This study investigated the effects of pelvic suspension and slaughter age on longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) from 40 heifers with at least 75% Angus breeding. A total of 20 heifers were slaughtered directly from pasture at 18 months of age, and carcass sides were hung either by the Achilles tendon or the pelvic bone. The other 20 heifers were assigned to an additional winter housing period and slaughtered at 22 months of age; carcass sides were hung only by Achilles suspension. All carcasses were electrically stimulated and assessed according to the EUROP carcass classification system. In addition, the LTL muscles were aged for 7 or 14 days before meat quality was evaluated for intramuscular fat (IMF), drip loss, colour, shear force, compression and sensory analysis. The 22-month-old heifers were heavier, fatter and had more IMF than 18-month-old heifers. Conformation scores (muscling) did not differ between the two slaughter groups. Pelvic suspension reduced both between- and within-animal variation for peak force, total energy and compression peak force. For the 18-month-old heifers, pelvic suspension also decreased peak force, total energy and compression variables for the LTL muscles from both ageing periods, whereas Achilles-suspended samples had lower shear force values only at day 14. Sensory analysis showed that pelvic-suspended sides had greater tenderness, lower bite resistance, less threadiness, higher juiciness and meat flavour and less visible marbling than meat from Achilles-suspended sides. Pelvic-suspended sides at 18 months of age were similar in peak force and total energy values to the 22-month-old heifers. The importance of ageing the Achilles-suspended sides was more obvious for samples from 18-month-old heifers than from the 22-month-old animals. The correlations between the different instrumental measurements and sensory tenderness were considerably higher for carcasses suspended by the Achilles tendon (r = −0.55 to 0.20) than for those hung by the pelvic bone (r = −0.25 to 0.19). More correlations between sensory-evaluated tenderness and shear variables were significant after 7 days (n = 6) of ageing than after 14 days (n = 4) of ageing. This study clearly shows the benefits of pelvic suspension, which reduces the need for additional feeding after pasture.  相似文献

PurposeWe aimed to determine if state of bladder fullness affects pelvic floor muscle activation in healthy women without urogenital symptoms.Materials and methodsTwenty-three nulliparous, continent female participants were recruited to participate. Women were randomized to begin the protocol with either an empty (EF) or a full (FE) bladder. Tonic and maximal voluntary pelvic floor muscle electromyographic activity were measured in three states of bladder fullness (empty, full and uncomfortably full). Electromyographic signal amplitudes were compared among bladder states using separate two-way repeated-measures analyses of variance including bladder state and test order as main effects as well as the interaction between bladder state and test order.ResultsTonic activity of the pelvic floor muscles was significantly higher in the full and uncomfortably full bladder states compared to when the bladder was empty (p < 0.005). Maximum voluntary electromyographic activation was unaffected by state of bladder fullness (p = 0.713).ConclusionsConsistent with studies in which the bladder was filled through saline infusion, these results suggest that tonic activity of the PFMs is higher when the bladder is full compared to when it is empty. However once the bladder is moderately full, tonic PFM activity does not increase with increases in bladder volume.  相似文献

Nicein/kalinin (laminin-5) is a heterotrimeric laminin-like adhesion protein, which is secreted at the basement membrane of subsets of epithelia and is involved in the etiology of junctional epidermolysis bullosa, a severe human blistering disease characterized by disadhesion of epidermis from dermis.

cDNA clones encoding the three chains of mouse nicein and antibodies specific to each polypeptide were used to examine the expression of the protein in the developing mouse embryo from 10.5 day post coitum to 7 days after birth. At various stages of development, co-expression of the three chains of nicein was observed in amnion, skin, and in epithelia of respiratory, urinary and digestive systems. High level expression of nicein was seen in enamel-secreting ameloblasts in developing teeth. Cell-specific distribution of nicein was also detected in other specialized tissues representative of the three primary embryonic germ layers with prominent secretory or protective functions. Differential and focal expression of nicein subunits was observed in the choroid plexus and the floor plate of the neural tube. Messenger for the heavy chain of nicein was detected in the floor plate, where mouse s-laminin messengers were also found. This suggests that nicein genes may play a role in the migration and polarization of motor neurons in the developing spinal cord.  相似文献

The term ‘obstetrical dilemma’ was coined by Washburn in 1960 to describe the trade-off between selection for a larger birth canal, permitting successful passage of a big-brained human neonate, and the smaller pelvic dimensions required for bipedal locomotion. His suggested solution to these antagonistic pressures was to give birth prematurely, explaining the unusual degree of neurological and physical immaturity, or secondary altriciality, observed in human infants. This proposed trade-off has traditionally been offered as the predominant evolutionary explanation for why human childbirth is so challenging, and inherently risky, compared to that of other primates. This perceived difficulty is likely due to the tight fit of fetal to maternal pelvic dimensions along with the convoluted shape of the birth canal and a comparatively low degree of ligamentous flexibility. Although the ideas combined under the obstetrical dilemma hypothesis originated almost a century ago, they have received renewed attention and empirical scrutiny in the last decade, with some researchers advocating complete rejection of the hypothesis and its assumptions. However, the hypothesis is complex because it presently captures several, mutually non-exclusive ideas: (i) there is an evolutionary trade-off resulting from opposing selection pressures on the pelvis; (ii) selection favouring a narrow pelvis specifically derives from bipedalism; (iii) human neonates are secondarily altricial because they are born relatively immature to ensure that they fit through the maternal bony pelvis; (iv) as a corollary to the asymmetric selection pressure for a spacious birth canal in females, humans evolved pronounced sexual dimorphism of pelvic shape. Recently, the hypothesis has been challenged on both empirical and theoretical grounds. Here, we appraise the original ideas captured under the ‘obstetrical dilemma’ and their subsequent evolution. We also evaluate complementary and alternative explanations for a tight fetopelvic fit and obstructed labour, including ecological factors related to nutrition and thermoregulation, constraints imposed by the stability of the pelvic floor or by maternal and fetal metabolism, the energetics of bipedalism, and variability in pelvic shape. This reveals that human childbirth is affected by a complex combination of evolutionary, ecological, and biocultural factors, which variably constrain maternal pelvic form and fetal growth. Our review demonstrates that it is unwarranted to reject the obstetrical dilemma hypothesis entirely because several of its fundamental assumptions have not been successfully discounted despite claims to the contrary. As such, the obstetrical dilemma remains a tenable hypothesis that can be used productively to guide evolutionary research.  相似文献

Kauri dieback, caused by Phytophthora agathidicida, is a biotic disturbance that poses a recent threat to the survival of kauri (Agathis australis) forests in New Zealand. Previous studies have shown that throughfall and stemflow play an important role in the kauri forests’ internal nutrient cycle. However, the effects of P. agathidicida infection on canopy and forest floor nutrient fluxes in kauri forests remain unknown. Here, we measured throughfall, stemflow and forest floor water yield, nutrient (potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, silicon, sulfur, sodium, iron) concentrations and fluxes of ten kauri trees differing in soil P. agathidicida DNA concentration, and health status. We did not observe an effect of soil P. agathidicida DNA concentration on throughfall, stemflow, and forest floor water yield. Throughfall and forest floor nutrient concentrations and fluxes decreased (up to 50%) with increasing soil P. agathidicida DNA concentration. We found significant effects on potassium and manganese fluxes in throughfall; calcium and silicon fluxes in forest floor leachate. A decline in canopy and forest floor nutrient fluxes may result in soil nutrient imbalances, which in turn may negatively impact forest productivity and may increase the susceptibility of trees to future pathogen infection in these ecologically unique kauri forests. Given our findings and the increasing spread of Phytophthora species worldwide, research on the underlying physiological mechanisms linking dieback and plant–soil nutrient fluxes is critical.  相似文献

Beyond its role in the conversion of androgens to estrogens, the expression of aromatase could influence on the estrogenic signalling in targeted tissues. Considering the well‐defined biochemical and physiological differences between the pubococcygeus (Pcm) and bulbospongiosus (Bsm) muscles in female rabbits, it is presently hypothesized that the aromatase expression is differentially linked to the estrogen sensitivity of each muscle. To this end, serum estradiol levels and the aromatase expression, presence of ERα and ERβ and morphometry were evaluated in the Pcm and Bsm of female rabbits allocated in control, ovariectomized (OVX) and OVX treated with estradiol benzoate (OVX + EB) groups. Aromatase expression was high in the Pcm. Independently to serum estradiol, ovariectomy increased aromatase expression in the Pcm while decreased it in the Bsm. The EB treatment avoided the effect of ovariectomy only in the Pcm. The number of immunoreactive nuclei anti‐ERα and anti‐ERβ was high in the Pcm of OVX and OVX + EB rabbits, while those in the Bsm remained unchanged. The number of peripheral nuclei per fibre and the cross‐sectional area‐to‐myonucleus ratio were modified only in the Pcm. Our findings support aromatase expression in the Pcm, and Bsm of rabbits is differentially linked to estrogenic sensitivity of each muscle. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper aims to make a review on the current segmentation algorithms used for medical images. Algorithms are classified according to their principal methodologies, namely the ones based on thresholds, the ones based on clustering techniques and the ones based on deformable models. The last type is focused on due to the intensive investigations into the deformable models that have been done in the last few decades. Typical algorithms of each type are discussed and the main ideas, application fields, advantages and disadvantages of each type are summarised. Experiments that apply these algorithms to segment the organs and tissues of the female pelvic cavity are presented to further illustrate their distinct characteristics. In the end, the main guidelines that should be considered for designing the segmentation algorithms of the pelvic cavity are proposed.  相似文献

Aim, Scope, and Background Industrial and institutional (I and I) floor maintenance activities require regular use of chemical products and equipment. Different floor care systems require different maintenance products, activities, and frequencies which consume different levels of energy and material for product manufacturing, maintenance, and application. Therefore, selecting between floor maintenance products and programs requires comprehensive analysis of the entire floor maintenance system as well as any site-specific factors that can influence human and environmental health. In this paper, a probabilistic model for comparing the environmental life cycle implications of I and I floor maintenance programs is presented. The primary interest is in comparing programs that use different water-based acrylic floor finishes and in particular, programs using zinc-containing floor finishes compared to zinc-free floor finish systems. Zinc, used in some acrylic polymers as a polymer cross-linking agent, is regulated in some communities to minimize its impact on the aquatic environment. Method The life cycle assessment (LCA) model was developed in compliance with the ISO 14040 series of standards [1]. Furthermore, uncertain input variables were defined as probabilistic distributions and Latin Hypercube Sampling was used to propagate uncertainty through the model. The scope of the study includes the full life cycle of the materials, supplies, equipment, and activities associated with performing floor maintenance. The effects of maintaining higher lighting and temperature levels while performing floor maintenance are estimated using building energy system analysis. The life cycle inventory (LCI) element of the LCA was developed using product-specific data, publicly available data, and established life cycle inventory databases. Life cycle impact assessment was conducted using the Eco-Indicator 99 [2] and Impact 2002+ [3,4] impact assessment methods. Results Two floor maintenance scenarios were developed and analyzed to compare the environmental impact of programs using zinc-containing and zinc-free floor finishes. The results discussed herein are presented for a hypothetical retail store located in the Midwest region of the United States. Given the scenarios examined, zinc-free floor finish systems reduced the release of zinc ions to the environment, but the overall impact in all life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) categories was greater for the zincfree floor finish system primarily due to the increased frequency of maintenance. Discussion The impacts associated with operating the facility were orders of magnitude higher than those associated with producing or using floor care products, supplies, or equipment. This leads to the conclusion that for critical impacts, floor care product development should focus research efforts on innovative products that reduce application and maintenance time if significant reduction in these impacts is sought. Conclusions Adopting a stochastic modeling approach enabled incorporation of parameter uncertainty and analysis of uncertainty in model results. In the scenario shown here, the magnitude of overall impact in all LCIA categories was greater for the zinc-free floor finish system than the zinc-containing floor finish system. Perspectives Use of decision modeling software provided flexibility for developing scenarios and assessing floor maintenance programs under various operational and site-specific conditions.  相似文献

Most of computer-assisted planning systems need to determine the anatomical axis based on the anterior pelvic plane (APP). We analysed that our new system is more reproducible for determination of APP than previous methods. A pelvic model bone and two subjects suffering from hip osteoarthritis were evaluated. Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) images were scanned with various rotations by MDCT scanner. The pelvic rotation was calibrated using silhouette images. APP was determined by an optimisation technique. The values of variation of APP caused by pelvic rotation were analysed with statistical analysis. APP determination with calibration and optimisation was most reproducible.The values of variance of APP were within 0.05° in model bone and 0.2° even in patient pelvis. Furthermore, the values of variance of APP with calibration/optimisation were significantly lower in comparison without calibration/optimisation. Both calibration and optimisation are actually required for determination of APP. This system could contribute to the evaluation of hip joint kinematics and computer-assisted surgery.  相似文献
