In South Africa, restoration and sustainable management of historically overgrazed and degraded rangelands are promoted to increase biodiversity and ecosystem service provision. This study evaluates different land management scenarios in terms of ecosystem services in a South African rangeland, the Baviaanskloof catchment. As measured data were limited, we used simple models to quantify and map the effect of the different combination of agricultural, nature conservation and restoration practices on multiple ecosystem services. The land management scenarios were evaluated against management targets set for individual ecosystem services. Results highlight how the provision of ecosystem services is related to land management as unmanaged, pristine ecosystems provide a different mix of ecosystem services than ecosystems recently restored or managed as grazing lands. Results also indicate that historically overgrazed lands provide no forage, may retain 40% less sediment and have 38% lower biodiversity, while providing 60% more fuel wood and supplying two and half times more water (i.e. retaining less water), than pristine or restored lands. We conclude that a combination of light grazing, low input agriculture, nature conservation and restoration is the best for the sufficient provision of multiple ecosystem services. Applying such mixed management would improve biodiversity, ecotourism and maintain forage production and regulating services on farmers’ land. 对捕食风险的涵义及其对猎物动物觅食行为的影响、猎物动物面对捕食风险时的反应进行了论述。捕食风险可以简单地理解为一定时间内猎物动物被杀死的概率。当捕食风险存在时 ,动物会选择相对安全但觅食效益较低的地点觅食 ;由于死亡率和消化方面的限制 ,一般都会产生食谱收缩 ;觅食活动方式的时间格局也会因捕食风险而发生改变 ,如水生动物的昼夜垂直迁移、某些陆生动物昼行性与夜行性活动的转换、月光回避等。在与捕食者发生遭遇时 ,猎物动物的主要反应是 :①发出某些信号以阻止捕食者的追捕 ;②靠近并注视捕食者 ;③逃逸 ;④在一定的时间恢复觅食活动。在以往的研究中 ,对捕食者种类已经有了较多的了解 ,而对猎物如何判断捕食者丰富度信息、估计风险程度等方面则知之甚少 ;同时 ,对捕食风险水平的调控、对多种因素的综合分析也较少涉及。在今后的研究中 ,还应该考虑研究的尺度问题 ,因为在不同尺度的环境条件下 ,猎物动物对于捕食风险的反应可能大相径庭。 相似文献

Aim, Scope and Background When materials are recycled they are made available for use for several future life cycles and can therefore replace virgin
material more than just once. In order to analyse the optimal waste management system for a given material, the authors have
analysed the material flows in a life cycle perspective. It is important to distinguish this approach for material flow analysis
for a given material from life cycle analysis of products. A product life cycle analysis analyses the product system from
cradle to grave, but uses some form of allocation in order to separate the life cycle of one product from another in cases
where component materials are recycled. This paper does not address allocation of burdens between different product systems,
but rather focuses on methodology for decision making for waste management systems where the optimal waste management system
for a given material is analysed. The focus here is the flow of the given material from cradle (raw material extraction) to
grave (the material, or its inherent energy, is no longer available for use). The limitation on the number of times materials
can be recycled is set by either the recycling rate, or the technical properties of the recycled material.
Main Features This article describes a mathematical geometric progression approach that can be used to expand the system boundaries and
allow for recycling a given number of times. Case studies for polyethylene and paperboard are used to illustrate the importance
of including these aspects when part of the Goal and Scope for the LCA study is to identify which waste management treatment
options are best for a given material. The results and discussion examine the different conclusions that can be reached about
which waste management option is most environmentally beneficial when the higher burdens and benefits of recycling several
times are taken into account.
Results In order to assess the complete picture of the burdens and benefits arising from recycling the system boundaries must be expanded
to allow for recycling many times. A mathematical geometric progression approach manages to take into account the higher burdens
and benefits arising from recycling several times. If one compares different waste management systems, e.g. energy recovery
with recycling, without expanding the system to include the complete effects of material recycling one can reach a different
conclusion about which waste management option is preferred.
Conclusions When the purpose of the study is to compare different waste management options, it is important that the system boundaries
are expanded in order to include several recycling loops where this is a physical reality. The equations given in this article
can be used to include these recycling loops. The error introduced by not expanding the system boundaries can be significant.
This error can be large enough to change the conclusions of a comparative study, such that material recycling followed by
incineration is a much better option than waste incineration directly.
Recommendations and Outlook When comparing waste management solutions, where material recycling is a feasible option, it is important to include the relevant
number of recycling loops to ensure that the benefits of material recycling are not underestimated. The methodology presented
in this article should be used in future comparative studies for strategic decision-making for waste management. The approach
should not be used for LCAs for product systems without due care, as this could lead to double counting of the benefits of
recycling (depending on the goal and scope of the analysis). For materials where the material cycle is more of a closed loop
and one cannot truly say that recycled materials replace virgin materials, a more sophisticated approach will be required,
taking into account the fact that recycled materials will only replace a certain proportion of virgin materials. 相似文献

Lack of temperature sensation of myoelectric prosthetic hand limits the daily activities of amputees.To this end,a non-invasive temperature sensation method is proposed to train amputees to sense temperature with psychophysical sensory substitution.In this study,22 healthy participants took part besides 5 amputee participants.The duration time of the study was 31 days with five test steps according to the Leitner technique.An adjustable temperature mug and a Peltier were used to change the temperature of the water/phantom digits to induce temperature to participants.Also,to isolate the surround-ings and show colors,a Virtual Reality(VR)glass was employed.The statistical results conducted are based on the response of participants with questionnaire method.Using Chi-square tests,it is concluded that participants answer the experiment significantly correctly using the Leitner technique(P value<0.05).Also,by applying the"Repeated Measures ANOVA",it is noticed that the time of numbness felt by participants had significant(P value<0.001)difference.Participants could remember lowest and highest temperatures significantly better than other temperatures(P value<0.001);furthermore,the well-trained amputee participant practically using the prosthesis with 72.58%could identify object's temperature with only once time experimenting the color temperature. 相似文献

The current study focuses on identification and prioritization of the most important risks affecting a gas power plant located in southern Iran that was selected as a case study. After identifying risky activities, plant operations, and natural disasters, a Delphi questionnaire was prepared to specify crisis and accident-prone centers that could lead to the plant's destruction. After analyzing the questionnaires, the final criteria were determined. Subsequently, multi-criteria decision-making methods including technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) were applied to prioritize the identified criteria. The relative weights of the criteria were calculated using the eigenvector method in the environment of MATLAB and EXPERT CHOICE. In some cases, there was no correlation between the obtained results, resulting in a novel integrated technique consisting of three methods: average, Borda, and Copeland was used to reach a consensus for prioritizing the criteria. The risk assessment results indicate that gas and oil pipes, dust storm, and terrorism have the first to third priorities among the other risks. Some strategies are proposed to control and mitigate the identified risks. 相似文献

The effects of high-peak-power, pulsed microwaves on a time perception and discrimination task were studied in rats. Exposures were performed with the TEMPO exposure system, which produces an 80 nanosecond pulse with peak-power levels in excess of 700 megawatts. The ability to expose animals to such fields within a controlled environment is unique. As determined by calorimetry, a maximal, whole-body-averaged, specificabsorption rate of 0.072 W/kg was produced. Thus exposures were well below a recommended SAR limit of 0.4 W/kg. Power levels of transmitted microwaves were varied over a 50 dB range to obtain ascending and descending dose-response functions for each of the behavioral measures. Measures of time perception, response bias, and total trials did not change with power level. Dose-response effects were observed for discriminability (ability to distinguish between durations), session time, and trial completions (null responses, failures to respond on a trial). Covarying sound and X-ray exposures produced by TEMPO did not reliably correlate with the observed microwave effects. The observation of repeatable dose-response effects on discriminability and null responses indicates that the microwave exposures were affecting cognitive function in the rats, particularly the decision-making process. © 1993 wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Recently, statistical analyses of demographic datasets have come to play an important role for studies into the evolution of human life history. In the first part of this paper, I highlight fertility decline, an evolutionarily paradoxical phenomenon in terms of fitness maximization. Then, I conduct a literature review regarding the effects of socioeconomic status on the number of offspring, especially in modern developed, (post-)industrial, and low-fertility societies. Although a non-positive relationship between them has often been recognized as a general feature of fertility decline, there actually exists a great deal of variation. Based on the review, I discuss the association between socioeconomic success and reproductive success, and tackle an evolutionary question as to why people seek higher socioeconomic success that would not directly lead to higher reproductive success. It has been suggested that, in modern competitive environments, parents should set a higher value on their investment in children, and aim to have a smaller number of high-quality children. Also, parents would maintain higher socioeconomic status for themselves so as to provide high-levels of investment in their children. In the second part, I broadly consider seemingly evolutionarily (mal)adaptive outcomes besides fertility decline, including child abuse, menopause, and suicide. The integration of the major three approaches to human behavioral and psychological research (behavioral ecology, evolutionary psychology, and cultural evolution) could lead to a deeper understanding. I provide a model for the integrated approach. Rich empirical evidence accumulated in demographic studies, especially longitudinal and cross-cultural resources, can assist to develop a theoretical framework. 相似文献
