A model of extinction probability, based on the general theory of island biogeography [MacArthur and Wilson, 1967], is proposed for humans on oceanic islands; extinction probability is determined by island carrying capacity, frequency and amplitude of fluctuations in resources determining carrying capacity, and the net costs of contact and exchange between population units. The model predicts that extinction probability will determine island settlement patterns within an island group resulting in nonsettlement of islands with low carrying capacities and settlement of all islands with high carrying capacities. Data examined from the Marshall Islands tend to support the model. The model is extended to initial atoll colonization patterns. The time evolution of slowly evolving discrete dynamical systems x i + 1 = T(r i ,x i ), defined on an interval [0, L], where a parameter r ichanges slowly with respect to i is considered. For certain transformations T, once r i reaches a critical value the system faces a non-zero probability of extinction because some x j [0, L]. Recent ergodic theory results of Ruelle, Pianigiani, and Lasota and Yorke are used to derive a simple expression for the probability of survival of these systems. The extinction process is illustrated with two examples. One is the quadratic map, T(r, x) = rx(1 – x), and the second is a simple model for the growth of a cellular population. The survival statistics for chronic myelogenous leukemia patients are discussed in light of these extinction processes. Two other dynamical processes of biological importance, to which our results are applicable, are mentioned.  相似文献

The sampling of Ciliates performed in a little experimental torrent through two years, showed a great similarity of the two annual cycles. This similarity concerns both the species composition as well as the dynamics of the Ciliates populations. The basic species which affect the community structure are as follows: Ctedoctema acanthocrypta, Mesodinium acarus, Cyclidium glaucoma, Cinetochilum margaritaceum, Pleuronema coronatum, Lacrymaria pupula, Aspidisca costata and Holosticha vernalis. The dynamics of the ciliated Protozoa living in this environment seem to be influenced by the speed of the current, the temperature and the amount of dissolved organic matter in the water.

Over a six month period, littoral periphyton communities on vertically oriented glass slides were quantitatively sampled from four stations in Elk Lake, British Columbia. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were employed to assess the temporal interrelationships between 15 environmental variables, concurrently measured, and the periphyton populations, expressed as total cell counts and species diversity, for the complete data set of each station. At all stations there was a statistically significant increase in total cell populations with increasing length of slide exposure; positive correlations also occurred with pH, temperature, nitrite, nitrate and copper, while negative ones occurred with oxygen, orthophosphate and hardness (magnesium and total). At all but one station there was a significant decrease in species diversity with increasing slide exposure duration, a decrease attributed to the simultaneous increase in standing crop resulting in intensified competition for diminishing substrate area suitable for cell colonization. Multiple stepwise regression analyses demonstrated that greater than 80% of the variation in periphyton total cells at all four stations could be reliably predicted or described in terms of length of slide exposure, phosphate (ortho and total), and hardness (calcium and total). On the other hand, exposure duration and total cell populations were the most important variables associated with changes in species diversity at three of the four stations. In general, correlations and regressions between standing crop and environmental variables were more statistically reliable and consistent between stations than comparable analyses with species diversity. Use of multiple regression and correlation disclosed the importance of small, non statistically significant variation in ecologically relevant variables and permitted objective comparison of stations.  相似文献

在温度 (2 7± 1 )℃、湿度为 70 %± 5 %的实验室条件下 ,测定了菜豆属矮生菜豆 (无架 )、西宁豆、83 -B架豆、白花架豆、新春架豆等 5个菜豆品种 (系 )对美洲斑潜蝇种群参数的影响。结果表明 ,美洲斑潜蝇的各虫态发育历期 ,成虫寿命 ,卵、幼虫和蛹的存活率 ,蛹重 ,成虫产卵量和持续产卵期在 5个品种 (系 )间均存在显著性差异 (α=0 .0 5 )。其中美洲斑潜蝇在选择性弱的品种 83 -B架豆上表现为幼虫、蛹的历期最长 ,蛹的存活率最低 ;在选择性强的白花架豆上则表现为卵 -蛹的历期最短 ,幼虫存活率最高 ,蛹重最重  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism is usually interpreted in terms of reproductive adaptations, but the degree of sex divergence also may be affected by sex-based niche partitioning. In gape-limited animals like snakes, the degree of sexual dimorphism in body size (SSD) or relative head size can determine the size spectrum of ingestible prey for each sex. Our studies of one mainland and four insular Western Australian populations of carpet pythons ( Morelia spilota ) reveal remarkable geographical variation in SSD, associated with differences in prey resources available to the snakes. In all five populations, females grew larger than males and had larger heads relative to body length. However, the populations differed in mean body sizes and relative head sizes, as well as in the degree of sexual dimorphism in these traits. Adult males and females also diverged strongly in dietary composition: males consumed small prey (lizards, mice and small birds), while females took larger mammals such as possums and wallabies. Geographic differences in the availability of large mammalian prey were linked to differences in mean adult body sizes of females (the larger sex) and thus contributed to sex-based resource partitioning. For example, in one population adult male snakes ate mice and adult females ate wallabies; in another, birds and lizards were important prey types for both sexes. Genotype data from 14 microsatellite markers were used to assess the genetic diversity and differentiation of four guanaco populations from Argentine Patagonia. These animals were recently captured in the wild and maintained in semi-captivity for fibre production. Considerable genetic diversity in these populations was suggested by the finding of a total of 162 alleles, an average mean number of alleles per locus ranging from 6.50 to 8.19, and H(e) values ranging from 0.66 to 0.74. Assessment of population differentiation showed moderate but significant values of F(ST)=0.071 (P=0.000) and R(ST)=0.083 (P=0.000). An amova test showed that the genetic variation among populations was 5.6% while within populations it was 94.4%. A number of 6.6 migrants per generation may support these results. Unambiguous individual assignment to original populations was obtained for the Pilcaniyeu, Las Heras and La Esperanza populations. The erroneous assignment of 18.75% Rio Mayo individuals to the Las Heras population can be explained by the low genetic differentiation found between these two populations. Thirty-nine of 56 loci per population combinations were in Hardy--Weinberg disequilibrium because of guanaco heterozygote deficiency, which may be explained by population subdivision. The high level of genetic diversity of the guanacos analysed here indicates that the Patagonian guanaco constitutes an important genetic resource for conservation or economic utilization programmes.  相似文献

Modern climate change is producing poleward range shifts of numerous taxa, communities and ecosystems worldwide. The response of species to changing environments is likely to be determined largely by population responses at range margins. In contrast to the expanding edge, the low-latitude limit (rear edge) of species ranges remains understudied, and the critical importance of rear edge populations as long-term stores of species' genetic diversity and foci of speciation has been little acknowledged. We review recent findings from the fossil record, phylogeography and ecology to illustrate that rear edge populations are often disproportionately important for the survival and evolution of biota. Their ecological features, dynamics and conservation requirements differ from those of populations in other parts of the range, and some commonly recommended conservation practices might therefore be of little use or even counterproductive for rear edge populations.  相似文献

Marker-assisted gene pyramiding provides a promising way to develop new animal breeds or lines, in which genes responsible for certain favorable characters identified in different breeds or lines are incorporated. In consideration of features of animal populations, we proposed five schemes for pyramiding three genes, denoted Scheme A-E, and five schemes for pyramiding four genes, denoted Scheme F-J. These schemes are representative of the possible alternatives. We also provided an algorithm to compute the population sizes needed in each generation. We compared these schemes with respect to the total population size and the number of generations required under different situations. The results show that there is no scheme that is optimal in all cases. Among the schemes for pyramiding three genes from three lines (L1, L2 and L3), Scheme D (a three-way cross between the three lines are first performed, followed by a backcross to L1 and a subsequent intercross to obtain the desired genotype) has a significant advantage over the other schemes when the recombination rate between adjacent genes ranges from 0.1 to 0.4, while Scheme A (a two-way cross between L1 and L2 and a subsequent intercross are performed, followed by a cross with L3 and a subsequent intercross to obtain the desired genotype) is optimal when recombination rate is 0.5. Among schemes for pyramiding four genes from four lines (L1, L2, L3 and L4), Scheme I (seperately, a two-way cross between L1 and L2 (L3 and L4) followed by a backcross to L1 (L3) and a subsequent intercross are performed, then the offspring from the two sides are crossed and followed by a backcross to L1 and a subsequent intercross to obtain the desired genotype) is optimal when the recombination rate ranges from 0.1 to 0.4, while Scheme F (cross and subsequent intercross between the four lines are performed successively) is the optimal when the recombination rate is 0.5. We also disscuss how the animals' reproductive capacity, the probabilities of obtaining the desired genotypes and genetic distance between adjacent genes would affect the design of an optimal scheme.  相似文献
