly, leading to disputes about decisions such as line calls. A number of factors must contribute to these disputes, including lapses in concentration, bias and gamesmanship. Fundamental uncertainty or variability in the sensory information supporting decisions must also play a role. Modern technological innovations now provide detailed and accurate physical information that can be compared against the decisions of players and officials. The present paper uses this psychophysical data to assess the significance of perceptual limitations as a contributor to real-world decisions in professional tennis. A detailed analysis is presented of a large body of data on line-call challenges in professional tennis tournaments over the last 2 years. Results reveal that the vast majority of challenges can be explained in a direct highly predictable manner by a simple model of uncertainty in perceptual information processing. Both players and line judges are remarkably accurate at judging ball bounce position, with a positional uncertainty of less than 40mm. Line judges are more reliable than players. Judgements are more difficult for balls bouncing near base and service lines than those bouncing near side and centre lines. There is no evidence for significant errors in localization due to image motion.  相似文献

Pheromone olfaction in the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, involves accurate distinction of compounds with similar structure and polarity. The identified sex pheromone is (7R,8S)-2-methyl-7,8-epoxyoctadecane, 1a, and a known antagonist is (7Z)-2-methyloctadec-7-ene, 4a. The first step in pheromone olfaction is binding of odorants by small, soluble pheromone-binding proteins (PBPs), found in the pheromone-sensing hairs. We have studied the molecular determinants recognized by the two PBPs found in the gypsy moth, using three pheromone/PBP binding assays. Results indicate that (i) PBPs bind analogs of the pheromone with some discrimination; (ii) PBPs experience enhancement of binding when presented with 1a or its enantiomer and 4a simultaneously; and (iii) the binding enhancement is also seen at high ligand:PBP ratios. We found no evidence of allostery, so the synergistic binding effects and the concentration effect may only be explained by multimerization of PBPs with each other, which leads to more than one population of binding sites. We suggest that the enhanced ligand binding at high ligand:PBP ratios may serve to sequester excess ligand and thereby attenuate very strong signals.  相似文献

Enhancing/interfering effect of antibiotics on endotoxin was evaluated using the endotoxin test and the cell line assay in 28SC cells that has a responsiveness consistent with that of human peripheral blood. When a total of 21 products of seven different kinds of antibiotics were tested, none showed any significant effect on the endotoxin test at its therapeutic dose. However, aminoglycosides showed a significant augmenting effect on IL-6 induction of endotoxin in 28SC cells. Detailed examination of the augmenting effect was made on spectinomycin in the in vitro cell line assay and also in the lethal endotoxin challenge assay in D -galactosamine-treated mice. Spectinomycin also enhanced the endotoxin lethality in D -galactosamine-treated mice. A kinetic analysis in endotoxin-sensitized 28SC cells revealed that the augmentation takes place as quickly as 10 min after spectinomycin treatment. Accordingly, a special caution concerning the augmenting effect was assumed necessary for the safety control of antibiotic products as well as for selecting antibiotics for the therapeutic use.  相似文献

Through repeated pairings with a tastant such as sucrose, odors are able to take on the tastant's qualities, e.g. by becoming more sweet smelling. When such odors are subsequently experienced with a sweet tastant in solution, the mixture is often given a higher sweetness rating than the tastant alone. Odor-induced taste enhancement appears to be sensitive to whether an odor-taste combination is viewed analytically as a set of discrete qualities, or synthetically as a flavor. The present research attempted to determine if adoption of these different perceptual approaches during co-exposure with sucrose would influence the extent to which an odor would become sweet smelling and subsequently enhance sweetness intensity. In Experiment 1, subjects received multiple exposures to mixtures of sucrose with low sweetness, low familiarity odors or, as a control, the odors and sucrose solutions separately. Two groups that received mixtures made intensity ratings that promoted either synthesis or analysis of the individual elements in the mixtures. The odors became sweeter smelling irrespective of group. Only adopting a synthetic strategy produced odors that enhanced sweetness in solution. However, these effects were also shown with a 'non-exposed' control odor. This could be accounted for if the single co-exposure with sucrose that all odors received in the pre-test was able to produce sweeter odors. A second experiment confirmed this prediction. Thus, while even a single co-exposure with sucrose is sufficient to produce a sweeter odor, the adoption of a synthetic perceptual strategy during the co-exposure is necessary to produce an odor that will enhance sweetness. These data are consistent with associative leaning accounts of how odors take on taste qualities and also support the interpretation that these effects reflect the central integration of odors and tastes into flavors.  相似文献

AIMS: To demonstrate that the nonlinear concentration-dependent inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to EDTA can be used to successfully model and predict the potentiation of antimicrobials by EDTA. METHODS AND RESULTS: A model used successfully to describe the concentration-dependent inhibition of bacterial growth caused by many antimicrobials was unable to describe the inhibition of P. aeruginosa by EDTA. Examination of the inhibition profiles for EDTA against P. aeruginosa revealed a biphasic inhibitory pattern suggesting different mechanisms of action at different concentrations. A modelled, two-stage inhibitory process was shown to fit the observations. This model was then used to examine the effect of combining EDTA with other antimicrobials. The apparent synergy of mixtures of EDTA with quaternary ammonium surfactants (QAC) and specific antibiotics was successfully modelled. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the QAC and that of oxacillin and cefamandole were reduced by a factor of 3-10, whereas ampicillin was reduced by a factor of 70 from an MIC of 1524 to 21 mg l(-1) in the presence of 500 mg l(-1) of EDTA. CONCLUSIONS: A nonlinear concentration-dependent inhibition of P. aeruginosa by EDTA gives rise to apparent observation of synergy with other antimicrobials. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This is a further example where the current methodology for the examination of antimicrobial synergy (the summed fractional inhibitory concentrations) leads to false conclusions.  相似文献

Aims: The in vitro antimicrobial activity of three essential oil samples of frankincense (Boswellia rivae, Boswellia neglecta and Boswellia papyrifera) and two essential oil samples of myrrh and sweet myrrh (Commiphora guidotti and Commiphora myrrha), collected from different regions of Ethiopia, was investigated independently and in combination to determine their anti‐infective properties. Methods and Results: The microdilution minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay was performed, whereby it was noted that generally Cryptococcus neoformans (MIC values in the range of 0·8–1·4 mg ml?1) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC values in the range of 0·5–1·3 mg ml?1) often appeared to be the most susceptible micro‐organisms against oils of both Boswellia and Commiphora spp. When assayed in various combinations, the frankincense and myrrh oils displayed synergistic, additive and noninteractive properties, with no antagonism noted. When investigating different ratio combinations against Bacillus cereus, the most favourable combination was between B. papyrifera and C. myrrha. The composition of the oils was determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC–MS) to document the specific chemotypes used in the study, and the chemical profiles were found to be congruent with previously reported data. Conclusions: The majority of interactions identified synergistic and additive effects, with strong synergism noted between B. papyrifera and C. myrrha. Significance and Impact of the Study: Frankincense and myrrh essential oils have been used in combination since 1500 bc ; however, no antimicrobial investigations have been undertaken to confirm their effect in combination. This study validates the enhanced efficacy when used in combination against a selection of pathogens.  相似文献

基于InVEST模型、游憩机会谱、因子分析、冷热点分析、SOFM神经网络和地形起伏度等方法,评估福州市6项生态系统服务,分析不同生态系统服务之间的权衡与协同,并阐明区域的主导服务类型和不同地形起伏度下服务簇的空间格局。结果表明: 福州市各项生态系统服务的空间异质性显著,产水、碳固持、生境质量和游憩机会供给总体较高,农产品供给和水土保持相对较弱且高低值差异明显;产水服务与文化服务存在协同关系,调节服务、支持服务与农产品供给服务之间存在权衡关系,权衡与协同高低值呈明显的空间聚集;生态系统服务簇分为郊区游憩簇、水源涵养簇、农产品供给簇、城镇生活簇和森林生态保育簇,不同地形起伏度下的服务簇组成各不相同,具有明显的空间异质性。  相似文献
