Intergroup transfer by males is nearly universal among social primates. Furthermore, among the most frequently studied monkeys-savanna
baboons and Japanese and rhesus macaques—females typically remain in their natal groups, so troops are composed of related
matrilines. These facts strongly support two major theories: (l) that kin selection is a powerful force in patterning sociality
(if one is to live in a group, one should prefer a group of one’s relatives); and (2) that the ultimate explanation for intergroup
transfer is the avoidance of inbreeding depression (though both sexes would prefer to live with kin, one sex has to disperse
to avoid inbreeding and for a variety of reasons the losing sex is generally male). Substantial rates of transfer by females
in social species with routine male transfer would cast doubt on both ideas. In fact, evidence reviewed here indicates that
female transfer is not unusual and among folivorous primates (e.g., Alouatta,the Colobinae) it seems to be routine. In addition to casting doubt on the demographic significance of inbreeding avoidance
and favoring mutualistic and/or game theory interpretations of behavior over nepotistic ones, this finding supports the hypothesis
that predator detection is the primary selective pressure favoring sociality for many primates. Finally, while female bonding [sensuWrangham, R. W. (1980), Behaviour75:262–299] among primates appears to be less common than generally believed, the observed correlation between female transfer
and morphological adaptations to folivory provides empirical support for Wrangham’s model for the evolution of female-bonded

Summary Commercial plant tissue cultures of several ornamental plants exhibiting reduced vigor and chlorosis in stage II were found
to contain bacterial contaminants. In most cases, visible evidence of the contaminants in the tissue-culture medium was not
easily discernible. Physiological and pathological tests employing pure cultures proved 5 of the 10 isolates obtained to beErwinia carotovora, an important pathogen of many horticultural plants. The tissue cultures from whichE. carotovora was isolated were of plant types nonsusceptible under normal commercial production methods. These results indicate nonhost

The feasibility of labelling blueberry leaftier by rearing the larvae on blueberry plants treated with foliar sprays of rubidium chloride (RbCl) at concentrations of 1000, 5000, 10 000 and 20 000 ppm were assessed. RbCl sprays above 5000 ppm significantly reduced survivorship to adult stage. The adult longevity, fecundity and mating were not affected when the larvae were reared on foliage treated with 5000 ppm RbCl solution. Reciprocal matings of 5000 ppm treated moths with untreated moths revealed transfer of label above the 0.1 µg Rb/insect threshold level from treated males to untreated females (in 8 out of 13 pairs) and vice versa (in 1 out of 9 pairs). Considerable loss of Rb (56–64%) occurred from the leaves over a 15 day period. All of the moths and pupae collected from the RbCl treated plots in 1989 and 1990 respectively, had a Rb content higher than the threshold level. In a preliminary dispersal study, marked male and female moths were found in sweepnet samples collected 20 and 60 m from the centre of the treated field. Labelled male moths were also captured in pheromone traps arranged in a circle, 40 m from the treated plot. 相似文献

Summary
Leptosphaeria maculans, a fungal pathogen of Brassica spp., was successfully transformed with the vector pAN8-1, encoding phleomycin resistance. Protoplasts of a vigorous Phleor transformant were then retransformed using the partially homologous vector, pAN7-1 which encodes hygromycin B resistance. Retransformation of this strain to hygromycin resistance occurred at frequencies that were consistently twofold higher than with the original recipient strain. Linearised pAN7-1 DNA transformed phleomycin-resistant protoplasts at higher frequencies still. All the transformants that were tested retained a phleomycin-resistant phenotype (20/20). Molecular analysis of five transformants generated with circular pAN7-1 DNA indicated that in four cases the pAN7-1 vector had integrated into pAN8-1 sequences. These results suggest that transformation frequencies in L. maculans are limited by the ability of vector DNA to integrate into the genome. Hence, construction of strains with target sites for integration may prove to be a generally useful method for improving transformation frequencies of poorly characterised filamentous fungi, particularly when using heterologous vectors. This would greatly facilitate the identification of genes by transfer of gene libraries and the standardisation of chromosomal location effects in studies of expression of nested promoter deletions. 相似文献

Summary The fate of fruits from a population of European hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) in western Oregon, USA, was examined over a two-year period. Only one frugivore, the American robin (Turdus migratorius) foraged on the C. monogyna fruits, making this an unusually straightforward fruit-frugivore system. Dispersal efficiency was low, with an average 21% of seeds being dispersed (carried away from parent plants) each year; the most common fate of fruits was to simply fall. Robins dropped 20% of the fruits that they picked, and defecated/regurgitated 40% of the fruits (seeds) that they swallowed, beneath parent plants. One trait, gruit abundance, strongly affected the probability of bush visitation by robins, bushes with larger fruit displays being preferred. Both absolute dispersal success (number of seeds) and dispersal efficiency (proportion of seeds; success per propagule) were also found to be correlated most strongly with initial fruit abundance. Individual plant fecundity and fruit quality were found to vary little between years; as a result, dispersal efficiencies for individual plants were also annully consistent. Larger (older) plants produced more fruits and therefore had higher fitness. These results suggest that the optimal fruiting strategy for C. monogyna is therefore to get as big as possible as quickly as possible by delaying fruiting until later in life. 相似文献

A major wall protein of suspension-cultured cells of French bean has been isolated and characterised. It can be prepared from walls or the culture filtrate and in composition it is particularly rich in proline, valine and glutamic acid/glutamine and contains appreciable amounts of hydroxyproline. The N-terminus shows some glycosylation, while following chemical deglycosylation the first 38 residues were found to be identical to those of proline-rich proteins from soybean. However, the composition of the highly purified Mr-42000 bean protein differs considerably from the soybean proteins and must contain its own specific domains. An antibody was raised and used to demonstrate the inducibility of the Mr-42000 bean protein in response to elicitor action. The protein was found to be mainly localised in the intercellular spaces of the cortical cells of bean hypocotyls and at the wall-plasmalemma interface of xylem vessels, another potentially accessible compartment for pathogens. Following wounding, the protein was found to be generally distributed in the wall of epidermal and cortical cells of the hypocotyls. The Mr-42000 protein is cross reactive with antibodies raised to glycoproteins of the Rhizobium infection thread and the chitin-binding hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein, potato lectin. These common epitopes together with the previously demonstrated chitin-binding properties of the bean protein indicate a role in host-microbial interactions. Furthermore, the Mr-42000 protein itself bound to the growing hyphal tips of the bean pathogen, Colletotrichum lindemuthianum.Abbreviations FITC

A model of seed population dynamics proposed by S. A. Levin, A. Hastings, and D. Cohen is presented and analyzed. With the environment considered as a mosaic of patches, patch age is used along with time as an independent variable. Local dynamics depend not only on the local state, but also on the global environment via dispersal modelled by an integral over all patch ages. Basic technical properties of the time varying solutions are examined; necessary and sufficient conditions for nontrivial steady states are given; and general sufficient conditions for global asymptotic stability of these steady states are established. Abstract. 1. The efficiency of D.austrinus as a biological control agent depends on successful colonization of the cactus weed Opuntia aurantiaca .
2. Unlike other coccoid insects, the female crawlers (first-instar larvae) of cochineal insects develop long wax fiaments on the dorsal surface of the body that reduce their terminal velocity in air and enhance wind dispersal.
3. Dactylopiid males are dispersed as winged adults and male crawlers of D.austrinus have fewer and shorter filaments than the females and they are blown a shorter distance in a wind tunnel.
4. Vertical and horizontal wind dispersal of D.austrinus from O.aurantiaca in the field is usually very limited, but was greatly improved when crawlers were launched from an elevated 'tower'.
5. Preparatory to dispersal, female crawlers climb to the top of the host plant and 'take-off' from there. This behaviour is most marked in crawlers 2–3 days old at which stage the wax filaments are best developed: the behaviour is never manifest following artificial 'dispersal'.
6. Final settling on cladodes of the host plant is a function of the age of the female crawlers and of the condition of the cladodes.
7. When given a choice, approximately equal numbers of crawlers settled on cladodes that had received high and low fertilizer treatments. More crawlers settled on cladodes that had been kept in the shade than on those kept in the sun, and on basal rather than terminal cladodes.

The distribution of Drosophila subobscura adults within, and their movement through, open ground habitats has been investigated, along with the status of such individuals within populations as a whole. Movement occurs between open ground and woodland, to some extent as a result of passive transport by air currents, but flies can remain in open ground for at least several days at a time. There are no detectable differences in either the reproductive age-structure or the body-size distributions of flies collected from woodland and open ground habitats, although a significantly higher proportion of females are found in open ground than in woodland. The large number of gravid females in open ground provide the potential for breeding there, but circumstantial evidence suggests that this is unlikely to occur. Rather, their presence appears to reflect the foraging strategy adopted by females in response to their high nutritional requirements. The flux of flies through open ground between woodlands suggests that previous estimates of the genetically-important parameter, effective population size, have been seriously underestimated for natural D. subobscura populations. 相似文献
