Understanding how stressors combine to affect population abundances and trajectories is a fundamental ecological problem with increasingly important implications worldwide. Generalisations about interactions among stressors are challenging due to different categorisation methods and how stressors vary across species and systems. Here, we propose using a newly introduced framework to analyse data from the last 25 years on ecological stressor interactions, for example combined effects of temperature, salinity and nutrients on population survival and growth. We contrast our results with the most commonly used existing method – analysis of variance (ANOVA) – and show that ANOVA assumptions are often violated and have inherent limitations for detecting interactions. Moreover, we argue that rescaling – examining relative rather than absolute responses – is critical for ensuring that any interaction measure is independent of the strength of single‐stressor effects. In contrast, non‐rescaled measures – like ANOVA – find fewer interactions when single‐stressor effects are weak. After re‐examining 840 two‐stressor combinations, we conclude that antagonism and additivity are the most frequent interaction types, in strong contrast to previous reports that synergy dominates yet supportive of more recent studies that find more antagonism. Consequently, measuring and re‐assessing the frequency of stressor interaction types is imperative for a better understanding of how stressors affect populations.  相似文献

Climate change is reshaping biological communities against a background of existing human pressure. Evaluating the impacts of multiple stressors on community dynamics can be particularly challenging in species‐rich ecosystems, such as coral reefs. Here, we investigate whether life‐history strategies and cotolerance to different stressors can predict community responses to fishing and temperature‐driven bleaching using a 20‐year time series of coral assemblages in Kenya. We found that the initial life‐history composition of coral taxa largely determined the impacts of bleaching and coral loss. Prior to the 1998 bleaching event, coral assemblages within no‐take marine reserves were composed of three distinct life histories – competitive, stress‐tolerant and weedy– and exhibited strong declines following bleaching with limited subsequent recovery. In contrast, fished reefs had lower coral cover, fewer genera and were composed of stress‐tolerant and weedy corals that were less affected by bleaching over the long term. Despite these general patterns, we found limited evidence for cotolerance as coral genera and life histories were variable in their sensitivities to fishing and bleaching. Overall, fishing and bleaching have reduced coral diversity and led to altered coral communities of ‘survivor’ species with stress‐tolerant and weedy life histories. Our findings are consistent with expectations that climate change interacting with existing human pressure will result in the loss of coral diversity and critical reef habitat.  相似文献

Thermostability is an important feature in industrial enzymes: it increases biocatalyst lifetime and enables reactions at higher temperatures, where faster rates and other advantages ultimately reduce the cost of biocatalysis. Here we report the thermostabilization of a chimeric fungal family 6 cellobiohydrolase (HJPlus) by directed evolution using random mutagenesis and recombination of beneficial mutations. Thermostable variant 3C6P has a half‐life of 280 min at 75°C and a T50 of 80.1°C, a ~15°C increase over the thermostable Cel6A from Humicola insolens (HiCel6A) and a ~20°C increase over that from Hypocrea jecorina (HjCel6A). Most of the mutations also stabilize the less‐stable HjCel6A, the wild‐type Cel6A closest in sequence to 3C6P. During a 60‐h Avicel hydrolysis, 3C6P released 2.4 times more cellobiose equivalents at its optimum temperature (Topt) of 75°C than HiCel6A at its Topt of 60°C. The total cellobiose equivalents released by HiCel6A at 60°C after 60 h is equivalent to the total released by 3C6P at 75°C after ~6 h, a 10‐fold reduction in hydrolysis time. A binary mixture of thermostable Cel6A and Cel7A hydrolyzes Avicel synergistically and released 1.8 times more cellobiose equivalents than the wild‐type mixture, both mixtures assessed at their respective Topt. Crystal structures of HJPlus and 3C6P, determined at 1.5 and 1.2 Å resolution, indicate that the stabilization comes from improved hydrophobic interactions and restricted loop conformations by introduced proline residues. Temporal expectation is expectation with respect to the timing of an event such as the appearance of a certain stimulus. In this paper, temporal expectancy is investigated in the context of the theory of visual attention (TVA), and we begin by summarizing the foundations of this theoretical framework. Next, we present a parametric experiment exploring the effects of temporal expectation on perceptual processing speed in cued single-stimulus letter recognition with unspeeded motor responses. The length of the cue–stimulus foreperiod was exponentially distributed with one of six hazard rates varying between blocks. We hypothesized that this manipulation would result in a distinct temporal expectation in each hazard rate condition. Stimulus exposures were varied such that both the temporal threshold of conscious perception (t0 ms) and the perceptual processing speed (v letters s−1) could be estimated using TVA. We found that the temporal threshold t0 was unaffected by temporal expectation, but the perceptual processing speed v was a strikingly linear function of the logarithm of the hazard rate of the stimulus presentation. We argue that the effects on the v values were generated by changes in perceptual biases, suggesting that our perceptual biases are directly related to our temporal expectations.  相似文献

Properties of 3-deoxy-D-arabinoheptulosonate-7-phosphate (DAHP) synthetase from Corynebacterium glutamicum were examined using the cell free extract. The optimum pH for the reaction was broad ranging from 5.5 to 7.0 and the optimum temperature was 37°C. Co2+ inhibited the enzyme activity at 20°C, whereas Co2+ apparently stimulated the enzyme activity at 37°C because the ion protected the enzyme from inactivation at 37°C. Co2+ reversed the inhibition of the enzyme activity by EDTA. The activity of DAHP synthetase was feedback inhibited only weakly by l-phenylalanine, l-tyrosine or l-tryptophan alone, but was strongly inhibited synergistically by l-phenylalanine and l-tyrosine. l-Tryptophan enhanced the inhibition by the pair of l-tyrosine and l-phenylalanine. Maximal inhibition was near 90 % in the simultaneous presence of the three amino acids. Sensitivity of the enzyme to the inhibitors was lost during the purification process of the enzyme or during the reaction at 37°C. Especially sensitivity to l-tryptophan was easily lost. Co2+ protected the enzyme from the desensitization. Mutants resistant to p-fluorophenylalanine plus l-tyrosine (or 3-aminotyrosine) had DAHP synthetase which was released from the feedback inhibition by the three amino acids. The formation of the enzyme was not affected by aromatic amino acids.  相似文献

Despite the abundance of literature on organismal responses to multiple environmental stressors, most studies have not matched the timing of experimental manipulations with the temporal pattern of stressors in nature. We test the interactive effects of diel‐cycling hypoxia with both warming and decreased salinities using ecologically realistic exposures. Surprisingly, we found no evidence of negative synergistic effects on Olympia oyster growth; rather, we found only additive and opposing effects of hypoxia (detrimental) and warming (beneficial). We suspect that diel‐cycling provided a temporal refuge that allowed physiological compensation. We also tested for latent effects of warming and hypoxia to low‐salinity tolerance using a seasonal delay between stressor events. However, we did not find a latent effect, rather a threshold survival response to low salinity that was independent of early life‐history exposure to warming or hypoxia. The absence of synergism is likely the result of stressor treatments that mirror the natural timing of environmental stressors. We provide environmental context for laboratory experimental data by examining field time series environmental data from four North American west coast estuaries and find heterogeneous environmental signals that characterize each estuary, suggesting that the potential stressor exposure to oysters will drastically differ over moderate spatial scales. This heterogeneity implies that efforts to conserve and restore oysters will require an adaptive approach that incorporates knowledge of local conditions. We conclude that studies of multiple environmental stressors can be greatly improved by integrating ecologically realistic exposure and timing of stressors found in nature with organismal life‐history traits.  相似文献

The leaky competing accumulator (LCA) is a biologically inspired model of choice. It describes the processes of leaky accumulation and competition observed in neuronal populations during choice tasks and it accounts for reaction time distributions observed in psychophysical experiments. This paper discusses recent analyses and extensions of the LCA model. First, it reviews the dynamics and examines the conditions that make the model achieve optimal performance. Second, it shows that nonlinearities of the type present in biological neurons improve performance when the number of choice alternatives increases. Third, the model is extended to value-based choice, where it is shown that nonlinearities in the value function explain risk aversion in risky choice and preference reversals in choice between alternatives characterized across multiple dimensions.  相似文献

Pytoremediaton of arsenic (As) contamination using Chinese brake fern (Pteris vittata L.), an As hyperaccumulator has proven potential because of its cost-effectiveness and environmental harmonies. Aiming to investigate the elemental correlation in Chinese brake fern, 20 elements (As, Br, Ca, Ce, Co, Cr, Eu, Fe, Hf, La, Na, Nd, K, Rb, Se, Sm, Sr, Th, Yb and Zn) were measured in the fronds and roots of the fern by neutron activation analysis. The ferns were sampled from two sites with high geogenic As levels: Zimudang (ZMD) and Lanmuchang (LMC) in Guizhou Province, China. Multivariate statistic analysis was performed to explore the interrelationship between these elements, especially between As and other elements. As was found to be positively related to K, Na, La, and Sm in both the roots and the fronds, suggesting that these four elements might operate as synergies to As during uptake and transportation processes. Se was positively related to most of the other cations measured, except in the fronds of the fern at ZMD, where Br replaced Se as positively related to the other cations. The difference of As and Se in correlation with other cationic elements suggested that the two anionic elements play different roles in elemental uptake processes. Our findings of elemental correlation highlight the importance of the anioncation balance in Chinese brake fern.  相似文献

There are many examples of individuals forming coalitions toobtain or protect a valuable resource. We present an analyticalmodel of coalition formation in which individuals seek alliancesif they judge themselves too weak to secure the resource alone.We allow coalition seeking to carry an investment cost () andlet contest outcomes depend probabilistically on the relativefighting strengths of contesting parties, with effective coalitionstrength directly proportional to combined partner strength.We identify the evolutionarily stable strength thresholds, belowwhich individuals within triads should seek a coalition. Weshow that if exceeds a critical value, then unilateral fightingover resources is an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS). Universal(3-way) coalitions are also an ESS outcome if is less thana second critical value. Both of these extreme solutions areless likely to arise, the greater the variance in fighting strengthsand the greater the benefit from dominating opponents. Our analysisalso identifies intermediate solutions in which only the weakerindividuals seek coalitions: only then can a true coalition(2 vs. 1) form. We characterize these ESSs and show that truecoalitions are more likely to arise when the effective strengthof a coalition is less than the sum of its individual strengths(antergy). Alliances in primates are characterized by antergy,high reliability of strength as a predictor of contest outcome,and high variability in strengths. These are precisely the conditionsin which in our model most favors true coalition formation.  相似文献
