Recent research suggests that planktonic organisms in resting stages can perceive predators chemically and delay hatching to evade predation. Using a co-occurring predator–prey pair (Gambusia holbrooki Girard and Daphnia curvirostris Eylmann) from a Mediterranean floodplain wetland, this study tested for such predator-avoidance behaviour of Daphnia. Results show that hatching patterns of Daphnia were not reduced by the presence of different biomass levels of Gambusia. This could be due to the fact that the density of Gambusia in the wetland is high from late spring to late autumn, suggesting that delayed hatchlings would face increased mortality through consumptive predation. 相似文献

Heterophils mediate acute protection against Salmonella in young poultry. We evaluated susceptibility of genetically distinct lines of broilers to systemic Salmonella enteritidis (SE) infections. SE was administered into the abdomen of day-old chickens (parental lines [A and B]; F1 reciprocal crosses [C and D]) to assess modulation of leukocytes and survivability of chickens. Line A was more resistant to SE than line B; likewise cross D was more resistant than cross C. Significantly more heterophils migrated to the abdominal cavity post-infection in the resistant lines. These data indicate that increased heterophil influx to the infection site contributes to increased resistance against systemic SE infections in neonatal chickens. 相似文献

Systemic yeast infections are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in immunocompromized patients. Candida albicans, being the most frequently isolated fungal pathogen in these patients, can be divided into three genotypes (genotypes A, B and C) by 25S intron analysis. In our study, we found that molecular sizes of genotype A C. albicans isolates were heterogeneous. In order to determine the molecular basis of this difference, HaeIII digestion was applied, and strains forming different band patterns were analyzed by automated sequence analysis. As a result of sequence analysis, eight different subtypes (a→h) were found among genotype A C. albicans strains and an easy differentiation scheme consisting of HaeIII and MspI digestions was constructed. 相似文献

The intracellular pathogens utilize numerous cellular components of host cells to advance the infection as well as to enter the host cell. Analyzing the host cellular response enables us to get a better understanding of the pathogenesis, and subsequently indicate possible therapeutic targets. We therefore analyzed gene-expression profile of NIH3T3 fibroblast cells infected by Trypanosoma, a representative intracellular pathogen similar to Leishmania, using custom-designed cDNA microarray consisting of 1,701 mKIAA cDNAs. Focusing on intracellular nest formation of Trypanosoma cruzi amastigotes, we profiled the host gene-expression at 8 days post-infection and found several degrees of change in 16 mKIAA genes. Among these genes, 10 were up-regulated and 6 were down-regulated. Assuming that these genes had important roles in the infection's progression, we performed semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis and con-firmed the gene expression change of 4 genes. Furthermore, 5 genes were mapped on cadherin signaling pathway using pathway analysis software. These results indicate significance of the host cellular pathway in the proliferative stage of Trypanosoma cruzi amastigotes. 相似文献

Many folivorous insects sever leaf veins, trench across leaf blades, or girdle petioles prior to feeding on leaves. The purpose of these behaviours is generally thought to be sabotage of the anti-herbivore chemical defences of host plants. For insects that construct leaf shelters, these behaviours may make leaves easier to roll or fold. Larvae of the Indian red admiral butterfly, Vanessa indica (Herbst), cut trenches at the base of host plant leaves and construct leaf-fold shelters. I attempted to determine which of the above functions the trenching behaviour of V. indica larvae serves. If the function of trenching is to facilitate leaf-folding, then larvae should cut trenches before folding leaves. When the larvae used larger leaves, they tended to trench them prior to folding them. This suggests that the function of trenching behaviour is to make leaves easier to fold. However, larvae sometimes cut trenches after folding the leaves, suggesting that this behaviour has additional functions. When the larvae were about to moult or pupate, they did not cut trenches, suggesting that trenching behaviour may also be involved in feeding. 相似文献

The facultative intracellular pathogen Salmonella enterica has evolved strategies to modify its fate inside host cells. One key virulence factor for the intracellular pathogenesis is the type III secretion system encoded by Salmonella Pathogenicity Island 2 (SPI2). We have previously described SPI2-encoded SseF and SseG as effector proteins that are translocated by intracellular Salmonella . Detailed analysis of the subcellular localization of SseF and SseG within the host cell indicated that these effector proteins are associated with endosomal membranes as well as with microtubules. Specific association with microtubules was observed after translocation by intracellular Salmonella as well as after expression by transfection vectors. In epithelial cells infected with Salmonella , both SseF and SseG are required for the aggregation of endosomal compartments along microtubules and to induce the formation of massive bundles of microtubules. These observations demonstrate that SPI2 effectors interfere with the microtubule cytoskeleton and suggest that microtubule-dependent host cell functions such as vesicle transport or organelle positioning are altered by intracellular Salmonella . 相似文献

Since ever infectious diseases have been a major hazard for the armed forces in operations. Nowadays our nations are facing the threat of terrorism, including bioterrorism. This threat is much more related to the potential disorganization of the society than to the lethal effects of the agents. Biological weapons are considered more like terror weapons than like mass destruction weapons, hence the importance of preparing specific defence measures. The know-how acquired from the struggle against natural infectious diseases is a useful help to face the biological weapon threats and risks. Likewise, the defence attitude is based on three pillars: anticipating, managing, and restoring.
