There is a growing body of evidence that suggests the effective functioning of marine reserves is dependent on the dispersal and recruitment of larvae. Enhanced production inside reserves is predicted to lead to a net larval export and increased settlement and recruitment outside reserve boundaries. However, larval retention in bays is also well documented. Since bays are increasingly being used as reserve areas, planktonic larvae of benthic marine invertebrates were sampled from two semi-enclosed marine reserves during flood and ebb tides to determine whether these bays are acting as net exporters of larvae. Neither reserve was a net importer or exporter of species richness, larval abundance or diversity, although one reserve showed a small export of species richness during the hours of darkness. Both reserves balanced the net import of some species with a net export of others, which was generally related to adult or larval abundance, although exceptions were found in one reserve. Significant effects of light were found, with the net import or export of some species occurring exclusively during either the hours of daylight or darkness. Eleven microsatellite markers were isolated and characterized for the ice goby, Leucopsarion petersii, from genomic libraries enriched for (ATG)(9) and (CA)(16) . Twenty individuals from a single population were used to screen polymorphism in these loci. The number of alleles per locus and observed heterozygosity ranged from four to 22 and from 0.35 to 1.00, respectively. All loci did not significantly deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and there was no evidence of linkage disequilibrium between all loci-pairs. These loci showed Mendelian inheritance in a full-sib family. The high level of polymorphism of these loci will be useful for studies of population genetics. 相似文献

The present study aimed to investigate the spatial structure of fish communities at juvenile and adult stages on coral reefs at Kudaka Island (Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan) and to relate spatial patterns in the structure of the fish communities to gradients in environmental variables. Diurnal visual censuses allowed us to record 2,602 juveniles belonging to 60 species and 1,543 adults belonging to 53 species from October to December 2005. The distribution of species highlighted that the juvenile community was organised into three distinct assemblages, rather than exhibiting gradual change in community structure along the cross-reef gradient. Correlations between spatial patterns of juvenile community and environmental variables revealed that the most significant factors explaining variation in community structure were coral rubble and coral slab. In contrast, the adult community was organised into one assemblage, and the most significant variation factors in community structure were depth, live coral in massive form, live coral in branched form, dead coral and sand. Overall, the present study showed that most juvenile and adult coral reef fish at Kudaka Island exhibited striking patterns in their distribution and depth and some biological factors (e.g., abundance of live coral, dead coral and coral rubble) might exert considerable influence on the distribution of fishes. 相似文献

The two-phase dispersal event in which dung beetles move seeds after endozoochory is often assumed to be advantageous for plant regeneration. Because seeds are expected to end up in favourable and safe germination sites, it is considered as an example of directed dispersal. However, literature so far is restricted to tropical rain forest ecosystems, while data for temperate regions are lacking. In this study, the effect of dung beetles on seedling establishment of endozoochorically dispersed seeds is evaluated for a temperate grassland ecosystem. We performed a field experiment in which cages excluded dung beetles from horse and cattle dung samples with mixed-in grass seeds. Seed germination from these samples was significantly higher than that from samples which were accessible to dung beetles. This indicates that the effect of dung beetles on short-term seedling establishment was negative, which contrasts with the patterns found for large-seeded species used in tropical studies. 1. The effectivity of elevated clay turbidity and low-oxygen concentration in the metalimnion as refuges for chaoborid larvae against fish predation was studied in experimental water columns.

When 70–80 nephelometric turbidity unit clay turbidity was combined with 3–4 mg L−1 oxygen concentration, prey capture rate by fish (golden orfe Leuciscus idus ) was reduced by 74% compared with the control treatment with no refuges. Oxygen and turbidity refuges alone did not significantly reduce the feeding rate.

Mitochondrial DNA haplotypes (control region, partial cytochrome b and ATPase6 genes) indicate a sister relationship between Vrljika and Neretva softmouth (Adriatic) trout Salmo obtusirostris . This relationship was supported by a tree of individuals based on microsatellite results [allele sharing distances ( D AS )], which revealed three distinctive clusters, corresponding to Jadro softmouth, Neretva brown trout Salmo trutta and Neretva softmouth trout. Within the latter taxon, Vrljika trout are clearly separated from other trout. The genetic results contradict the synonymy of Jadro with Vrljika softmouth trout, as recently proposed in the Red Book of Freshwater Fish in Croatia. Vrljika softmouth trout appear to have originated from a vicariance that split a common ancestor into large (Neretva) and small (Vrljika) fragmented populations 135 000–270 000 years ago. Vrljika softmouth trout can be distinguished by an array of derived phenotypic and molecular character states. For conservation, this population should be recognized formally at the same taxonomic level as the other geographically separated populations of softmouth trout. 相似文献

This study investigated the genetic population structure of the regionally endemic rainforest fish Cairnsichthys rhombosomoides by analysing sequence variation in the mitochondrial control region. The results indicated that individual populations, even those located in close proximity (5 km), were highly distinct. The pattern of genetic structure cannot be explained by physical barriers to gene flow and was not consistent with models based on separation of populations by distance or any hierarchical structuring within the riverine network.
